Aronofsky, Clooney and del Toro are heading to the Lido; Alberto Barbera reveals the ones that got away.
Ahead of the world’s oldest festival, the buzz is palpable once again.
However, the flavour to this year’s Venice line-up is noticeably different from recent editions with an emphasis on internationalism, discoveries and innovation over large canvas studio fare.
If last year’s Venice lineup was a veritable treasure trove of big name Us and international filmmakers, this year’s lineup has a slightly more tempered feel to it, which nonetheless remains full of intrigue.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Tom Hanks and Clint Eastwood’s real-life drama about airline pilot Sully (Warner Bros.) far surpassed all expectations, making nearly $10 million more than my prediction with an opening weekend of $35 million in 3,525 theaters, also making it one of the biggest openings for a movie opening the weekend after Labor Day. The Screen Gems thriller When the Bough Breaks disappointed compared to some of their similar releases, taking second place with around where we predicted with around $14 million. The lower profile animated film The Wild Life (Summit/Lionsgate) did end up in fifth place behind Don’t Breathe and Suicide Squad, but with a measly $3.3 million in 2,493 theaters. As expected, Relativity’s theatrical return with its own horror/thriller The Disappointments Room...

In collecting my impressions about “Everest,” which opened this year’s Venice Film Festival, I started thinking not about other epic adventure movies but about HBO’s “Show Me a Hero,” the recently-completed six-part miniseries about the battle over low-income housing in Yonkers, New York. The two couldn’t be further apart in terms of genre, but both projects are true stories adapted from non-fiction. (Even though Jon Krakauer is a character in “Everest,” this movie isn’t an adaptation of “Into Thin Air”; the credited sources are Beck Weathers’ “Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest” and...

A disaster movie played out at 35,000 feet, Everest is essentially a true-life Cliffhanger, less the criminal schemes and Craig Fairbrass shouting about soccer. The film’s first trailer lends a sense of nature’s awe to the derring-do of a small band trying to scale the Earth’s highest point. Then things go wrong. Very, very wrong...Far from keeping its powder dry, Universal’s first trailer plunges us straight into to the freezing chaos of a fateful summit climb. The story is loosely inspired by real events (the 1996 disaster recounted in Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air) and sees Jason Clarke leading a party of climbers up the Nepalese monolith as Kiwi mountaineer Rob Hall. Alongside him on the slopes are Josh Brolin as Doctor Beck Weathers, John Hawkes as Doug Hansen and Jake Gyllenhaal as Scott Fischer, the leader of a separate expedition. Things are progressing nicely, with...

The year 2015 is shaping up to be a very exciting time at the movies. Blockbuster sequels like Star Wars and Avengers plus exciting new adventures from Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are arriving over the next year. Here is a list of the highly anticipated movies I’m looking forward to in 2015.
Please share with us the movies your most looking forward to by reaching out to us on Twitter and Facebook.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
The assembled team of superheroes return featuring Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk and two new additions, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The trailer showed a rather dark side that is sure to accompany a bigger and louder sequel. I enjoyed the first movie, but something tells me this one will top it.

I've already listed my top ten most anticipated blockbusters of the new year and now I'll take a look at the rest of the field as I've done my best to whittle things down to an even twenty films. So before you get in a huff that your favorite franchises aren't listed, just remember you can view all my anticipated blockbusters right here, I simply didn't know how to write the headline other than to just say these were my most anticipated movies without any further distinction. That said, I think I have a nice rounded list for you here. Obviously several from the major studios, but also a few overseas entries to spice things up. Plenty of Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal and a couple starring Rachel Weisz along with several of my favorite directors coming with new films for the new year. If you're wondering where films such...

Chicago – A feature-length comedy is a daunting undertaking. But being consistently funny for 2 straight hours is like climbing Mount Everest blindfolded with no arms while taking selfies using your feet.
Special effects mean nothing in the land of comedy. It’s all about the writing and the acting (in that order). To give you a sense of who you’re working with here, I find “Anchorman” hilarious and “Burn After Reading” for a dark comedy. Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” hits more than it misses, but his return accomplishes the reverse with “A Million Ways to Die in the West” without a reason for being.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Double entendres like “That’s horseshit!” (referring to intentionally placed manure in the middle of a statement of disdain) fall flat while a game at the fair called “Runaway Slave” is genuinely funny (and finds a way for a recently unchained man to appear for a perfect post-credits cameo). Likewise,...

Universal Pictures has not a single blockbuster movie on its 2014 slate. So why is it posting some of its most impressive numbers for years?
Feature
Once upon a time, Universal Pictures had its slate for 2014 pretty much sorted. It was to base it around two massive blockbuster sequels, a pair of tentpole pictures that were of sufficient size for others studios to steer clear of them. And that would then give the studio the latitude to place a few other, cheaper bets around the board.
But then, last year, there was a change of plan. Jurassic Park 4 became Jurassic World, and more worryingly for Universal, it bounced from the summer of 2014 to the summer of 2015. That meant that Universal's blockbuster strategy hung on Fast & Furious 7, a sequel that the studio had fasttracked - at the cost of director Justin Lin - so that it followed Fast & Furious 6 by a mere year.

Of all the difficult tasks that life on this planet has to offer, from grad school to Dead Souls, climbing a mountain is one of the most daunting, and doesn.t change all that much as the years go by. 2 Guns director Baltasar Kormakur.s next film, Everest, centers on one of the deadliest mountain climbs in history, and Golden Globe winner Robin Wright and Sam Worthington join this already stacked cast to watch the deadly fiasco from the sidelines. Exclusive: Cross Creek and Walden Media are backing the $65 million Working Title feature for Universal, which Baltasar Kormakur is directing. Everest stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Scott Fischer, Josh Brolin as Beck Weathers, Jason Clarke as Rob Hall, and John Hawkes as Doug Hansen. Shooting starts January 13 in the Dolomites in Italy and will continue in Nepal and Iceland. This is one of two studio-backed films titled Everest — the other being the Doug Liman-helmed pic for Sony. And on Monday, Fox landed a 10-part event series from Alcon Entertainment about a group of hikers trying to hike Mount Everest. Working Title’s feature, produced by the company’s partners Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, was weathering a storm just a few weeks ago, after Emmett/Furla Films had exited as co-financier and the producers were trying to secure new funding. The pic is based on the disastrous 1996 attempt to scale the world’s tallest mountain.

Jake Gyllenhaal has left the woods ... for a trip to the mountains?
The actor, who was signed on to play a prince in the Disney musical "Into the Woods," a role that would have reunited him with "End of Watch" co-star Anna Kendrick, has dropped out, reports TheWrap, with Deadline revealing that he's potentially making room for "Everest," a movie about the deadly 1996 climbing season detailed in Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air."

Jason Clarke and John Hawkes set to appear in film about storm that left eight climbers dead on the world's tallest mountain
Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke and John Hawkes are all in line to star in the mountain-climbing disaster movie Everest, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Iceland's Baltasar Kormákur (The Deep, Contraband) will direct for production company Working Title. Everest is based on real-life events that took place in 1996 when a freak storm hit the world's tallest mountain, leaving eight climbers dead. The story was made famous by Jon Krakauer in the book Into Thin Air, which described how he survived to tell the tale. Kormákur's take follows two separate expedition groups whose lives come under threat.
Clarke is being sought to play New Zealand climber Rob Hall, leader of one of the teams, while Gyllenhaal is set to play Scott Fischer, his opposite number with the other expedition.

Picking Liam Neeson's best role is like picking the solar system's most inhabitable rock (planet Earth) or The Discovery Channel's best miniseries ('Planet Earth') -- there just isn't that much room for debate. Sure, he was a total bad-ass in 'Ethan Frome' and he narrated the crap out of IMAX's 'Everest,' but Liam Neeson was born with a very particular set of skills, and all of them were put to indelible work as the eponymous anti-hero in Steven Spielberg's 'Schindler's List.'
The thing about Spielberg's hallowed Holocaust saga is that -- between the fluidity of the filmmaking and the hypnotic power of the performances -- this three-hour pastiche of ghastly genocidal imagery is about as eminently watchable as movies get (an issue with which certain circles have taken considerable offense). News dropped last week that Steven Spielberg has recruited Daniel Day-Lewis for his long-gestating biopic of America's 16th and perhaps greatest president: Lincoln. Further, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner will write the screenplay adaptation of Doris Kearns Goodwin’s best-selling book, Team of Rivals. Upon hearing this nuclear combination of America’s best and brightest creative talent, we here at Little Gold Men immediately made straight for our bookies and wagered what remains of our 401k on Lincoln to sweep the 2012 Oscars. Previously, Lincoln had looked like it was a log cabin headed for the wood chipper after Spielberg kept pushing it off to film Tin Tin and War Horse. The John Wilkes Booth moment seemed to come when long-attached Liam Neeson finally backed away from the role, citing his age. Now that actor-of-his-generation Day-Lewis has landed the part (after a knock-out series of auditions respectively titled Gangs of New York...

Geffen reconstructs the tragic assault on Everest by Mallory and Irvine while observing Anker's and Leo Houlding's attempt to repeat the earlier expedition using the primitive equipment of 1924.
It's a handsome, deeply affecting picture, narrated by Liam Neeson and making excellent use of the correspondence between Mallory and his wife, Ruth. Ruth's letters were recorded by Neeson's wife, Natasha Richardson, six weeks before her death.

Fascinating documentary about George Mallory's ill-fated Everest expedition. By Cath Clarke
In 1999, the top American mountaineer Conrad Anker discovered the body of George Mallory on Everest. Mallory and his young climbing partner, Sandy Irvine, disappeared in 1924, last spotted just 800 metres from the peak. The enduring mystery is whether they were going up or coming down (which would place them at the summit 30 years before Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary). In this National Geographic documentary Anker goes back to Everest to retrace Mallory's expedition. With the exception of some TV-duff recreations and CSI-style razzle-dazzle it is fascinating. What drives men and women to risk snow blindness, frostbite, (there is a gruesome story of a man coughing up a bit of frozen larynx) and a good chance of death on Everest? Mallory's famous answer was, of course: "Because it's there." The film is at its most absorbing as Liam Neeson narrates an account of Mallory's life,...

“Why do you want to climb Mount Everest?” “Because it’s There”.
For those that don’t know their history, George Mallory was a British mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s and who was last seen just a few hundred metres from the summit. This was 30 years before Hillary and Tenzing conquered it for the first recorded time.
The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest is a truly awe-inspiring documentary about the final venture to conquer Mount Everest by the climber George Mallory who never returned from his last attempt to scale it and whose body was never found until 1999. The man who found Mallory’s body, Conrad Anker, goes on his own journey to attempt the same recorded route to see if Mallory did actually reach the summit or whether he died trying as previously thought.

The Wildest Dream, a docudrama set for September release, examines enduring exploration puzzle – but mystery remains
In so many ways, it was a peculiarly British expedition to Everest – with its four cases of Montebello champagne, 60 tins of quail and foie gras, 70 porters, 300 animals, and the climbers wearing hobnailed boots and gabardine jackets.
But, 86 years on, the mystery remains. Did the obsessed aesthete George Mallory and his colleague Sandy Irvine make it to the top and become the first people to conquer the world's highest and most formidable peak?
A documentary-drama, The Wildest Dream, to be released in cinemas in September, examines one of the most enduring and possibly unanswerable of exploration mysteries. While it does not offer a conclusion, it does throw up some fascinating new angles, and shows that the pair could have made it to the top.
