This article is dedicated to Andrew Copp: filmmaker, film writer, artist and close friend who passed away on January 19, 2013. You are loved and missed, brother.

Looking at the Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film year 2012, the one miss that clearly cries out for more attention is Liam Neeson’s powerful performance in Joe Carnahan’s excellent survival film The Grey, easily one of the best roles of Neeson’s career.
In Neeson’s case, his lack of a nomination was a case of neglect similar to the Albert Brooks snub in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film year 2011 for Drive(Nicolas Winding Refn, USA).
Along with negligence, other factors commonly prevent outstanding lead acting performances from getting the kind of critical attention they deserve. Sometimes it’s that the performance is in a film not considered “Oscar material” or even worthy of any substantial critical attention.

A&E is getting back into business with writer-producer Charles Murray after their recent collaboration on the drama pilot "Under," developing a new project centering on a city commissioner.
"The Lost Son" is part of a two-script deal that Murray has inked with ABC Studios. The other script is a blind commitment.
"Son," from ABC Studios and Thom Beers' Original Prods., is an "Upstairs/Downstairs" look at the inner workings of a city commissioner's office and how his actions directly affect street crime in each police precinct. The project centers on a cop who suddenly jumps 15 levels to become the new commissioner of a large city but continues doing police work at night. He also continues to investigate his mother's murder.
Murray is writing and executive producing; Beer and Original's Philip Segal are nonwriting exec producers.
"Under" is not going forward at A&E, but the network was impressed with Murray,...
