Great acting , Great songs , Perfect direction ..A master class of old Indian Cinema The two actors Sudhir Kumar and Shushil Kumar have performed as if they were born to play the role mind blowing music that brought out quite possibly Mohd. Rafi sa'ab's memorable classics like - "Chahoonga Mein Tujhe..." , "Jaane Waalon Zara..." etc Its a shame these 2 talents did not go beyond this mega block buster movie.
I first watched this movie when I was a teenager, and I have never forgotten the intense emotions that I felt. Dosti is my all-time favourite film; I have not seen another that has left me with a deeper impression. The story-line is quite unbelievable What is best about Dosti is the music --- just mesmerizing .

It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. The dialogues are classic and the music by Laxmikant Pyarelal with the voice of Mohammad Rafi make this movie a top classic hit. The strange fact about the movie was that, it was low-budget and no major actor was ready to act in the movie. It was expected to undergo a huge flop, but due to its brilliant acting and awesome story it went a major hit. It portrays and outlines the friendship between a blind boy and a cripple. There is a famous dialogue in the movie where the the characters say that they sing on the street not to beg but to make people happy and out of happiness the people give them gift. Indeed its a true classic and inspiring movie
I don't usually write review of the movies as there are millions who do and I am thankful to them. But this movie seemed like it didn't get its fare share of popularity/recognition when it should have. Yes, it was a hit movie of its time, yes people still listen to its songs now and then, but the movie, the actors, which no one knows about or talks about, deserve more than that. The lead actor Sudhir Kumar 'Mohan' beats many of actors even now. His smiley face makes my problems feel so small. He is smiling even when he is singing this heart wrenching song...'Jaane walon jara..' especially the line "Dekhta hoon tumhe..(I see you)" brought tears to my eyes. A blind man is seeing through you, when nobody else (with eyes) can or cares.. It was so gratifying that I had to watch it again and again. Ramu says to Mohan that you have such beautiful eyes and you are blind!! It is unbelievable. Yes, it was to me too. But the director 'Satyen Bose' has done such a great job with these 2 unknown actors that you immediately fall in love with them, with their friendship. You wish that you had friends like them... You wish that you could have such trust among your friends. Movie so simple, with such simple characters and very predictable storyline, which can do such a great job, is so hard to make now a days. Aah... such good old days... watch it with your family and enjoy the memory of your childhood days.
With the songs, EACH ONE OF THEM, more famous than than the most famous flavour of chocolate ice cream ( i was actually surprised to hear one or two songs (chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere) in the movie, i never knew they were in this context ) and with the leads' acting so profusely emitting a beatific note of innocence and simplicity; i finally discover why this, almost half a century old movie, is considered by the most intellectual and even the most imbecile persons related to the language; a saga and an unachievable and literally untouchable benchmark of the Indian cinema.
i am not an expert over the finances available and their utilization in the perfect way at that time, or even the BOMBAY of that time; but the detailed but simple sets and the overtly excited extras are a perfect personification of what those "golden times of cinema", and undoubtedly so, India, must have been.
the seemingly 'just another of those full of tragedies story with everything happy go lucky in the end' is rather a remarkable portrayal of one of the purest and strongest of human relations.
the simple and meaningful lyrics of the songs act like a majestically glowing beacon on top of a ship which arrives with perfectly refurbishing dialogues which are delivered with such proficiency that even the select few lines which might make (only an uninterested)viewer think of them as the 'boring emotional drama'; are wholly capable of taking responsibility for emptying tissue boxes in the house.
it doesn't really make you feel relaxed after a long day at work, it would not give you a lesson for your life, it can not lead you on a path for rediscovery, its not meant to go deep into your souls and shake some bones over there, and its never going to match your own inventory of dreams; BUT STILL, it somehow ends up making you smile, in a way which they refer to as 'straight to the heart'; with those tears still trying to trickle down your eye lids; and we all perfectly know where that emotion is placed on our list of special desired moments of life.so my recommendation, go on and make it a moment of your life. it surely will be one of the best two and a half hour memory of yours....

It will be a great injustice not to comment on songs. No wonder the film won all five best Filmfare awards of 1965. There couldn't be a better lyrics and better voice . I usually fwd the songs while watching a movie on DVD but this was an exception as the songs are worth listening. Md. Rafi at his best ...
