O Bom Burguês

Incredible story

Based on true events, "O Bom Burguês" ("The Good Borgeouise") tells the story of Lucas, a bank teller who finances both sides of the socio-political-military conflict between the left armed revolutionaries and the right-wing government commanded by the military. His duality is amazingly impressive and it's hard to tell if he really believe in two different causes antagonist to each other; all we know is that he knows the schemes of robbing from his own employee and he gets wealthier at each investment he makes.

Things start to go sour when his wife (Betty Faria) discovers the source of new income in the house; and when an associate (Nelson Dantas) throws him to another investment where he'll deal with a powerful businessman (Jardel Filho, on his final film role). And worst when Lucas discovers that his younger sister (Christiane Torloni) works for the left--wing group, robbing banks and financing the guerilla.

The movie combines elements of drama and suspense with a great balance and rhythm, never losing momentum even when the story seems to be taking strange directions. But all the twists and turns make sense and add a great element of mysterty surrounding Lucas, the intrepid greedy man. Guess it all turns out that he wanted to score the deals and get the most money as possible for himself and his family, even though his wife does not care about all that thinking he's only putting himself in dangerous situations, going to risky extremes for almost nothing. What'll make audiences think harder is all about his reasonings behind being a supplier from groups who fight each other with all the weapons they have, shaking the structures of a nation.

I couldn't find anything about the real life story but I can assure this was a recurring situation and many businessman financed and supported the regime and even the guerillas giving high sums of money just to see their project of Brazil going right (or wrong too).

Wilker once again gives a masterful performance, very believable and Lucas enters his gallery of amazing performances of all time. The rest of the cast is very good too.

I was thrilled through the whole time just waiting for Lucas plans start to go wrong because those stories carry such weight, and when it did boy was I impressed. Lots of surprises on the way and you'll be thrilled too, I guarantee. 10/10.
