Meetings of fascists, young skinheads, Elvis, experiences with such legendary directors as David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino and Werner Herzog, and the media circus around Oscar nominees — those were just some of the topics addressed by British actor Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Rob Roy, Lie to Me) during a master class at the 15th edition of the Luxembourg City Film Festival on Wednesday.
The crowded session followed Tuesday night’s Luxembourg premiere of independent movie Poison, directed by Désirée Nosbusch (Bad Banks), in which Roth stars opposite Danish actress Trine Dyrholm as a couple that meets again years after tragedy drove them apart. Roth also received a festival honor Tuesday evening.
In his wide-ranging master class, he also discussed working with the likes of Charlton Heston, and, to the surprise of some in the audience, Tupac Shakur.

Computer generated imagery often gets a bad rap, but the truth is, many movie franchises have been dramatically improved by modern digital special effects. From the Star Wars movies to the films of the MCU, most modern blockbuster franchises rely quite heavily on CGI, with fantasy or sci-fi worlds drawing audiences the most easily of any cinematic promise. Sometimes previous films are improved significantly by the addition of modern special effects.
Granted, some movie franchises are aged by early CGI. But as the medium has improved and innovated over time, it's hard to deny that some of the best movie reboot franchises have flatly improved their source material with updated graphics. Whether it's gargantuan fantasy creatures, impressive science fiction machines, entire fictional landscapes or even simple animals, good CGI can make a world of difference in the arena of remakes, reboots, and prequels.

While 2025 already has some huge blockbusters lined up, many of the biggest ongoing franchises will be taking the year off and returning in 2026 or later. There are many exciting sequels set for 2025, like Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Avatar: Fire and Ash. Other big franchises are set to return with reboots, like James Gunn's Superman. Despite the arrival of these enticing cinematic events, fans of certain franchises face extended waits.
The Hollywood strikes of 2023 held up the development of big franchises across the board, and the movie industry is still feeling the effects. There are a lot of franchises which were expected to return in 2025 which have now been delayed by at least another year. Fast and Furious, Scream and many other franchises are now forcing their fans to wait a little while longer.

Thirty-one years after the arrival of their iconic album, Doggystyle, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre have teamed up once again. Today, Snoop’s new Dre-produced album, Missionary, has finally arrived.
Released via Death Row, Aftermath Entertainment, and Interscope, Missionary is a quintessentially Snoop affair, featuring refreshed G-Funk-esque beats, lyrical wordplay, reminiscences on Snoop’s upbringing, and exciting guest appearances by the likes of Sting, Eminem, 50 Cent, Method Man, Jelly Roll, the late Tom Petty, and many more.

The Mad Max franchise presents a dizzyingly exciting vision for the post-apocalypse, but not every last minute detail of the franchise's movies makes a lot of sense. The Mad Max films have had an immeasurable impact on pop culture and science fiction, with a unique setting that provides the default imagery for the average post-apocalyptic story. However, the series is laden with head-scratching inconsistencies that can be maddening to try to resolve when all films are laid out next to one another.
The canon of the franchise is incredibly loose, with visionary creator George Miller preferring the stories of Max Rockatansky to be more like half-remembered folk tales told by survivors of the apocalypse rather than a concrete series that can be definitively placed on a Mad Max timeline. Even if this forgives the narrative plot holes within the series, it doesn't account for the more scientific and logical leaps Mad Max movies often make.

Snoop Dogg is set to add another feather to his cap by teaming up with Luc Besson for a sci-fi movie titled The Last Man, in which the rapper will star and serve as a co-producer.
Last month, Snoop teased that he was working on a film “in the vein” of Planet of the Apes — but with “dogs instead of apes.” This description matches up with today’s Variety report about The Last Man.
Besson will pen the screenplay, which is expected to take cues from his 1997 cult classic The Fifth Element by mixing sci-fi with comedy and action. Filming is scheduled to begin in 2025.
The Last Man is co-produced by Virginie Besson-Silla and Luc Besson for EuropaCorp with Snoop Dogg and Sara Ramaker through their Death Row Pictures banner.

Director Michael Gracey is the first to admit that “Better Man” is a big swing.
After all, his leading man is a monkey — a CGI monkey, to be precise. But when it came to making a film about British pop singer Robbie Williams, Gracey had gotten immersed in recordings he’d made with Williams recounting stories about his life. And then it struck Gracey: “It’s interesting how many times he refers to himself as a performing monkey,” Gracey tells Gold Derby. “And so I just got to the place where I thought, ‘It would be kind of amazing if the story was told from his perspective — to show Rob as he sees himself, not as we see him.’ And that decision took many years of my life away from me.”

Here’s What Sunny Deol has told about the visuals of the upcoming Ramayana film (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana is one of the most anticipated approaching films based on Hindu mythology. Following the criticism faced by Om Raut’s Adipurush, people are doubtful about Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. Amid this, Sunny Deol has compared Ranbir Kapoor’s upcoming film to Hollywood mega films: Avatar and Planet of the Apes. Both Hollywood films are well-known for their epic visuals and stunning VFX, which appear almost realistic.
Sunny Deol believes that the writers and directions for the Ramayana film are apparent.
During a recent interview with Indian Express, the Gadar 2 actor affirmed that the filmmakers are plotting to create something on par with significant Hollywood projects. He specifically mentioned Hollywood films Avatar and Planet of the Apes as examples of what the creators of Ramayana intend to execute.

Ever since King Kong swatted biplanes from the top of the Empire State Building in 1933, hairy creatures have occupied a place of honor in the cinematic pantheon. And in many cases, the Academy has recognized that fact: The original “King Kong” was shamefully overlooked at the Oscars, but the second-ever special award for makeup was given out in 1968 to “Planet of the Apes” — and the first time the award existed as a regular competitive category, the winner was Rick Baker for “An American Werewolf in London,” with subsequent winners including “Quest for Fire” (hairy cavemen!), “Harry and the Hendersons” (Bigfoot!), “The Wolfman” (another werewolf!) and, um, “Frida” (unibrow!).
On the visual effects side, meanwhile, the “Kong” successor “Mighty Joe Young” won in 1949, Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” remake won in 2005 and the rebooted “Planet of the Apes” series won in… Oh, wait, it shockingly never won, though its astonishing motion-capture...

From the best scenes of the original Planet of the Apes to the subversions of the franchise's entry, the Planet of the Apes franchise is iconic for its bold storytelling and mind-bending plot twists. However, it's also unfortunately known for some moments that don't really make sense, particularly with timeline irregularities and unexplained storylines. The series has always mixed science fiction with big ideas, but along the way, continuity has often been sacrificed in favor of new directions.
As the story shifts between timelines and introduces new characters, it becomes harder to connect all the dots, especially for those tuning in for the first time. Despite this, the Planet of the Apes movies remain an evolving cultural touchstone. Each new Planet of the Apes installment offers something fresh while still challenging audiences to question the future of humanity in a world governed by intelligent apes, even if the path to...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice featured the return of many beloved characters from Tim Burton's original movie. However, one notable character not in the sequel is Otho Fenlock, who was played by actor Glenn Shadix. Otho made a remarkable impression as Delia's interior designer/paranormal expert in the first film and would have been a welcome addition to the story of Beetlejuice 2.
Though Otho doesn't appear in the sequel, the film seems to have filled the void left behind with the introduction of Justin Theroux's character, Rory. Nevertheless, one can't help but wonder what could've been had Shadix starred in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It is unlikely that Otho would want to associate himself with the Deetz after the events of the first film, but Shadix and his character left such a huge impression in Beetlejuice that can still be felt in the sequel decades later.

The best M. Night Shyamalan twist endings are the ones that bolster the larger point his movies are making. Consider his 1999 breakout success "The Sixth Sense," a film about how honest and open communication can allow us to make peace with our ghosts. Or take his 2004 offering "The Village," a tale about loss and grief and how they can spur people to reject social progress in ways that are suspect at best and outright harmful at worst. For as much as that movie's third act rug-pull was unjustly ragged on in its time, the actual message it was meant to drive home (one that was especially pointed for U.S. audiences arriving three years after the September 11th terrorist attacks) came through all the louder for those willing and able to hear it.

Tim Burton is one of the most respected and popular filmmakers of his generation, winning critics and general audiences over with his peculiar narrative and visual style, and some of his best works can be streamed on Max. The movies of Tim Burton have stood out for their combination of fantasy, horror, and gothic elements, with most of them having a family-friendly tone, though some are better left for more mature audiences. After writing and directing various short films in the 1970s and 1980s, Burton made his feature-length directorial debut in 1989 with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
After bringing an original story to life with Beetlejuice in 1988, Burton visited the world of superheroes with Batman and Batman Returns, with another original story, Edward Scissorhands, in between Batman movies. Burton has since worked on original stories like Frankenweenie, adaptations of other works like Sweeney Todd, remakes like Planet of the Apes, and animated movies like Corpse Bride,...

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films has just announced the nominations for the 52nd Annual Saturn Awards, which honor the best in sci-fi and fantasy on TV. All the usual suspects are here: Dune: Part Two walked away with the most nominations at 14, including for Best Science Fiction Film. Denis Villeneuve got a nomination for directing. Stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler and Rebecca Ferguson all received acting nods. The nominations must flow.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice nabbed 13 nominations. Like, Dune: Part Two, that movie was produced by Warner Bros. Discovery, which got more noms than any other studio. Will that make up for the hot flat flop that was Joker: Folie à Deux? Probably not, but it's nice.

Nowadays, it is not at all uncommon for iconic movie franchises to be revived. Studios know that one of the most effective ways to succeed at the box office is by creating new films that already have massive fan bases, as this can essentially guarantee that the film will attract a large audience. Unfortunately, many of these franchise revivals prove to be rather unsuccessful when it comes to their actual quality. A crucial danger of reviving old franchises is focusing too heavily on simply showing fans what they want to see, instead of actually providing a well-constructed story.
Thankfully, not every big-screen revival falls victim to this issue. Over the years, a handful of films have managed to find the proper balance between celebrating what audiences love about the original franchise, while also adding elements that help make the new addition a worthwhile inclusion. Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson's poorly-reviewed holiday movie, which made $180 million at the box office, has become a global Netflix hit seven years after its release. Andy Serkis looks back on his transition from playing Gollum in The Lord of the Rings movies to playing the titular character in Peter Jackson's King Kong. Serkis' revolutionary work with motion capture technology in his Gollum performance had a far-reaching impact. It led to Serkis playing King Kong, Caesar in the Planet of the Apes prequel trilogy, and Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, all of which were achieved via motion capture. Serkis has also expanded into directing, including being tapped as the director for the upcoming Hunt for Gollum movie.
While speaking with Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo San Francisco, Serkis explains how motion capture prevented him from being typecast. Even though Gollum and King Kong are vastly different characters, Serkis was able to smoothly transition between these roles because of motion capture technology. 1968's Planet of the Apes has one of the most iconic movie endings of all time, featuring a twist that completely changed how moviegoers understood the story up until that point. However, 33 years later, the Planet of the Apes franchise was rebooted by Tim Burton, who tried to create a surprising ending that was equally iconic. Compared to the 1968 classic, the ending of Burton's Planet of the Apes felt rushed and is generally demonstrative of this installment being a shoddy continuation of a sci-fi classic.
Immediately upon its release, 1968's Planet of the Apes was viewed as a revolutionary film that dealt with themes such as racism and religion. The first movie started a successful franchise, but in 2001, Burton set out to reboot the Planet of the Apes series and delve more into the science fiction elements of the franchise. Planet of the Apes fans make connections to the franchise in reaction to the news about more than 40 monkeys escaping a facility. On Wednesday, November 6, 43 monkeys that were used to develop vaccines escaped from a lab in Yemassee, South Carolina, and are still on the loose. Rise of the Planet of the Apes sees apes used for drug development break out of their facility. The film ends with a deadly global pandemic.
Since the news broke, movie fans are making connections on X between the incident and Planet of the Apes franchise. Some point out the news articles about police advising residents to secure their windows and doors is "literally the plot for Rise of the Planet of the Apes," questioning what kind of science was being done. Sci-fi movies make up one of Hollywood's biggest markets, and there are many exciting releases to look forward to in 2024. The best sci-fi movies allow viewers to explore vast and imaginative worlds, providing a sense of escapism. 2023 saw several successful sci-fi movies debut, from franchise installments like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the original film The Creator. 2024 has already had an upward trend for the genre, with far more releases slated.
2024 will or has already seen book adaptations, video game adaptations, original sci-fi films, and the return of major franchises like Alien, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and Mad Max. These movies are set to be directed by some of the best talent in the film industry, including Denis Villeneuve. However, many 2024 movies have been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Sci-fi films have always been a popular choice for moviegoers. Not only are they great examples of world-building, creativity, and artistry in storytelling, but they contain deeper meanings about society and culture. The best sci-fi films draw upon fundamental parts of society as inspiration for the worlds they create, prompting viewers to examine what makes us human.
Sci-fi films often focus on looking into the future, but several films from the past are still relevant today. In fact, many of sci-fi's modern franchises are influenced and inspired by these classics. For example, Franklin J. Schnaffer's Planet of the Apes and Ridley Scott's Alien have lived on through several modern sequels and adaptations. Films like these have made the recipe for delivering an entertaining yet powerful story that examines issues from beauty standards to human warfare.

The rapper is taking his creativity to new heights by venturing into filmmaking, drawing inspiration from one of his favorite film franchises, Planet of the Apes. Recently, the iconic rapper shared that he’s in the early stages of developing a movie inspired by the classic sci-fi series, but with his own unique twist.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was one of the most ambitious entries in the series, but it also laid foundations for where the movies can go next. The original Planet of the Apes movie released in 1968 broke new ground for sci-fi as it introduced a primitive world run by apes, but the big reveal at the end of the first movie reframed the entire meaning behind the movies. As the series went on, it built on this incredible narrative, so rebooting the franchise in 2011 was always going to be a struggle.
In fact, when legendary movie director, Tim Burton tried to reboot the series just a decade earlier in 2001, the movie drew considerable comparison to the original and, despite a solid box office, the vision for a new franchise died before it could begin. But 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes created a reboot with a new direction.

Venom: The Last Dance introduced the next major Marvel villain in the form of Knull, and I am praying Marvel does not repeat its Thanos recasting. By the time of Venom: The Last Dance's ending, it was clear that Knull was being positioned as a major villain going forward in the Sony Spider-Man Universe. The many symbiotes of Venom 3's story were left facing off against the Xenophages in the film's ending, creatures sent by Knull to retrieve something called The Codex that would free him from his prison.
Venom 3's Easter eggs to Marvel Comics were aplenty thanks to this storyline, from the prison being the symbiote home planet of Klyntar to the other symbiotes shown fleeing from Knull's impending carnage. Although the popular Marvel Comics villain of Knull did not succeed in his plan in Venom 3, the film ended with a tease that he would return.

While both Marvel and Lucasfilm are having various issues regarding their lineup of films in the sci-fi and action genre, Disney’s other big subsidiary, 20th Century Studios, is actually doing rather well in that regard. Just recently, Alien: Romulus brought in over $350 million against an $80 million budget, and Avatar: The Way of Water became the third highest-grossing movie of all time.
One of the studios’ other legacy franchises, Planet of the Apes, had a new film release this past summer. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes brought in close to $397.4 million against a $160 million budget. While not a runaway success, the film still did fairly well.
The film was the first released under Disney’s ownership and the first in a new trilogy meant to be the fourth in a nine-film saga. The creative team stated that they had plans for a trilogy of trilogies, which began early on in the rebooted continuity.

The Planet of the Apes movies had already formed a decades-spanning franchise before the more recent blockbusters began rolling in. At the time, however, few would've guessed that the new iteration would spawn a multi-billion dollar era for the IP that succeeded at the box office while contributing some of the best work in the sci-fi genre. Stretching back to 1968 with the first Planet of the Apes, the concept has endured over half a century. That film spawned four sequels throughout the 1970s, and in 2001, Tim Burton took a stab at the franchise with a Mark Wahlberg-led remake. Ten years later, the current era rolled in. Rupert Wyatt's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which made the game-changing decision we're here to discuss, was followed by Matt Reeve's two sequels, ultimately leading to Wes Ball's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes this year. For the modern Apes films,...

The latest Planet of the Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, may have jumped forward in time to a new generation of apes, but the franchise is still far away from the big twist audiences have been waiting for. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth installment in the reboot Planet of the Apes series, which began in 2011 with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This fourth movie stands out because, rather than following the franchise's original protagonist, Caesar, the movie fast forwards to a completely new generation.
The reboot Planet of the Apes franchise is unique from its predecessors. While the original 1970s Planet of the Apes movies centered on humans in the far future who find a planet run by apes, the reboot series focuses on the present day and how apes became powerful in a world run by humans. Great sci-fi movies need great villains, and there have been some villains in recent sci-fi movies who seem destined to go down in history. Many of the best modern sci-fi movies are elevated by their villains, and compelling performances are vital to this. If a sci-fi movie does things well, the villains can be just as compelling as the main characters, and they can become just as popular too.
Villains have to push the heroes in interesting ways, so many of the best recent villains are designed to counteract the qualities of other characters. This means that actors who play villains need to be in tune with the motivations of their own characters as well as the other characters in the movie. An intriguing dynamic between the hero and the villain can make both characters more memorable.

Universal Pictures and Sega Corporation are teaming up on a feature film adaptation of the video game franchise “Shinobi,” the companies announced on Tuesday. Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s “Extraction” films, is attached to direct the “Shinobi” movie from a screenplay by Ken Kobayashi (“Sunny”).
The “Shinobi” series first debuted in 1987 as an arcade game and follows protagonist Joe Musashi as a modern-day ninja who confronts great evil. The franchise spans 14 games, including spinoffs, and ports, with over 5 million copies sold worldwide. A new entry in the series was revealed in late 2023.
The film comes on the heels of Universal’s video game adaptation success with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion at the box office, and hit “Five Nights at Freddy’s” which made $290 million on a budget of just $20 million. Universal is also developing an adaptation of the video game “Ruiner” with “Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball.

In the world of modern adult animation, one of the names you hear the most is Genndy Tartakovsky. While initially starting out making cartoons for younger audiences, such as Dexter’s Laboratory on Cartoon Network, he began to explore more mature forms of storytelling with later series, such as Samurai Jack and Sym-Bionic Titan, until eventually doing more exclusively adult-oriented work, such as Primal and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
But one other series the director is known for is the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated mini series, which ran on Cartoon Network from 2003 – 2005. It was the first piece of animated media to show that era of the franchise before its successor series in 2008. This was all before Star Wars was acquired by Disney, of course.
However, he revealed that he pitched another animated series to another company, one that would also eventually fall under the Disney umbrella.

Comic books are not just fuel for some of the biggest movies and TV shows of all time. Aside from being a genuinely great medium that could enrich the lives of many people who haven't previously wandered down that endless rabbit hole, comics offer the chance to do things that can't be done on screen. They represent imagination that is only limited by what a given artist can do with a pen, and what a writer can dream up. That even extends to utterly bonkers crossovers that couldn't happen anywhere else, like "King Kong" meets "Planet of the Apes." It turns out, the world came very close to getting a DC and "Star Wars" crossover several years back. Why didn't it happen? That's where things get frustrating.

Sci-fi is easily one of the most creative and innovative genres in film, but with sci-fi epics, everything is taken up to another level. Sci-fi is a broad genre that covers everything from synthetic superheroes, to aliens in distant space, and time travel. The vast expanse of the genre allows for a lot of creativity, but it doesn't mean that the stories need to be all that complex.
In fact, many sci-fi films are built around one simple concept or idea, and they explore that singular topic in depth. But, when discussing a sci-fi epic, it needs to be more broad, more expansive, and it ultimately needs to build a world. If this requires multiple movies to tell the story, then great, but even a single film can be a sci-fi epic when done right.

The Planet of the Apes franchise is one of the best science fiction sagas of all time because of its ability to move forward with new ideas. Many franchises have been stuck making legacy sequels that do nothing but appease nostalgic fans, but each installment in the Planet of the Apes saga has introduced new story directions that complicate the inherent premise. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was a bold new chapter in the series that takes place generations after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) at the end of War for the Planet of the Apes. Although the film goes deeper into the apes mythology than any other sequel, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes draws its depiction of humans from Battle of the Planet of the Apes, which is often regarded as one of the worst installments in the series.

Charlton Heston became a household name with leading roles in action adventures and biblical epics, but his credits extended past those two well-worn genres. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After serving in the United States Army Air Force during WWII, Heston made his professional movie acting debut with the film noir “Dark City” (1950). His big breakthrough came just two years later with Cecil B. DeMille‘s big top soap opera “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952), in which he played the circus manager. Heston later reunited with DeMille to play the Old Testament prophet Moses in “The Ten Commandments” (1956), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination. A holy hit at the box office, the role undoubtedly inspired William Wyler to cast...

Michael Gracey’s Better Man was sparked by a conversation with Robbie Williams in which the singer reportedly told the Greatest Showman filmmaker that he often views himself as a dancing monkey. The film presents the British pop bad boy as an anthropomorphized CG primate, who looks as if he walked out of one of the new Planet of the Apes movies. Walking a dizzying line between the stupid and the profound, this exuberant, positively unique biopic is as hard to resist as it is to believe that it got made in the first place.
Beginning with his youth in Staffordshire in the center of England, Better Man traces Williams’s career trajectory from his early days in youth theater, to his time as one-fifth of the boy band Take That, to his eventual emergence as a solo artist. Along the way, he grapples with the burden of fame, music...
