This June, the King of the Monsters faces off against Earth's Mightiest Heroes in Godzilla vs. Avengers by Eisner Award-winning writer David F. Walker (Planet of the Apes) and artist George Jeanty (Star Wars: Mace Windu). This is the fifth in a series of six comic book one-shots pitting Earth's Mightiest Kaiju against Marvel's superheroes.

Taking place across various eras of both Marvel Comics and Godzilla storytelling, the highly anticipated Godzilla vs. one-shots kick off next week in Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1 by Ryan North and John Romita Jr.

That takes place in the Silver Age, with Godzilla then taking on the Jade Giant in a '70s-inspired slugfest with the strongest there is in the pages of Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 by Gerry Duggan and Giuseppe Camuncoli.

Written by David F. Walker (Planet of the Apes) with art by Georges Jeanty (Star Wars: Mace Windu), the crossover will be published on June 18 via Marvel.

Godzilla vs. Avengers #1 follows the one-shots Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four (out March 26), Godzilla vs. Hulk (out April 16), Godzilla vs. Spider-Man (out April 30), and Godzilla vs. X-Men (out May 14) for a confrontation with not only Jet Jaguar and the 2000s-era Avengers, but Marvel’s own mighty monster, Fin Fang Foom.

Computer generated imagery often gets a bad rap, but the truth is, many movie franchises have been dramatically improved by modern digital special effects. The Mad Max franchise presents a dizzyingly exciting vision for the post-apocalypse, but not every last minute detail of the franchise's movies makes a lot of sense. The Mad Max films have had an immeasurable impact on pop culture and science fiction, with a unique setting that provides the default imagery for the average post-apocalyptic story. However, the series is laden with head-scratching inconsistencies that can be maddening to try to resolve when all films are laid out next to one another.

The canon of the franchise is incredibly loose, with visionary creator George Miller preferring the stories of Max Rockatansky to be more like half-remembered folk tales told by survivors of the apocalypse rather than a concrete series that can be definitively placed on a Mad Max timeline. Even if this forgives the narrative plot holes within the series, it doesn't account for the more scientific and logical leaps Mad Max movies often make.

Snoop Dogg is set to add another feather to his cap by teaming up with Luc Besson for a sci-fi movie titled The Last Man, in which the rapper will star and serve as a co-producer.

Last month, Snoop teased that he was working on a film “in the vein” of Planet of the Apes — but with “dogs instead of apes.” This description matches up with today’s Variety report about The Last Man.

Besson will pen the screenplay, which is expected to take cues from his 1997 cult classic The Fifth Element by mixing sci-fi with comedy and action. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2025.

However, one notable character not in the sequel is Otho Fenlock, who was played by actor Glenn Shadix. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was one of the most ambitious entries in the series, but it also laid foundations for where the movies can go next. The original Planet of the Apes movie released in 1968 broke new ground for sci-fi as it introduced a primitive world run by apes, but the big reveal at the end of the first movie reframed the entire meaning behind the movies. As the series went on, it built on this incredible narrative, so rebooting the franchise in 2011 was always going to be a struggle.

In fact, when legendary movie director, Tim Burton tried to reboot the series just a decade earlier in 2001, the movie drew considerable comparison to the original and, despite a solid box office, the vision for a new franchise died before it could begin. But 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes created a reboot with a new direction.

Halloween is here, and Danny Elfman is celebrating one of his favorites holidays with a brand new song, “Monkeys on the Loose.”

With a manic groove, flurries of chanting voices, and an overall threatening vibe, “Monkeys on the Loose” follows a spooky tale of monkeys unleashing and “breaking everything they can get their little hands on.” Part Planet of the Apes and part macabre Tim Burton nightmare, Elfman even pays a bit of reverence towards the creatures: “They create the world then they oughta get their own damn song,” he barks in the chorus. While both Marvel and Lucasfilm are having various issues regarding their lineup of films in the sci-fi and action genre, Disney’s other big subsidiary, 20th Century Studios, is actually doing rather well in that regard. Just recently, Alien: Romulus brought in over $350 million against an $80 million budget, and Avatar: The Way of Water became the third highest-grossing movie of all time.

One of the studios’ other legacy franchises, Planet of the Apes, had a new film release this past summer. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brought in close to $397.4 million against a $160 million budget. While not a runaway success, the film still did fairly well.

The film was the first released under Disney’s ownership and the first in a new trilogy meant to be the fourth in a nine-film saga. The creative team stated that they had plans for a trilogy of trilogies, which began early on in the rebooted continuity.

The Planet of the Apes movies had already formed a decades-spanning franchise before the more recent blockbusters began rolling in. At the time, however, few would've guessed that the new iteration would spawn a multi-billion dollar era for the IP that succeeded at the box office while contributing some of the best work in the sci-fi genre. Exclusive: Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in negotiations to star opposite Maika Monroe in 20th Century’s new take on the 1992 thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Michelle Garza Cervera will direct the pic, with Micah Bloomberg penning the script.

The original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex-offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husband’s victims and the woman’s family. Monroe will step into the role made famous by De Mornay, while Winstead will play the role originated by Sciorra.

The original screenplay was written by Amanda Silver and the film was executive produced by Rick Jaffa; the duo later became the writing team of Jaffa/Silver.

Universal Pictures and Sega Corporation are teaming up on a feature film adaptation of the video game franchise “Shinobi,” the companies announced on Tuesday. Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s “Extraction” films, is attached to direct the “Shinobi” movie from a screenplay by Ken Kobayashi (“Sunny”).

The “Shinobi” series first debuted in 1987 as an arcade game and follows protagonist Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. The franchise spans 14 games, including spinoffs, and ports, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide. A new entry in the series was revealed in late 2023.

The film comes on the heels of Universal’s video game adaptation success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office, and hit “Five Nights at Freddy’s” which made $290 million on a budget of just $20 million. Universal is also developing an adaptation of the video game “Ruiner” with “Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball.

Updated, with Joker: Folie à Deux actuals: The opening of Warner Bros and Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie à Deux has come in lower at the global and international box office than was estimated on Sunday. Whereas Sunday’s offshore estimate was within the pre-weekend projected range at $81.1M from 76 markets, the actuals now put the overseas tally at $77M through Sunday. Combined with domestic, which, as Anthony has noted, dipped to $37.8M, that brings the worldwide start to $114.8M, versus the $121.1M reported on Sunday.

Among shifts at the international box office, some were seen across the Top 5 markets, which each skewed slightly lower than estimated. Actuals now point to the Top 5 through Sunday as UK ($7.6M), Germany ($5.7M), Italy ($5.4M), Mexico ($5.3M) and France ($4.8M). Joker 2 remains the No. 1 title in each for the session.

In the world of modern adult animation, one of the names you hear the most is Genndy Tartakovsky. Sci-fi is easily one of the most creative and innovative genres in film, but with sci-fi epics, everything is taken up to another level. Sci-fi is a broad genre that covers everything from synthetic superheroes, to aliens in distant space, and time travel. The vast expanse of the genre allows for a lot of creativity, but it doesn't mean that the stories need to be all that complex.

In fact, many sci-fi films are built around one simple concept or idea, and they explore that singular topic in depth. But, when discussing a sci-fi epic, it needs to be more broad, more expansive, and it ultimately needs to build a world. Kris Kristofferson, known for his accomplishments in country music along with his acting career, has died. He was 88 years old.

Per Variety, Kristofferson died at his home in Maui, Hawaii, on Saturday. No additional information has yet been revealed concerning the cause of his death, but it was reported that Kristofferson was surrounded by loving family at the time. A statement has also been released by his family to confirm Kristofferson's passing. The joint statement as written on behalf of his wife, Lisa, along with his eight children, as well as seven grandchildren.
