Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Is Getting A Puppet Episode And We Already Have A First Look
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has explored a wide range of genres through its first three seasons, but the upcoming fourth season may be the boldest experimentation yet.

During the Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Paramount+ gave fans a sneak peek at one of the upcoming episodes in Strange New Worlds Season 4, and I don't think anyone was prepared for what was unveiled; a puppet-themed episode in which the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will be transformed into puppets created by the iconic Jim Henson's Creature Shop.

The puppet-themed episode is directed by Jordan Canning, who previously helmed Season 2’s “Charades” and Season 3’s “Wedding Bell Blues” and “Four-and-a-Half Vulcans.” Her experience with puppetry comes from directing episodes of Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, the musical fantasy reboot of Jim Henson’s classic 1983 series.

A very brief video teaser of the episode was shared,...

Nami Melumad (‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ composer): ‘As a huge Trekkie myself, I am always tempted to use the theme’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“As a huge Trekkie myself, I am always tempted to use the theme, to install all these little Easter eggs,” reveals “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” composer Nami Melumad. about the most exciting parts of the show’s score; the orchestral melodies that duck and dive between robust action drama and beloved old-school flourishes like the instantly recognizable original series theme. For our recent webchat she adds, “I think for all composers who work on ‘Trek’ you have to be very aware of when you’re choosing to use the ‘Star Trek’ theme. You want to bring it when it’s earned, otherwise, if you just continue to use it all the time, it loses its effectiveness. It’s like the icing on the cake, it’s like something we’re all always so looking forward to.” We talked with Melumad as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the...

Paris-based sales house Charades has acquired international sales rights to “In a Violent Nature,” the debut feature film from writer and director Chris Nash that is set to premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Section on Jan. 22.

Produced by Shudder under the streaming service’s Shudder Original banner, the film follows a vengeful undead monster as he methodically slaughters a group of campers in the wilderness after they remove a pendant from his resting grounds. Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer are also producers on “In a Violent Nature,” which is set for release in 2024.

“‘In a Violent Nature’ reminded us of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Angst,’ but most of all, it’s the discovery of an incredibly talented director,” said Charades co-founders Pierre Mazars, Yohann Comte and Carole Baraton. “We are very grateful to be working with Shudder once again with whom we are building an incredible track record of genre films from ‘Revenge,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Has A 'Spock Scale' That Should Never Go To Ten
Image
"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," currently wrapping up its second ten-episode season, has stood apart from the many other "Star Trek" shows by possessing a much lighter, more genial tone than its immediate predecessors. Since 2009, "Star Trek" has been largely dour, violent, and dark. Some of the more recent episodes of "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Star Trek: Picard" have contained many, many murders, and the Kelvin-verse movies have been hyperactive action pictures (one of them is even called "Star Trek Into Darkness"). It's telling that the better Trek shows of more recent vintage have been more or less comedy shows. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is a 30-minute animated "Star Trek" sitcom, while "Strange New Worlds" is lighter -- literally; the set is more brightly lit -- and features stories that verge on the silly. In "The Elysian Kingdom," the characters are all magically transformed into Ren Faire characters. In "Charades,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 8 Review – Under the Cloak of War
Image
This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds review contains spoilers.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 8

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has delighted in subverting our expectations about what a sci-fi adventure series like this is supposed to be and do, embracing wild shifts in tone, genre, and format from week to week and telling what should be familiar stories in fresh new ways. Season 2 has featured episodes that range from a courtroom drama (“Ad Astra Per Aspera”) to a trip into an alternate past (“Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”), a relationship comedy (“Charades”), and a heartfelt and hilarious crossover with a Star Trek animated series (“Those Old Scientists”).

Granted, “Under the Cloak of War” does make for a particularly jarring tonal shift after the Strange New Worlds meets Lower Decks episode. This installment is…well, it’s pretty darn dark, especially for a show that generally tries so valiantly...

Strange New World's Love Triangle Helps Layer Spock's Character
Image
The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 5, "Charades," now streaming on Paramount+.

One of the reasons for the vast success of Strange New Worlds is that the series takes time to explore its core cast of characters. Every episode of the show so far unpacks a deeper aspect of both long beloved and newer characters in the franchise. The show's opening conflict, Pike dealing with his mortality, sets the series up for its character-driven story style, and this trend continues with Season 2, Episode 5, "Charades." The episode further explores Spock's arc as he navigates his human side after a shuttle accident. It deals with the central love triangle in the series with Spock, his fiancée T'Pring and Nurse Chapel.

Although T'Pring only appears in one episode of The Original Series, the Season 2 opener, "Amok Time," shows that she has been betrothed to Spock since childhood,...

Spock & Chapel vs. Spock & Uhura: Which Star Trek Enterprise Couple Is Better?
Image
Spock's romantic relationships in the Star Trek reboot and Strange New Worlds highlight his struggle to control his emotions as a half-human, half-Vulcan. The romance between Spock and Uhura in the reboot films received mixed reactions from fans, while the slow build of Spock and Chapel's romance in Strange New Worlds is more well-received. Strange New Worlds provides context and confirmation of Spock's feelings for Nurse Chapel, adding depth to their relationship and recontextualizing their interactions in The Original Series.

Between J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Mr. Spock has romantic relationships with two different crew members of the Starship Enterprise. Since Leonard Nimoy's portrayal in Star Trek: The Original Series, Spock has become one of the most beloved characters in all of science fiction, but he has not had much luck when it comes to finding lasting love. Because Spock is half-human and half-Vulcan,...

Ethan Peck No Longer Relies On Leonard Nimoy To Inspire Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Spock
Image
In the second season of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," the show has proven itself worthy enough to get silly. The original series prequel has been great since day one, but its sophomore season feels especially playful, following the spirit of Gene Roddenberry's original down goofy paths as well as emotional and philosophical ones.

One of the show's goofiest paths to date came in the season 2 episode "Charades," which saw Spock (Ethan Peck) briefly turn human just before an important ceremonial meeting with his future in-laws. The episode has prompted some mixed reactions, but it's classic Trek, especially when it comes to the characterization of Spock himself. Anyone who feared that the emergence of Spock's human side might erase the things we love about him doesn't realize how much humanity Leonard Nimoy's Spock always brought to the role, even if it was via the quirk of an eyebrow.

Image

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season Two Review: A Thinking Person’s Space Opera
Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and Jess Bush in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds exudes even more of the breezy freshness of a sharply written, back-to-basics TV series than its first season. Increasingly, showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers are solving the puzzle of how to make the hoary old Star Trek format new again. A welcome shift away from rigidly serialized storytelling has greatly benefited this prequel series, allowing it to cast off the chains of cause and effect that bind together each episode of Discovery and Picard.

As in the halcyon Star Trek days, each episode of Strange New Worlds explores a new, pulpy sci-fi scenario played for thrills, yuks, or, yes, sometimes heavy-handed progressive grandstanding. The writing this season nails the middle ground between the silly-but-sometimes-smart space operatics of the original series and the warm surrogate-family vibe of The Next Generation. Plots that alternate their focal points channel that Next Gen...

Karen Black: 1939-2013
Actress Karen Black.

I grew up hearing about Karen Black as far back as I can remember. She would pop up on television and my mother would point her out as a compatriot from their college days at Northwestern University, a mixture of pride and wistfulness in her voice as the memories came back. When I finally got the opportunity to sit down with Karen during the summer of 2007, the venerable actress had turned playwright, with a well-received L.A. production of "The Missouri Waltz," a musical for which she penned the book. Black was alternately eccentric, passionate, grounded and fascinating during our chat, her obvious intelligence shining through the entire proceedings.

“Black brings to all her roles a freewheeling combination of raunch and winsomeness,” Time magazine wrote about her in 1975. “Sometimes she is kittenish. At other times she has an overripe quality that makes her look like the kind...

Catching up with... Richmond Riedel
Richmond Riedel has worked the editing bay with directorial greats like Michael Mann, Peter Berg, and many others. He’s also a prolific screenwriter, having had quite a few scripts optioned and purchased over the years. One of those scripts eventually became Charades (1998), starring Erica Eleniak and Karen Black. This year Riedel finally took the leap into becoming a feature film director himself, and after a great festival run his film Target Practice hits DVD this week. Riedel took some time to talk to Paste about Friday Night Lights (the film and the TV show), editing with Berg and Mann,...
