There's a line in "The Dark Knight" from Heath Ledger's Joker: "In their last moments, people show you who they really are." That's likely why a great death scene can be an actor's dream come true. They have a chance to portray their character in a wholly different light than what we've seen previously. They can deliver one last heart-wrenching line of dialogue that'll stick with the protagonist. If nothing else, the audience can get blindsided and react accordingly to some shocking deaths they couldn't have seen coming.
That's assuming, of course, the death is written and performed well. There's nothing worse than having a scene that's supposed to carry dramatic weight, and the audience can't help but laugh at how stupidly someone died. Viewers instantly become aware they're watching a movie and can't reconcile the tonal dissonance of what they've witnessed. There are plenty of death scenes out there,...

Volcano Princess has been released on Xbox Game Pass this week, and the reception is overwhelmingly positive. This 2023 title has been sitting at Overwhelingly Positive reviews on Steam as well, yet there are issues that developers Egg Hatcher refuse to fix.
The title is a parenting simulator blended with RPG elements, and as insane as that sounds, it works quite well. It’s all about raising your daughter, but the only thing stopping her from having a great childhood experience is bugs, and it seems like Egg Hatcher is in no rush to fix it.
Bugs have hindered good parenting in Volcano Princess
Even though Egg Hatcher’s Volcano Princess has opened to rave reviews, both on Steam and Xbox Game Pass, the bugs that riddled the game two years ago are still present to this day, which is frustrating. You’d think two years would be a decent time...

The Dice game in Volcano Princess is so far one of the most confusing mini-games ever to exist. It is certainly because of the lack of tutorials, which makes it tough to figure out how to play this game. For the amount of gold you can earn from the Dice game, it’s worth playing a round every now and then. Moreover, you might also want to use the Dice in your inventory when you enter the Central Plaza.
With the Dice game getting tougher with every passing game, you should always be prepared in a match. To help with that, here’s a guide that explains how to play the Dice game in Volcano Princess easily.

Were you worried that there was only one upcoming movie where someone gets eaten by a whale? Fret not. There are two, actually.
Leslie Grace — an actor and singer known for "In the Heights" and the "Batgirl" movie that Warner Bros. deleted from existence — is set to star in director Felipe Vargas' next movie "Propel" (per Variety), which is described as "'Gravity' meets '127 Hours' underwater." Grace will star as diver Kate Acosta, who ends up swallowed by an enormous sperm whale while performing a commercial dive ... and who has to figure out how to escape with her life.
The particularly funny thing about this news is that "Whalefall," a novel by Daniel Kraus, is also being adapted into a major motion picture. In March 2025, Deadline reported that Josh Brolin was in talks to join the project's cast alongside star Austin Abrams, with Brian Duffield ("No One Will Save You...

Like the 1970s, the '90s were a great decade for disaster films. In addition to films like "Deep Impact," "Armageddon," "Independence Day," "Dante's Peak," and "Volcano," there was, of course, "Twister." The Jan de Bont film followed a storm-chasing couple on the verge of divorce, chasing one of the worst outbreaks of tornados in the history of Oklahoma. Though the film is now almost three decades old, it holds up!
There are lots of reasons why the movie works so well. One major factor was de Bont's insistence on practical effects. "We dropped those combines hanging from helicopters onto the road as the car was driving, which, of course, makes for the best reaction you can get from the actors, because it's goddamned real," he told Vulture. "They really fall from the sky, and it is not like a little fall."
Another major aspect of the film's success was its cast.

Many years ago, onlookers watched with bated breath as Wyatt Earp marched out to confront ... Wyatt Earp. It was the mid-'90s, and two rival films about the legendary Wild West lawman were vying for the cinemagoer's buck: First up, on Christmas Day 1993, was George P. Cosmatos's "Tombstone," followed six months later by Lawrence Kasdan's "Wyatt Earp." Twin movies were a regular phenomenon in the '90s: You had "Deep Impact" versus "Armageddon," "Dante's Peak" versus "Volcano," and even "Antz" versus "A Bug's Life." But the dueling Westerns had a lot more at stake, because there was a significant beef between the two productions.
Kevin Costner was set to star in "Tombstone" before falling out with screenwriter Kevin Jarre, moving on to develop his own epic biopic of the frontier marshal with Lawrence Kasdan. Rather than let things lie, however, rumors circulated that Costner had tried using his...

Warp Films, the British production company behind Netflix’s “Adolescence,” is turning 1984’s Threads into a TV series.
“Renowned for its groundbreaking portrayal of a fictional apocalypse, Threads offers a harrowing depiction of life in nuclear war-era Britain, set in Sheffield,” Warp noted. “This adaptation will explore prescient issues through rich, character-driven storytelling. The original film’s chilling account immerses viewers in the struggles of ordinary people facing unimaginable hardship.”
The first film to depict nuclear winter, the British made-for-tv docudrama shows the bleak effects of a nuclear attack on the working-class city of Sheffield, England as the fabric of society unravels.

More than 200 years after “Frankenstein” was published, Mary Shelley has never been hotter. The hulking character that the Gothic novelist conjured up — half man, half beast, all monster — will feature prominently in two upcoming movies from A-list directors that debut mere months apart.
The first, “Frankenstein,” is courtesy of Guillermo del Toro, a master of the macabre whose credits include “The Shape of Water” and “Crimson Peak.” It launches on Netflix in November and stars Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. The second, “The Bride,” will be directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is following up her acclaimed feature directing debut, “The Lost Daughter,” with a $90 million creature feature inspired by “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Warner Bros. will open this one in theaters on March 6, 2026 with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale playing the undead couple. There are several instances in film history in which two films with seemingly identical premises are released within several months of each other, sparking confusion among general audiences and comparisons from seasoned film pundits. Both Armageddonand Deep Impacttold asteroid-centric stories in 1998, competing disaster films Volcano and Dante’s Peak debuted in 1997, both Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down used the “Die Hard in the White House” premise in 2013, and families interested in animated insect comedies had to choose between Antz and A Bug’s Lifein 1998. Although Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is often considered to be one of the greatest animated films of all-time, the character herself belongs to the public domain, meaning that any studio can make their own adaptation. Mirror Mirrorand Snow White and the Huntsmanwere released just months apart in 2012, and both tried to tell the “untold story” of the “fairest maiden of them all.”...

If I had to compare "Friendship" to any sketch from Tim Robinson's "I Think You Should Leave," it'd be the one from the season 2 premiere with the haunted house. The tour guide jokingly tells the guests they're allowed to say "whatever the hell" they want, only for Robinson's character to take this as an opportunity to ask about "jizz" and "horse co*ks." We later find out the poor guy just wants to make friends, and he's grasping at whatever strategy he can think of to make a human connection.
It's tragic stuff, especially since it doesn't seem like he'd be able to hold onto a friend if he found one. If he did manage to trick someone into befriending him, it'd only be a matter of time before he did something wrong, be it by badly misreading a situation or by letting one of his many insecurities get the best of him.

The “Doctor Odyssey” crew will be rattled by a shark attack beginning with Thursday’s midseason premiere, entitled, appropriately enough, “Shark Attack!”
The shark storyline begins when First Officer Munroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) is bitten after he goes surfing with Tristan (Sean Teale) and, as Teale told TheWrap about the two-parter storyline, “Shark attacks are brutal and it only gets worse as the episodes go on.”
Teale told TheWrap, “It’s pretty rough. I’m amazed at what we filmed, actually. I’m surprised that national television is going to receive what we filmed. It’s a big event.”
Teale, Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson (who costars as Captain Robert Massey) also talked about the upcoming “Ocean’s 11”-esque crossover that brings Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) from another Ryan Murphy series, “9-1-1,” to the Odyssey.

Our first roundup of 2025 features some major releases; given the state of things, we should be very thankful for that. Note that our next column will include a lengthy list of new and recent novels and short fiction (one highlight is a short story collection from Burning director Lee Chang-dong) as well as noteworthy Blu-Ray and 4K releases from Criterion and Warner Home Entertainment. In other words, plenty to get lost in––thank goodness for that.

Volcano and Dante's Peak. Deep Impact and Armageddon. Hollywood sometimes offers up these pairs of similar cinematic experiences, and one such example, the action outing White House Down, is all set to stream for free next month. As you can now ascertain from the title, White House Down’s cinematic partner is the Gerard Butler-led Olympus Has Fallen, both of which were released in 2013. However, while the latter follows Butler’s unstoppable Secret Service agent, White House Down gives audiences Channing Tatum as an out-of-his-depth veteran who must dig deep to save the President of the United States.
Directed by the master of the disaster movie, Roland Emmerich and written by James Vanderbilt, White House Down stars Channing Tatum alongside Jamie Foxx as James Sawyer, President of the United States, with the pair finding themselves under attack during a White House tour. Imagine: you're out at a party, celebrating the December holiday season in sunny Los Angeles. Or perhaps you're on a date in the heart of the city, feeling sparks and beginning to be hopeful about the romantic promise the next few hours might hold. Then, a few short hours later, the city around you has changed irrevocably. Where your thoughts were previously of everyday frivolities and dreams of the future, you're suddenly trapped in an up-to-the-minute nightmare. The future is no longer a glittering horizon that you're looking forward to exploring. Instead, you're frozen in a never-ending Now, a state of readiness and alertness which is both invigorating and draining you simultaneously. Your mind rushes to prioritize people, places, and the most mobile of things while your physical body is in a bubble of inertia. When you wake up, you're either greeted by a horrific inferno or, if you're one of the lucky ones,...

For the most part, a trend that emerges during any particular year of cinema doesn't have anything genuinely competitive about it. Sure, there may be the "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano," "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" years, where highly similar projects are developed to compete with each other, but most trends that occur are less about an intentional duel and are more an indication of where the culture's head is at. Remember 2017, when a John Denver song turned up in no less than five separate movies? While there's no one catch-all explanation for such a thing happening, it's intriguing and potentially illuminating to identify the trend and see what, if anything, it speaks to in the contemporary real world.

Kevin Feige started his journey with Marvel Studios very early in his career. His journey with the franchise has been inspirational and fascinating at the same time. Starting his journey with the franchise on 2000’s X-Men, he was hired as an associate producer due to his knowledge of Marvel Comics.

No one could have predicted then that he would become the president of the franchise, a position that he has held for over 15 years. He has become such an important part of the beloved series that he has very few credits outside of it; two, to be exact.
While Marvel is the reason he has gained the reputation he has, the actor did work on two films before he joined the franchise. One which ended up being a cult classic film, and one which could have caused him to want to join big-scale projects.

You know that fake commercial in Tropic Thunder where Tugg Speedman and the Scorcher franchise keep coming back again… again… and again? That’s pretty much the Terminator franchise by 2019. Where over and over again it respawns and says “I’ll be back… but this time it’ll be different. It’ll be a re-imagining! Accompanied by another trilogy. No, this time we’re back with the old cast! And it’ll be like before!” It’s like Jim Carrey yelling at Matthew Broderick in The Cable Guy “I can fix it! I can make it cool again, Stephen!” But will they? For some! Not for all. This is the story of what happened to Terminator: Dark Fate. The film that may have killed the Terminator movie franchise for good.
When Terminator Genisys performed poorly at the domestic box office, Skydance Productions (which suspiciously sounds like Skynet) was left with a choice.

Love can be a wild ride, and sometimes, it takes a hard fall. Anne Heche’s relationship with Ellen DeGeneres in the late ‘90s didn’t just make headlines for being one of Hollywood’s first openly gay couples; it also left Heche with a bitter reminder that love isn’t always the golden ticket.

In 1997, the two were everywhere: on red carpets, in magazines, and in the hearts of those cheering for love to break boundaries. But, as Heche earlier recounted, her love life became a double-edged sword. She was out there, taking a stand for love, but as she put it, Hollywood wasn’t exactly handing her any roses in return.
According to the late actress, after attending a movie premiere with DeGeneres, she was swiftly shown the door, losing a significant movie deal soon after.

You don't often see the great movies coming. Sure, some classics swagger their way into theaters (like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" did in 2023), but take a look at the vast majority of the movies on your favorites queue and you'll see titles that arrived with very little fanfare. Warner Bros. didn't expect "L.A. Confidential" to take off like it did, and Columbia Pictures was absolutely stunned when "The Shawshank Redemption" rebounded after a disappointing theatrical release to become one of the most beloved motion pictures in the history of the medium.
Then there's Universal and "Field of Dreams." Kevin Costner was a movie star in 1989 on the strength of "The Untouchables," "No Way Out" and "Bull Durham," but two of those three hits were adult-skewing entertainments that traded heavily on his sex appeal.
"Field of Dreams" was ... really, what in...

The disaster movie has been a staple of the entertainment landscape for decades. As with any genre, there are a number of entries that stand above the rest, offering up extreme thrills and often pushing boundaries visually. The 1990s, in particular, was a big decade for the disaster genre, with movies chronicling all manner of natural disasters and planetary threats.
When it comes to natural disasters, titles like Twister (1996), Dante's Peak (1997), and Volcano (1997) featured impressive effects as nature wreaks havoc on various communities. When the disaster movie genre is mixed with sci-fi, the stakes are often raised even higher, and humankind itself can face extinction. Independence Day (1996) was a seminal entry in this respect, leaning particularly hard into sci-fi, but Deep Impact (1998), which features a comet on a collision course with Earth, offered up similar thrills without an alien threat. Another 1998 film took this same approach and was an even bigger hit.

Movies are now treating the aughts like a second Stone Age. Hannah Macpherson’s Time Cut revels in the 2000s nostalgia of Avril Lavigne and Vanessa Carlton needledrops after a girl travels back in time to save her deceased family member from a slasher villain. Is your déjà vu intensifying?...

Smile 2 director Parker Finn has admitted the plot of one of the year's most expected horror sequels resembles that of another of this year's horror hits, Trap. However, the director doesn't have an issue with the coincidental timing of the movie's release, which mirrors similar dual releases such as Dantes Peak and Volcano, and Armageddon and Deep Impact.
Finn is undoubtedly going through one of the best moments of his life. The horror sequel is projected to surpass expectations at the end of the weekend, possibly getting better results than the original film. Amid the questions of follow-ups, castings, and his future Possession remake, Finn spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the storyline coincidence between Smile 2 and Trap. The director used Armageddon and Deep Impact as the best examples of twin movies released around the same time when replying:

Smile 2 writer-director Parker Finn has outdone himself once more.
It’s rare for a horror sequel to surpass its hit predecessor, but Finn’s second installment has done exactly that with critics and audiences. It’s also on pace to exceed Smile‘s opening weekend box office of $22.6 million from two years ago. In any event, Smile 2‘s success shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise since Ohio native Finn already defied the odds with his feature directorial debut. The 2022 horror film about a curse that’s passed on through an unsettling smile was originally made for Paramount+, but as soon as its first test screening brought the house down, the Sosie Bacon-led film pivoted to theatrical, grossing $217 million on a $17 million budget.

With the property becoming the most popular it's been in over 20 years, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror's Doug Jones shares his thoughts on the close release between it and Robert Eggers' upcoming remake. Both movies serve as different interpretations of Henrik Galeen and F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film of the same name, itself an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Where Eggers' Nosferatu is a somewhat reimagined version of the original film in the filmmaker's unique style, A Symphony of Horror is a shot-for-shot remake utilizing practical sets and CGI to put Jones and the rest of his cast in the original film.
During an interview with Screen Rant to promote the October 18 release of his version, Jones shared his thoughts on Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and Eggers' movie releasing within two months of each other. The star, who plays Count Orlok in the shot-for-shot remake and...

As the King of the Monsters, Godzilla has proven himself to be extremely powerful, but there have been times when the kaiju has been defeated by humans in the Godzilla movies. Godzilla originally debuted in the 1954 Japanese movie, Godzilla, and has since become a steadfast figure in pop culture, with countless references in international media. The kaiju has appeared in an impressive 38 movies, with each Godzilla movie presenting a different version of the monster throughout its many eras, and the monster has battled multiple foes over the years.
From Ghidorah to Mechagodzilla, Godzilla has won many fights in his movies and has an impressive 42 wins against other kaiju throughout his movies. However, Godzilla has also fought with humans in a number of films, often attacking Japans cities and leaving them devastated. The drama tells a universal story about loss and transformation through its main character Una, played by Elín Hall. Shot on film, the movie draws from Rúnarsson’s own experiences with grief.

The news of the moment keeps veering between cutbacks and comebacks. Keep your shrink on hold.
Paramount is laying off thousands and closing its TV studio, but Skydance’s David Ellison, its new owner, promises that an important new slate is on its way. Disney is shedding employees as park attendance sags, but also is investing billions in new theme park attractions and even a solid entertainment slate (Bob Iger calls it a “turbocharge”).
Even battle-scarred United Artists with Scott Stuber as its new savior promises yet another comeback after alternate decades of brilliance and disaster.
Given all this, the ongoing drama surrounding Warner Bros Discovery’s David Zaslav seems downright comforting.
I take more than an academic interest in all this since I’ve personally been enmeshed in both ups and downs (the “ups” at ’70s Paramount were more memorable).

At the beginning of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi flick "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is attacked by vicious yeti while patrolling the frozen wastelands of the planet Hoth. The yeti, called a wampa, carries Luke back to its lair, where it feasts on the bones of some other mysterious prey. Luke's feet are frozen to the ceiling, and he remains injured and dangling, unable to defend himself. Luckily, Luke brought a lightsaber with him, and he's able to use it to free himself and slay the yeti. It's a pity that the makers of "The Empire Strikes Back" didn't think to include a scene wherein the space yeti fought Chewbacca, a space sasquatch.
In the original (and now unavailable) cuts of "Empire Strikes Back," the wampa was barely seen, achieved only through a clumsy costume and clever editing that left the bulk of its massive body obscured.

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. A pair of young adults sit on a rocky coast staring at the sun as it hovers on the horizon, casting an ochre glow over the landscape. They trade dreams, jokes and promises while smoking a joint. She teases him about being horny. He vows to break up with his girlfriend, so they no longer have to hide their relationship. Later, in bed, nestling into the grooves of each other’s bodies, they will excitedly murmur their visions of tomorrow.
None of their tomorrows comes true because the boy, Diddi (Baldur Einarsson), dies. On his way out of town, an explosion engulfs a tunnel in Reykjavik in flames, indiscriminately incinerating vehicles and bodies like his own. When the girl, Una (Elin Hall), hears the news, she is enveloped by a gutting despair.
Without ever working above a whisper, Runar Runarsson’s When the Light Breaks (Ljósbrot) finds distinctive and unexpectedly...

The near future, meaning the next couple of days, when Diddi officially breaks off his longstanding relationship with his high-school sweetheart Klara and starts a new life with Una. And the long term. A trip to Japan. A different life with a wider scope than Iceland can provide. “Should we make babies?” Diddi murmurs into Una’s ear as they lie, wrapped around each other like kittens, in his single-pillowed bed.
But when Diddi is killed in a freak fire in a road tunnel the next morning – a national disaster that claims upwards of a dozen lives – Una finds herself alone with her searing grief. Diddi...
