The 1990s were an important time in the history of animation. The decade was marked by a lot of innovation and diversification in storytelling, art style and sound design. It was a peak moment thus far for children's television networks like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Disney Channel. And many now-obscure gems from that period stood the test of time.

The nostalgia of '90s cartoons is naturally more often linked to the most popular TV shows. From American classics like Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, The Wild Thornberrys and Animaniacs to anime like Sailor Moon, the hits overshadow the shows that were less popular in this crowded period. However, that doesn't mean the forgotten cartoons of the decade weren't as good as the ones that are easily remembered. The best 90s' cartoons everyone forgot about include Gargoyles, Magic Knight Rayearth and Doug, among other examples that go head-to-head with the greatest.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is the upcoming platform fighter sequel to the original Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. It features characters from various Nicktoons throughout various eras. The confirmed characters for Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 include 28 fighters from 17 different Nickelodeon shows. The game also introduces new characters and stages, with more content likely to be added through Dlc.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 is coming soon. The platform fighter features characters from a variety of Nicktoons throughout the years, from classic favorites to all-new stars. With a variety of unique abilities, items, and costumes, characters can duke it out in the ultimate cartoon crossover. Sutherland is known for his long tenure as the hard-edged Jack Bauer on 24, a series centered around counterterrorism. Rabbit Hole returns the actor to the world of deception. Sutherland stars as John Weir alongside Rob Yang, Meta Golding, Enid Graham, Jason Butler Harner, and Charles Dance. The story sees Weir framed for murder by extremely powerful people with wide-reaching influence, forcing him to exhaust all his resources as he works toward the truth.

Paramount+ shared the teaser trailer for Rabbit Hole on YouTube, giving audiences their first taste of what the forthcoming series has to offer.

In 1991, Nickelodeon premiered its first three original cartoons Rugrats, Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show.  The initial ingenuity of Nicktoons was that the shows were creator-driven in comparison to the majority of '80s cartoons that were produced by toy companies to sell their merchandise. Over thirty years later, the studio has released a plethora of classics (including the three mentioned above) such as Hey Arnold! (1996), The Angry Beavers (1997) and As Told By Ginger (2000).

The original “X-Files” are returning to television Sept. 10 as part of BBC America’s five day marathon in honor of the show’s 25th anniversary. The marathon will feature seasons one through nine as well as both feature films and will end on Sept. 14.

Nineties nostalgia is in full effect at streaming site Vrv. 

The subscription service has teamed with Nickelodeon to offer a slate of the network's 1990s classics. Through the NickSplat channel on Vrv, viewers will be able to access a rotating selection of 300 episodes from the likes of All That, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Clarissa Explains It All, Doug, Kenan & Kel, Legends of the Hidden Temple and Rocko's Modern Life.

The Toyman Toy Show in St. Louis has been going strong for over 26 years now and just keeps getting bigger and better! Nickelodeon has confirmed that it’s making a NickToons movie, because no one ever went broke betting on millennials' nostalgia for their own childhood. Paramount and Nickelodeon have tapped Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess to direct, with a script by Hess and his wife and writing partner Jerusha Hess. Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess will helm Nickelodeon’s cinematic nostalgia trip, Nicktoons, starring the Rugrats and more…

Not content with creating a channel dedicated to 1990s reruns and commissioning a new Hey Arnold! TV movie, Nickelodeon has gone one step further with the nostalgia – it's announced a cinematic feature film.

This movie – going by the title Nicktoons – will include characters from Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaahh! Real Monster, and The Angry Beavers. They’ll all interact together in one big story, as opposed to a series of sketches.

Jared Hess of Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre and Gentlemen Broncos has signed up to direct. He’ll work on the script, as well, with his wife and regular collaborator Jerusha Hess (she worked on all three of those films, too).

Based on an idea by Ali Mendes, the feature sees the signature characters of various Nickelodeon shows coming together to create in an original narrative - a kind of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" but with the likes of "The Rugrats," "Ren & Stimpy," "Rocko's Modern Life," "Aaahh! Real Monsters" and "The Angry Beavers".

Mary Parent ("The Revenant," "Pacific Rim") and Cale Boyter will produce what they hope will be a potential franchise.

For American audiences only, Nickelodeon is launching a new channel – Splat – purely focused on 1990s kids programming…

We reported recently that Nickelodeon was considering bringing back some old shows. New versions of Hey, Arnold! and Rugrats were being discussed, among others.

Now, it seems that Nickelodeon are trying to gauge what kind of audience there is for 1990s nostalgia before pushing ahead with producing any new content – they’re launching a channel specifically dedicated to re-runs of 1990s classic kids shows.

Going by the name Nickelodeon Splat, this new channel is launching on Monday the 5th of October, and will run from 10pm to 6am Est. At the moment, the channel is only going to launch in America.

Update: It looks like celebration over an all-'90s Nicktoons channel were a little premature (see our original story, below). It turns out that Nickelodeon is indeed launching The Splat, which focuses on its classic cartoons -- it's just not an entire new channel.

Instead, according to Variety -- and confirmed by The A.V. Club -- The Splat is a programming block, similar to the network's previous The '90s Are All That lineup over on TeenNick. Though there's still no official announcement from Nickelodeon, reps for the network did confirm the nature of The Splat's launch, which Variety says is set for sometime this October.

There's also still no word as to why "Doug" was missing from the first promo (perhaps because "Doug" was also once featured on ABC's One Saturday Morning lineup, and its rights are in limbo?). But that's a question for another day; for now,...

Probably because everybody who's anybody is either working on a reboot, remake, or revival these days, execs at Nickelodeon are thinking now's the perfect time to bring back some of your childhood crown jewels.
