Although not many of us remember Batman & Robin as being one of the better entries in the film franchise, a bright spot, in my view, was that of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze. Okay, I admit he wouldn’t have been on my shortlist to portray the character, but the ice puns that populated his goofy dialogue were about the only things in that movie capable of making me smile.
As it so happens, the entry that put the Batman line of films on ice for eight years is now celebrating its 20th anniversary and, not surprisingly, various interesting factoids are coming to light. In addition to recently learning that Joel Schumacher dreamed of directing a flick centered on Arkham Asylum, Arnie’s paycheck has also now been spoken of publicly, and from the sounds of it, he made a killing.
Knowing what a huge star Schwarzenegger was at the time of production, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that he was paid handsomely. Unfortunately, they didn’t pay him in diamonds that could power his mechanical suit, but he did make off with a cool $25 million. In other words, $1 million per day on set.
Producer Peter MacGregor-Scott certainly wasn’t shy when discussing the matter with The Hollywood Reporter:
“The cast ate the money up. It’s tough when you wake up in the morning and just spent $25 million! Oh dear. But he was great.”
Another interesting tidbit to surface is that of rewrites occurring, effectively changing Mr. Freeze from being a thespian’s dream to someone with a penchant for puns. At least, that’s according to storyboard artist Tim Burgard:
“All the dialogue was for Mr. Freeze, you could tell it was meant for somebody who would deliver it in a Shakespearean fashion. It was hysterical; in my head, I was reading Freeze’s dialogue as Schwarzenegger.”
For much more on Batman & Robin, be sure to check out our extensive retrospective.

During the final night of PaleyFest La, the always intense “American Horror Story” fanbase zeroed in on fan favorite Sarah Paulson, to the point that Kathy Bates took great pleasure in dubbing Paulson “the People’s Princess.” It was all in good fun, though, as the cast goofily bantered back and forth — and, in the case of Cuba Gooding Jr., twerked.

Unfortunately, executive producers Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear spent the night relatively secretive about the upcoming Season 7 of American Horror Story — all we know, so far, is that Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will definitely be returning as leads, and that the season would have something to do with the 2016 election. Falchuk did say, though, that any fan of the series should “set your TiVo.” ‘

Here at The A.V. Club, we’re pretty big on the movies director Edgar Wright has made with star and co-writer Simon Pegg—so much so that all three of them appear on our list of the best film comedies since 2000. And many of our readers might know that the duo first attracted attention with Spaced, the cult single-camera sitcom they created with Jessica Hynes (née Stevenson), which ran for two series (or seasons, as we call them in the Western hemisphere) on the U.K.’s Channel 4 around the turn of the century.
But Spaced wasn’t their first collaboration. That distinction belongs to Asylum, an obscure low-budget series that aired in 1996 on a fledging satellite channel that would eventually become the British affiliate of Comedy Central. Asylum, which was never seen any kind of home video or digital release, is notable for the sheer ...

WaterTower Music has released a first track from the score to director David Ayer’s highly anticipated Suicide Squad, featuring the music of Academy Award-Winning composer Steven Price.
Price was tasked with navigating musically the colorful storyline of an assembled team of the world’s most dangerous Super-Villains and the emotional highs and lows they experience on an impossible mission.
“David’s film invited me to find a way to bring all of these incredible misfit outsiders together as a united force, with a thematic score that goes from moments of quiet emotion to huge action sequences,” explains Price. “The character’s themes interact and develop as the film progresses, and we witness the birth of the Suicide Squad. The score was a huge challenge, but a fantastic amount of fun to write!”

American Horror Story is finally living up to the horror in its title once again with the bloody and uber-stylish Hotel...
This review contains spoilers.
5.2 Chutes And Ladders
If you just looked at the name of this show, you'd expect something, well, horrifying. Murder House definitely had its moments, and Asylum might have been the most unsettling series of the show, but American Horror Story hasn't been particularly horrifying the last few seasons. Sure, they both had their moments—the Freaks recreation from last season, Twisty's whole everything, some of Dandy's moments, the rape Minotaur... but lately, the gore and grotesquerie has been as comical as it has been horrifying. The zombie chainsaw attack from Coven, anyone?
We're only two episodes into American Horror Story: Hotel, but it already seems like the show is going to aim more to be horrifying than horribly campy. Not that it's not campy,...

Social Media is the bane of most directors' existence nowadays. Unless they are using it themselves to help sell their product. Case in point, Suicide Squad. Director David Ayer has used his Twitter account to post behind-the-scenes teases, and he even revealed his entire cast in costume. But he's in control. When someone else leaks out a bit of information, that's a whole different story. And actress Corina Calderon is probably getting an earful this morning, as she finally revealed one of the characters in the movie who, up until this point, had not been announced.
Fans have long speculated who Jim Parrack is playing in Suicide Squad. Now, thanks to Corina Calderon, we know! He will play The Joker's Henchman Jonny Frost. The character was created specifically for the 2008 graphic novel simply titled 'Joker'. The book was written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Lee Bermejo. This may not...

Chances are you’ve stumbled across Silent Night, Deadly Night, Black Christmas, or Santa’s Slay. Everybody knows Batman Returns and Die Hard take place around December 25th. However, did you know that several disasters have occurred around the most wonderful time of the year?

Disaster-oriented Christmas movies were becoming an annual tradition up until 2013. The two media giants banned together for three straight years to bring us a trilogy of B-movie entertainment that I think it’s high time they continue.

In a development that feels more inevitable than surprising, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are in talks to get back into the Bourne business. The two had sent mixed messages over the years, ever since Jason Bourne disappeared in the murky East River at the end of The Bourne Ultimatum in 2007, with the major roadblock being Damon’s insistence that a reluctant Greenglass direct, while Universal handed the franchise over to writer-turned-director Tony Gilroy. But with Gilroy’s Bourne Legacy, starring Jeremy Renner, failing to live up to the original three Bourne films at the box office, and Damon’s recent non-Bourne projects,...

If a step-by-step guide were written for how to create a standard zombie narrative, it would be titled "Z Nation." Start with one part outbreak footage, and mix in some overlapping audio clips of news regarding said outbreak.
Simmer it in a stock of basic characters with one part brown-haired stubbly leader, one part love interest, two parts mysterious drifters with unexplained combat prowess, and three parts uninteresting zombie chow to beef up the cast.
Marinade in a standard post-apocalyptic world, equal parts towns trying to make it and traveling caravans with dubious intent. Bake for 45 minutes in standard character dilemmas, adding in a mission to cure the virus for some longevity. Garnish with dialogue.
I try not to be too critical of things for being standard. I can’t expect everyone watching something to have the same breadth of exposure as I do, and in my experience there’s...

By Phil Ford and Steven Moffat
Directed by Ben Wheatley
Human rebel fighter Journey Blue is about to have her ship destroyed by a Dalek saucer when The Doctor saves her by materializing the ship around her, a move for which he expects and demands a thank you. Returning her back to her command ship, he’s quickly arrested, until Journey tells them he’s a Doctor…which is lucky because they have a patient. The patient is a Dalek, who is malfunctioning. As in, it has become good – it is raving that the Daleks must be defeated.

There’s a rumor going around that Warner Bros. doesn’t want you laughing when you watch Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice in March 2016, or any of their DC Comics movies for that matter.
According to HitFix’s Drew McWeeney, and a few other writers around the web, the studio implemented a rule that's to set the tone for all of their superhero movies: “No Jokes.” (What?!)
In an in-depth (and very enlightening) article, McWeeney suggests that Warner Bros. wants Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and so on to be taken super seriously. While no one linked to the productions have admitted any of this, anyone who's seen Man of Steel can surely say that it's not much of a comedy. And this isn't exactly Warner Bros. fault because as McWeeney writes, "DC treats their superhero characters more like gods," whereas Marvel, the opposition, has characters that are more human-like and flawed.

"All games must end." I suppose that's true. A trailer has debuted for an Edgar Allan Poe-inspired film called Stonehearst Asylum, originally known as Eliza Graves, referring to a character played by Kate Beckinsale. The film is being readied for release this October and to show you what it's all about they've debuted this trailer, which delves deep into a psychological mystery set at the creepy Stonehearst Asylum. The cast includes Michael Caine, Jim Sturgess, Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Jason Flemyng and Sinéad Cusack. Despite some solid names, this looks a bit too much like Shutter Island, even though I like the Poe connection. I can't really tell if it will be any good. Check it out yourself. Here's the first official trailer for Brad Anderson's Stonehearst Asylum, originally from Yahoo: Beckinsale, Sturgess, Gleeson, Kingsley and Caine all star in this thriller loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe's short story,...

Time to play the name game, kids, though it will not be nearly as entertaining as it was during "American Horror Story: Asylum." Eliza Graves has gotten itself a new title, Stoneheart Asylum. Look for it via Millennium Films on October 24th.

We didn't know much about "American Horror Story: Coven" ... until now.
Four of the FX drama's leading ladies -- Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates -- took the stage along with "American Horror Story: Coven" executive producer Tim Minear to reveal some Season 3 details, even though they're only two days into filming.
Paulson announced she'll be playing Cordelia, the daughter of Lange's character Fiona. "Isn't that a nugget? Chew on that for a while. That's tasty," Paulson joked. Later, Minear pointed out that Paulson's character is named after one of King Lear's daughters, not Charisma Carpenter's character on "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer."
Lange also revealed that the show moves "back and forth in time so it encompasses a lot of different stories," and that Fiona will be a witch. Minear noted that not all of the "American Horror Story: Coven" characters will be witches,...

A lot of filmmakers wear their influences on their sleeve, but perhaps they aren’t nearly as overt as Edgar Wright. The man was brought up on a bevy of different films, from horror to action and all in between, and references to everything and anything can be found in his films. After all, a man doesn’t name his big debut (not counting a Fistful of Fingers) after one of the definitive horror movies of all time without having some sort of knowledge of filmic history. But Wright – often with his friend and co-writer Simon Pegg – doesn’t just know like you or I, his knowledge is encyclopaedic, and only matched by his ability to sneak this knowledge into his films.
There’s a reason why filmmakers of a generation before – chief among them Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez – are impressed with Wright’s work. Much like those auteurs before him,...

What's not to love? The awful production values, the silly one-liners, and the great mockery of it all on the internet
Sharknado, pundemic on Twitter, has restored the B-movie back to its rightful place in American life: cult summer blockbuster and universal inside joke. To join in you don't need a TV or even to have seen the movie. You only must appreciate absurdity (and tolerate portmanteaus:

In case the title left anything to doubt, a quick summary of the film: a tornado spews sharks into Los Angeles. One lands in Tara Reid's pool, another bounces off a barstool. Helicopters throw bombs at the weather. The director's new film completes his trilogy of wistful pub-based comedies. Nostalgia is a bitter-sweet brew, he tells Alex Godfrey
When Edgar Wright was 19, he and his friends went on a pub crawl in his hometown, Wells in Somerset. "Out of 13 pubs, I managed to get through six before getting completely, wildly drunk," he laughs. "I then spent the rest of the night trying to find this girl I was going out with, forgetting she was out of town. I ran through somebody's garden into a clothesline and knocked myself out. I got a very thin purple bruise."
A couple of years later he wrote and directed his first film, A Fistful Of Fingers (tagline: The Greatest Western Ever Made … In Somerset), and followed it up with a script about his teenage pub crawl, "a big quest movie," he says. "There's a big noble sinking of the final pint followed...

With the announcement of the upcoming Damian: Son of Batman and Sinestro Corps series, DC has (for the time being) decided to stop making new series that don’t involve Batman, Green Lantern, or Superman. This is a shame because they experimented and are still experimenting with books in different genres, like war (G.I. Combat), western (All Star Western), fantasy (Sword of Sorcery), and sci-fi (Threshold). However, these books are usually the ones that get cancelled. Many of the Bat-books (Batman, Batgirl, Batwoman) are solid reads, but does there need to be thirteen of them? Here are characters at DC that should get their own ongoing series.
Booster Gold
Unlike some of the other characters on this list, Booster Gold has made several appearances in the New 52. He acted as the leader of the Justice League International and more recently teamed up with Jonah Hex in 19th century Gotham in All-Star Western.

With great success comes great compromise. Capcom popularized a genre with Resident Evil, and its sequels made many a merry gamer with their idiosyncratically garnished blend of what Simon Pegg’s Tim Bisley best described as “a subtle blend of lateral thinking and extreme violence.” As time wore on, though, Capcom began to worry that their formula would soon begin to wane and tweaked the ratio, upping the action at the expense of the horror upon which their series of zombie-starring games was founded.
This, of course, led to Resident Evil 4, unquestionably 2005’s game of the year, though subsequent efforts have leaned more and more towards the general market with an abundance of gunplay and the lifting of mechanics from considerably more popular franchises. It saddens me to say that Resident Evil’s just not my baby any more. It belongs to everyone, now. Imagine, then, if you will, my...

There’s a plethora of “reality” shows on the tube and some fit into the niche of what I call “redneck reality” – shows like “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” “Redneck Vacation,” “Alligator Wrestlers” and so on. There’s also a niche of “supernatural reality” shows such as Ghost Hunters, Finding Bigfoot, and other “investigative” shows. Of course there is also fictional horror shows that are real big like “The Walking Dead” and “American Asylum.” At least, these are shows that intend to be fictional.
I’m not loathe to hop on a bandwagon and I love combining genres or niches so I’ve come up with an idea for a supernatural redneck reality show I’m calling “Zombie Wranglers”.
Cue theme music and opening credits: Zombie Wranglers with Joe Bob Diggs, Ellie Mae Clampett and Simon Pegg.
Narrator: Zombie encounters depicted in this show are handled by self-proclaimed experts in the field.

We live in an era of more is more, from books to television to movies, the general consensus seems to be that, when it comes to the horror genre, showing viewers everything is the way to go. If it doesn’t shock, it isn’t scary, and the best way to scare is through the magic of special effects. Graphic is the name of the game and nobody seems to care if the audience ends up losing their popcorn halfway through the show.
I actually like quite a bit in the horror genre. A good scare, especially during certain times of the year, makes me inordinately happy. For the most part, while I may jump during core scenes in a given movie or TV show, it’s rare that the unsettling feeling lasts past the end of the viewing. Scares that stick with me are getting rarer and rarer. The...

From The Master to Holy Motors, this autumn promises to be a strong season for director-led cinema. But who are the auteurs that are exciting us in 2012?
1 - Paul Thomas Anderson
Though he's released only five films over a 16-year career, Paul Thomas Anderson has risen from promising young whiz-kid to Hollywood royalty with barely a bump along the way. As the scope of his work has tightened – from the sprawling ensembles of Boogie Nights and Magnolia through the intimate duologue of Punch-Drunk Love to the all-consuming solipsism of There Will Be Blood – so his dedication to his craft has intensified, with his disdain for PR and celebrity marking him out as the most devout film-maker of his generation (as well as the owner of one of Wikipedia's most glitz-free "personal life" sections). His upcoming film The Master, a controversial look at the birth of a cult not entirely dissimilar to the Church of Scientology,...

The villains for the sequel will be Scarecrow, Two Face and Zsasz. It will be based on Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, The Long Halloween, The Three Ghosts of Batman and Batman: Haunted Knight. The cast for this reboot (just for Wayne, I'll do the additions for Arkham and the third when I release their scripts) are: Batman/Bruce Wayne: Liam McIntyre Alfred Pennyworth: Christopher Lee Jim Gordon: Kiefer Sutherland Julie Madison: Amy Acker Roman Sionis/Black Mask: Dominic West Lazlo Valenin/Professor Pyg: Philip Seymour Hoffman Arthur Wynne: Andrew Scott Salvatore Maroni: James Wood Harvey Dent: Michael Fassbender Lucius Fox: Denzel Washington Sarah Essen-Gordon: Mariska Hargitay Barbara Gordon: Ellen Page...

Richard Speck: one of America’s most notorious mass murderers, a man who tortured, raped, and murdered eight Chicago nurses one night in 1966, died in prison in 1991.
As evidenced by the trailer for the new found footage flick 100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck, he's not too fond of camera crews either.
Synopsis:
In 2010 paranormal investigators tried to film Richard Speck’s ghost at the site of his heinous killing spree. The victims’ families have finally released the footage that documents their last days.
100 Ghost Street: The Return of Richard Speck is the newest found footage flick from The Asylum based on the exploits of a real-life serial killer, following in the footsteps of 8213: Gacy House. The cast and crew are listed as "N/A" because, as is always the case with these Asylum found footage movies, they are 100% authentic.

Last year, Warner Premiere released an animated adaptation of Frank Miller's popular graphic novel, Batman: Year One. However, the popularity of that book pales in comparison to one of the most influential comics of all-time, The Dark Knight Returns. Along with Watchmen, Returns was a major deconstruction of the superhero genre, and pushed it into a more violent and gritty direction. Miller's take on the Batman universe showed Dark Knight as more of a fascist than a hero (you can skip Miller's atrocious sequel series, The Dark Knight Strikes Again). Although Christopher Nolan has eschewed a comic-book tone with his Batman movies, he has retained the themes of Miller's 1986 comic. Today, THR reports that Wp is moving forward with an animated adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns, and that they will split the feature into two-parts. Hit the jump for more including the film's voice cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter,...

Having never been in a high security mental institution I can only imagine what the interaction between cook and patient really is. I keep thinking of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest… Nurse Ratchet. McMurphy. Chief. It would seem to me it’s a rather humorous place to be if you just take the Ken Kesey angle (until Billy kills himself… then it’s no fun for anyone). Maybe the institution of Asylum Blackout is more like Arkham Asylum from the world of Batman. Dark. Demented. The patients ready to get out and exact revenge, insanely, on a staff that cared too little. Mostly I think of the thorazine shuffle. I think of heavily medicated folks drooling on themselves meandering about their padded cell. With that in mind, when I tell you that Asylum Blackout didn’t quite do it for me, it’s not for the lack of...
