It's astonishing how many gorillas turned up on "Gilligan's Island." Gorillas are native to central, Western, and Eastern Africa, so it would be highly unlikely that one would organically find its way to the South Pacific, where Gilligan's Island is likely located. Gorillas, however, were common fodder for 1960s comedy writers, and they were employed frequently. Or rather, actors in gorilla costumes were employed frequently, and created an absurd subset of ape tropes that we, as a culture, still haven't fully and philosophically unpacked. 

Apes were featured heavily in the "Gilligan's Island" episodes "Diamonds Are an Ape's Best Friend", "Beauty Is as Beauty Does" (September 23), "The Chain of Command" (December 2), "Forward March", and "Our Vines Have Tender Apes". It was a profuse plethora of primate pransktership.

Star Trek has been around for much longer than its interstellar counterpart, Star Wars, but both franchises have had an equal hand in molding the modern generation and their societal identity. With a forward-looking focus on themes such as gender, race, and politics, the franchise created by Gene Roddenberry has shaped cultural thought and in turn, has become deeply entrenched with the socio-cultural identity of our time.

However, despite Roddenberry’s efforts, Star Trek‘s influence did not spread much further than entertainment. His desire to critique and call out the government’s involvement in the Vietnam War and the subsequent political upheavals in the country could all be found within the overarching themes of Star Trek. And yet, the series merely remains a television program born out of the mid-20th century’s space race frenzy.

More than a quarter of a century after its release, Galaxy Questremains among the gold standards in space sci-fi parody films. Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver, the movie that follows the cast of a 1970s space TV show who become heroes of the galaxy, is by some considered a bit of a love letter to the Star Trekfranchise.

During a panel at the Indiana Comic Convention, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked some Star Trek: The Next Generation alums what they thought of 1999’s Galaxy Quest.

“It’s perfect. It perfectly captures the essence (of Star Trek) with love and humor and intelligence…it’s so well-crafted,” said Denise Crosby, who played Lieutenant Tasha Yar in the first season of Tng and the Season 3 episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" was, by all measures, far more successful than the original "Star Trek" that preceded it. The original series wasn't a big hit when it first aired in 1966, and didn't become popular until Trekkies discovered it in reruns in the mid-1970s. By the mid-1980s, the series not only had a passionate following, but several hit "Star Trek" feature films had been made, ensuring that the franchise was long-lasting and widely celebrated. Creator Gene Roddenberry, wanting a project he could more closely oversee, launched the first spinoff "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1987, fast-forwarding the timeline of the franchise by about a century. The new show featured a new cast of characters, a new ship, and a new tone. This was, by Roddenberry's orders, to be even more diplomatic and peaceful than even the original show.

Among the many Star Trek parodies, Galaxy Quest is definitely one that stuck around. Beloved by some, and hated by others, Galaxy Quest was definitely a successful project, although there will be those who will say that it went too far. Regardless, the legacy of the movie lives on.

During the Indiana Comic Convention’s recent Star Trek: The Next Generation panel, some cast members of the series talked to the press, and one of the questions asked was about the Galaxy Quest film. How did the crew react and what is their opinion of the movie? Keep reading to find out!

The cast members in question are Jonathan Frakes and Denise Crosby, both well-known faces, and they were asked whether they consider Galaxy Quest an insult to the franchise or not. “It’s perfect.

Back in the early 2000s, it looked like "Star Trek" was pretty much done for. After 9/11, as wars began, audiences weren't really in the mood for a sci-fi franchise about gentleness, peace, and diplomacy. The national mood was reflected in the failure of Stuart Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002, often called one of the worst in the franchise. Then "Star Trek: Enterprise" was canceled in 2005. It wouldn't be until 2009 that "Star Trek" would be revived, in the form of J.J. Abrams' rebooted feature film. 

This time, however, "Star Trek" was faster, simpler, and more violent. Abrams' film was not about peace and diplomacy but trauma and revenge. The reboot set the tone for "Star Trek" for the next decade, ensuring that newer "Trek" projects were all about high-octane action and a little more rough-hewn.

In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "As Astra per Aspera", Commander Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) faces a court-martial for lying on her Starfleet Academy application. She claimed to be a human, but was, in fact, a genetically enhanced Illyrian. Thanks to the disastrous, long-ago Eugenics Wars, genetic tinkering is strictly verboten in the world of "Star Trek." As such, lying about your genes is a particularly grievous offense. Captain Pike (Anson Mount), wanting to help his first officer, seeks out the legal aid of Neera Ketoul (Yetide Badaki), an Illyrian defense lawyer who will be brave enough to stand up to Starfleet's prosecution. Ketoul was also a childhood friend of Chin-Riley, and they have some bad blood about the latter's need to hide here identity to join Starfleet. 

Neera Ketoul is an interesting character for "Star Trek," as she has made it her job to make civil rights cases ... against the Federation.

The second season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" is still awaiting a release date in North America, although French readers should be able to view it right now on the region-specific France.TV. The story of the cancelation of "Prodigy" is sad for Trekkies, as the kid-centric animated series, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was just growing into its own and emerging as a proper "Star Trek" series.

The premise was fun: in an unknown and distant part of the galaxy, a group of teenage aliens -- fleeing slavery in a mine -- discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they meet a holographic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who assumes the teens are Starfleet cadets and require tutelage. The teens are hotheaded, feisty, and brooding in the way that teens tend to be, but Janeway teaches them to operate as a crew and mature as individuals.

Star Trek fans can thank Discovery for kicking off a new era of the franchise, bringing in a bright future for the next generation of Trekkies. Over the years, the series has had a huge impact on not just the audience, but everyone it has touched both in front of and behind the camera as well. During a panel at Fan Expo San Francisco, hosted by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, series star Sonequa Martin-Green spoke about what she'll take away from Discovery as it heads into its final season next year.

In 2006, CBS began the meticulous process of remastering the original "Star Trek" series for release on Blu-ray and on HD DVD (remember those?). The live-action sequences were to be seen in high-definition for the first time, and the new versions were extrapolated from surviving 35mm masters. The show's special effects were to be recreated using modern CGI techniques, as modern HD TV screens would have made the original effects stand out in an awkward way. The release of the "remastered" Treks caused some debate among Trekkies. Was it exciting to see a TV series from 1966 brushed up to look as modern as possible, or should the shoddiness of the original be maintained for reasons of aesthetic purity? Luckily, unlike the "Special Editions" of "Star Wars," both the old versions and the new versions are readily available on Blu-ray.

William Shatner. Leonard Nimoy. Nichelle Nichols. These names belong to some of the most influential actors in television history, but they are almost interchangeable with the names James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Uhura. For better or for worse, these names and faces are inextricably tied to the characters they played.

That said, anyone who only knows the cast of Star Trek’s original series as the command crew of the USS Enterprise is missing out on some pretty fantastic acting work elsewhere. Star Trek has always had a habit of taking unlikely detours into other genres, whether it was Kirk and Spock dressing like gangsters in the Tos episode “A Piece of the Action” or the powerful Deep Spine Nine period piece “Far Beyond the Stars.” But with its most recent episode, Strange New Worlds takes the franchise in the most unexpected direction.

Directed by Dermott Downs, “Subspace Rhapsody” finds the Enterprise crew breaking into song after discovering an anomaly at the edge of the Alpha Quadrant. Those who followed along with /Film's coverage of the acclaimed season 1 know that we simply couldn't enough of the impressively (and consistently) well-written episodes and the deft character work carried throughout the entire arc of the story. But as much as the show went...

The nineteenth episode of the second season of "Star Trek," called "A Private Little War" has long been viewed as a metaphor for the Vietnam War. It involves the proliferation of arms, the deliberate involvement in another nation's civil war, and the nature of the Prime Directive. It also ends on a line of dialogue that can be read one of two ways. To this author, the ending of "A Private Little War" is clear. Captain Liam Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick on the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," has rapidly become a favorite of Trekkies everywhere. Unlike the aloof-yet-diplomatic Captain Picard, the no-nonsense Captain Sisko, or the family-friendly authoritarian Captain Janeway, Shaw is brusque, unfriendly, and even a bit of a jerk, more willing to adhere to protocol than listen to his crew. He's the kind of boss you hope you never have to work under. He's also not necessarily an incompetent starship captain and will follow whatever course of action that keeps his crew safe. Naturally, Trekkies have been quick to suggest that Captain Shaw and his crew be given their own spin-off TV series. Whether or not "Star Trek: Titan" ever appears remains to be seen, but the current season of "Picard" has not yet concluded, so many viewers are holding their breath, hoping that Shaw and his crew survive to the end.

While her name may not be one heard regularly around the water cooler (yet!), Stephanie Czajkowski (pronounced "check-house-key" as per her helpful webpage) is a memorable presence on screen.

Perhaps known best for her recurring role as Hammerhead, one of Crazy Jane's alter personalities on HBO Max's Doom Patrol, she currently portrays the Vulcan Science Officer, Lt. T'Veen, aboard the USS Titan on Star Trek: Picard.

Speaking with TV Fanatic from her home via Zoom, Czajkowski was generous with her time and thoughtful answers as we delved into her experiences joining the Star Trek family and how it's influenced her perspective on the fandom, the industry, and her ears!

Czajkowski comes by her love of Star Trek honestly. The franchise has been a part of her life from an early age.

"My father was a very, very big Star Trek fan, so Star Trek had been weaved pretty deftly throughout my life.

It’s the end of an era for Trekkies. Paramount announced that “Star Trek: Discovery,” the series that launched the current litany of “Star Trek” shows streaming on Paramount+, will end after the upcoming fifth season. The last batch of episodes are expected to premiere in early 2024 (via The Hollywood Reporter).

“As lifelong fans of Star Trek, it has been an immense honor and privilege to help bring ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ to the world,” executive producers and showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise said in a statement. “The Trek universe means so much to so many – including us – and we couldn’t be prouder of everything ‘Discovery’ has contributed to its legacy, particularly with representation. At the beginning of "Seventeen Seconds," the third episode of the third season of "Star Trek: Picard," Riker (Jonathan Frakes) talks about the moment he saw his son born. He relates a moment when his wife, Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) ran into complications during childbirth, and there was a 17-second span where he wasn't sure if his son was going to survive. This conversation — seen in flashback — establishes that Riker has a lot more at stake than he did back in the days of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He is no longer a careerist, but a family man. It makes sense that the character, now older and wiser, would also be more cautious. It's a welcome evolution of the character, and one that an old Trekkie can appreciate.

Curiously, Picard (Patrick Stewart) seems to have become conversely cavalier in his old age. During a tense battle between the U.

William Shatner is famously a spotlight hog, but even he doesn't understand why Captain Kirk is the role that's kept him famous. Ahead of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," Shatner sat down for an interview with Bill Boggs and said the enduring popularity of "Star Trek" left him "totally mystified."

While "The Motion Picture" doesn't have a sterling reputation, it is a testament to the popularity of "Star Trek." A decade-old series, ignominiously canceled after three seasons, got a second shot as a blockbuster movie. Chances like that don't come without an enduring audience, and Trekkies are some of the most devoted out there. But what makes them so devoted in the first place? Boggs had his suggestions and, despite his professed mystification, so did Shatner.

Anyone who has been to a "Star Trek" convention knows the sheer volume of "Star Trek" merchandise in the world. There are models of ships, tricorders, uniforms, communicator badges, and trading cards, not to mention t-shirts, phone cases, bumper stickers, coffee mugs, and any number of household items emblazoned with Trek indicia. This author owns a pizza knife in the shape of the U.S.S. Enterprise, with the ship's saucer section serving as the cutting blade.

Trekkies aren't as keen on action figures as their "Star Wars" fan counterparts, but one can find just about any character they want. Having been to Trek conventions, I recall actor Jonathan Frakes...

Director Matt Shakman has, in his decades-long directing career, amassed quite the pop culture imprimatur. He began as a child actor, having appeared as a regular on the 1988 "Growing Pains" spin-off, "Just the Ten of Us." As a kid, he had guest spots on multiple ultra-popular shows, including "Diff'rent Strokes," "Night Court," and "The Facts of Life." He retired from acting to attend college, afterward beginning a career in TV directing. Throughout the '00s, he helmed multiple single episodes of just about every popular show on TV, from "Judging Amy" and "Boston Legal" to "Six Feet Under." He directed five episodes of "Psych" and five episodes of "House" before landing the plum gig of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" in 2007. He was behind 43 episodes of that show.

Jason Isaacs is ready to take the captain’s chair on Star Trek: Discovery.

In the anticipated CBS All Access original series, Isaacs plays Gabriel Lorca, captain of the USS Discovery, and the actor is excited for Trekkies to experience the franchise's latest installment after a long wait.

Before Trekkies and other vacationers set sail for new frontiers on the Norwegian Jade’s one-of-a-kind Star Trek: The Cruise, William Shatner — who plays Captain Kirk in the iconic series — has a request for the company: Boldly go where many have gone before and cut the cruel “swim with dolphins” experiences from its itinerary.

In a letter to Norwegian Cruise Line CEO and president Frank J. Del Rio, Shatner wrote: "I’m so happy that Star Trek fans have the opportunity to climb aboard Norwegian Jade’s Star Trek: The Cruise and experience their own interstellar voyage of sorts. However, so long as your company offers “swim with dolphins” experiences, what should be a futuristic voyage will be set back light years.

Star Trek: Discovery is making history on the small screen.

CBS All Access' anticipated scripted series broke some casting news during Saturday's panel at Comic-Con -- and there's an unbelievable Rent connection.

Anthony Rapp, who plays Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery, revealed that fellow Rent alum Wilson Cruz will be joining the series as his character's love interest.

"I can announce that Wilson Cruz will play my love interest and my partner in Star Trek: Discovery," announced Rapp, who plays the first openly gay character in a Star Trek TV series. "I'm very proud of that and that he's a scientist."

It’s official: Star Trek: Discovery is the name of CBS’ all-new series, and San Diego Comic-Con brought forth the first teaser (via JoBlo) that offers a glimpse at the titular space vessel mid-flight.

Here's a terrific new trailer for For The Love of Spock, a documentary about the life and legacy of legendary Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy. His death last year rocked a lot of fans to their core, and his son Adam (the director of this doc) has put together a movie that looks like a great tribute to his father's accomplishments on and off the screen. This is going to be a must-watch movie for all Trekkies out there, and we'll all have a chance to see it when it hits theaters and On Demand platforms on September 9, 2016 — just one day after the actual 50th anniversary of the airing of the original series' first episode.

In just eight short days, Star Trek Beyond will hit theaters nationwide. Last night, Paramount held a critics screening for this sci-fi sequel. While full reviews are still forthcoming, several critics offered their early reactions on social media. For those who might be on the fence about this new adventure, which brings in a new director (Justin Lin) and writers (Simon Pegg and Doug Jung), these critics had overwhelmingly positive reactions to the film.

Following the screening last night, a number of film critics took to Twitter to reveal their early thoughts about this new Star Trek adventure. While there are no spoilers for the movie itself in the tweets below, it is revealed that the movie honored the late Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek Beyond star Anton Yelchin, who was tragically killed in a freak accident last month. However, these early reactions don't address a controversial topic that was first announced earlier this month.

Last night in La a handful of lucky critics got to attend the junket screening for Star Trek Beyond, and while full reviews are still under embargo, a handful of reactions are starting to pour out over social media. For the most part, it seems like everyone enjoyed the film, with the general consensus being that while it’s not perfect, it’s still a ton of fun.

You could argue that of course these critics will be praising Justin Lin’s entry into the franchise, as if you’re going to be attending the junket for a movie, it wouldn’t be in good taste to bash it over Twitter. And while that is somewhat true, we tend to trust a lot of these people who’ve Tweeted and it’s certainly exciting to see their enthusiasm for the new Star Trek.

The inclusion of a brief moment in the upcoming "Star Trek Beyond" which shows the regular character of Sulu to be gay became the unexpected focal point for a back-and-forth in the press last week.

What initially seemed a very well-received character moment became awkward when actor George Takei, who played Sulu on the original 1960s TV series, spoke out publicly about his unhappiness with the creative direction taken by those involved including co-writer Simon Pegg. Pegg responded quite eloquently and has now followed that up with two more lengthy quotes about the issue in a new posting.

First up, Pegg has a lengthy explanation for how Sulu can be gay in the new canon despite Takei's insistence that the character is conceived as straight - and has all to do with the new 'alternate timeline' of the films:

Simon Pegg has penned a response to criticisms over Sulu's sexuality in the forthcoming Star Trek Beyond...

Just under a week after the news broke that John Chu's Hikaru Sulu would be revealed as gay in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond film, co-screenwriter Simon Pegg has responded to complaints (including from original Sulu, George Takei) that the decision goes against canon.

Pegg scripted a thoughtful, respectful response on his personal blog, arguing that - while everyone is entitled to their own opinion - "ultimately, if we love Star Trek, we are all on the same page, we all want Gene’s idea of a tolerant inclusive, diplomatic and loving Universe to become a reality."

Pegg specifically addressed why he and director Justin Lin ultimately decided to move forward with the reveal of Sulu's Lgbt status, despite Takei's feelings on the subject, writing:
