Il était une fois en Chine : Dr Wong en Amérique

Jackie Chan & Jet Li Played 1 Kung Fu Movie Character A Combined 7 Times
Image
Jackie Chan & Jet Li have both portrayed Wong Fei-hung multiple times in their kung fu careers. Wong Fei-hung, a real-life kung fu master, was known for his martial arts prowess and medical skills. Wong Fei-hung's popularity as a character in kung fu films allows for creative interpretations in storytelling by filmmakers.

Jackie Chan and Jet Li have had multiple turns at playing Wong Fei-hung in their kung fu movies. For the most part, the paths of the two kung fu legends have only converged once on the big screen, which was the time Jackie Chan and Jet Li starred together in The Forbidden Kingdom. However, their history with real-life kung fu master Wong Fei-hung marks gives them another connection.

Along with Bruce Lee, the two are widely regarded as the biggest stars in the history of kung fu movies. Chan and Li have all led separate, thriving careers as leading actors,...

Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
The Criterion Channel’s July Lineup Includes A.I., British Noir, Elvis & More
Steven Spielberg at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

While Isabella Rossellini...

“Wong Fei-hung And The Criterion Treasure”

By Raymond Benson

What character in cinematic history has appeared in the most films? Our friend the Internet says that Sherlock Holmes holds the record, followed by Dracula. However, most people outside of Asia might not realize that possibly third on the list is a Chinese martial arts practitioner and physician named Wong Fei-hung, who was a real person who lived mostly in the Canton area from 1847-1925. Wong became a cultural folk hero in his native country, spawning literature, comics, television series, and many, many films.

Wong Fei-hung has been known in fictional settings as Huang Fei-hong, Huang Fei Hong, Wong Fei Hong, and in this recent series as Wong Fei-hung. The actor most associated with the character in China is Tak-Hing Kwan, who made over 75 films between the 1940s and 1980s. Kwan is to Wong Fei-hung as Sean Connery is to James Bond.

Sammo Hung’s ‘My Beloved Bodyguard’ – A Huge Disappointment !
Sammo Hung's 'My Beloved Bodyguard' - A Huge Disappointment !Action45%Story43%2016-05-2744%Overall ScoreReader Rating: (2 Votes)69%

Right, let me first prefix this by saying that I am and always will be a big fan of Sammo Hung.

But I’m also a fan of quality movies and If I come across a movie that really leaves a bad taste in the mouth then there is no way I can sugar-coat how bad it is ! ( I did the same with Jackie Chan’s incredibly poor ‘Chinese Zodiac’ ) , and let me tell you this My Beloved Bodyguard is bad. !

My Beloved Bodyguard aka ‘The Bodyguard’ is the latest film from one of the most pivotal figures in Martial Arts / Action Cinema.

The film features an all star cast including Andy Lau ( Infernal Affairs, House of Flying Daggers , Shaolin ) , Eddie Peng (Rise of the Legend ), Tsui Hark , Jun Hu ( Let The...

Peking Opera Days

The Peking Opera school was run from a small theatre by Master Yu Jim Yuen, this was where Sammo Hung would begin his journey. In them days, the stundents would normally enroll for around 10 years, each day performing gruelling tasks for up to 18 hours a day which included training in the Martial Arts, weapons training, acrobatics, acting and singing. The Peking opera of course brought together Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo, who would eventually be known as the 7 Little Fortunes. Starring Sammo Hung ,Deng Chao ,Wang Xuebing,Tian Liang, Andy Lau

It feels like its been forever since we last saw Sammo on the big screen yet he’s actually had roles in a few films over the last few years – Rise of the Legend, Once Upon a time in Shanghai . In those films though Sammos role was only in supporting, but now he’s back in lead and damn does this look good.

Sammo brings Andy Lau along for the ride (fresh of the excellent ‘ Saving Mr Wu‘). This is our first look official look at the film and based on the trailer this could be something special indeed.

Notes: This is Sammo’s first directed film since Once Upon a time in China and America (1997), Andy Lau is also a producer.

The Raymond Chow And Golden Harvest Era (Part 2)
(1981-1989 – The Three Dragons)

After the early 1980’s, Golden Harvest started to branch out into the modern-day world leaving behind the Kung Fu cinema age and progressing into something massive. From 1981 onwards, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (The Three Dragons) were about to embark on a sensational journey, progressing from there Kung Fu genre into modern-day Martial Arts and stunt work, something Shaw Brothers were left behind and Golden Harvest was to be the new global company.

Jackie Chan back then headed to the United states to try to break into the international market, but the movies he appeared in didn’t really take off and Jackie was also disappointed with the filming of The Big Brawl. Jackie felt he never had chance to show off his action choreography and wasn’t given the space to add his world of experience to the movie. Although it was Directed...

Sammo Hung Directs Andy Lau In The Bodyguard
Last week, we announced that Sammo Hung was to team back up with fellow peking opera brother Jackie Chan for the movie The Old Soldier, but that is no longer happening. The movie has now been changed to The Bodyguard and will now star the fantastic Andy Lau, as Jackie is filming for a new movie and didn’t have time.

The Bodyguard will be produced by Bill Kong, Andy Lau, Chan Pui-wah and Ivy Ho, Sammo Hung will direct the movie and will also star. Sammo has not directed since he worked with Jet Li on Once Upon A Time In China And America, so fans should be very excited that Sammo is back where he belongs.

Plot:

A retired bodyguard (Hung) who has settled in the dark and unknown corner of the world where China, Russia and North Korea meet. Suffering from the beginnings of dementia, the bodyguard...

Sammo Hung To Direct Jackie Chan In The Old Soldier
Well this is some amazing news and very long overdue, Sammo Hung is to reunite with Jackie Chan for the upcoming movie The Old Soldier. Sammo Hung will also be director of the movie, something he hasn’t done since directing Jet Li in Once Upon A Time In China And America.

Jackie has just wrapped up Dragon Blade, a movie which looks amazing, but this news just epic for all Jackie, Sammo and Martial art fans around the world.

Last time Sammo Hung directed Jackie Chan was back in the 90’s when they teamed up for Mr.Nice Guy, others include Dragons Forever, Heart Of Dragon, My Lucky Stars, Twinkle, Twinkle Lucky Stars, Wheels On Meals and Winners And Sinners.

I am very excited by this news and look forward to seeing these two legends team up once again. Let’s hope they give Yuen Biao a small part also,...

Once Upon a Time in China’s Wong Fei Hung is Back in Rise of the Legend
You can’t keep a kung fu master down. Wong Fei Hung, probably most famous to Western audiences as the hero of Jet Li and Tsui Hark’s “Once Upon a Time in China” series of movies, will be returning to the big screen about 16 years after Jet and Tsui hung it up. The duo’s last Wong Fei Hung movie was 1997′s “Once Upon a Time in China and America”, which found Wong in the American West battling cowboys. Bill Kong, Liu Erdong and Ivy Ho are teaming up for the new version of the martial arts legend, with Chow Hin Yeung and Christine To directing and writing, respectively. The two previously teamed together on the crime dramas “Nightfall” and “Murderer”. This version of Wong Fei Hung is said to chronicle “the origins of the kung fu master and his emergence as a figure of righteousness and justice during...
