The artist who is perhaps the best young Mc of 2024, Doechii, was sitting off in the corner in a Manhattan rehearsal studio, getting ready to be part of Rolling Stone’s second annual Musicians on Musicians event. So of course she was quietly reading a book about the famous painter Jean-Michel Basquiat. All around her, a band was setting up, getting ready to make magic, as Doechii studied Basquiat’s art in search of visual ideas for her own output, one young Black genius exploring the work of another. She...

Since Heath Ledger’s tragic death in 2008, Hollywood took a turn for the better in terms of addiction and sobriety. The lingering yet rampant effects of hard substances from the industry’s rock-n-roll era subsided and actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Yellowstone star Wes Bentley turned over a new leaf for good.

Yellowstone star Wes Bentley, who has been on everyone’s radar since his appearance as the cruel and bloodthirsty Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane in The Hunger Games, now relives his past with a touch of nostalgia.
Yellowstone Star Reveals His Fiery Struggle With Addiction
Wes Bentley has had a formidable career to boast of, with films in his résumé that most would kill for.

The alternative music scene is having a great 2024. This year has given us a great array of albums in the genre, including the return of many iconic artists from the past 15 years. With that said, all eyes so far are on what seems to be a three-way race for the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy, which is led by three previous winners looking to repeat.
The first of the three is Brittany Howard, who is sure to be nominated for her sophomore solo project, “What Now.” She previously swept the alternative and rock categories with her band Alabama Shakes back in 2016. Her debut solo album, “Jaime,” was also a success at the Grammys, earning five nominations including a win for Best Rock Song (“Stay High”). Howard was surely next in line that year for Best Alternative Album, which went to Fiona Apple (“Fetch the Bolt Cutters“), whom Howard beat for Rock Song,...

Brittany Howard has announced her new album What Now, the Alabama Shakes singer’s first solo LP since her acclaimed 2019 debut Jaime.
Ahead of What Now’s release, Howard has shared the album’s first single and title track, complete with a video directed by Danilo Parra:
“‘What Now’ is maybe the truest and bluest of all the songs,” Howard said in a statement. “It’s never my design to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I needed to say what was on my mind without editing myself. I like...

Francisco Javier Rodríguez's Jaime is now showing exclusively on Mubi starting April 5, 2023, in the series Brief Encounters.I met Jaime when I placed a camera in one of the administrative offices at the psychiatric wing of San Fernando’s public hospital; a small rural city in Chile’s sixth region. As I didn’t have formal authorization to film inside the hospital at the time, we devised a sort of “confessional room” where people could talk in front of the camera as they pleased.I was back in Chile for the first time since my father’s death four years before, and I found myself scraping for memories in the form of objects that belonged to him, while the rest of my family had already moved on. Jaime came to talk to us on the very first day. He had arrived at that hospital many years back after a...

With the 2021 Grammys just around the corner on March 14, the question on everyone’s mind is who will come out on top. Especially this year, with award shows seemingly harder to predict than ever (we’re looking at you Andra Day and Alejandro Sanz), a couple of artists could potentially take home more awards than expected, while others may underperform.
Scoring nine nominations this year including Record of the Year (twice) and Song of the Year, it’s safe to say Beyoncé has to win something at least. Her best bets are probably in genre categories, with “Black Parade” leading the odds for Best R&b Song and Best R&b Performance, as well as her Megan Thee Stallion collaboration “Savage” ahead so far in our predictions for Best Rap Performance.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards are held in 2021, but the eligibility period for these kudos celebrating the best in music actually started on September 1, 2019, ending on August 31, 2020. So who will win Album of the Year?
This eligibility period is new for the Grammys. The recording academy moved up their calendar in 2020 in response to the Oscars, which moved their ceremony up to early February, which was when the Grammys usually aired. So the Grammys shifted their telecast to early January and adopted an eligibility calendar that ended a month earlier.

But that’s not the only change the Grammys have undergone in recent years. For the 61st annual event held in 2019, the academy expanded its top four general field categories from five nominees to eight in part as a response to criticisms over a lack of diversity among the nominees and winners.

The eligibility period for the Grammys used to be October 1 through September 30, but they changed things for the 2020 awards. The Oscars decided to move up their calendar so that their awards ceremony landed on the first week of February, which is usually the Grammys’ turf. So the Grammys decided to move up their telecast into January, and they moved back their eligibility cutoff by one month.
Now the eligibility period is September 1 through August 31, so before the 2020 Grammys even aired we already had potential 2021 contenders all over the charts, like Post Malone‘s “Hollywood’s Bleeding,” Camila Cabello‘s “Romance” and Harry Styles‘s “Fine Line,...
