Gene Roddenberry helped create one of the modern pillars of science fiction with Star Trek. Roddenberry's vision of a future where mankind overcame its petty differences and explored the stars proved to be the inspiration for a wellspring of science fiction shows — not to mention the fact that the Star Trek franchise is currently thriving on television, with Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds enjoying multi-season runs, the animated Star Trek: Prodigy releasing its second season later this year, and Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy, the newest sequel, revealing its filming window and episode count. But despite Trek's major pedigree, the original series ended up being canceled after three seasons, and Roddenberry's follow-up series, Earth: Final Conflict, wasn't produced until after his death.

Malin Akerman, known for her roles in romantic comedies, stars in The Christmas Classic, making her the perfect choice for the film. The film follows Elizabeth Bird as she navigates love, family, and an important decision during the holidays in a small town. Malin Akerman is back home for the holidays in the fist trailer for upcoming Christmas rom-com The Christmas Classic, coming to theaters on November 3rd by Quiver Distribution. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the preferred spinoff show of legendary Star Trek writer D.C. Fontana, who found the show's darker themes more appealing than Star Trek: The Next Generation's. Fontana had a negative experience working on Star Trek: The Next Generation and left the show due to the behavior of Gene Roddenberry's lawyer, Leonard Maizlish, as well as Roddenberry's habit of rewriting scripts. After her one and only DS9 episode, Fontana went on to write for Babylon 5, several Star Trek video games, and Earth: Final Conflict, but did not return for Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda.
A legendary figure behind Star Trek: The Original Series picked Star Trek: Deep Space Nine over Gene Roddenberry's The Next Generation as their preferred spinoff show for several reasons. DS9 was the last Star Trek series that Gene Roddenberry was involved in before his death in 1991. However, given the writer's ailing health,...

Andromeda, created by Gene Roddenberry, shares connections with Star Trek, including executive producer Majel Barrett, but the two series never crossed over. Andromeda was originally conceived by Roddenberry decades before it aired, and it was a successor to his other posthumous project, Earth: Final Conflict. While Andromeda and Star Trek differ in setting, time period, and societal structure, there are some intriguing similarities, such as the introduction of space travel by Vulcan and Verdran species.
Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda has a handful of connections to the Star Trek franchise beyond their shared creator. Starring former Hercules: The Legendary Journeys star Kevin Sorbo, the series aired between 2000 and 2005 on the Global Television Network in Canada and in broadcast syndication in the US. Andromeda was, therefore, airing concurrently with Star Trek: Enterprise but they never crossed over with each other. This is because Andromeda was never produced as a Star Trek show, despite...

Voice actor David Hemblen, known to longtime Marvel fans as the voice of Magneto on X-Men: The Animated Series, has sadly passed away. While the cause of death isn't clear, the actor's obituary states that he died earlier this month on Nov. 16. He was 79 years old. The X-Men: The Animated Series Twitter account, maintained by writers Julia Lewald and Eric Lewald, have also addressed Hemblen's passing with a post online.
"This horrible, heart-breaking year continues... Our #Magneto," the post reads.
David Hemblen was born on Sept. 16, 1941, in London, England. He'd grow up in Toronto, Canada, taking an early interest in theatre and performing. While attending college, Hemblen took to the stage and began working consistently as an actor, starting in the 1960s. He'd go on to appear in several dozen stage productions at major Canadian theatres, at one point earning a Dora nomination for Best Leading Actor for his role as Dr.

The film, directed by Edward af Sillén, also stars Jonas Karlsson, with music by Tomas Ledin. “Piece” is about Isabella, a hot shot within the Stockholm finance world who returns to her hometown. She feels like a winner compared to her old classmates, being the only one who actually made something of herself.

Along with today's news that Justin Lin is in talks to direct two episodes of HBO's True Detective, Variety reports that Rachel McAdams is vying for the female lead role alongside Elisabeth Moss.
While this is the first we're hearing about Rachel McAdams being in contention, Elisabeth Moss revealed last month that she had not been approached to star in the series, just days after a report revealed she was up for the female lead. However, a lot can change in one month, and it seems now that Elisabeth Moss is, in fact, in the running.
The role in question is, according to a July report, a sheriff from Montery, California who has a troubled past. Jessica Chastain was previously sought for the role in May, but she turned it down.
Variety also reports that Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn are currently in final negotiations for the other three lead roles.

The X-Men movies are important. They make a lot of money and they helped create Superhero-Era Hollywood and they incepted a certain kind of lucrative career arc in the heads of a generation of young actors. (Do the franchise, take the money, spend a year on greenscreens and the press circuit pretending you understand anything that’s happening, try for the Oscar, repeat.)
And the X-Men movies are important to me. I grew up loving superhero comic books and I grew up loving movies. These two fascinations were not mutually exclusive; but now, more and more, they feel diametrically opposed.

There are plenty of rewatch podcasts of great TV series available in the vastness of the internet, but this new one has some particularly interesting names and numbers involved. It’s about Star Trek, so our pointy ears are already perked up. It’s from Roddenberry Entertainment, with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry‘s son Rod Roddenberry executive producing, so it has an extra-authentic pedigree. It’s through Nerdist Industries, now a part of Legendary Entertainment, so the production (and nerdy) values are great.
But the best part of all is that it will be a weekly examination of Every Star Trek episode from Every Star Trek series, one by one. Six series, 30 seasons, 726 episodes. They’ve just started, so it’s only two episodes in so far – ”The Cage” and “The Man Trap” – making it easy for you to catch up. Here are the details:

Fans will be asked to continue a tradition that is now 13 years old when voting for the 2012 Airlock Alpha Portal Awards begins June 25. The awards themselves started in 1999 as the SyFy World Genre Awards. At the time, SyFy World, still living in its home in the now defunct GeoCities, was just starting to gain a small following, thanks to its spoiler reporting on shows like "Earth: Final Conflict," "Star Trek: Voyager," and the final episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." There wasn't a lot of science-fiction on television and in the movies at the time, but the audience was there, and the fact is, there was no other way for genre fans to express their love for their favorite shows and movies. The Genre Awards were an instant hit, so much that it has continued through name changes ...

It's an award that can only be won once, and is voted on each year by the fans. It was first included as part of the Portal Awards in 2010, and will be a part of the more than dozen categories ...

On May 12, 2000, I paid $7 for a movie ticket and sat down with a few hundred other people to watch this new John Travolta movie that had come out. The opening credits of "Battlefield Earth" -- a film that forced "Earth: Final Conflict" to have changed its name a couple years earlier -- rolled, and for some reason I thought this was going to be pretty cool. Five minutes in ... I realized how wrong I was. Sadly, my friends who were with me didn't want to leave, so I did what I always do when I get bored: I entertain myself. That meant openly making fun of the film, so much that the audience was more interested in my heckling than they were of the film itself. In fact, that Tampa theater was probably the only one in America that didn't have the whole audience walk out before the ending ...

There's a contingent of moviegoers out there that absolutely loved the claustrophobic, mind-bending sci-fi movie Cube (1997) and have been waiting for its writer-director, Canadian filmmaker Vincenzo Natali, to really come into his own -- and to do something with a budget befitting his talent and imagination. He directed the little-seen features Cypher (2002) and Nothing (2003), the documentary Getting Gilliam (2005), about Terry Gilliam, and even three episodes of the sci-fi series Earth: Final Conflict (TV). But now, finally, there is Splice (2010), the film that may make him a force to be reckoned with, the film that may make Hollywood come calling for real. Splice centers on a romantically involved couple of scientists, Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley), who are at the forefront of genetic engineering. They've created hybrids, animal hybrids that can be used -- by the pharmaceutical company that bankrolls their efforts -- to develop life-saving, not to mention profitable,...

When the producers announced they were working on yet another spinoff of the Stargate franchise, all I could do was sigh. "Stargate Sg-1" was fun enough, except it went two seasons too many. "Stargate: Atlantis" had a wonderful start, but there seemed to be far better job stability on "Earth: Final Conflict," and it simply wasn't worth an effort to invest in many of the characters there. So "Stargate: Universe" ... what areas of the franchise hasn't already been covered in the last 15 years worth of Stargate episodes? Well, Brad Wright, Robert C. Cooper and Carl Binder show us in the first seconds of the new series. The stargate is fired up, and instead of watching someone casually walk through the puddle, we instead see someone shoot through it as if they were just shot from a circus ...

Despite their dramatic potential, ecological importance and scientific interest, swamps rarely get the good press that crystal-clear lakes, misty mountains and sun-drenched beaches do. This may be partly because so much superstition has grown up around them. Swamp monsters are popular expressions of this superstition, embodying the impression that swamps are muddy, bug-infested slime pits.
Perhaps the most famous such monster in the annals of film is the comic book character Swamp Thing. This tangle of humanoid swamp vegetation first appeared in DC Comics' House of Secrets #92 (1971) and he was later revamped for his own title. In the 1980s the comic was adapted for the film Swamp Thing. The character has also appeared in that film's sequel, The Return of Swamp Thing, and animated and live-action television series.
Contemporary with the origination of Swamp Thing was the first appearance of Marvel Comic's Man-Thing. Swamp Thing and Man-Thing had similar origin...

There was a time when filming in Canada meant filming in Toronto. Over the years, the city became a backdrop for many places, both on Earth and other planets in shows like "Earth: Final Conflict" and "Wonderfalls" among others. But in recent years, a lot of television production has moved across the country to Vancouver, British Columbia, and Toronto has been trying to catch up ever since. But now the city has a chance, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Bob Hall, president of one of Canada's more powerful unions, The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes, or Iatse, is pushing for the Toronto Films Studios complex to be reopened so that productions for movies and television alike will have a place to film. "We cannot allow our production center to continue to erode," ...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed The Curious Case of Benjamin Button I posted my review of the Blu-ray edition yesterday giving Benjamin Button another glowing critique. So, it shouldn't come as any surprise I am leading with it this week and recommend it as a film you should at least watch, since I am willing to admit this isn't a movie everyone will love. However, I do believe this is a film everyone should revisit every few years if they don't like it as I think it is a film that only gets better with age... Dexter - The Complete Second Season Paramount sent this one over and I have also recently taken a look at the first season of the original "Star Trek" on Blu-ray and just a couple nights ago finished watching the first season of "C.S.I." on Blu-ray. I covered the...

The first up will be the sci-fi thriller Paradox, which will star Kevin Sorbo and be directed by Brenton Spencer, of TV shows like "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Earth: Final Conflict" previously. Sorbo will play a homicide cop on a parallel Earth ruled by magic who investigates a series of murders committed by previously unseen means - the power of science. Arcana Studios is developing a feature version of the comic book series Paradox, report the trades. Christos Gage, who wrote the Arcana Comics three-issue limited series, penned the script with Ruth Fletcher. Kevin Sorbo is attached to star and Brenton Spencer will direct. Spencer is a veteran television director, having helmed episodes for Stargate: Atlantis, Earth: Final Conflict, Andromeda and The Outer Limits. Paradox centers on homicide detective Sean Nault (Sorbo), a cop on a parallel Earth whose technology is powered exclusively by magic. Sean investigates a baffling series of murders committed by a means he’s never seen before: the power of science. With the aid of Lenoir – a member of the ridiculed subculture of “pragmatists” who believe science is more than the stuff of myths and children’s stories – and the 130 year old sorcerer Winston Churchill, Sean uncovers an apocalyptic plot that will lead him to another dimension – ours – and the realization that,...

In 1999, I had a chance to interview Majel Barrett Roddenberry. It was a big move for me. SyFy Portal then was still a very small, fledgling site known as SyFy World, and the interview was actually not even part of this site, but instead, something to be featured in an online newsletter I ran with Brian Meskimen known as the Earth: Final Conflict Galactic Newsletter. I was so nervous as I dialed the number her assistant had given me. She was expecting my call first thing in the morning on the east coast, so it had to be before sunrise out in California. I expected that I would be calling the assistant directly, and she would connect me with Majel, but instead, Majel herself answered the phone. She didn't seem to know who I was at first, and apparently had been out in the garden in something ...

It was only days ago that an announcement was made that Majel Roddenberry, widow of Gene, who of course created Star Trek would provide the voice for the computers on the Enterprise in the new movie. And just now comes news that she died today.
She was 76 and died at home of leukemia with her son Eugene at her side.
Mrs. Roddenberry is best know for playing nurse Christine Chapel on the original Star Trek series. In addition to that role she played the voice of the computer on every Star Trek series as well as playing Lwaxana Troi on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
