News Networks Offer Dueling Chyrons & Plentiful Punditry In Coverage Of Kamala Harris’ Border Visit
Image
By the time that Kamala Harris took the stage to speak about her visit to the southern border tonight, the chyrons were at the ready.

Her speech was billed as a major effort to make inroads on rival Donald Trump’s signature issue and one that is perhaps her greatest weakness as a candidate.

All three cable news networks carried the speech. Fox News, in the midst of Jesse Watters Primetime, went for some editorializing as Harris outlined her plans. “Why Hasn’t She Done This Yet?” it read. CNN’s read, “Harris Speaks At Southern Border, Taking Trump Head On.” MSNBC’s read, “Harris Hits Trump For Killing Bipartisan Border Bill.”

“It actually was a wide ranging and substantive speech from the policy end,” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes said just as Harris finished the 25-minute address, before going to guests with analysis.

While the economy is the top issue for voters,...

Persona 6's release date is rumored for 2025, marking an eight-year gap from Persona 5. Based on new information from X user, MbKKssTBhz5, who is a highly credible insider when it comes to Sega titles, Atlus is planning to bring the long-awaited Persona 6 to Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. MbKKssTBhz5's comment came following the Direct Xbox podcast's discussion of...

Superman & Lois Season 3 Teases The Solution To Jonathan's Powers Dilemma
Image
Jonathan Kent has not developed powers on Superman & Lois, but the show's third season is presenting another path for his character arc. From the beginning, one of the main focuses of Superman & Lois has been Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) being a caring and devoted father to his teenage sons Jordan (Alex Garfin) and Jonathan. After revealing to Jordan and Jonathan that he is Superman, Clark's trials as a father multiply when Jordan develops Kryptonian powers that Clark must train him to harness.

Though Jonathan briefly inched towards developing powers himself in Superman & Lois season two after experimenting with X-Kryptonite, he has otherwise never had the chance to fly alongside his father and brother. While lacking the Kryptonian powers has at times been hard for Jonathan, Superman & Lois is not leaving him without opportunities to be a hero himself. In fact, Superman & Lois's season three episode "Head On" is...

Superman And Lois Season 3 Honors A DC Villain's Complex Backstory
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 3, episode 5 below!Superman & Lois is honoring the widely varying origin stories of one of the Man of Steel's long-standing villains on the show. Superman & Lois season 3 picks up with Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) facing a new collection of villains, including Bruno Mannheim (Chad L. Coleman), his villainous cabal known as Intergang, and the mysterious Onomatopeia. Meanwhile, the ending of season 3's episode "Head On" sets up the return of another villain from Superman's past.

Specifically, the final scene of "Head On" sees Bruno Mannheim in possession of the body of the deceased Bizarro Superman. The scene implies that Bizarro is likely to be resurrected through some kind of laboratory experimentation by Mannheim and Intergang in order to pit him against Superman again. With this and Bizarro's origin story in Superman & Lois season 2, the show is going to great lengths to incorporate every...

Superman & Lois Season 3 Ep 5 Makes A Minor DC Villain A Major Threat
Image
Warning: The following contains Spoilers for Superman and Lois season 3, episode 5, "Head On."The Superman and Lois episode "Head On" introduced a new villain called Deadline, whose unique power set presented an honest challenge to Superman. This continues a trend that has run throughout Superman and Lois season 3, with numerous obscure DC Comics supervillains rising to challenge the Man of Steel. All of these villains have been in the employ of Bruno Mannheim and his organization Intergang.

The action of Superman and Lois season 3, episode 5, "Head On," involved the gangster Bruno Mannheim on every level, though the man himself barely put in an appearance. Lois and Clark searched for evidence of Mannheim's corruption while Lois was undergoing chemotherapy at a hospital financed by Mannheim. Later in the episode, Intergang launched a bold raid on multiple Department of Defense sites. This led to the action-packed centerpiece of the episode, in which...

‘Superman & Lois’ Season 3, Episode 5: Recap And Ending, Explained: Will Bruno Create A Second Version Of Bizarro?
Image
Time and time again, “Superman & Lois” managed to tug at our heartstrings by evoking contrasting feelings – building up wholesome moments followed by emotionally devastating ones—and the fifth episode of this season, titled “Head On,” holds testament to that. In the previous episode, we saw Lois and Clark handling the situation of Candice’s abusive, jailbird-like father, Emmit Pergande, and Lois offers for Candice to stay in the Kent household until she finds a place of her own. Bruno Mannheim threatened John Henry Irons with the prime Earth’s version of his sister and her family’s lives, and Lois decides to get admitted into the Hob’s Bay medical facility, funded by Bruno, in order to simultaneously continue her cancer treatment and do investigative work about the kingpin’s illegal metahuman experiments. This episode ventures further into Bruno’s nefarious schemes as well as highlights the plight of the...

Superman And Lois Season 3 Episode 5 Teases a Major Villain's Return
Image
Warning: The following contains Spoilers for Superman and Lois season 3, episode 5, "Head On."The tease in the final scene of the Superman and Lois episode "Head On" suggests that one classic villain who previously appeared on the show will soon return. Superman and Lois season 3 had already introduced a number of new supervillains under the aegis of crime boss Bruno Mannheim. It appears that Mannheim's Intergang organization is about to up the ante by bringing one of Superman's most powerful adversaries back from the dead.

The activities of Intergang have featured prominently in the story of Superman and Lois season 3, with speculation rife that a villain war with Lex Luthor is inevitable. Even without Superman's greatest enemy in the mix, Intergang has proven itself to be a serious threat, somehow acquiring Superman's blood and using it to empower various villains. This was only the start, however, as Intergang's boldest gambit...

‘Superman & Lois’: Alex Garfin Gives Update on Jordan’s Super Future & ‘Journey’ to Help Lois

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 3, Episode 5, “Head On.” So if you don’t want to be spoiled, go see if you can find out what Bruno Mannheim is hiding in his medical lab.] Things remained as emotional as ever in Smallville this week and once again, the ensemble proved to be as adept at touching our hearts as they are at saving the day. With Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) beginning chemo at Bruno Mannheim’s wellness facility, Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) was given an all-too-poignant reminder that he is powerless over his wife’s condition, despite having all the superpowers in the world. At the same time, their kids were learning how to navigate the often unruly matters of the heart in their own ways. Jonathan (fantastic recast Michael Bishop) was forced to decide between a long-distance romance with Candice (Samantha Di Francesco) and a chance to join the Smallville Fire Department, while super-powered...

The Criterion Channel’s June Lineup Includes Terence Davies, Ulrike Ottinger, Round Midnight & More
Ulrike Ottinger
Sometimes it’s like they read your mind—or just notice upcoming releases as you do. Whatever the case, I’m thrilled that the release of Terence Davies’ Benediction played (I assume!) some part in a full retro on the Criterion Channel this June, sad as I know that package will make me and anybody else who comes within ten feet of it. It’s among a handful of career retrospectives: they’ve also set a 12-film Judy Garland series populated by Berkeley and Minnelli, ten from Ulrike Ottinger, and four by Billy Wilder. But maybe their most adventurous idea in some time is a huge microbudget collection ranging from Ulmer’s Detour to Joel Potrykus’ Buzzard, fellow success stories—Nolan, Linklater, Jarmusch, Jia Zhangke—spread about.

Criterion Editions continue with Bertrand Tavernier’s Round Midnight, Double Indemnity, and Seconds, while Chameleon Street, Karen Dalton: In My Own Time,...

Caring When the Universe Doesn’t: An Interview with John Scalzi
Alex Dimitriades in De plein fouet (1998)
This post is sponsored by Tor Books.

The publication of John Scalzi’s The Last Emperox doesn’t just conclude the Interdependency series (which began with 2017’s The Collapsing Empire and continued with 2018’s The Consuming Fire), it also marks the completion of the first trilogy of the landmark deal that Scalzi signed with Tor Books in 2015: 13 books over a decade, for $3.4 million.

The space opera series, set 1,500 years in the future and far from Earth, takes place within an Interdependency of planetary systems linked by the extradimensional, river-like Flow. But when the Flow threatens to disappear and isolate these systems from one another, it’s up to Emperox Grayland II (a.k.a. Cardenia Wu-Patrick), scientist Marce Claremont, and guild merchant Kiva Lagos to convince the Interdependency to get past their denial to acknowledge the threat and figure out how to reform their entire culture… all while fending...

David Hasselhoff Taps the Cars’ Elliot Easton for Glitzy Cover of Jesus and Mary Chain’s ‘Head On’
David Hasselhoff
David Hasselhoff dropped a sprightly rendition of Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Head On” featuring the Cars’ Elliot Easton on guitar. The shoegaze cover will appear on Hasselhoff’s upcoming LP Open Your Eyes, out September 27th via Cleopatra Records.

The Baywatch icon stays true to the original “Head On,” which Jesus and Mary Chain released as a single in 1989, complete with synths, drum machine and layers upon layers of guitar feedback. “Makes you want to feel makes you want to try,” Hasselhoff sings, his voice swelling over a searing riff.

David Hasselhoff
David Hasselhoff has unveiled a cheekily dramatic rendition of the Lord of the New Church’s 1982 song, “Open Your Eyes.” The track will appear on the singer’s album titled after the tune, set for release on September 27th via Cleopatra.

Hasselhoff stays faithful to the original’s foreboding melodies and lyrics that warn of political corruption and manipulation and the impending fallout, which still resonate today. He urgently gesticulates throughout the clip, which highlights the gravity of the song’s themes, but also does so with a knowing wink.

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Sibel Kekilli Talks Shae, Being German and Turkish
Sibel Kekilli
German actress Sibel Kekilli is best-known to American audiences for her role as Shae, the prostitute-turned-mistress of Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” An outspoken feminist of Turkish descent, Kekiilli spoke to Variety at Italy’s Lucca Comics about the culture clash she’s been contending with since the start of her career, and why she likes to play women who, like Shae, are survivors.

You are publicizing “Game of Thrones” at this Tuscan meet dedicated to fandom and cosplay, which clearly indicates how much fans love Shae, who died in Season 4. What do you think makes this conflicted woman, who betrays her lover and is killed by him, such a powerful character?

She’s a complex character and a strong one. After my first audition, the writers changed Shae from how she is in the book, where she was more of a gold digger. But of course,...

VP of production Sara Scott will oversee production for Universal.

This will mark the third time Goldsman and Blum have worked together following the “Paranormal Activity” franchise and “Stephanie.”

‘In the Fade’ Director Fatih Akin Shares the Love in Palm Springs After His Globe Win
Fatih Akin
Fatih Akin, the 44-year-old German director of “In the Fade” (December 29, Magnolia Pictures) seemed both bemused and philosophical the night after his film’s surprise Best Foreign Language win at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards. “The story is like a German team won a big sports victory in the local newspapers,” he noted from the Palm Springs International Film Festival, 5,000 miles away from Berlin.

“In the Fade” is the fictionalized story of a German woman (Cannes Best Actress winner Diane Kruger) who demands justice after her immigrant husband and their son are victims of a terror attack. They turn out to have been targets of white nationalists who are arrested and put on trial. Based on real-life events but fictionalized (the actual case that served as a starting point is still not resolved in local courts), it is a compelling thriller as well as a drama about justice and racism.

Celebrated Turkish-German filmmaker Fatih Akin (Head On, Soul Kitchen and my favorite, The Edge of Heaven) returned to Cannes this year with In the Fade / Aus dem nichts, a gritty thriller set in contemporary Hamburg, which earned Diane Kruger the Best Actress Award for her riveting performance as a grief-stricken woman who takes revenge for the death of her son and husband in a Neo-Nazi terrorist bombing. Spawn Reboot Not Paying Anyone to Keep Budget Low
Michael Jai White in Spawn (1997)
Todd McFarlane locked down a deal with Blumhouse Productions over the summer during San Diego Comic-Con to finally make his long-gestating Spawn Reboot. It's going to be R-rated, he's going to write, direct and produce and, most notably, it is going to be a low-budget Spawn movie, with the $10 million figure having been thrown around previously. So how are they going to make a Spawn movie on such a low-budget? According to Jason Blum, the answer is simple. Nobody is going to get paid.

Jason Blum, the man who started Blumhouse Productions, recently spoke with Coming Soon about the upcoming Spawn reboot. He was asked about how they are going to keep the budget so low and, outside of a "relatively contained" script, it's a lack of people getting paid upfront. Jason Blum and Todd McFarlane aren't getting paid and, perhaps most surprising, the actors won't be either. Here's what...

Like mother, like son!

Kate Hudson revealed to Et's Carly Steel on Saturday that the inspiration behind her buzzed look isn't just for a role in a new project with Sia.

"I copied Ryder," she said, referring to her 13-year-old son who has a similar shaved look. "Ryder had it way before, Ryder's been buzzing his head for a long time."

But he wasn't a fan at first.

"Ryder's like, 'Mom, you're cramping my style,'" she laughed. "But when I did it, he was like, 'Oh my God, we actually ...' It was the first time he even could see that we looked, you know, that he looked like his mommy."

And they're still sharing hair inspiration. "Now it's starting to grow out, and Ryder's growing his out," she said.

New Details On Ben Affleck’s Batman Script Surface
Back when Matt Reeves entered early negotiations to helm The Batman for Warner Bros., it emerged that the War For the Planet of the Apes director wanted to exercise full creative control over the Caped Crusader’s next solo outing.

It’s a similar approach Reeves took upon climbing aboard Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, when the writer-director shied away from Fox’s original vision of an apocalyptic blockbuster in favor of a much more nuanced, Western-esque feature about two tribes – two species – attempting to co-exist on the same plot of land.

With The Batman, it’s a little different; despite his initial desire to write, direct, produce, and indeed headline the DC standalone pic as Gotham’s watchful protector, Ben Affleck handed over the reins to Matt Reeves, who reportedly climbed aboard on the condition that he could direct from a totally new script. We’re not...

As expected, Germany is submitting its Cannes Best Actress winner “In the Fade” as its official Oscar entry. Kruger plays Katja, whose life falls apart after her husband and son are killed in a bomb attack. While the police arrest a young neo-Nazi couple, Katja seeks her own form of justice.

"Twin Peaks," Episode 9 Recap: Whatever This Is
Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. There's a brief, very beautiful moment in Part 7 of the new Twin Peaks, during the scene in which hotelier Benjamin Horne (Richard Beymer) and his secretary Beverly Paige (Ashley Judd) are investigating a strange sound emanating from the walls of the Great Northern. Ben points in the direction that he thinks the soft, soothing tone is coming from, and for a second he seems to be pointing right at the camera—past it, really…toward our world, at those of us on the other side of the fiction/fact divide. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it breach, but it lays some subtle groundwork for what follows: The aesthetically and thematically provocative Part 8 fitted the Twin Peaks mythos into our very real history of atomic destruction. And this week's...

Blu-ray Review: Serial Mom Collector’s Edition
Is Serial Mom John Waters’ best movie?

On the bonus features of the new Scream Factory Blu-ray, the legendary writer/director says that it is. And who am I to disagree? While I think Hairspray is still his most commercially accessible film—there’s a reason it was turned into a hit broadway musical, then adapted for both the big and small screen—Serial Mom is, like Brian De Palma’s adaptation of The Untouchables, a brilliant marriage of a commercial aesthetic and the filmmaker’s true voice. It’s a movie that can appeal to everyone while still being very much a John Waters movie, and for that alone it must be considered a huge success.

Kathleen Turner plays Beverly Sutphin, an idealized 1950s-style housewife with the perfect American family: her husband (Sam Waterston) is a successful dentist and her two teenage kids (Matthew Lillard and Ricki Lake) are happy and well-adjusted.

PSA: Alan Wake 90 Percent Off Before Being Removed
Alan Wake, the hit 360 title, is just a few bucks for the entire collection right now, but get it before the game is entirely removed from stores.

Head on over to Steam for PC. amd the game should be on sale for Xbox One as well. The sale lasts until the end of Sunday (48 hours) before the game gets entirely removed from all stores due to licensing issues with some music used in the game.

Remedy confirmed the removal earlier this week. They developed the game along with other titles such as Quantum Break and Max Payne. The removal is due to some licenses running out for tracks found in the game, and Remedy doesn't feel simply removing them will do the game justice. That means the game will be entirely removed from stores by Monday.

Remedy did note that the Dlc may not be on sale in some instaces,...

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue Rookie Myla Dalbesio Pens Essay on Feminism and Body Confidence
Dalbesio’s essay originally appeared on Si.com.

It was Marisa Miller in the jeweled bikini. Well, less of a bikini and more of a big necklace (was it even that big?) strategically placed to cover her nipples. The magazine had arrived at our apartment unceremoniously. My boyfriend, taking advantage of a seemingly last ditch effort by the publishing industry to save the future of print, had purchased a bundle deal on magazine subscriptions. Thusly, we had copies of various weekly publications jammed into our mailbox until the post man had to ring our bell for us to come down and get them.

Anthony Anderson at an event for Shrek 4 : Il était une fin (2010)
Anthony Anderson’s children are exposing his "diva" antics.

The Black-ish star brought his children, Nathan and Kyra, to Sunday's Golden Globes, and they couldn't resist making fun of their dad.

"He's been extra loud today, which I think is a sign of him being nervous," Nathan, 16, told Et’s Kevin Frazier on the red carpet.

Kyra, 20, agreed with her younger brother, concluding that Anderson was being “a little bit” of a diva for the night.

Of course, Anderson got the last laugh by hilariously dissing his son.

"I took my son to get his first pedicure today," he shared. "How am I being a diva?"

The evening was definitely a family affair, with Anderson bringing his mother, Doris Hancox, to the ceremony as well.

‘Boys Don’t Cry’ Protests: Why We Should Listen to Trans Activists Criticizing The Milestone Film — Editorial
Joey Soloway
In 1999,”Boys Don’t Cry” became the first film to represent transgender masculinity in a believable way. However, at a recent Reed College screening that point was lost on a group of transgender students who showed up to protest it. Visiting filmmaker Kimberly Peirce was greeted with signs declaring “Fuck Your Transphobia,” “You Don’t Fucking Get It,” and “Fuck This Cis White Bitch.” Their beef wasn’t new: The movie portrays the plight of a transgender man, but it doesn’t feature a transgender performer.

While this may be a misguided attack on a respected queer filmmaker and vital piece of independent film history, it would be irresponsible to dismiss the complaints outright.

Over the 15 years since the film’s release, Peirce has faced criticism for casting cisgender actress Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena, a transgender male. She’s also been criticized for directing the film as a cisgender lesbian,...

The Voice (2011)
As the first night of The Voice's two-part season 11 finale ended on Monday, the final four contestants were feeling pretty good about their performances and looking forward to the show's grand finale.

Et's Sophie Schillaci caught up with Josh Gallagher, Billy Gilman, We McDonald and Sundance Head for a Facebook Live interview after their big night, and the singers each opened up about their nerves going into Monday's show, and how they're feeling heading into the season's final night.

"To be honest with you, [there were] no nerves," Gallagher said of his performances on Monday, where he sang John Mellencamp's 1982 classic "Jack & Diane," a duet of Santana's "Smooth" with his coach, Adam Levine, and an original song, "Pick Any Small Town."

"I look at it this way. Tonight was another competition night, but it wasn't a competition because there's nothing after this. There's no more rounds, there's nothing you have to make it through," the Voice hopeful...

We’re still several months away from Ultra Music Festival‘s upcoming outing, but they’ve just released the phase one lineup for 2017, and it’s massive. We saw the official aftermovie for Ultra 2016 drop at the beginning of last month, and we couldn’t be more excited to now have our first glimpse at next year’s lineup.

Starting off with the headliners, Ultra is offering up a diverse blend of performers. Acts like Major Lazer and Justice serve as the biggest draw, while The Prodigy and Underworld will appeal to more seasoned ravers.
