Editor’S Note: Much was written about maverick Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton when he died early last year. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, there are several treatments of the Black Wall Street atrocity in the offing, but Singleton and Gregory Poirier had the field all to themselves when they collaborated on Rosewood, a drama woven from historic events of the 1923 Rosewood massacre in Florida, when a white mob killed black people and destroyed their town. Not many could have gotten such a movie made by a major studio back in 1997, but Singleton directed it for Warner Bros. Exclusive: Verve is becoming a full-service agency with the launch of a talent team, which will be led by top TV talent agent Sean Grumman. He is leaving WME, where he was a partner in the talent department, to join Verve where he will become the agency’s 8th partner. WME and CAA alum Grumman will bring in other talent agents to build the Verve talent team.

This marks another step in the evolution of Verve, which was launched 10 years ago by WME motion picture lit agents Bill Weinstein, Bryan Besser and Adam Levine. The agency soon expanded into TV lit, and over the last few years also built up an alternative TV operation.

“As the agency continues to grow, we are excited to add Sean’s impeccable taste and client-first approach to both the Verve culture and Verve clients with the launch of our talent team,” the Verve partners said in a joint statement.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.

To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

HBO Max launches May 27 with a whole lot of content ready to stream immediately. But throughout the nascent streamer’s first month, even more titles will be added, from HBO Max originals like “Adventure Time: Distant Lands Bmo,” to old favorites like “Amelie,” “Black Beauty” and “The Bucket List.”

Other brand-new HBO Max originals include the third season of comedy “Search Party,” and the second seasons of “Doom Patrol,” and “Esme & Roy,” all coming June 25, and on June 18, the second season of “Summer Camp Island” and the series premiere kids competition series “Karma.”

Before HBO Max even launches — it goes live May 27 — WarnerMedia is trying to lure new subscribers by revealing what’s coming next month to the streamer.

The June lineup highlights on HBO Max include all 23 seasons of “South Park,” snapped up in a multiyear, $500 million-plus deal; James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic”; and the “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” special featuring lovable robot Bmo.

HBO Max, regularly priced at $14.99 per month (the same as HBO Now), will be available on multiple platforms and distributors through deals including with Apple, Google, Charter, Xbox, PlayStation, and AT&T/DirecTV. As of this writing, however, WarnerMedia has not locked in HBO Max deals with Comcast, Roku or Amazon.

The TCA panel for the third season of FX drama Snowfall reflected on series co-creator John Singleton in the wake of his death in April at 51 and how they’re continuing to tell the story of his hometown South Central La.

“He told truthful stories about people who had been ignored, who had been depicted in a negative way,” actress Michael Hyatt said. “He told truthful stories that society would prefer to ignore; he forced a world to a see a community as their lovely truthful selves.”

“I think we feel pretty comfortable with telling the story he wanted to tell,” said Snowfall co-creator Dave Andron about the series which goes from a working-class neighborhood to a drug war zone amid the 1980s crack epidemic.

Paul Benjamin, who appeared in Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, has died. Lee announced on Instagram that the veteran actor died June 28. The cause of death was not immediately known. Benjamin was 81.

Benjamin, who played one of the three wise Brooklyn “cornermen” in Lee’s 1989 film Do the Right Thing, began his career in 1969 as a bartender in Midnight Cowboy. He went to play small roles in Sidney Lumet’s The Anderson Tapes and Born to Win, then segued into more extensive TV work later in the 1970s.

He appeared as a death row inmate in a 1988 episode of In The Heat of the Night and also in the 1994 pilot episode of ER, which led to his recurring role of homeless man Al Ervin during the next few seasons. Peak TV is coming to Austin, Texas.

The Atx Television Festival announced Thursday a robust number of television panels and screenings joining its lineup of already impressive programming. John Singleton’s upcoming crack cocaine drama “Snowfall” gets the honors of being the Opening Night screening. Other FX programs that will be featured are “The Americans” and “Fargo.” Other new shows added include HBO’s “The Leftovers” and “Girls,” in addition to “The Walking Dead” on AMC.

I speak not of John Singleton’s Rosewood, also released on February 21, 1997, but David Lynch‘s Lost Highway, whose nightmare noir plot, brutal violence (even for the auteur in question), and heavy, industrial-drenched soundtrack suggests it was made by an artist at the absolute edge of their sanity — even if its Tm-happy creator would suggest it’s, as per usual, simply a sum of ideas.
