Stephen King is easily one of the most prolific authors, whose novels are constantly being optioned to become films, limited series, or TV series. Some of his stories have been adapted several times.
The horror author has penned many terrifying stories. With a series of upcoming projects, one of his best stories will receive a brand-new adaptation. Per Deadline, Netflix has made a new deal to adapt King's 1981 novel Cujo into a new feature film.
The only name attached to the project is Roy Lee. There is no cast, writers, or director, but Lee is a King veteran. The famous producer, who has a long list of horror films under his belt, has worked on several other King adaptations, most famously the 2017 adaptation of It and its 2019 sequel, It Chapter Two, as well as Max's new take on Salem's Lot in 2024. Horror author Stephen King somehow managed to tap into the feeling of being a teenage girl in his sensational book, Carrie. Released in 1974, the coming-of-age novel follows a 16-year-old girl named Carietta "Carrie" White who is bullied by her classmates for her unsightly appearance, overly religious views, awkward social graces, and her insufferably zealous mother.
The worst of it occurs when she experiences her first menstrual cycle in the gym showers. Carrie eventually manages to get revenge on her peers for their relentless bullying with her newfound telekinetic abilities, but only after getting doused in pig's blood at the prom due to a prank gone wrong.
Many versions of Carrie have been released since the 1970s, and each is part of the pop culture zeitgeist in its own special way. This includes two theatrical films, a TV movie, a musical, and of course, Stephen King's novel, which started it all.

Some very exciting news for horror fans this evening, as Mike Flanagan is re-teaming with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie.
Deadline reports that the pair - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.
Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed as one of the better King adaptations, with Sissy Spacek delivering a terrifying and tragic turn as the title character, who begins to manifest destructive telekinetic abilities after being relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her domineering religious fanatic mother. John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.
The movie's climactic bloodbath is often hailed as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

It's hard to be down in the dumps when the start of the work week brings the news that horror maestro and Stephen King aficionado Mike Flanagan has been tapped to adapt the King's monumental first novel, "Carrie," as a TV series. Flanagan has consistently knocked it out of the park with his adaptations of King's work, like turning the seemingly unadaptable "Gerald's Game" into one of the best King movies ever made and doing the impossible with "Doctor Sleep" by bridging King's novel with the imagery of Stanley Kubrick's take on "The Shining." As of publication, Flanagan is set to release "The Life of Chuck" in 2025 after a successful premiere out of the Toronto International Film Festival, and is working to crack the script for his take on "The Dark Tower." Flanagan is a magician when it comes to picking and choosing which aspects of King's books to...

It got a poorly received sequel in 1999, “The Rage: Carrie 2.” “Carrie” also got a TV movie adaptation in 2002 and another film adaptation in 2013. Mike Flanagan, the beloved filmmaker behind The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, is returning to the world of Stephen King. As part of Flanagan's overall deal with Amazon Studios, the director is developing an epic series based on The Dark Tower. Before then, Flanagan is tackling another classic King story with a new adaptation of Carrie.
As reported by Deadline, Flanagan has signed a deal to make an eight-episode Carrie series for Amazon Studios. King's book was previously adapted in 1976 by Brian De Palma, and it's widely considered one of the best horror films of all time. Then, in 2002, the book was adapted into a TV film written by future Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, which didn't earn very good reviews (to put it mildly). In 2013, Carrie was completely rebooted by Kimberly Peirce as a feature film starring Chlo Grace Moretz; that film was almost immediately forgotten. Ironically, the...

One of horror's most famous and influential stories is receiving its most significant adaptation in years, and we couldn't possibly think of anyone more suited for the task. Mike Flanagan has made a career out of taking prolific author Stephen King's written words and spinning them into live-action gold, from 2017's "Gerald's Game" all the way to his well-received prequel to "The Shining" with "Doctor Sleep" in 2019. Along the way, Flanagan has also built himself a veritable television empire, debuting multiple spine-tingling limited series for Netflix in the span of just a few years. This latest news brings together the best of both worlds, as Deadline reports that Flanagan is setting his sights on a series adaptation of "Carrie" -- the very first (and arguably most daunting) of all of King's works.

There’s nothing like the first time. Your first published novel. Your first Prom. First telekinetic murder spree. Whatever. In the case of the 1974 novel, Carrie, it was Stephen King’s first time having a book published. It would also be the first piece of his work to ever grace the silver screen. Carrie would be released in 1976 on its way to becoming an all-time horror classic. In the film, Sissy Spacek plays an extremely shy and sheltered High School girl who is bullied relentlessly at home and school. At home, her mother is a complete and total nutbar salad who has weaponized her religious beliefs against her daughter. She locks her in the closet with this little coked-out Jesus statue and has for all intents and purposes ruined her chance at a normal life. One day at school, Carrie gets her period for the first time while in the community showers.

"Did anyone of you ever stop to think that Carrie White has feelings?" Park Circus in the UK has revealed a brand new official trailer for their re-release of the horror classic Carrie from 1976. After a 4K restoration, Carrie will be hitting theaters again in the UK this October - though there's no US release planned just yet. This horror film is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, published two years before the film first hit theaters in the 70s. A girl unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom. Starring Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, John Travolta, William Katt, Nancy Allen, and Betty Buckley. In addition to this classic, there was already a Carrie remake in 2013 directed by Kimberly Pierce starring Chloë Grace Moretz. There's also a sequel no one talks about anymore called The Rage: Carrie 2...

This Spring saw the 50th anniversary of the book that made Stephen King an instant household name. In 1974, his first published novel, Carrie, became a bestseller. In 1976, Brian De Palma gave it a smash-hit adaptation. King's tale of a sensitive outsider with a deadly gift continues to resonate with new generations of fans, inspiring two remakes and even a sequel. None of these films quite manage to recapture the magic of the original, but there is clearly a reason why filmmakers can't stop trying to take Carrie White to Prom.
It is ironic that a story about the world's least popular teenager would become so popular itself, but King's compelling prose and De Palma's captivating style secured Carrie's fame. The Oscar-nominated performances of Sissy Spacek in the title role and Piper Laurie as her fanatical mother are unrepeatable, and Carrie's telekinetic take-down of her treacherous classmates can't be beat.

Lobstrosities is a Patreon-only segment of The Losers’ Club that journeys into the barren wastelands of Stephen King movies and sequels. In the past, they’ve covered Pet Sematary 2, Creepshow 3, A Return to ‘Salem’s Lot, every sequel to Sometimes They Come Back, and a third of the Corn franchise. Today, in light of its 25th anniversary, the gang is unlocking their 2020 installment on the 1999 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2.
Directed by Katt Shea, the direct sequel to Brian De Palma‘s Carrie follows Rachel Lang (Emily Bergl), the younger, also-telekinetic half-sister of Carrie White, who learns that her best friend’s suicide was prompted by a group of dickhead male classmates who exploited her sexually. The film brings back Amy Irving as Sue Snell and stuffs enough connective tissue between the cracks to make this whole thing work as a sequel.

If there’s ever been a classic horror film that doesn’t need a sequel, it’s Carrie. Stephen King’s debut novel was masterfully adapted into a 1976 film by Brian De Palma and quickly became a runaway hit. In fact it’s likely because of the film’s success that the prolific author so quickly became a household name. Published in 1974, the semi-epistolary novel follows Carrie White, a high school senior who’s spent her life taking abuse from her ultra-religious mother and savage classmates. Finally pushed too far, Carrie unleashes her telekinetic power with a fiery vengeance that lays waste to the cruel and kind alike. De Palma faithfully adapted King’s original novel to create a terrifying exploration of long-term abuse and self-defense gone terribly wrong. The image of Carrie (Sissy Spacek) covered in blood as she walks through a burning prom has become an indelible image...

Stephen King's books are frequently adapted into successful movies, but Hollywood often expands on the worlds King has created with original sequels that are bizarre or poorly written. One of the worst examples are the "Children of the Corn" movies, which mushroomed from an adaptation of King's single short story into a hackneyed 11-film saga. Likewise, films such as "Return to Salem's Lot" and "Pet Sematary" use Stephen King's name and established concepts to lure audiences in, but they pale in comparison to his prolific originals.
One of the exceptions to the rule is "The Rage: Carrie 2." Initially called "The Curse," Rafael Moreu's screenplay had nothing to do with Stephen King's masterful debut, but then shoehorned elements of Carrie White lore into the storyline (via Fangoria). The protagonist, Rachel Lang, is Carrie's secret half-sister and shares her telekinetic abilities. However, she is not as much of a social pariah as Carrie White,...

The horror genre is one that frequently insists upon sequels and franchises, even when they’re woefully misguided endeavors. There are too many sequels that are set up to fail and seem financially driven and creatively bankrupt, whether it’s Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, The Rage: Carrie 2, or American Psycho II: All American Girl. However, it’s always electric when one of these sequels does something special, different, and audiences are left with a Psycho II or The Exorcist III scenario on their hands. The Fly II is a horror sequel that was largely written off the moment that it was announced, sans David Cronenberg, even if its existence makes sense. The Fly II isn’t superior to its predecessor, but it does excel in many areas that are absent in the original. It brings something new to the table and marks a unique voice in body...

In January of 1999, two teen movies opened back to back and kicked off what would be one of the most extraordinary years for youth-oriented movies in the history of Hollywood. Both were No. 1 at the box office their first weekend. Both boasted remarkable casts of rising stars — they even shared a star in Paul Walker. And both whipped ancient genre conventions into new combinations that made them fresh and new. Yet for all their similarities, “Varsity Blues” and “She’s All That” couldn’t have been more different: one an R-rated sports drama that tempered its inspirational coming-of-age drama with surprisingly harsh depictions of misogyny and physical and mental abuse, the other a sweet, good-natured romantic comedy nearly as innocent as a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland vehicle from the 1940s. In their similarities and differences lies the key to why 1999 was such a great year for movies of their type — the 1939 of teen movies.

The original 1976 adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie by director Brian De Palma is often remembered fondly as one of the greatest adaptations of the horror author's vast catalog ever put on screen. Since then, however, directors have had difficulty leaving the story alone with a direct sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, and a television remake following in its wake. The most recent attempt to bring the White family back to the big screen came in 2013, with the release of Kimberly Peirce's take on the novel with a star-studded cast and an angle more focused on tragedy than horror. Now, over ten years after its release, Scream Factory is offering a chance to look back at the re-imagining with a new 4K Ultra HD Collector's Edition release coming on March 19.

Carrie cosplay recreates the titular character covered in blood at prom. Stephen King's debut novel was adapted into the 1976 horror film directed by Brian De Palma which stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy and socially awkward girl with secret telekinetic abilities who is constantly bullied by her classmates at school. After Carrie is invited to her high school prom by a popular boy as part of a cruel prank, she uses her telekinesis to exact bloody revenge against all those who have wronged her.
Some new cosplay shared by photographer Tom Roberts (_photrography_ on Instagram) perfectly recreates the bloodied Carrie at prom, and it's just as haunting as the 1976 adaptation of King's classic novel. Check out the cosplay below:

Some horror movies have become so successful they've been remade over and over again. Hollywood knows if something worked once, it will work again, encouraging studios to build films into franchises by reworking them again and again. Classic horror films and 70s/80s slashers have all been expanded into franchises throughout the years. Likewise, filmmakers will never stop revisiting Dracula or Frankenstein, whether it's a recreation of the original films or taking the famous characters and putting them in a new setting.
The same thing goes for more modern films that came out in the 90s or 2000s. If an audience takes a liking to a movie, it's rare that a movie will end with just one film. When it comes to horror films, there are plenty of ways for the movies to reinvent themselves or be sold to a new generation. With updated technology, filmmakers can improve outdated scenes,...

According to a biography on Stephen King's website, the famous author's first short story was published in 1967 in an anthology paper called Startling Mystery Stories. His story was called "The Glass Floor," and King was only 18 years old. It was the first step in a decades-long literary career of overwhelming success, leading to 65 novels, 200 short stories, and dozens of feature film adaptations.
King's first major hit novel came in 1974 with the publication of "Carrie," a story about a repressed, abused teenage girl who finds that she may be developing psychic powers. Given how cruelly the world treats Carrie White, and how little her religious zealot mother wants to talk to her, an explosive, murderous conclusion was inevitable.
"Carrie" was adapted to the big screen in 1976 (seen above) by director Brian De Palma and screenwriter Lawrence D. Cohen, and it's one of the best adaptations of King's material. The film...

High school is hell for people like Jenna Dewan’s put-upon character in the 2006 horror movie Tamara. The pathetic namesake doesn’t have any friends to call her own, and she spends most of her time daydreaming about her hunky teacher when she’s not playing with the dark arts. Now, Tamara thinks her life is finally starting to improve when her crush comes a-calling, but as things tend to go in these kinds of movies, the sudden attention isn’t real. No, someone is out to humiliate her. And like other wronged women in the horror genre, Tamara won’t rest until she gets her revenge.
Before Tamara Riley takes the stage as a violent vixen from beyond the grave, Dewan plays a smart yet frequently bullied girl at Hafton High School. The performance is convincing, quickly endearing her to viewers. Director Jeremy Haft’s movie then goes down...

It’s a difficult world out there, so once in a while it sure is nice to just sit down with the family to watch a wholesome movie about a wholesome man, his wholesome dog, and their tireless, never-ending hunt for human corpses.
“Rescued By Ruby” has all the feel-good warmth of a G-rated kids flick, with bright and colorful cinematography and a musical score which probably has compositions called “Let’s Hug It Out” or something similar. But it’s the tale of a state trooper named Dan, whose biggest dream is to join the police K-9 division, which involves, once again, more searching for human remains than we’re typically used to in a family flick.
That’s not to say that “Rescued By Ruby” is in any way dire or inappropriate, but whenever the screenplay by Karen Janszen (“Dolphin Tale”) acknowledges the harsher realities of K-9 police...

A limited series remake of Stephen King’s “Carrie” is in the early stages of development at FX, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The series, which would be the third adaptation of the classic horror novel, currently has no writer attached.
“Carrie” would join fellow upcoming Stephen King adaptations including HBO’s “The Outsider,” Epix’s “Jerusalem’s Lot” (which stars Adrian Brody) and CBS All Access’ “The Stand.” Hulu just wrapped the second season of “Castle Rock,” which is an amalgam of King stories. On the big screen, both “Doctor Sleep” (King’s sequel to “The Shining”) and “It: Chapter 2” were released within the past few months.

FX and MGM Television are reportedly partnering back up after the success of Fargo to develop a new limited series adaptation of the Stephen King novel Carrie. Previously adapted for the big screen multiple times, this project will mark the first time a new iteration of the story has been adapted as an ongoing TV series. Because the project is very early into development, details are scarce about who is involved and when the series might make it to air, and neither FX nor MGM TV have yet officially commented.
Plot details have also yet to be officially revealed for the series, though based on its source material, we have a basic idea of the story. In the original novel and film adaptations, Carrie follows telekinetic teenager Carrie White, whose struggles with bullying culminate in the young girl using her abilities to violently lash out against those who had wronged her.

The fact that high school can be hell sometimes is something that spans generations, and perhaps that is why Stephen King's Carrie seems to be one of his most enduring works. The tale of telekinetic Carrie White could come to life on screen once again, as a limited series adaptation of the 1974 novel is in the early stages of development.
Collider's Jeff Sneider reports that a new limited series version of King's Carrie is in the works at FX and MGM Television. While FX and MGM TV have yet to confirm the report, Collider reveals that "...telekinetic teen Carrie White will likely be played by either a trans performer or an actress of color rather than a cis white woman, as in past adaptations."
Carrie has previously been adapted as a film in 1976, 2002, and 2013, with a sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, released in 1999.
