When it comes to anime adaptations of manga, some changes to the characters' personalities and backgrounds are both necessary and understandable. Sometimes an old story just needs a bit of updating, while some mangaka use the animated adaptation of their work to rewrite a character. But in the case of these anime characters, they might as well be entirely new people since they bear so little resemblance to their manga selves.
These anime characters may look, act and sound like how they were in their source manga, but a lot changed during the translation from print to animation. As bad and controversial as this may sound, these changes were actually pretty compelling. Whether they were heroes or villains or somewhere in between, these manga characters benefited a lot from the animation crew's creative divergences from the original work.

When Hasbro first introduced America to Transformers, it felt monumental and completely new. A simultaneous release of cartoons and toyline each featuring robots that changed into vehicles was unprecedented for Western audiences. Yet here it was, intricate lore, immersive world and all. Little did the children consuming Transformers' animated series and play with their toys know they were indulging in well-established concepts.
As early as a decade before Optimus Prime bellowed his "Autobots, roll out!", Japanese animation studios had already had several successful iterations of nearly every concept that made Transformers what it was. From warring factions to intricate robotic engineering, an abundance of anime bore the torch for Transformers. The Hasbro franchise undoubtedly took said torch and ran with it, achieving unparalleled success, but its predecessors, from Voltron to Brave Raideen, are more than deserving of a deep dive.

The classic '80s animated series Voltron is coming to the big screen in an all-new live-action Hollywood adaptation, and here's everything to know about the upcoming movie. The American cartoon series debuted in 1984 and used footage from the Japanese anime series Beast King Go-Lion (dubbed into English). The basic premise concerns a group of space explorers who pilot a gigantic robot known as Voltron, as they take on various threats throughout the galaxy. Taking advantage of the giant robot craze of the '80s, Voltron quickly became a multimedia franchise across the globe.
Muscling into the territory of franchises like Transformers, the original Voltron series ran for 124 episodes, but things didn't stop there. Voltron would return in several spinoff shows in the '90s and 2000s before enjoying an 8-season run (between 2016 and 2018) in Voltron: Legendary Defender. Even though comic books, video games, and an abundance of toys helped to expand the lore,...

Like Voltron itself, the cast for the upcoming movie is assembling nicely. After years of attempting to get a live-action Voltron movie into theaters, the project is finally making progress at Amazon MGM under the direction of Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice. The film is based on Voltron: Defender of the Universe, itself a combination of two separate anime, Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger Xv. During its original run, Voltron was the top-rated syndicated animated series, so interest in adapting it into a feature film has been a high priority for over a decade.
Deadline reveals that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim have joined the cast of Voltron. They join Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn-Toye in the upcoming film. Rawson Marshall Thurber will direct from a script he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman. Amazon MGM.

Henry Cavill has officially been cast for the live-action Voltron movie, which could be the start of his next big superhero franchise. Cavill has proven himself perfect for heroic roles, with his portrayals of both Superman in the Dceu and Geralt in Netflix's The Witcher series allowing him to stand tall as an on-screen defender of the defenseless. However, since he has departed from these franchises, Cavill is wide open. The actor has a lot of exciting projects on the way, but there is something about Voltron that could satisfy those hoping to see Cavill again elevated as something akin to a superhero.
The live-action Voltron movie fits right in with Cavill's filmography. He has begun to define himself as the figurehead of nerd culture, joining up with several beloved fantasy and superhero IPs of which he himself is a fan. Cavill will lead the upcoming Highlander remake movie,...

Amazon MGM Studios’ giant robot Voltron movie is getting a man of steel.
Henry Cavill, the Superman actor and star of The Witcher, has come aboard to topline in the live-action feature based on the mecha anime that Rawson Marshall Thurber is directing.
The actor joins Daniel Quinn-Toye, the newcomer who impressed the studio and director with his West End work opposite Tom Holland, in leading the roll call.
Voltron is based on the Japanese sci-fi series Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger Xv. World Events edited and dubbed the series as a syndicated show, naming it Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which ran in the mid-1980s. The premise centered on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions, which are vehicles that join together to form a mega-robot known as Voltron.
The plot details for the new version is unclear. Thurber wrote the script with Ellen Shanman.

Amazon MGM has tapped Daniel Quinn-Toye to lead its live-action Voltron movie in what will be the young actor's first feature film role. Quinn-Toye was Spider-Man actor Tom Holland's understudy in the West End production of Romeo & Juliet and is now potentially on his own path to stardom.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has not revealed much yet about the plot of the upcoming Voltron, which will begin shooting this fall in Australia. Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice) will direct the film from a script he wrote with Ellen Shaman. The director, Hobie Films' David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman via Hidden Pictures, and World Events Productions' Bob Koplar are producing Voltron. An exhaustive search was conducted by Thurber, the producers, and Amazon for male and female leads, with screen tests held in early and mid-September. Quinn-Toye was one of four to make the male lead shortlist before landing the role,...

The mecha genre is one of the oldest in anime, with roots dating back to the early '60s. While the genre has seen better days, at one point many anime seasons featured several mecha series, and a number of them were incredibly successful.
Even now there are great mecha anime being made, mostly because the creators are so passionate they continue creating new series even though the fandom isn't quite what it once was. While there are hundreds of mecha anime, not all of them have been created equal. Some of them have made invaluable contributions to the genre, and are a large part of why the genre still maintains an active fanbase.

However, anime in the '90s still played an important part in the growth of the medium.
