In a story that really should have the headline “Man Arrested 14 Years Too Late For Renting Horrible Film,” a Concord, N.C. man was charged with failure to return a long overdue VHS copy of Freddy Got Fingered to a local video store. Wsoc-tv is reporting that James Meyers was pulled over by police March 23 for what was originally a faulty tail light. After the cops ran his information through the system, they asked Meyers to step out of his vehicle. The polls for this Sunday's 88th annual Academy Awards closed on Tuesday. Leonardo DiCaprio can now breathe easy, there's no more campaigning to be done for his inevitable win. One last-minute Oscars 2016 campaign argued for "Deadpool" to nab some votes. Ryan Reynolds tweeted out a "For Your Consideration" poster which was damn near perfect -- if only he had just done a cleavage push like Melissa Leo for "The Fighter."

Granted, "Deadpool" can't win any Oscars because it's not nominated for any, because it just came out last week and the 2016 winners will come from films released last year. Just because the Deadpool movie is ineligible to compete in the Oscars this year doesn't mean he won't be trying to get in on the action! Ryan Reynolds posted a message encouraging a write-in vote for the movie for the Academy Awards. He says:

The nominations that they've put on the mock poster above are pretty damn funny. The Oscars are set to air this Sunday night at 5:30 pm. I freakin' love the marketing campaign for this film! The new Suicide Squad trailer has landed, in all its Bohemian Rhapsody-spewing glory. It explains the plot to us better than previous promos, as well as showcasing more characters and closer-to-being-finished special effects. All this is understandable, considering that David Ayer’s villainous super-team movie is now only a few months away (it lands on American and UK screens alike at the start of August).

Last year I wrote an article called the Middleman. ComicMix and Bleeding Cool ran versions of the piece. Written during a time the news was full of accounts of unarmed black men and women being killed. I was also diagnosed with severe depression during that period. My article was my account of what series of events may end my life. I firmly believe as an African American man my life can be cut short by simply exercising rights that white men take for granted.

White men can say anything they want at any time without giving it a second thought. Once, Denys Cowan and I were told “carry our bags” by two white guys in a Texas airport. They were joking and thought the whole thing hilarious. If we were joking with them Denys and I would have been the first to laugh. We weren’t and we didn’t.

Leading out of an NFL playoffs-boosted 60 Minutes (12.3 mil/4.7), CBS’ Madam Secretary this Sunday drew 11.3 million total viewers and a 2.0 rating, surging to a best-since-premiere audience and a season high in the demo.

Russell Crowe took to Twitter on Monday to slam Virgin Australia for its ban on hoverboards. The actor blasted the policy, which forced him and his kids to abandon the toy at the airport. “Ridiculous @Virgin Australia. No Segway boards as luggage?” he wrote. “Too late to tell us at the airport. Kids and I offloaded. Goodbye Virgin. Never again.” The airlines official Twitter account quickly wrote back to inform Crowe that the ban is not unique to Virgin, but is common among major airlines. The account also informed him that its policies were made clear when he booked his ticket.

This week's gloriously absurd episode, The Castle, was sheer, unadulterated Fargo...

2.9 The Castle

The all-out massacre that provided the climax of this episode has been signalled since before this season had even started (an older Lou referred to it, with heavy understatement, as ‘bloody’ during season one) and was heralded by a steady increase in dread in the preceding few episodes. This palpable foreboding became almost unbearable in the first two thirds of the episode itself as a collective spirit of arrogance, manipulation and good old fashioned stupidity swirled into an inevitable orgy of violence. That final multiway outburst was simply a fantastic piece of action television; frantic, exciting, and utterly, utterly terrifying.

It was also gloriously absurd. Sheer, unadulterated Fargo. Indeed, there is a case to be made for The Castle being considered the exemplar episode of Fargo, every special component working...

Could it be – Mary and Matthew, together again?

The fan-favorite Downton Abbey couple, whose marriage came to an abrupt end when Matthew (Dan Stevens) was killed in a car crash during the final episode of season 3, reunited back in August at a special BAFTA event in the show's honor.

On the Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Smith talked about how the character he plays in his upcoming movie "Concussion" made a real difference in the world. Dr. Bennet Omalu took on the National Football League for covering up concerns that concussions could have long-term negative effects on players. And Smith wants to do make a difference, too — perhaps by getting into politics.

Content Media has hired the producer and 2015 Screen Future Leader as head of production at its film division.

Butterfield will report to Content’s president of film Jamie Carmichael and assumes immediate oversight of the present and future slate.

He will also be responsible for expanding national and international partnerships with key talent, producers, agents and publishers and identifying new opportunities for film collaborations.

“Tom brings a wealth of production experience along with many strong industry relationships, from both London and Los Angeles that aligns perfectly with our growing trans-continental business,” said Carmichael.

Like his latest feature, The Comedy, there will be no film like Rick Alverson‘s Entertainment this year. With Gregg Turkington‘s portraying his alter ego Neil Hamburger, it’s an uncomfortable, often hilarious character study, and today brings another look. Along with an extensive clip, it’s been revealed the soundtrack — which will get 1,000 vinyl pressings — will not only feature music, but comedy segments as well.

We said in our review, “Every second of the 102-minute running time is felt. We’re trapped with this character on his never-ending journey, one that makes for an unpleasant watch. Yet the pace, imagery, and Turkington’s compelling performance add up to an unnerving comedy. Entertainment is the kind of film one never has to see again, but will be better off for having seen it.”

Pop star Taylor Swift looks set to win big at the American Music Awards after scooping six nominations.

The Blank Space singer is up for Artist of the Year, Favourite Female Artist - Pop/Rock, Song of the Year for Blank Space, Collaboration of the Year for Bad Blood with Kendrick Lamar, Favourite Artist - Adult Contemporary, and Favourite Album - Pop/Rock for 1989.

She will compete against Ariana Grande and Meghan Trainor in the female category, while she will go up against her pal Ed Sheeran and Trainor for the Adult Contemporary prize.

Other nominees for Song of the Year including See You Again by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth, Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran's Thinking Out Loud and The Weeknd's Can't Feel My Face.

Mani Ratnam (b. 1955, Chennai) is that rarest of film directors nowadays: an artist capable of making exquisitely crafted, hugely entertaining, yet intelligent and provocative films on a range of social and political issues. Museum of the Moving Image is proud to present a special tribute to Ratnam featuring the director in person with a trilogy of films that follow lovers against a backdrop of Indian politics: Roja(1992), Bombay (1995), and Dil Se (1998)—the last featuring one of the most famous scenes in all of Indian cinema, the “Chaiyya Chaiyya” musical number on top of a moving train. In just a few weeks the multiplexes will give way to the big, brash Summer blockbusters. Too late for last year’s Oscars (in the Us at least) is this historical true-life romantic drama, which, oddly enough, shares several figures and settings from one of last year’s award nominees. Mr. Turner told the story of one of the nineteenth century’s most celebrated painters. Many of that film’s scenes were set at the prestigious Royal Academy of Art, where the merits of different works were vigorously debated. One of the strongest voices was that of John Ruskin, fellow artist, historian, and critic. Now comes the story that didn’t make it into the Timothy Spall biopic, a scandalous tale concerning the marriage of Mr. Ruskin and the much younger Effie Gray.
