Every state has its own histories, landscapes, and stories worth telling, but some lend themselves to more visually stimulating tales than others. There are bland-looking states that shall remain unnamed, and then there are ones that feel intriguing and inviting no matter which way the camera's pointed. Hawaii is an obvious pick on that count, but Alaska gives it a real run for the top spot. It is an endlessly stunning place to be with natural beauty staring you down from every direction. That beauty can come at a cost, though, as nature can be both unrelenting and unforgiving.
That reality, when coupled with the vast size of the state and a sparse population, leaves it ripe for drama, danger, and stories about isolation both intentional and otherwise. It's a place where a detective can be driven mad by the lack of night ("Insomnia"), a humorously inappropriate romance can take...

Land of Bad records one of the worst box office weekends for any of Russell Crowe's films. The action thriller struggled with a low Rotten Tomatoes score and only opened in 1,120 theaters, impacting its performance. Despite its disappointing numbers, Land of Bad boasts a respectable per-cinema average.
Land of Bad is just that… bad. What started out as a slew of terrible reviews on Rotten Tomatoes has turned into a nightmare at the box office. Actor Russell Crowe’s latest big-screen adventure has turned out to be one of his worst performers in theaters. And even with that extra day over the long holiday weekend, thanks to Washington’s Birthday, Land of Bad barely squeaked its way into the Top 10.
According to Box Office Mojo, Land of Bad landed the No. 10 spot at the domestic box office with an estimated total of $2 million for the four-day weekend ($1.8 million for...

Russell Crowe has sustained multiple injuries throughout his career due to physically demanding movie roles, including torn Achilles tendons, a disintegrating hip, missing cartilage in his toes, shoulder injuries, and bone marrow edemas in his knees. The filming of "Gladiator" contributed to Crowe's Achilles injuries and disintegrating hip, while other films like "Mystery, Alaska" and "Cinderella Man" also added to his injury list. Crowe's injuries were a result of the intense physicality and dangerous nature of the action sequences in his films, and despite the risks, he persevered and pushed through the rigorous physical demands of his roles.
Russell Crowe has starred in some physically intensive movies, resulting in several injuries. The 59-year-old movie star began his career in the 1990s, appearing in Australian films before earning international acclaim for his roles in L.A. Confidential and The Insider. Longtime NHL analyst and former hockey coach and player Barry Melrose is retiring from ESPN after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
““I’ve had over 50 extraordinary years playing, coaching and analyzing the world’s greatest game, hockey,” he said in a statement. “It’s now time to hang up my skates and focus on my health, my family, including my supportive wife Cindy, and whatever comes next.”
The news was first revealed by Melrose’s friend and network colleague John Buccigross, just hours before the 2023-2024 NHL season begins.
“I’ve worked with Barry at ESPN for over a quarter century. Cold beers and hearty laughs in smokey cigar bars,” Buccigross wrote on X along with a tribute video from ESPN. “A razor sharp wit, he was always early & looked like a million bucks. I love him. I’ll miss him.”

Marvyn Korn is no Ted Lasso. But he might have to be in order to thrive, both as a coach and as the main character of a new streaming TV show.

The Mystery of Why Top TV Producers Shonda Rhimes, Greg Berlanti and Chuck Lorre Haven’t Won an Emmy
Shonda Rhimes, Chuck Lorre and Greg Berlanti are easily the most powerful producers on TV. Yet none of them have ever won a Primetime Emmy.
Ten years ago, that might not have been the case. But Rhimes, Lorre and Berlanti produce populist fare for (mostly) broadcast networks, at a time when those shows are no longer on the Emmy radar.
In 2016, the broadcasters were shut out of the top Emmy categories for the first time in the award’s history. Never before had the top drama, comedy and actor and actress prizes gone exclusively to cable and streaming services.
But last year’s results were the culmination of a trend that began when “The Sopranos” star Edie Falco won the Emmy in 1999 for Outstanding Drama actress. By 2001, HBO had grabbed the first outstanding series prize for a cable series (“Sex and the City”), as well as both top drama acting...

The Big Short (Adam McKay)
Co-writer / director Adam McKay made a genuine Adam McKay film with The Big Short. The director of Step Brothers isn’t exactly known for drama, but his outrageous sense of humor serves this fierce, angry, high-stakes tale of outsiders. In exploring the recent financial crisis in a way that’s entertaining, funny, and shocking to watch unfold, The Big Short is the rare example of a film built entirely on exposition that can still work.

Joe Dirt is back with a vengeance, and a mop.
Reprising their roles alongside Spade will be Oscar winner Christopher Walken (Wedding Crashers), Brittany Daniel (“The Game”), Dennis Miller, and Adam Beach (Flags Of Our Fathers). Patrick Warburton (“Rules of Engagement”), Mark McGrath (Sharknado 2), Charlotte McKinney (“Dancing with the Stars”) and Kevin Farley also star in the sequel.

Whether you loved the original Joe Dirt or detested its idiocy, it doesn’t really matter: a sequel is on the way. Announced back in October of last year, the movie witnesses the return of its titular white trash character who is played again by David Spade. Back one more with a rat-tailed mullet, Spade is revving the engine on another road trip that arrives some 14 years after the original and now, you can catch a glimpse of the ageing Mr. Dirt and his upcoming adventure in the the first trailer for Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser.
As comedy sequels go, it appears to hit all of the necessary marks, paying homage to the first one while throwing in some new elements to ‘spice up’ Dirt’s antics.
“Joe ‘Keeps on keepin’ on,’” the actor told EW. “He’s married now and doing his best, but things don’t all go perfectly for him,...

The Fall TV show premiere week continues. A quiet Wednesday saw only one new show debut, "Back In The Game," which managed only a modest 2.2 rating.
Otherwise it was a mix of returning shows which all seemed to be down on previous years. Suffering drops were "Criminal Minds" (-10%), Survivor" (-12%), "CSI" (-16%), "The Middle" (-17%), "Modern Family" (-25%) and "Nashville" (-25%).
NBC's "Revolution" in particular was down 56% compared with its launch last year, but only 10% down from its first season finale. Having lost its "The Voice" lead-in had a major impact as well.
One veteran show that did well was "South Park" over on Comedy Central. The animated series pulled in 2.89 million viewers and a 4.1 rating, up 10% on last year.
On Thursday night, things heated up again with several new shows and a bunch of major returning series.

Stoke City host a Manchester City side who have been looking out of sorts in their last two Premier League games this season.
After thrashing a lacklustre Newcastle United on the opening day, the Citizens lost to newly-promoted outfit Cardiff City, before unconvincingly scraping past newly-promoted Hull City less than a week later.
While the Premier League runners-up will be regarded as slim favourites for victory against Stoke this weekend, the Potters have reason to cheer early on this season.

Online fundraising is a fickle mistress. When Smosh kicked off an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for Food Battle: The Game, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that the top YouTube channel would easily reach its fundraising goal. After all, top YouTube creators like Toby Turner, Hannah Hart, and Freddie Wong had previously killed it on Kickstarter and Indiegogo, so why would a creative pair with more subscribers than any of those people fall short? Oh, how wrong we were. For whatever reason, Smosh's Indiegogo campaign hasn't lived up to expectations. With only a few hours left, Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla are still several thousand dollars short of their $250,000 goal, and they need to energize their fan their fans if they hope to collect the cool quarter million they desire. To raise awareness for the campaign, Smosh has launched its first ever live stream, with Ian and Anthony...

When I came up with the idea to start aggregating the various Criterion Collection related blogs that I read on a somewhat regular basis into a weekly column, I had grand plans to set up reminders for myself, bookmark posts into folders, and produce a compelling weekly blog post for all of you. Unfortunately, the birth of my daughter, and all of the other responsibilities of my life have managed to position themselves between me and that goal. I thought maybe if I switched to a monthly format, that would make things easier, but in reality it just gave me less of an excuse to work on the post. I’ve decided to reboot the column and produce it on a weekly basis. We’ll see if I can keep it going this time. As much as I pretend to be organized and productive, I am really a lazy, lazy guy.

Here are the complete details …
What year had the best movies? It’s a simple question, right? No. You’re wrong. How could you think that it’s simple? How do we break it down? Does every movie count? What year do we start? Settle down. I’ve figured it out.
To decide what year has the best movies, we’re starting with 2010 and working backwards 32 years. Why 32? Because then we can put it in a bracket just like the Ncaa Final Four. For each year,...

To decide what year has the best movies, we’re starting with 2010 and working backwards 32 years. Why 32? Because then we can put it in a bracket just like the Ncaa Final Four. For each year, Tsr has listed seven notable films. The key word is notable. Well, actually films would be the key word, but you get my point. Yes, you should consider any and all movies from a given year. I just gave you a reference to some of the key movies in a given year. Why seven? Well, we do Top 7 lists, so that’s why we’ve helped you out with seven suggestions from that year.

Joseph Gatt and Justin Bruening have has been cast in NBC‘s Wonder Woman. The 2011 Wonder Woman production sees Joseph Gatt as a retainer of Elizabeth Hurley‘s Veronica Cale. Joseph Gatt will be “a physical presence against Wonder Woman” on the superhero TV series. What that basically means is that Wonder Woman (Adrianne Palicki) and Joseph Gatt will be fighting on screen during David E. Kelly‘s pilot. “It’s assumed that should the series be picked up that Gatt will join as a recurring character.”
So who is Joseph Gatt you ask and what has he been in previously?
Gatt shot his first film role in Greece, playing opposite Oliver Reed, in Orpheus & Eurydice. Among other roles, Gatt performed in Miss Saigon, produced by Cameron Mackintosh ‘Len Miller’ in ITV’s police drama The BillSaurian, for the Sci-Fi Channel ’Incubus’ in Killing Ariel and ‘Uber Phantom’ in the...

Wednesday was an awesome day for writer Niel Strauss. First his book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life was optioned by Robert Downey Jr. and Columbia Pictures and then, later that same day, The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired to adapt his book The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. If Wednesday was was Niel Strauss Day, then today is Daniel H. Wilson Day. No less than four hours after it was announced that Steven Spielberg will make Wilson's Robopocalypse his next film, io9 reports that Jack Black and Steve Pink, the director of Hot Tub Time Machine and writer of Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity, have optioned the rights to How To Survive a Robot Uprising: Tips on Defending Yourself Against the Coming Rebellion. The project has been around for years, Mike Myers previously owning the rights, but nothing has...

With Geoff Johns (The Flash) scripting an episode Smallville, folks are in anticipation of which characters from the Justice Society would actually show up.
The recent news breaking on the street is that Hawkman, Doctor Fate and Stargirl will be showing up. So we can now add these three to the other cast of heroes that will be gracing the episodes of Smallville, such as Green Arrow’s sidekick, Speedy (Appearing October 23rd) and the Wonder Twins.
What has me worried. though, is who is reportedly playing Hawkman. Michael Shanks (Stargate Sg-1) is slated to appear as Hawkman. I’m happy to see Michael getting work, but I’m worried - as in career move worried. Is this the best direction Michael can go? I’ve been hoping for bigger, better roles from him since his time on Stargate. But that’s just me.
Brent Stait will be playing Doctor...

For our final class of our EW University course on TV Auteurs, Prof. Jennifer Armstrong is back to address the lack of diversity in our list, and in the TV industry as a whole. Aaron Sorkin, Aaron Spelling, Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams: All great auteurs, with distinct voices and visions, who left indelible marks on television. All genuinely brilliant in their own ways. All deserving of auteur status. And, of course, all white men. When we assembled our list of TV visionaries to discuss in this EW U course, there was no arguing with the names we chose. We could’ve added a few more –- a David E. Kelley or a Seth MacFarlane or a Chuck Lorre -– but, guess what! Those are still more white men. Distinctive talents, sure. But when it comes to offering a broad range of perspectives, television still lags behind, you know, real life.
