Meet the Parents 4 Is Bringing Back Another Og Cast Member (And Fans Should Be Excited)
Image
Another key cast member from Meet the Parents is returning for the new sequel. After appearing in all three previous installments, Owen Wilson has joined the cast of the upcoming untitled fourth movie in the fan-favorite comedy franchise.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Wilson has boarded the untitled Meet the Parents 4, where he will reprise his franchise role as Kevin Rawley, the wealthy ex-fiancé of Pam Byrnes. Wilson is now the fifth franchise alum to join Meet the Parents 4, after Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, and Teri Polo, who are back as Greg Focker, Jack Byrnes, Dina Byrnes, and Pam Byrnes Focker, respectively. Besides the five returning stars, the only other actor attached to the new Meet the Parents at this time is Ariana Grande, who is fresh off getting an Oscar nomination for her performance as Galinda in 2024's Wicked.

Meet the Parents 4 is moving forward and taps John Hamburg to direct
Image
Deadline reports that Meet the Parents 4 is moving forward as John Hamburg has been tapped to serve as director of the sequel. He’s no stranger to the franchise, as he has co-written the previous three installments. He’s penning the script for the new sequel as well.

Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Blythe Danner, and Teri Polo are all expected to return, but plot details are being kept under wraps. The last movie (Little Fockers) was released fifteen years ago, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Stiller’s kids will be the ones bringing their significant others home to meet the parents.

Joy Roach helmed the first two movies, while Paul Weitz took over for Little Fockers. Hamburg made his directorial debut on Safe Men in 1998 and went on to write and direct Along Came Polly, I Love You, Man, Why Him?, and Me Time.

‘Meet The Parents 4’: John Hamburg Comes On As Director For Universal Sequel
Image
Exclusive: Momentum on the next installment in the Meet the Parents franchise is building as sources tell Deadline that John Hamburg is set to direct the fourth film in the Universal series. As Deadline first reported, the original cast that includes Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner are returning to star, with Hamburg, who had co-written the three other Meet the Parents movies, penning this script as well.

Plot details are being kept inside the circle of trust. Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro will produce through Tribeca Productions. Jay Roach will produce through Delirious Media. Ben Stiller and John Lesher will produce through Red Hour Films. Hamburg will produce through Particular Pictures.

The first Meet the Parents grossed more than $330 million at the global box office when it was released in 2000, becoming that year’s seventh highest-grossing film globally. Its sequels Meet the Fockers (2004) and...

‘The Instigators’: Movie Stars Plus Boston, Divided by Gunshots and Laughs
Image
Perhaps you’ve heard that Matt Damon is from the beautiful city of Boston. True story! So are his friends and professional colleagues the Affleck brothers — Casey and the other guy — and they seem to like to going back and filming in their hometown whenever possible. Watch these guys run around Beantown in movies like The Departed and Gone Baby Gone, and you get an inherent sense that they know these streets, they’ve tippled in those taverns, they’ve pissed in those alleyways after hours. Drop these actors in...

Hulk Actor Mark Ruffalo Was Scorned By Studios Before He Joined The Avengers
Image
Mark Ruffalo's film debut came in 1994, when he appeared as a seductive and possibly supernatural super-hunk named Christian who periodically appears to Tracy Wells in the horror sequel "Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance." The producers, likely pleased with his performance also hired Ruffalo to play a brand-new role in "Mirror Mirror III: The Voyeur." In that film, he played a sexy moving truck worker named Joey. Ruffalo did not appear in "Mirror Mirror 4: Reflections."

Despite starring in the "Mirror Mirror" movies, as well as the gore flick "The Dentist," Ruffalo had a pretty varied early career. He appeared in the '60s-set coming-of-age drama "There Goes My Baby" in 1994, the indie comedy "Safe Men" in 1998, and the Oscar Bait biopic "54" that same year. He worked with Ang Lee in 1999's "Ride with the Devil," but exploded into the pop consciousness with his memorable performance in Kenneth Lonergan...

“They Let the Lunatics Run the Asylum”: Robert Downey Jr., Paul Giamatti and the THR Actor Roundtable
Image
There aren’t many places where one might encounter two Avengers, three chameleons and a hot priest. But that’s precisely who gathered in mid-November for THR’s Actor Roundtable at The Georgian Hotel in Santa Monica: Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), Colman Domingo (Rustin) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers). They have among them 14 Emmy nominations (five of which led to wins), six Tony nominations (one victory) and six Oscar nominations, with each still on the hunt for his first statuette. Considering that the last Oscar winners for best actor and supporting actor first appeared on this roundtable, there’s a strong chance the best is yet to come for this starry sextet.

There are a lot of connections at this table, some of which you guys may not realize because they happened so early in your career.

Peter Dinklage Nearly Starred In Another Iconic Christmas Movie Before Elf's Success
Image
Peter Dinklage was originally considered for a role in Bad Santa before starring in Elf. Terry Zwigoff, the director, felt that Dinklage's delivery of the lines in his audition for Bad Santa were "truthful", but not funny. Tony Cox was ultimately cast as Marcus in Bad Santa, one of the roles that opened doors for little person actors to play more well-rounded characters.

Though already one of his earliest breakout American roles, Peter Dinklage was originally eyed for Bad Santa before going on to star in Elf. Both released in 2003, the former centered on an alcoholic thief and his criminal partner posing as a mall Santa and elf in order to conduct a heist at the end of the holiday season, while the latter starred Will Smith as a human who learns he's not actually an elf after being raised in the North Pole by Santa and goes to find his birth father.

Oscar nominee Michael Lerner dead at age 81
Image
Michael Lerner, the character actor known from films like “Godzilla,” “Elf,” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” and who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Barton Fink,” has died, as per a report in Variety. He was 81 years old.

The news was broken by his nephew, actor Sam Lerner, a series regular on “The Goldbergs.” He wrote on his Instagram page that “it’s hard to put into words how brilliant my uncle Michael was, and how influential he was to me. His stories always inspired me and made me fall in love with acting. He was the coolest, most confident, talented guy, and the fact that he was my blood will always make me feel special.” He added, “Rip Michael, enjoy your unlimited Cuban cigars, comfy chairs, and endless movie marathon.”

James Franco Battles Bryan Cranston in Red-Band Why Him? Trailer
James Franco
Of all the guys his daughter could have chosen...Why Him? That's the question the poster for this upcoming comedy asks, which arrives along with the first hilarious trailer for the Holiday release. James Franco goes breaking dad on Bryan Cranston in this first look preview, and apparently, it's not going to go well for either one of them.

Over the holidays, Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving dad and his family visit his daughter at Stanford, where he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward Silicon Valley billionaire boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The straight-laced Ned thinks Laird, who has absolutely no filter, is a wildly inappropriate match for his daughter. The one-sided rivalry, and Ned's panic level, escalate when he finds himself increasingly out of step in the glamorous high-tech hub, and learns that Laird is about to pop the question.

'Why Him?' Teams Bryan Cranston with James Franco
James Franco
Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has signed on to join James Franco in the upcoming 20th Century Fox comedy Why Him? We first reported on the project back in February, when James Franco signed on to star for producers Shawn Levy and Ben Stiller. Production is scheduled to begin this coming February in Los Angeles.

The story centers on a father (Bryan Cranston) from the Midwest who decides to travel with his family to visit their daughter at college over the holiday season. The dad gets quite a surprise when he meets her new tech billionaire boyfriend (James Franco). A bitter rivalry ensues between the father and his daughter's boyfriend that quickly spirals out of control.

John Hamburg (I Love You, Man) is directing Why Him? from a script he co-wrote with Ian Helfer (The Oranges). John Hamburg's other directorial credits include Safe Men and Along Came Polly. He...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
What Hollywood Gets Right (and So Wrong) About Staten Island
Saturday Night Live (1975)
The release of Saturday Night Live head writer — and Staten Island native — Colin Jost’s coming-of-age comedy Staten Island Summer (available on Netflix Friday after a one-week run in theaters) isn’t the first time the “forgotten borough” has taken center stage in a movie or TV show. But as a native myself, I’ve always been surprised by how underrepresented the Island has been onscreen. Apart from 2009’s Staten Island (a barely noticed crime drama starring Ethan Hawke), the Island’s main claim to fame on the big screen has been when it doubled for other places in movies: The Godfather (Long Island), Safe Men (Rhode Island, weirdly enough), and School of Rock, where the venerable St. George Theatre was the setting for the final battle of the bands, though the location was never identified. The theater also performed double-duty on TV’s Smash, where it served as both...

Bill Hader’s List of 200 Essential Comedies Everyone Should See
Bill Hader has come a long way since his stint on Saturday Night Live, creating many popular characters and impersonations such as Stefon, Vincent Price and CNN’s Jack Cafferty. He is one of the highlights in such films as Adventureland, Knocked Up, Superbad and Pineapple Express, and so it is easy to see why author Mike Sacks interviewed him for his new book Poking A Dead Frog. In it, Hader talks about his career and he also lists 200 essential movies every comedy writer should see. Xo Jane recently published the list for those of us who haven’t had a chance to read the book yet. There are a ton of great recommendations and plenty I haven’t yet seen, but sadly my favourite comedy of all time isn’t mentioned. That would be Some Like It Hot. Still, it really is a great list with a mix of old and new.

Questions and Answers With Sam Rockwell
Get ready to see a different side of Sam Rockwell. Well known for his goofy charm in movies such as this summer's "The Way Way Back" and as a suave bad guy in "Charlie's Angels" and "Iron Man 2," Rockwell's role in this weekend's indie "A Single Shot" could come as a shock. He plays John Moon, a West Virginian man who finds himself in a spot of trouble after he accidentally murders a young woman while hunting in the woods. Soon, he's the one being hunted.

We caught up with Rockwell prior to the movie's release, chatting on his trademark dance moves, the thick West Virginia accent he adopted for the role and the power of a good beard.

Talk to me a little bit about "A Single Shot." You're known for playing a very different kind of role than the very countrified, rough character in John Moon.

I think that I just wanted,...

Highlight Reel: Paul Giamatti, From Veal Chop to John Adams to 'John Dies at the End'
Paul Giamatti
“What I would hope is that people think that I was a guy who was good at his job.” So says Paul Giamatti about his potential legacy, and it’s hard to imagine that moviegoers could come to any other conclusion. The New Haven native has brought his unique brand of angst-ridden earnestness to great, real performances in “American Splendor,” “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man” (for which he earned an Oscar nomination), “Win Win” and many others. Giamatti next appears in the Jan. 25 release “John Dies at the End,” a whacked-out horror film directed by Don Coscarelli (“Bubba Ho-Tep”) about a mysterious drug called Soy Sauce that allows users to read people’s minds and cross dimensions. Indiewire recently caught up with Giamatti to hear stories about what was going on behind some of his most memorable screen work. “Safe Men” (1998) Giamatti plays a fashion-challenged mob...

Sam Rockwell: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 You Won’t Remember
Through a barrage of fantastic performances, Sam Rockwell has established himself as one of the most reliable character actors working in the movies today. Over the last 15 years Rockwell has built a film resume that speaks volumes about his range as an actor, taking in comedy and drama and everything else in between. He is an actor who can not only hold his own with the best in Hollywood blockbusters, but also keep his feet firmly planted in the roots of independent film as well. He creates characters of seamless originality, with no two performances quite the same.

The great film critic Roger Ebert once compared his style to that of Christopher Walken, which is a high compliment to be compared to an Oscar winning legend. Hopefully one day soon Rockwell can join Walken’s company in legendary Oscar winner status, but until then and to celebrate the release of...

2011 Emmys Wishlist: Nominate Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage
I've kept a close eye on Peter Dinklage ever since he played a diminutive hitman in the underrated indie comedy Safe Men (if you've never seen it, rent it). But finding roles for Dinklage is simultaneously easy and challenging. Dinklage was born with a condition called Achondroplasia, which causes dwarfism.so whenever a script calls for a little person, an elf, or anyone else who's only as tall as a nightstand, Dinklage usually ends up on the casting agent's shortlist. For every other role, things aren't so simple.

Aside from 2003's The Station Agent, for which Dinklage was showered with praise as the star, roles written for...  More >>...

John Hamburg Brings the Love to I Love You, Man
The writer-director of this hilarious comedy talks about his hilarious cast, the wonderful DVD features, and more

Writer-director John Hamburg's career saw him go from cult-hit writer-director with Safe Men to writing the blockbuster comedy Meet the Parents and writing another cult comedy hit in Zoolander. Hamburg finds himself in the director's chair once again with his latest film, I Love You, Man, which comes to DVD and Blu-ray on August 11. I recently spoke on the phone with Hamburg about his new film and here's what he had to say.

I loved the film in the theaters and I checked out the special features and you have quite a DVD on your hands here.

John Hamburg: Oh, thanks man. This is the first movie that I directed where my editing crew and I did a lot of the special features on the DVD ourselves. It was really fun to get into that.

Steve Zahn, you rock!
There are some actors whose mere presence on the bill puts you in a good mood. Patricia Clarkson does this for me. Joan Cusack, Judy Greer, Ben Shenkman, Harry Dean Stanton. Steve Zahn owns this territory. From Reality Bites to Joy Ride, I'll watch just about any movie this guy shows up in. Many I'm willing to wait for the DVD. Management (what kind of movie title is that?), I'm looking at you. So it was with gusto that I hauled my ass out of the heat and caught the 10 a.m. showing of A Perfect Getaway, which incidentally is a great fun piece of air-conditioned throwaway about a couple on their Hawaii hiking trip who run into fingerprint-shaving murderers. There were three people in the theater, which might account for its modest $5+ million opening. But I got my Zahn fix. And I've got a new girl crush on Samantha Who?...

Free Flick Fridays: Safe Men
Safe Men Dir. John Hamburg (1998) Can't get enough Sam Rockwell lately? Well, neither can we. Long before he landed on the Moon (Tff '09) with Duncan Jones and Kevin Spacey, Rockwell and walking-comic-relief Steve Zahn were Safe Men. Today's pick was directed by John Hamburg (who had a hit this year with I Love You, Man and also has written flicks like Zoolander and Meet the Parents), and follows two wannabe-singers (Rockwell and Zahn) in Providence, Rhode Island. When the pair is mistaken for a team of master safecrackers, local hoodlums persuade the two into their service. Trouble and hilarity ensue. And to complicate things further is the boss-man's daughter (Christina Kirk), who refuses to date gangsters. Safe Men is classic mistaken identity with a stellar supporting cast: Mark Ruffalo, Harvey Fierstein, Paul Giamatti, and Michael Lerner all make appearances. HuffPost Review: Moon
Sam Rockwell is one of those underrated actors who works all the time in indie films but rarely seems to land anything larger than a supporting role in studio productions (most recently in Frost/Nixon). His resume is dotted with little-seen gems that might have made him a star if they'd had any exposure to a mass audience. Off the top of my head, I can come up with Box of Moonlight, Jerry and Tom, Lawn Dogs, Safe Men and last year's Choke. Add Moon to that list -- yet another small film I fear will only find an audience in the DVD/cable aftermarket. Moon is an acting tour de force in which Rockwell's performance -- or, more accurately, performances -- lift what could have been an intellectual exercise into an emotionally compelling movie. Rockwell plays Sam Bell, the lone employee on a mining...

The Motion/Captured Review: "I Love You, Man"
It's been just over ten years since John Hamburg's "Safe Men" was released.  If you haven't seen that film, it's on DVD right now, and I highly recommend tracking down a copy.  It's a great small quirky comedy with Steve Zahn, Paul Giamatti, and Sam Rockwell, and it's one of those movies that I've probably pushed on more friends over the years than I can count.  And every single time, the person who I give it to ends up loving it.  As a result, I've been interested in whatever Hamburg's up to since then.  He's co-written both "Meet The Parents" and...

"Angel"

French helmer François Ozon's first English language feature is an adaptation of Brit author Elizabeth Taylor's seriocomic novel of the same title and promises to be a campy, ironic throwback to the melodramas of 1950s Hollywood. New Red-Band Clip For 'I Love You, Man'
I had a chance to see "I Love You, Man" at this year's Butt-Numb-a-Thon, and although it's not a Judd Apatow production, I guarantee a lot of people will think it is.  It's actually written and directed by John Hamburg, whose best credit before this was the underrated and underseen "Safe Men" with Sam Rockwell and Paul Giamatti.  The Apatow confusion will probably result from the presence of both Paul Rudd and Jason Segel in the film, as well as a general bromance tone that the Apatow films have mined so successfully the last few years. I liked the film a...

Choke
Choke Directed by: Clark Gregg Cast: Sam Rockwell, Angelica Huston, Kelly Macdonald, Brade William Henke Time: 1 hr 30 mins Rating: R Plot: A sex-addicted con-man (Rockwell) dropped out of medical school to get a job to afford his mother's (Huston) hospital bills. He also plays on the sympathies of others who rescue him from choking to death at restaurants. Who’s It For? It's a dark comedy that should have gone darker. Based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel, it doesn't carry the same bite or impact as Fight Club. Expectations: I actually had the book Choke waiting for me at the library, but due to an early screening, I didn't read it before the film. All I knew was Rockwell was starring. Safe Men made me a Rockwell fan. Scorecard (0-10) Actors: Sam Rockwell as Victor: Rockwell's wispy loaf of a haircut doesn't aid him well, but he does his best...
