Back in the early days of the broadcast networks, natural history shows were a part of the programming diet: NBC ran “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” for much of the 1960s, and around that time ABC brought “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau” to U.S. audiences. Over the past several decades, however, those kinds of programs mostly became the domain of PBS (“Nature”) and cablers like Discovery (“Planet Earth”). More recently, streamers like Netflix (“Our Planet”) entered the space.
With a few exceptions (Fox’s “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey”), the broadcast nets have shied away from documentary-style nature events — which makes NBC’s current stab at one, “The Americas,” all the more notable. “It is an experiment,” says Toby Gorman, the president of Universal Television Alternative Studio. “We will learn a lot. But when I think about the hits of broadcast, it’s got to be four quadrant,” he adds,...

Gene Hackman angrily bolted out of his chair and came at me. I swear he wanted to throw a punch.
This was Puerto Rico in 2000, during rehearsals for Under Suspicion, which my good buddy Stephen Hopkins was prepping to direct with stars Gene, Morgan Freeman, Monica Bellucci and Thomas Jane.
Those weeks of private rehearsals remain one of the greatest pleasures in my long career. Stephen, Gene, Morgan and I spent our days on an upper floor of a San Juan hotel, closed from recent hurricane damage, in a space the production built out to be identical to the actual set we would later use. It was mostly just the four of us every day for three weeks.
Stephen later told me, “If only I could have stopped you” from saying what I said to Gene. This screenplay was very much like a stage play. Stephen had sat with me...

From British private school outcast to anaconda-wrestling cowboy to philanthropist, Paul Michael Angell’s documentary is of a life less ordinary
As unbelievable life trajectories go, British private school outcast to South American cowboy to US primetime TV naturalist to American healthcare saviour must be up there with the weirder ones. The late philanthropist Stan Brock singlehandedly disproves the old F Scott Fitzgerald dictate about American second acts by – starting in 1985 – supplying free medical treatment to millions of uninsured people through his non-profit Remote Area Medical (Ram). Related in this documentary with flashes of Boy’s Own brio, this flip into altruism is all the more remarkable in light of Brock’s borderline-abusive upbringing that pushed him as a young man into a stony self-reliance.
Even in his 70s and ushering in-need citizens into Ram’s mobile clinics, Brock still cuts a strapping, athletic figure. In his heyday, droving on...

Legendary wildlife host Jack “Jungle Jack” Hanna’s TV franchise library, including 400 episodes of “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild” and “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown” has been acquired by Hearst Media Production Group.
Hearst is the longtime distributor of Hanna’s series, previously owned by Into The Wild, LLC, and already held ownership of “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures” and in 2021 launched the Jack Hanna Channel, a Fast channel showcasing hundreds of episodes of Hanna’s adventures in the wild.
Financial terms of the deal to acquire the libraries for “Into the Wild” and “Wild Countdown” were not disclosed.
Nominated for 15 Emmys and winning five, Hanna’s decades-long career in wildlife programming spurred from his background as a conservationist and his position at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio. Like many of his generation, Dan Cogan, the producer of “Becoming Cousteau,” vividly remembers when he first became familiar with the French filmmaker. “I was seven-years-old and sitting on the floor in front of my television and being wowed when I shown his ‘World of Sharks’ and ‘The Story of the Whales.’ Every Sunday night was ‘Wild Kingdom’ and Jacques Cousteau,” Cogan tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Film Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). The thought that many might not know who Jacques Cousteau was served as a catalyst for making this film. “It was just shocking to me when I realized that that incredible legacy was disappearing. That’s what began a six year journey to make this film…and to see if we could bring Cousteau back into the cultural conversation of this important moment.”

Jacques Cousteau was an adventurer, filmmaker, inventor, author, unlikely celebrity and conservationist. But for National Geographic’s “Becoming Cousteau,” director Liz Garbus focused on his legacy as an explorer.
Garbus chronicled the highs and lows of Cousteau’s life as an adventurer who was a dedicated conservationist and was highlighting climate change half a century ago.
To tell this story, Garbus partnered with editor Pax Wasserman to comb through Cousteau’s archival footage, and rather than use talking heads, Garbus and Wasserman let the explorer narrate this timely documentary.
Garbus and Wassterman spoke to Variety about their collaboration.

Liz Garbus: He certainly was on in the U.K. I think in some ways, that’s exactly why we made this film. For me, and I think people who...

Months into an expedition through the Amazon in the early ’90s, the Kratt Brothers — as Chris and Martin Kratt are known — were on the lookout for giant river otters, German shepherd-sized animals also known as “lobos de rio,” or “wolves of the river.” A sudden snorting sound had tipped them off to the presence of the endangered predators feisty enough to chase off jaguars, so they hopped into their little boat, video camera in hand.
“We were so into it, and they were just right there,” recounts Martin. “We were getting great stuff. Then suddenly, Chris and I realized our feet were getting wet. We were so excited [that we didn’t realize] we were both on the same side of the pontoon boat … and we were already going down.”
They scrambled to protect their video equipment in a waterproof bag as the boat plunged into the river, where the brothers soon found themselves face-to-face with several giant otters.

On Monday, July 26, famed rock producer, manager, and lyricist Sandy Pearlman died at the age of 72. His Wikipedia page says he "was the recipient of 17 gold and platinum records." He managed that despite not actually producing many bands, or even albums -- but he left a big imprint on every one he worked on.
Born in Rockaway (Queens), NY in 1943, he got a college degree at the State University of New York at Stony Brook on Long Island in 1966.
A year later, still in the Stony Brook area, he recruited a band so he could have a series of science-fiction poems he'd written (the Imaginos saga, about a group secretly controlling world history) set to music and performed. He named the band Soft White Underbelly after Winston Churchill's epithet for Italy, but changed its name to Oaxaca after Soft White Underbelly got a negative review at a big concert.

Snoop Dogg loves nature - especially when it’s smokable or edible. But it turns out the Doggfather’s love for the great outdoors extends well beyond cannabis, and he’s brought it to YouTube. The legendary rapper behind such hits as “Gin and Juice” and “Who am I?” has launched a video series called Planet Snoop on his Merry Jane channel. It was no doubt inspired by his "Plizzanet Earth" sketches on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and furthered by an online petition encouraging Snoop to make the show. To date, it’s gathered more than 65,000 signatures. In the first episode, Snoop offers commentary as a squirrel and a snake battle for supremacy. The profanity-laced play-by-play is delivered in a style only he can provide. Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, it’s not. It’s better.

In the rundown of “Wait! What?!” questions raised by the premiere episode of CBS’ new summer thriller, Zoo, “Why are lions waging an organized war against humans?” barely cracks the Top 5.
For starters, after seeing his best friend seemingly mauled to death by a lion in the back of a van, how come handsome safari guide Jackson Oz (The Crazy Ones‘ James Wolk) isn’t a blubbering, wild-eyed mess, but instead apologizing for the quality of the coffee he’s serving to a pretty/traumatized Frenchwoman?

Like those old episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom where the straggler impala gets picked off by the hungry lioness, The Voice‘s Battle Rounds are compelling (though not necessarily comforting) viewing.
Only the strongest voices — or at least those attached to the youngest, doe-eyed-iest, most social-media-approved bodies — survive the two-person, one-song contests.
And while I understand those who wince at the inherent cruelty of whittling a pool of 48 singers down to 32 (eight Battle “losers” get second chances via The Steal), it’s nevertheless a necessary evil. I mean, let’s be honest: After three consecutive weeks of Blind Auditions,...

Adjust your documentary-watching gauge closer to “Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom” (or, for the kids, Animal Planet) and further away from “Werner Herzog discovers one of the last unspoiled places left on earth,” and you'll have a perfectly enjoyable time watching “Deepsea Challenge 3D,” the kind of no-nonsense, by-the-numbers doc that captures a rather extraordinary feat: film director James Cameron and his team submerging a vessel (sole passenger: the director of “Titanic”) miles downward into the Mariana Trench. It's the kind of film that should be screened in schools as a reminder that math and science are important, and that.

Although Sunday’s episode of True Blood is titled “Dead Meat,” none of our regulars actually perish. (Not even Arlene, whose hangover from last week’s bender I could’ve imagined being lethal.) It wouldn’t be an episode of True Blood if there wasn’t somebody trying to kill Sookie. So the surprise in this week’s outing, “F— the Pain Away” (“Flap the Pain Away”? Huh?), isn’t that our heroine’s life is in jeopardy but who puts it in jeopardy. Of course, since this is a recap, not a preview, even that surprise probably won’t exactly shock you. But let’s pretend you don’t already know the identity of the fairy’s attacker and run through the hour’s highlights, anyway, shall we?

A woman is going to win Season 12 of American Idol — even if executive producer Nigel Lythgoe is forced to stage a crossover episode with Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, plant a couple of hungry lionesses down in the SwayBot pit and let the male contestants get picked off in violent, carnivorous fashion.

I'll give it to the Log Cabin Republicans, they have been persistent and successful fighting Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and yesterday they scored a victory by having the stay of the judgment blocking enforcement lifted, halting any and all discharges under the policy, unless President Obama appeals.
Should we be counting it as a victory that the National Enquirer is gossiping about gay celebrities just like any other? Because now they're reporting that Lance Bass is marrying Lorenzo Martone with Justin Timberlake as his best man.
The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, disappointing my copy editors immensely, because they know I'll never be able to spell that consistently. It's also bad news for NBC, who owns the TV rights to something they won't be able to air live due to the time difference.

In the least surprising news of the year (and in a year that's already seen the revelation that Schwarzenegger has an illegitimate kid and that Donald Trump doesn't Actually intend to run for president, that's saying something) the Rapture didn't happen yesterday. I don't know anyone who genuinely believed it would happen so no one I know is disappointed or betrayed or anything like that. (Also, is it just me or is it massively presumptuous to believe that you as a person are holy enough to be taken in the Rapture? Wouldn't that count as being overly prideful and disqualify you from being Rapture-worthy? Thoughts for another day.) Now we can all relax until some new cultural zeitgeist grabs our attention. Sunday has been one of those days that I find confusing to refer to, because I consider it the end of the week but calendars and some very wrong people consider it the beginning of a new week. It's certainly not the kind of difference of opinion to fight wars over or anything, but just a sort of mental perception. Are you spending your whole week looking forward to "The Killing" and other Sunday shows, or do you start your week off with them and then spend the rest of the week waiting for a new episode? Then again, since I'm currently unemployed and job hunting it's really just another day in a series of days that I get to wear pajama pants and spend most of my day on the couch in front of my computer. Actually, that sounds less like I'm unemployed and more like I'm a successful blogger.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Legend Of The Mighty Soap Trailer When I was a kid I watched HBO relentlessly. Whenever there wasn't reairings of Fraggle Rock, Braingames, Heartbeeps,...

Sunday night always makes me sad that I can't afford the premium channels because I'd love to be watching either "The Borgias" or "Game of Thrones." I'd probably be able to follow "The Borgias" a little bit better, but "Game of Thrones" looks extremely pretty and people keep talking about it and I just wish I could be one of the cool kids who actually gets to watch it. I mean, yeah, sure, DVDs will be coming out later but that's Forever from now and then I won't have anyone to talk to about it because everyone else will be all "Yeah, way ahead of you." Maybe there should be "book clubs" or something similar for series that have come out on DVD so there's a way people watching them for the first time can have somewhere to talk about the show without having to worry about spoilers, or annoying their friends.

Well, Sunday night TV keeps getting better and better. Tonight we have the premiere of "Game of Thrones" which is based on one of those book series that seems to divide people evenly between those who adore it and those who haven't read a single word. I'm in the second group so that's all I'll say about that and leave the real discussion to those of you who know what you're talking about. "The Killing" is on, which I'm enjoying so far though I have no real theories as to who is guilty. To me, those conversations defeat the point of these shows where the real fun is watching the whole thing unfold rather than turning it into some sort of competitive guessing game. I also find guessing who the killer is makes you less open to new information and hints because you end up just looking for clues that confirm your conclusion.

This column is late tonight, for reasons I'm not at liberty to disclose, but it's a shame because there's actually a lot of good TV on tonight. Although it's bittersweet, because some of it is due to mini series that are ending, and despite there being more good TV on, there's still the usual amount of awful television. But it's much easier to avoid when you've got something that will distract you from that. Anyway, here's your Sunday night TV and apologies for being late in posting it:

While growing up in the late Sixties to early Seventies, one of the favorite television shows in our house was Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with host Marlin Perkins. We loved watching wild animals in their natural habitat along with the challenges faced by Perkins and his field correspondents Jim Fowler and Peter Gros. Similar in nature was the classic film Born Free (1966), which told the story of female lion cub Elsa raised to maturity by a Kenyan game warden. Elsa is re-educated so that she can be released back into the wild. Both Wild Kingdom and Born Free left out the violence experienced in the wild, a pattern followed by IMAX documentary Born to Be Wild.
Directed by David Lickley and narrated by Morgan Freeman, Born to Be Wild focuses on two inspirational women, primatologist Birute Galdikas and elephant expert Daphne Sheldrick, who both work with orphaned animals to...
