Image
Aespa is all about reinvention.

The four-piece girl group, hailing from Korean label Sm Entertainment, have been ahead of the curve since their 2020 debut. The group debuted with at-the-time revolutionary concept tied to the metaverse, where every member had a corresponding avatar. But now, approaching five years as a group, Karina, Giselle, Winter and Ningning seemingly feel they’ve found the Aespa they’ve always wanted to be.

“I think what people think of Aespa, right now, since maybe 2024-ish, I think that’s where the image that we were thinking from the beginning started to be shown to the people who see us,” Giselle tells The Hollywood Reporter on a Zoom from Sm’s Seoul headquarters.

Building off the success of their 2024 hits “Supernova” and “Whiplash,” Aespa’s latest single, “Dirty Work (Feat. Flo Milli),” is primed to become the group’s latest chart-topping hit. “Dirty Work,” which racked...

'Godzilla X Kong' Sequel Star Reveals Movie Will Address Biggest Complaint About Human Characters
Image
The upcoming Monsterverse movie Godzilla X Kong: Supernova is shaping up to be the biggest film in the franchise yet. Originally intended to serve as an exciting conclusion to the franchise, Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) ultimately reinvigorated the series, paving the way for the sequel, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. However, one constant complaint that has been levied against the series since 2014, with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla, is a lack of an engaging human narrative to pair with the intense kaiju fights. According to one actor in the upcoming film, that specific complaint will be addressed in Supernova.

In an interview with Ktvu in Oakland, Delroy Lindo, who recently made waves for his performance as Delta Slim in Ryan Coogler's Sinners, talked about his upcoming role in Godzilla X Kong: Supernova. As the actor would tell the news station, it was the production team's dedication to crafting an engaging human character...

Godzilla X Kong: Supernova Star Explains How The Sequel Is Tackling The Oldest Monsterverse Problem
Image
Godzilla X Kong: Supernova star Delroy Lindo provides some perspective on how the next entry in Legendary's Monsterverse could break new ground with its human cast. While very little is known about the plot of Godzilla X Kong: Supernova, the non-Titan cast list has been steadily growing for months now, and it's loaded with renowned stars like Lindo.

In an interview segment with Ktvu in Oakland, Lindo got into his experience on the set of the upcoming third team-up between Godzilla and Kong. He specifically noted his appreciation for the producers from Legendary and Warner Bros. for their vision for the movie:

I appreciated the fact that these producers are equally cognizant of the fact that the human element in these narratives needs to be as strong as possible. And from that standpoint, they worked with me to flesh out the character they wanted me to play...we worked to...

One Piece: We May Finally Know Why the Holy Knights Can Regenerate and There’s Only 1 Way Luffy Can Beat Them
Image
Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for the Elbaph Arc of One Piece!

The revelation that the power of immortality isn’t limited to Imu and the Five Elders, but also the Holy Knights, fans are worried about how the Straw Hats will win this fight. In the latest chapter of One Piece, Gunko regenerated her body like it hadn’t just been blown off. They might be the worst enemies they’ve faced.

However, like for any One Piece antagonist, there has to be a loophole or a weakness. Fans have observed that the Five Elders and the Holy Knights have one power mechanic in common: the Abyss.

They can travel vast distances in the blink of an eye, thanks to this magic circle, but what if that’s not the only power it grants them? Their immortality could be tied to the Abyss if it allows them to leave behind their physical bodies,...

One Piece: Jarul the Traitor Theory Makes a Lot of Sense When You Realize Oda Dropped a Subtle Hint in Big Mom Arc
Image
The events of the Elbaph Arc in One Piece have taken a serious turn ever since the God’s Knights executed their plan of kidnapping the giant kids and forcing Elbaph to ally with the World Government. Theories are also flying about a potential traitor who is either supporting the God’s Knights’ plans or had a hand in the current situation of the giant nation.

While many characters in Elbaph perfectly fit the traitor description, the biggest one among them is Jarul, the former co-captain of the Giant Warrior Pirates. As of now, Jarul is the oldest giant in Elbaph, and he has had a history with the accursed prince Loki, who supposedly tried to kill him when he was battling his father for the legendary One Piece Devil Fruit.

There are a few hints that Eiichiro Oda has dropped about Jarul being the traitor, but the biggest one...

One Piece Va Is Delusional For Thinking Marco Can Give Luffy Tough Time in a Fight If He Wants to Be a Pirate King
Image
No one can disagree that One Piece has some of the strongest characters in anime history. Characters like Kaido can shake entire islands with their power, while legends like Whitebeard can shake the ocean. Among these powerful characters is Luffy, the inheritor of Joyboy’s will and the newest Emperor of the Sea.

Luffy’s Nika Fruit is unstoppable, and his power is unfathomable. One needs to be on the level of an Elder to match the strength of his Fifth Gear. Kyle Phillips, the English Va for Marco, however, seems to think that his character might be able to give Luffy a run for his money. Is this delusion? Or does he make a good point?

Kyle Phillips thinks Marco can give Luffy a tough time Marco prevents the Big Mom Pirates from entering Wano | Credits: Toei Animation

Ash Review: A sci-fi horror flick in the vein of Event Horizon
Image
Plot: An astronaut (Eiza Gonzalez) wakes up on a distant planet and discovers her entire crew has been killed. Suffering from amnesia, she soon meets a fellow astronaut (Aaron Paul) who says he was part of her team, but she’s unsure whether she can trust him.

Review: Space horror is a reliable sub-genre of the sci-fi universe. Alien is the king of the castle as far as it goes, but the vastness of space is always a good place to set a horror flick, and it’s a genre that I have a particular weakness for. Event Horizon is a favourite of mine, and I even like the not-great ones, like the campy Saturn 3 or The Black Hole. Ash owes a lot to the genre classics, with director Flying Lotus clearly having a deep bench of genre knowledge. However, his influences aren’t limited to film, with many...

Image
Nova Twins have announced their third album, Parasites & Butterflies, out August 29th, and released the new single “Soprano.”

The UK duo of Amy Love and Georgia South called the new song “a celebration of the power of women, especially when we unite.”

“The industry often pits women against each other, and women’s voices are silenced worldwide,” they stated via a press release. “But we are still shouting from the rooftops! This song aims to empower, encourage connection, and promote friendship, spreading ‘boss energy’ and lifting each other up.”

The track melds nu-metal rap verses with a chorus and bridges that branch into synthy hyperpop and pop R&b, showcasing Nova Twins’ varied sonic palette and a deliberate contrast in styles — reflecting the theme of the album. It marks the second single from Parasites & Butterflies following the release of “Monsters” in January.

Begging for Aylmer’s Juice in ‘Brain Damage’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Sophia Takal in Gabi on the Roof in July (2010)
Beg For My Juice

Trace and I have had another wild month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), then crossed off Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with a discussion of Death Proof (listen). After tackling George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen) to tie in to Leigh Whannell’s new film, we’re sucking the juice out of our very first Frank Henenlotter film with 1988’s Brain Damage.

In the film, Brian (Rick Hearst) discovers a parasite named Aylmer (voiced by John Zacherle) has attached itself to his brain stem. Brian becomes addicted to the psychedelic euphoria Aylmer’s blue “juice” gives him, but in return, the slug demands to be fed human victims.

As his (ex) girlfriend Barbara (Jennifer Lowry) and brother Mike (Gordon MacDonald...

Star Trek Never Really Dealt With Spock & Picard’s Greatest Tragedy
Image
Star Trek never showed the full aftermath of one of the franchise's greatest tragedies that profoundly affected Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Although there have been several major disasters throughout Star Trek's vast timeline, few cataclysmic events were as devastating as the Romulan supernova that took place in 2387. Starfleet mounted a massive rescue effort upon learning of the supernova, but the rescue armada was mostly destroyed when rogue synths attacked the Utopia Planitia shipyards on Mars. Starfleet then called off the rescue effort and went on the defensive.

Introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series, the Romulans have long been enemies of the United Federation of Planets, and the devastating Romulan supernova altered the balance of power in Star Trek's galaxy. A disaster like this should have affected everyone in the Beta Quadrant, the Federation, and neighboring star systems, but the Romulan supernova...

Stanley Tucci Says ‘Captain America’ Was ‘One of the Greatest Roles’ He’s Had, Even Though He Was ‘Insulted’ by the Casting
Image
Stanley Tucci is falling on Marvel’s shield amid the cinephile discord.

The actor told Variety that his small role in 2011 tentpole Marvel film “Captain America: The First Avenger” was one of his most beloved experiences.

“You also have the fun big movies that you do,” Tucci said of balancing indies with blockbusters. “I loved ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ it was one of the greatest roles and jobs I’ve ever had. I was there for three weeks and had a wonderful time, and I also loved playing that character.”

However, Tucci quipped that he was originally “insulted” by his casting as a much older character.

“I was cast as a 70-year-old man at the age of 50, so that was disturbing,” he said, “but that’s all right; I was flattered and insulted at the same time … You have to mix it up, as they say.”

Tucci also reflected on his smaller films,...

'Flattered and Insulted at the Same Time': Stanley Tucci on What He Liked (And Didn't Like) About MCU Role
Image
Veteran actor Stanley Tucci is enjoying more success with his latest role in the acclaimed movie Conclave. However, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans may still remember him fondly from his role in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.

Per Variety, Tucci took a moment to reflect on his time spent playing Abraham Erskine in the first Captain America movie. He first commented on appearing Harry Macqueen's indie movie Supernova, noting how he felt "sad" for the director after the "extraordinary" film didn't get the awards recognition it deserved. Getting overlooked is something that often happens with more independent films, though Tucci also knows what it's like to feature in big-budget blockbusters in the vein of the McU's superhero movies. While Tucci still feels that his MCU role is one of the best jobs he's ever had, he also admits it was "disturbing" to be cast as a character 20 years older than his real age.

Stanley Tucci on Being Shocked by ‘Diversity of the Audience’ for ‘Conclave’ and Status of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel
Image
It’s been 15 years since Stanley Tucci picked up his first Oscar nomination for “The Lovely Bones”; now, the character actor is back in the awards conversation, with his remarkable turn as a liberal cardinal being eyed to become the new pope in the Edward Berger’s “Conclave.”

Distributed by Focus Features, the film tells a fictionalized story about the pope selection process as secrets and alliances are exposed within the Catholic Church, reuniting Tucci with veteran actors Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini.

But it marks his first time working with Berger, who helmed the German-language war film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which netted four Oscars. Tucci describes Berger as a “very straightforward” director, who “has very specific ideas about what to do” without being dogmatic.

Variety had the opportunity to chat with Tucci about the multigenerational appeal of his old school thriller, how he bounces back and...

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Semi-Finals: Here’s Who’s Competing in the Finale
Image
This story contains spoilers for the Nov. 19 episode of “Dancing With the Stars”

In Tuesday night’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars,” each of the five remaining couples performed one ballroom dance and one Latin dance but only four earned enough points and votes to go on to next week’s finale… at least that’s how the show usually works.

The elimination came down to the two Olympic athletes: Ilona Maher and Stephen Nedoroscik… but, in a repeat of Season 32, no one was sent home before the finale. Which means all five couples will be competing in the finale.

Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson earned their first perfect score for a Foxtrot to “I Won’t Dance” by Erin Boheme. The beaming “Bachelor” star said, “Never got one of those before. Feels really good!” Derek Hough raved, “Fred Astaire is high-fiving you right now,” and dubbed it “one...

Hong Kong Remake of ‘Tape’ to Unspool Trailer Ahead of Theatrical Release
Image
“Tape,” a Hong Kong remake of Richard Linklater’s iconic 2001 psychological thriller film of the same title, is heading for the American Film Market and theatrical release in its adopted territory. In anticipation of those steps, the producers are unreeling a “Tape” trailer.

“Tape” explores the fallout from a traumatic event at a high school graduation party, forcing the three former friends to confront their past in a story that delves into themes of power, manipulation, and the subjective nature of truth. The remake transposes the story from the U.S. to Hong Kong, a region that has yet to fully reckon with the #MeToo movement, while adapting to today’s technology-dependent age.

The new film is directed by banker turned film producer and director Bizhan Tong. It stars Kenny Kwan, Selena Lee (“Queen of News”) and Adam Pak (“A Guilty Conscience”) in roles originally portrayed by Robert Sean Leonard,...

Image
Stanley Tucci recently opened up about the unexpected challenges he faced in his acting career after his acclaimed role in The Devil Wears Prada.

Despite the film’s immense success, Tucci, now 63, revealed in a Vanity Fair interview that finding work afterward was difficult.

“After The Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t get a job, and I didn’t quite understand that, but that’s just the way it was. So I went and did stuff that I didn’t necessarily want to do, but I did it,” Tucci shared while promoting his latest project, Conclave.

Reflecting on His Career

Under the direction of editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), he portrayed magazine art director Nigel Kipling in Prada, who assisted the lead heroine Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway) in navigating the fast-paced fashion world.

Oasis Set To Return To North America For Concert Tour – Setlist & Ticket Deals
Image
Legendary rock band Oasis announced that after a 15-year feud between the two brothers, they have settled their differences and plan to embark on a 2025 North American tour.

Seven stadium dates in North America are set for next summer, with shows in Toronto, New Jersey, Chicago, Mexico City and Los Angeles, and various sources have reported that the band is also expected to tour outside of the continent later in the year. Celebrated rock group Cage the Elephant will open for the Britpop duo.

Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher formed Oasis in 1991, and the band went on to produce some of the most prominent songs of the 90s. To this day, their hit ‘Wonderwall’ is the quintessential song men use to demonstrate their acoustic guitar skills, usually at parties or on dates.

The Electric State on Netflix | When is an adaptation not an adaptation?
Image
Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi adventure The Electric State adapts a much-loved art book by Simon Stalenhag. Or does it? We weigh up what counts as an adaptation.

Does Netflix read YouTube comments? If so, it’s a wonder what it makes of the 2,200 (and counting) responses beneath the debut trailer for its upcoming movie, The Electric State. They’re not what you’d call enthusiastic.

“It’s literally an art book,” reads one. “How did they make it look so wrong.”

“The tone looks nothing like the book whatsoever,” reads another. “I loved the hopeless, lonely, and dystopian feel of the source material.”

It’s churlish to judge a film too harshly based on its marketing, of course, but watching the 147-second promo for Netflix’s upcoming, (reported) $320m sci-fi adventure raises a number of questions. Most pressingly: why option Swedish artist and author Simon Stalenhag’s graphic novel of...

Star Trek: Picards Timeline Explained - How Long After Tng Is Jean-Lucs Show?
Image
With the advent of new Star Trek streaming shows came Star Trek: Picard, a sequel series to Star Trek: The Next Generation that focused on Patrick Stewart's Admiral Jean-Luc Picard long after Tng ended. After first announcing Picard as a new Star Trek show in August 2018, followed by a year of production, Star Trek: Picard's first season dropped on Paramount+ (then CBS All Access) in January 2020. The second and third seasons of Star Trek: Picard were filmed back-to-back to accommodate the schedules of the cast and crew, and released in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Because Patrick Stewart and other Star Trek actors in Star Trek: Picard's first season had clearly aged, it could be assumed that the same amount of time had passed for the characters and the real world alike, but that wasn't quite the case. Although 18 years had passed between audiences' last contact with Captain Jean-Luc Picard...

Jeremy Strong Says Criticizing Straight Actors for Playing Gay Roles Is ‘Absolutely Valid’
Image
Jeremy Strong recently told the Los Angeles Times that “it’s absolutely valid” to criticize straight actors for playing gay characters, although he also strongly believes that it’s an actor’s job “to render something that is not necessarily your native habitat.” Strong stars as Donald Trump’s mentor Roy Cohn in “The Apprentice.”

“Yes, it’s absolutely valid,” Strong said about the criticism. “I’m sort of old fashioned, maybe, in the belief that, fundamentally, it’s [about] a person’s artistry, and that great artists, historically, have been able to, as it were, change the stamp of their nature. That’s your job as an actor. The task, in a way, is to render something that is not necessarily your native habitat.”

“While I don’t think that it’s necessary [for gay roles to be played by gay performers], I think that it would be good if that were given more weight,” Strong added.

The debate...

What Happened To Captain Worfs Enterprise? Star Trek: Picard Mystery May Have Been Solved
Image
A Star Trek fan theory may solve Star Trek: Picard's mystery of what happened to the USS Enterprise-e, which Captain Worf (Michael Dorn) claims was not his fault. Star Trek: Picard season 3, episode 9, "Vox," saw the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation come aboard the rebuilt USS Enterprise-d. En route to the Enterprise's dock at the Fleet Museum, however, Worf's Tng friends teased him about the fate of the Enterprise-e, and the Klingon insisted, "That was not my fault." What happened to the Enterprise-e remains an open question Star Trek: Picard left behind.

The Sovereign Class USS Enterprise-e was launched in 2373 prior to Star Trek: First Contact. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) commanded the Enterprise-e in three Star Trek: The Next Generation movies, including First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and Star Trek: Nemesis. Star Trek: Picard season 1 revealed that Captain Picard received a promotion to Admiral in 2381 to...
