I'm a fan of the Donkey Kong games, so I was kind of excited when I saw they'd made this into a show. I'd had great experiences with my other favorite video game heroes, Earthworm Jim and Sonic the Hedgehog.
Sadly, I found myself disappointed with the show. It was made for younger audiences, which can always lower a rating with older fans. I accepted the overall plot of K. Rool being after the Crystal Coconut. It was kind of corny, but I could get past that.
Now, as much as I love music, I believe that having a song in pretty much every episode slowed things down. DK's voice actor had a lovely singing voice, yes, but the singing (in my opinion) got in the way of things. They usually had poor lyrics too. The dialogue wasn't the greatest either, but it wasn't horrid.
My major complaint is that I wasn't happy with how some of the characters were dealt with. I didn't mind the addition of Bluster, though I think they went overboard with his character flaws. I didn't mind the absence of certain characters. I simply would have liked to see them come in and do something or other. The only one I really wished would have made it was Wrinkly Kong. Actually, the only two characters I had a problem with were Candy and Dixie. I didn't mind Candy's design change. It might bother most fans of the game, but I took it as an improvement. Her personality lacked severely though. I doubt the Candy from the games was the smartest cookie in the cracker barrel, but at least she was helpful and kind. The Candy in this show is essentially useless, bossy and annoyingly shallow. She was a bit of a control freak too.
Dixie wasn't much better. I could accept the change in design, even if I didn't care for it. Again, it was personality that really got to me. She lost her pizazz. She was much more passive and bland. She had no spunk, and for some reason lost her animals on a continuous basis. (What did she do to those animals, anyway?) Dixie was one of my favorite characters from the game, so it was disheartening to see such an extreme change that wasn't for the better. I'm not sure why they limited themselves. Had they kept her original spunk, they could have had so many more opportunities for show ideas.
King K. Rool and the Kremlings also become fairly blah in the show. They were a bit on the dippy side. I know that was done because they wanted to aim the show at younger audiences, but I still don't care for the changes.
I didn't hate the show. I watched it. I was merely disappointed in it. People who are huge fans of the video games and would throw a fit if any injustice were done to it should steer clear of this show. It strays from the video game a little too much. (I know in some cases they need to stray a little to make it work.) Those unfamiliar with the games or are only "meh" fans might like it, or just not care one way or another.

This show is so bad, so poorly animated and so mind bogglingly stupid that it manages to be the best thing ever made. By all accounts, I really should give it a low score, but this show is so unintentionally funny that I can't bring myself to do it. The motion capture is so terrible that it's hilarious, the plots are , the voice acting is...actually fairly decent for the most part, and the facial expressions are a gift from god himself. Please watch this show, it's a good time whether you're sober or drunk (although it's probably best that you get drunk beforehand).
This beautiful show conveys emotions beautifully. It has the most beautiful animations at first I thought it was live action. I have never seen a show this good. The songs are beautifully sung, An absolute zero shows how donkey Kong is giving up even though he didn't do anything. I give this show a 10/10 for the characters, animations, emotion, songs, and story.
This Is a stupid, messy show that fails from the first episode to the last episode. Yet the sheer depth of it's failure comes out on the other side as an odd kind of success. We have donkey Kong, a hero, banana cream pie connoisseur, banana chomper, lover and idol of king Kong, collector of the planet of the apes treading cards, and future king of Kongo bongo island. He's incredibly stupid, and I mean the depth of his stupidity really truly is incredible. He thinks a pirate talking to him through a broken mirror is his reflection, making him think he is a pirate, and one time, he had his brain put into a robot, and it took a whole song for diddly to convince him to look at his hands and figure out he is metal. Donkey Kong has a teacher and possible (grand?)father, called cranky Kong, who is a bitter old git and is also one of the only smart people on the show.(I feel your pain, cranky.) In fact, cranky is a genius. Probably a better hero than donkey Kong. Donkey Kong has a girlfriend called candy, who looks different to her video game design and is also an aggressive, and sometimes manipulative bitch to donkey Kong, though she has a few tender moments and compliments him, sometimes she cancels dates on a whim over petty reasons that aren't even donkey Kong's fault.(donkey Kong, you can do better.) Diddy, an annoying though supportive right hand monkey of DK, is now stripped of his powers that he had in the games, and Is helpless like a little kid. Candy Kong works for a lovable ass hole, called bluster. Bluster runs his moms barrel factory, which candy plans to buy. Bluster tries to poach candy from donkey Kong. Dixie is a sweet, lovable little monkey who loves diddly Kong, and her pet lobster. Oppressing our heroes is king k.rool, an aptly named tyrant who is actually Honourable, dopey and a dirty coward deep down, but he can be vicious and deadly at times. He has general clump, the classic sycophantic soldier who takes k.rool's abuse into his stride. And krusha, a mentally challenged and child-like bodyguard with the hidden potential to be a heartless, diabolical genius. This show is goofy, dumb and proud of it. The stories are cliché but they acknowledge and make fun of these clichés. This isn't a serious or slick show, the animation is strange and surreal by today's standards, but so is the animation in the games. It simply reflects 1990s and early 2000s TV budget animation. I'm sure at the time it was amazing. The best merit are the songs. The devious bastard, Kaptain scurvy and his lackeys, the Italian-accented cutlass crock and the weird green crock sing awesome shanties about how awesome it is to be a pirate. Donkey Kong himself has an amazing voice. Metal head has diddly screech his lines, and it rips off daft punk's around the world, but donkey Kong's voice makes it worth listening to. I'm nobody's hero actually manages to be genuinely sad. Poor old donkey Kong. Most of the songs are epic, this show is very fun and charming, it isn't challenging, or epic, but its cute. The characters are interesting, the animation allows for some comical expressions, and of course, the intro, and all the music in fact, is kick ass. Hay-ho, look out down below. Here comes banana slammer!
An incredibly underrated show that pushed CGI to its absolute furthest reaches, years before James Cameron's Avatar. The characterization is what drives the story and not the other way around. An impeccable attention to details keeps the narrative grounded and consequential. It's these consequences and their impact on the characters that drive the show's drama and its primary throughline as an exploration of the American zeitgeist via Donkey Kong's relationship to the monkey with the boobies. Cranky Kong is good too. I like the bananas and the episode with the haircut. Good music too. Why my pee pee wiggle?

- TriviaThe audience never sees any of the characters swim in any body of water, but instead they only see certain characters jump into the water off screen with a splash effect.
- GoofsOften when Candy Kong raises her head, small dark spots are visible on the underside of her chin, which are actually the same textures as her nostrils that accidentally got copied onto the bottom of her mouth's 3D model.

Donkey Kong: BANANA SLAMMA!
- Alternate versionsThe series' Japanese version shortened each episode by a few minutes to make room for TV commercials and the longer Japanese opening credits. Usually one song per episode was removed or shortened, and sometimes further non-essential scenes were also cut. The entire series was also heavily edited to remove any quick flashes or strobe effects, following a controversial Pokémon (1997) episode that infamously caused epileptic seizures among viewers, leading to a nation-wide uproar. Another difference from the original version was that most episodes would end on a short preview of the following episode. The exception to this is the second-to-last episode, which lacks this preview because the series finale was not part of the original Japanese broadcast. However it was later released as part of the Ohashi quiz show.
