Oscar-Winning ‘Brave’ Director Mark Andrews to Showrun Postapocalyptic Samurai Dinosaur Series ‘Kyoryu’ (Exclusive)
Image
Mark Andrews, director of Pixar’s Academy Award winning animated feature “Brave” and a writer on Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal” and “Samurai Jack,” is attached as the showrunner of animated series “Kyōryū,” about samurai dinosaurs living in a postapocalyptic Japan.

In development at Wellington, New Zealand-based Floating Rock, an animation and VFX studio, “Kyōryū” is set in Japan in a future where dinosaurs have outlasted humanity. Genetically engineered, they are far more intelligent than their pre-historic ancestors. That said, atavistic instincts can flare, making for tribal wars.

Unveiled last September, the “Kyōryū” proof-of-concept trailer went viral, with 1 million views in its first 10 days of release, now 2.1 million views to date on YouTube, and an estimated reach of over a million.

The trailer also attracted Andrews. “‘Dinosaurs in postapocalyptic Japan?’ I want to see that show without even knowing what the story’s about! We’re going to give the audience...

Ves 2024 Winners Include ‘The Creator,’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,’ and ‘Nyad’
Image
Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was the big winner at the 22nd Visual Effects Society Awards (held February 21 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). The AI-themed, sci-fi actioner earned five awards, including the top photoreal feature VFX prize. The other awards were for modeling (Nomad), created environment (Floating Village), effects simulations, and compositing & lighting (Bar).

“The Creator” utilized an innovative streamlining process in post, in which Ilm designed and placed the naturalistic VFX over the actors playing AI simulants and the photographic plates as set extensions. This made the $80 million indie look like a $200 million blockbuster, with director Edwards shooting the entire film guerilla-style in 80 locations throughout Southeast Asia as the primary camera operator with a small crew and natural light.

Meanwhile, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” the animated feature Oscar favorite (snubbed by the Academy’s VFX branch), took home four awards, including the top animated VFX prize. Sony Pictures Imageworks innovated...

New Dutch Movies Tackle History From Alternative Angles
Image
From an immersive look at female immigrants in 17th century Amsterdam to a forensic analysis of a pre-World War II home movie, approaching history from different angles is a key theme among the Dutch films selected for Venice’s 78th edition.

Running in Venice Days, “Three Minutes — A Lengthening” is a poetic documentary that centers around three minutes of home footage shot by David Kurtz in 1938, featuring the Jewish inhabitants of a Polish town before it was invaded by the Nazis.

From this footage a feature-length film emerges through former journalist and historical researcher Bianca Stigter’s analysis of the home movies’ subjects in a film that’s also bound for Toronto.

Stigter, the Dutch producer and partner of Steve McQueen, makes her directorial debut with this English-language film, narrated by British actress Helena Bonham Carter and produced by Family Affair Films, with McQueen’s Lammas Park coproducing.

Elsewhere “Angels...

See Francisca Valenzuela Channel Broadway In New ‘Flotando’ Video
Sara Bareilles
Eat your heart out, Sara Bareilles: Francisca Valenzuela has released a Spanish-language ballad fit for Broadway, titled “Flotando.” It is the latest single from her upcoming fourth LP, and her first in five years, La Fortaleza.

In “Flotando,” which means “Floating,” Valenzuela sings ecstatically of finding, at long last, a higher love. Filmed inside a vacant theater, the video follows a besotted singer-songwriter as she drops in and out of reality. In one frame, she’s flanked by make-up artists; and in the next, she’s cuddling her dream lover atop a grand piano.
