Kevin Lygo Says John Torode Remained On ITV After ‘MasterChef’ Scandal Because “It Was A Bit Much For Us To Jump On The Bandwagon”
Image
After the MasterChef scandal which saw the sacking of presenters Gregg Wallace and John Torode, Torode’s Weekend Kitchen series remained on ITV.

Questioned over this decision at the Edinburgh TV Festival today, ITV Content boss Kevin Lygo said he “felt it was a bit much for us to jump on the bandwagon and just deny these shows to go out.”

“We didn’t know the details,” he added, before clarifying that Weekend Kitchen was pre-recorded. “We asked the producers if they had heard of any incidences [of bad behavior from Torode] and they said no.”

Lygo refused to say whether he would have continued airing the MasterChef season featuring Wallace and Torode once they had been sacked, a move that the BBC made. “You never know the full story of what has gone on,” he added. “I think the BBC are capable of making that judgement.”

The BBC’s decision to air MasterChef has...

Gary Lineker Confirmed In First Post-BBC Presenting Job On ITV Reality Show ‘The Box’
Image
Update, August 8, 3.20am P.T.: ITV has confirmed Gary Lineker will present The Box, Twofour’s UK remake of the fast-selling Norwegian format.

The former soccer star-turned-presenter said in a statement: “I’ve always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. It’s going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I’m excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action.”

Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment, Reality & Daytime Commissioning at ITV, added: “Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format.”

Fiona Bruce & Nick Robinson Become Highest-Paid BBC News Presenters After Huw Edwards’ Exit
Image
BBC News has two new highest-paid presenters after Huw Edwards exited in ignominy last year.

Fiona Bruce and Nick Robinson both earned as much as £415,000 in the year to March 2025, according to the BBC’s annual report.

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker was the BBC’s best-paid presenter overall for the eighth consecutive year, taking home £1.35M. It will be the last time he tops the list after stepping down in recent weeks.

Robinson, who fronts Radio 4’s Today show, received a £65,000 pay increase thanks to his work on the UK general election, during which he interviewed leaders including Keir Starmer.

Bruce, who presents BBC News bulletins and Question Time, took home a £5,000 bump in salary over the period covered by the annual report.

Although they have replaced Edwards at the top of the BBC News money tree, neither pocketed as much as the former presenter did last year.

Revealed: BBC Tried To Stop ‘Gaza: Doctors Under Attack’ Producer From Making “Disparaging” Remarks Or Suggesting Final Version Of Documentary Was “Authorised or Approved” By The Corporation
Image
Exclusive: The BBC tried to insert a clause into the Gaza: Doctors Under Attack contract preventing the doc’s producer and others from being “disparaging” of the corporation or suggesting the final version that appeared on Channel 4 was “authorised or approved by the BBC.”

Deadline has seen a copy of the amended clause, which Gaza: Doctors Under Attack producer Ben de Pear said on LinkedIn yesterday he refused to sign, describing it as a “double gagging clause.” The doc was commissioned by the BBC but ended up with Channel 4 this week after the BBC said “broadcasting this material risked creating a perception of partiality.”

The amendment states the producer, Basement Films, which is run by de Pear, will “ensure any statements issued or authorised by third party licensees of any version of the Programme are not disparaging of the BBC.”

There should also be no statements from the producer...

Trump Vs Musk Gets BBC ‘Have I Got News For You’ Treatment After Meltdown Occurs During Recording
Image
Exclusive: It was the bust-up that was long predicted, but spectacular nonetheless. Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s steady separation suddenly went thermonuclear on Thursday, with the former Maga mates exchanging Molotovs across two social media platforms.

Deadline hears that the fireworks broke out as Hat Trick Productions was recording the final episode in the current season of BBC comedy series Have I Got News For You. Cameras were about to be shut down for the night when producers decided to throw the Trump-Musk meltdown at presenter Richard Ayoade and teams led by Ian Hislop and Paul Merton.

Have I Got News For You is always filmed up to the wire to maintain its topicality, but it’s rare that producers toss a breaking news story into the mix. We hear that Trump vs Musk will feature towards the end of the show, with Merton and Hislop offering their typically...

BBC Director General Floats Concerning Vision Of Future Where “People Don’t Care” About Nation’s Oldest Public Broadcaster
Image
The BBC makes the UK front pages almost every day but Director General Tim Davie isn’t so worried about that.

Instead, he floated a more worrying vision of the future this morning where “people don’t care” about the nation’s public broadcaster.

“We should not take people caring for granted,” he said. “Institutions are in big trouble if they assume engagement and there is any degree of talk [around them not caring]. We are absolutely the classic patriarchal broadcast organization. The worry is a mainstream weaponization where people don’t care [about the BBC].”

Davie said he is fine with the BBC making headlines, which he described as “one of the joys of our free press… let’ celebrate the fact people care.”

“Neighbors talk to me about what’s going on and who’s going to host Match of the Day, and lots more” added Davie. “But it’s the 10 people on the other side...

BBC Presenter Gary Lineker Bids Emotional Farewell To ‘Match Of The Day’ After Controversial Exit
Image
The BBC’s highest paid presenter Gary Lineker bid fond farewell to his hosting duties on the flagship football highlights show Match of the Day Sunday evening.

Lineker, a former England football player, had been presenting the show since 1999, but earlier this year he announced he’d be stepping down from the high-profile role after 26 years.

However, his departure became controversial a week ago after the BBC announced his resignation following a tweet that could be considered anti-Semitic that Lineker explained he had posted in error.

Sunday evening saw Lineker opening his final show with a cheeky reference to the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding his exit. He told viewers:

“It wasn’t meant to end this way…” and paused before adding: “But with the title race over and the relegation places confirmed, the Champions League was all we had left to talk about.”

Towards the end of the show, however, he...

Gary Lineker To Leave BBC After Sharing Video Featuring Antisemitic Trope
Image
They think it’s all over — it is now. Gary Lineker will leave the BBC after 30 years this weekend.

The BBC’s highest-paid presenter, earning £1.35M ($1.8M), will exit after he presents his final Match of the Day highlights show on Sunday — a year earlier than planned.

Lineker’s abrupt departure follows him sharing a now-deleted Instagram video from the Palestine Lobby account that overlaid a cartoon rat emoji on top of an explainer about the Israel-Gaza war and Zionism. Rats have historically been used as an antisemitic trope.

Lineker apologized for the post, but his position was considered untenable following a string of controversies about his social media use, which have called into question the BBC’s impartiality.

BBC director general Tim Davie said: “Gary has acknowledged the mistake he made. Accordingly, we have agreed he will step back from further presenting after this season.

“Gary has been a...

Gary Lineker Apologizes For Cartoon Rat Re-post After Being Criticized By BBC Director General
Image
Gary Lineker has “apologised unreservedly” for re-posting a video featuring an antisemitic trope after drawing veiled criticism from the BBC Director General.

In a statement in the past few minutes to the BBC, Lineker, who is about to step down from Match of the Day, said: “On Instagram I reposted material which I have since learned contained offensive references. I very much regret these references.”

The video Lineker re-posted then deleted featured a cartoon rat, an antisemitic trope that harks back to 1930s Germany. The rat was overlaid on an explainer of the Israel-Gaza war presented by Canadian-Palestinian lawyer Diana Buttu. Screenshots showed it being flagged up on X as hate speech.

“Whilst I strongly believe in the importance of speaking out on humanitarian issues, including the tragedy unfolding in Gaza, I also know that how we do so matters,” Lineker added. “I take full responsibility for this mistake. That...

BBC to Require New Anti-Bullying Pledge from On-Screen Talent
Tim Davie
Tim Davie told an audience in Salford on May 14 that the BBC will only contract on-screen talent who agree to the anti-bullying code set by the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority. His announcement followed a review, prompted by Huw Edwards’s guilty plea, which found that a small number of misconduct cases had harmed staff morale and public trust.

The Ciisa framework requires safe working environments, inclusive cultures, clear reporting channels and ongoing learning. Davie warned that unchecked power can lead to abuse and pointed to Match of the Day host Gary Lineker’s recent Instagram post—later deleted—as a possible breach of the BBC’s social media rules. He urged all presenters to follow the broadcaster’s guidelines.

Davie also pressed for stronger support for UK television production, calling on government to boost high-end tax credits and aid vulnerable genres to keep British intellectual property on home soil.

BBC Will Only Work With Talent Who Sign Up To New Anti-Bullying Standards, Director General Reveals
Image
The BBC will only work with top talent who sign up to a new set of anti-bullying standards in film and TV, according to the Director General, as he said the public “no longer believes the people in power are acting in their interests.”

Delivering a set-piece speech in Salford this morning, Tim Davie said drastic action is required as the corporation “can no longer work with people where there are risks” of abuse.

His proclamation came two weeks after the release of a review that found a small number of individuals’ behavior was “disproportionately” affecting the BBC’s culture, morale and reputation. This review was sparked by disgraced news anchor Huw Edwards’ guilty plea.

The BBC will therefore only contract talent who sign up to the new standards from the Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority (Ciisa), which were unveiled several months back, Davie said. These standards focus on: ‘Safe...

Gary Lineker Criticized Once Again After Re-posting Video Featuring Antisemitic Trope
Image
Gary Lineker is in hot water once again with less than a fortnight to go until he leaves the BBC’s Match of the Day.

Earlier today, Lineker shared a now-deleted Instagram video from the Palestine Lobby account that overlaid a cartoon rat emoji on top of an explainer about the Israel-Gaza war.

While Lineker has frequently shared content on social media that has fallen within the scope of the BBC’s new social media guidelines, the image of the cartoon rat – an antisemitic trope that harks back to 1930s Nazi Germany – has been heavily criticized. Lineker has since deleted the post. The BBC declined comment.

A spokesman for Lineker said: “Whilst viewing and reposting a video, Gary did not notice a rodent emoticon added by the author of the post. Although if he had, he would not have made any connection. The repost has been removed.”

Gary Lineker Suggests BBC Wanted Him To Leave ‘Match Of The Day’
Image
Gary Lineker, who is soon to hang up his Match of the Day boots after 25 years, has said he felt the BBC wanted him to leave the weekly highlights show.

Lineker, who has had a chequered relationship with the national broadcaster over the past couple of years, told BBC presenter Amol Rajan “perhaps they wanted me to leave… there was a sense of that” when discussing his exit.

He was responding to a question from Rajan for an Amol Rajan Interviews episode on why he is choosing to leave now when the show is doing so well. “Perhaps they wanted me to leave,” was Lineker’s response.

Lineker, who is being replaced by three hosts next season, is remaining with the BBC to present Fa Cup and World Cup coverage along with podcasts and he said that while this move is “slightly unusual… to be honest it’s a scenario that suits me perfectly.

Gary Lineker, Riz Ahmed, Ken Loach, Indira Varma Join Hundreds In Signing Open Letter Condemning BBC “Censorship On Palestine” As Gaza Documentary Row Deepens

Five hundred people from the entertainment world, including Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, Riz Ahmed, Ken Loach, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett, and Game of Thrones actor Indira Varma, have put their names to a letter to BBC bosses calling on the corporation to “stop censorship on Palestine.”

The letter comes after the BBC removed from iPlayer the doc after it emerged that it was narrated by the son of a Hamas minister, information that the BBC said the doc’s producers failed to relay. The letter, which was also signed by actors Khalid Abdalla, India Amarteifio, Miriam Margolyes, Ruth Negga, and Juliet Stevenson, did not deny the narrator’s links to Hamas but said his father, Dr Ayman Al-Yazouri, served as Gaza’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a “civil service role concerned with food production.

BBC Names Gary Lineker’s ‘Match Of The Day’ Replacements

Promotion: Three New Anime Shows To Get Excited By In 2025

If You Want... Nostalgic, Family-friendly Fun You Might Like... Dragon Ball Daima

There’s never been a better time to be an anime fan. With a frankly gobsmacking amount of variety and quality, the kinds of shows once limited to very obscure Japanese imports are now widely available via the massive libraries of dedicated streaming platforms like Crunchyroll — often on the same day, or near enough, to the original Japanese release. With this year’s autumn season promising massive high-profile blockbuster hits, here are three shows that ought to be on your anime-radar.

Dragon Ball hardly needs any introduction. Spiky-haired martial arts hero Son Goku has been battling foes and gathering Dragon Balls for four decades — and still looks as fresh-faced as ever. The latest show in the franchise, Dragon Ball Daima, marks the 40th anniversary of the series, as well as the final project creator Akira Toriyama worked on...

BBC Presenter Alex Scott Says Trolls “Threatened To Throw Acid In Her Face”

British TV presenter Alex Scott has revealed that online trolls threatened to throw acid in her face, leaving her scared to leave her home.

Scott is a former England footballer with 140 national caps to her name who hosts Football Focus and has been the occasional presenter for The One Show and Match of the Day. She told The Times newspaper that when she was mentioned in a list of possible replacements for another BBC sports show, her critics rushed to attack her online.

She said:

“I’ve had plenty of racism, abuse and even death threats. When I was reported incorrectly to be replacing national treasure Sue Barker as the host of A Question of Sport, people were saying, ‘She’s only on TV because she’s black, female and younger. She’s just ticking boxes.’”

Scott added:

Gary Lineker’s Goalhanger Shuts TV Production Arm To Focus On Podcasts
Image
Exclusive: Goalhanger, the influential UK podcast company co-founded by Gary Lineker, is closing its TV production arm to focus on audio content.

Lineker and business partner Tony Pastor are voluntarily liquidating Goalhanger Films Ltd, which was the outfit’s original incarnation, founded in 2014.

Goalhanger Films produced documentaries including Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health for the BBC and Keane & Vieira – Best of Enemies for ITV.

Pastor told Deadline that the success of podcasts including The Rest Is History and The Rest Is Entertainment meant the company had switched its focus to Goalhanger Podcasts.

“We effectively mothballed Films and set up a bespoke company concentrating on podcasts,” he said. “There was a period in which I ran them in tandem, but the growth of podcasts was so explosive and television is challenged, so we’ve now done some housekeeping.”

He added: “We’ve gone from a production company being entirely...

The Contenders To Succeed Gary Lineker On Iconic BBC Premier League Show ‘Match Of The Day’
Image
Gary Lineker’s departure from Match of the Day has been one of the worst kept secrets in British television, but confirmation of the news today brings the curtain down on a 25-year era for the iconic Premier League highlights show.

Match of the Day is a television institution in the UK and, having averaged 2M viewers for BBC1 on Saturday nights this season, it remains an important part of the soccer schedule at time when highlights and goal clips are readily available online.

Lineker has been central to show’s continued relevance. That rare combination of accomplished former pro and world-class broadcaster, he has a loyal fanbase and the ability to generate headlines with an arch flick of his eyebrow or a knowing gag at the expense of his co-hosts.

For the most part, this has been good for the BBC and for Lineker, even if the relationship has...

BBC’s Highest Paid Presenter Gary Lineker Jokes About His Rumoured Exit Live On Air
Image
The BBC’s highest paid presenter Gary Lineker opened the sporting highlights show Match of the Day Saturday night, telling viewers: “It’s my last show…”

… then continued: “… before the international break.”

Lineker was referencing intense speculation that the BBC were seeking to terminate his contract before its expiry mid-2025. Several media reported that an email had been leaked by the BBC’s sports chief, thanking Lineker for his service after 25 years hosting the show.

The Sun newspaper reports that the BBC has refused to say the email is a fake, that Lineker is in talks with BBC executives about his future, quoting sources at the broadcaster saying it’s “business as usual” in the meantime.

There is also talk of the presenter taking a substantial pay cut to continue his role with the BBC, which continues to have to make cuts across the board in line with the plateaued...

Gary Lineker’s Future At BBC In Doubt Amid Claims Bosses Are Drafting His Exit Announcement
Image
Gary Lineker’s future as the BBC’s highest-paid presenter appears to be in doubt after the leak of an email purporting to be a draft announcement about his departure.

MailOnline said it had seen an email that suggested BBC chiefs, including director general Tim Davie, were drawing up a press notice about Lineker’s exit. MailOnline said it was unable to confirm the authenticity of the email. The BBC is not confirming or denying its existence.

The email purports to be from Alex Kay-Jelski, the BBC’s director of sport, and its contents suggest that Saturday will be Lineker’s last appearance on Match of the Day, the Premier League highlights show. It reportedly features a comment from Davie, who describes Lineker as a “world-class presenter.”

A BBC insider said Saturday is not Lineker’s final show and there are no imminent plans to announce his departure, though it...

As Huw Edwards Is Spared Jail, BBC Insiders Prepare To Dish Dirt In Workplace Culture Review
Image
As Huw Edwards stood for his sentencing after pleading guilty to accessing child abuse images, he clasped his hands and projected a neutral expression. It was a pose millions of BBC viewers will have seen Edwards strike countless times as the seasoned presenter delivered the day’s headlines. His audience on this occasion, however, was a courtroom.

The 63-year-old news anchor was ultimately spared jail after a judge ruled that his guilty plea, remorse, exemplary professional record, and existential mental health struggles were mitigation enough for a suspended sentence. Some believe Edwards is lucky not to be behind bars after viewing unspeakably indecent images of children as young as seven, but as the judge unsparingly reminded him, his reputation and career prospects are in tatters.

Soon after Edwards walked out of Westminster Magistrates’ Court a registered sex offender, the thoughts of some of his former colleagues shifted to the next...

Fired BBC Presenter Jermaine Jenas Admits Sending Inappropriate Messages; Says He’s “No Sex Pest”
Image
The BBC presenter fired this week has broken his silence to admit he sent “inappropriate messages” to two colleagues.

Former footballer Jermaine Jenas gave an interview to The Sun in which he said he was “ashamed” and “had let everybody down.”

He revealed he had sent messages to two female colleagues on the BBC’s daily evening magazine TV program The One Show, but said he done nothing illegal, that the messages were sent to “two consenting adults,” and that he was “not a sex pest.”

Following previous incidents in which the BBC had been criticised for not acting swiftly enough in dealing with claims made against some of their high-profile faces, the broadcaster terminated Jenas’s contract on Thursday, several weeks after the allegations came to light. No further details of Jenas’s departure have been revealed.

In the interview Jenas added:

He is aware he has a proclivity to “self-sabotage,...

‘The One Show’ Presenter Jermaine Jenas Out at the BBC Amid Reports of ‘Inappropriate Behavior’
Image
“The One Show” and “Match of the Day” presenter Jermaine Jenas is no longer employed by the BBC.

“We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting line up,” a BBC spokesperson told Variety after news broke in The Sun of his firing. Though the tabloid cited “inappropriate behavior” as the cause, the BBC did not provide a reason for his exit.

Meanwhile, BBC News cited sources who said his firing was due to “workplace conduct” and occurred after complaints were raised a few weeks ago. It appears that Jenas has also been removed from the website of his agency, Mc Saatchi.

In an interview on TalkSport as the news broke, Jenas said he couldn’t say too much but is “not happy about this situation. You know, I’m going to be speaking to my lawyers about it — that is all I can say right now.
