Quincy Jones’ Cause Of Death Revealed
Image
After the Egot died at age 91 earlier this month, Quincy Jones‘ cause of death has been determined.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health revealed in Jones’ death certificate that he died of pancreatic cancer, with no other contributing factors, according to TMZ.

Jones’ publicist Arnold Robinson previously announced that he died on Sunday, Nov. 3 at his Bel-Air home.

“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” said Jones’ family in a statement. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”

The musician, composer, producer and songwriter was behind such Michael Jackson albums as Thriller, Off the Wall (1980), Thriller (1982) and Bad (1987), as well as decades of work with Frank Sinatra, conducting his and Count Basie’s It Might as...

‘Saturday Night Live’ Pays Tribute To Quincy Jones
Image
Quincy Jones, who died earlier this week, received a tribute from Saturday Night Live.

The venerable NBC show paid tribute to the musical legend, who died at the age of 91, with a card at the end of the show.

Jones had previously hosted SNL in February 1990. He was coming off the back of promoting his Back on the Block album and turned up with a lot of musical guests including Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel and Quincy D III.

The 10 musical performers Jones brought with him is believed to have been the record for the show, one that stands to this day.

He also paid tribute to Nelson Mandela, who was set to be released from prison hours after the show, during his monologue.

Fun fact: Dana Carvey, who did an impression of Elon Musk on tonight’s show, was in the cast when Jones hosted.

Jones was a musician,...

Charlie Vickers in Le Seigneur des anneaux : Les Anneaux de pouvoir (2022)
Amazon Prime Video New Releases: September 2022
Charlie Vickers in Le Seigneur des anneaux : Les Anneaux de pouvoir (2022)
With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).

Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

The Criterion Channel’s September 2021 Lineup Includes Jia Zhangke, Margaret, Center Stage & More
Next month’s Criterion Channel selection is here, and as 2021 winds down further cements their status as our single greatest streaming service. Off the top I took note of their eight-film Jia Zhangke retro as well as the streaming premieres of Center Stage and Malni. And, yes, Margaret has been on HBO Max for a while, but we can hope Criterion Channel’s addition—as part of the 63(!)-film “New York Stories”—opens doors to a more deserving home-video treatment.

Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland Trilogy, Bruno Dumont’s Joan of Arc duology, and Criterion’s editions of Irma Vep and Flowers of Shanghai also mark major inclusions—just a few years ago the thought of Hou’s masterpiece streaming in HD was absurd.

I could implore you not to sleep on The Hottest August and Point Blank and Variety and In the Cut or, look, so many Ernst Lubitsch movies,...

On the short list of post- classic-era comedies I can see over and over again is this beautifully executed Bill Murray crime comedy, which he co-directed. The fact that its basically silly main joke is whining about New York City doesn’t keep it from being hilarious from one end to the other. When it comes time for a getaway to the airport, Manhattan might as well be an impenetrable maze, an island of doom. Geena Davis and Randy Quaid give excellent comedy support, while Jason Robards holds up the police dragnet end of the story. The disc has no special extras but Murray’s movie is as satisfying as ever.

John Cleese, Steve Martin, and Goldie Hawn in Escapade à New York (1999)
‘An American Pickle’ Film Review: Seth Rogen Gets Sentimental in Mild Fish-Out-of-Water Comedy
John Cleese, Steve Martin, and Goldie Hawn in Escapade à New York (1999)
From “The Out-of-Towners” to “Splash” to “Coming to America” to “Enchanted” and beyond, there’s a long history of movies in which waifs, innocents, outsiders and fish out of water gaze at the streets of New York City with uncomprehending awe and then try to make their way through a landscape that seems as foreign to them as the dark side of the moon. And with Seth Rogen joining that roster with “An American Pickle,” you have to figure that his entry will be among the goofiest, broadest and loopiest of the bunch.

It’s not. Despite Rogen in dual roles as an Eastern European peasant who awakens in Brooklyn after 100 years in a vat of pickles and as his great grandson, a freelance app developer, this is a surprisingly subdued and sentimental riff on Rip Van Winkle meets “Being There.” You might find yourself unexpectedly touched by it, but...

Neil Simon movies: 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best, include ‘The Goodbye Girl,’ ‘The Odd Couple,’ ‘The Sunshine Boys’
Neil Simon at an event for Par effraction (2006)
It makes sense that screenwriter and playwright Neil Simon, who pretty much defined American humor on stage, screen and TV for several decades until his death 2018 at the age of 91, knew how to turn humiliation, heartache, opposites-attract relationships, adultery, marital tensions, likable losers, glib nostalgia and modern insecurities into red, white and blue hilarity. What else would you expect from a Jewish boy from the Bronx who was born on the Fourth of July in 1927, right before the Great Depression?

Film Feature: HollywoodChicago.com Remembers Neil Simon
Chicago – Writer Neil Simon was an American treasure, and created humor that anchored his often neurotic characters into our consciousness. From his early days in 1950s TV (“Your Show of Shows”) to winning a 1990s Pulitzer Prize for “Lost in Yonkers,” he refined and produced “the laugh.” Simon died on August 26th, 2018, at age 91, in New York City.

Neil Simon was born in the Bronx on the 4th of July, and got his nickname “Doc” at DeWitt Clinton High School in NYC. After the Army Reserves and a little college, he partnered with his brother Danny in the 1950s to write radio scripts and eventually “Your Show of Shows.” His first play was “Come Blow Your Horn” in 1961, which established him in New York theater. The hits kept coming, and during the 1966 season, Simon had four shows running simultaneously – “The Odd Couple,...

Broadway Dimming Lights to Honor Neil Simon
Broadway will dim its lights in honor of Neil Simon.

The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, librettist, lyricist, producer, and theatre owner and operator died Sunday at the age of 91. His credits include “Lost in Yonkers,” “Brighton Beach Memoirs,” “The Sunshine Boys,” and “The Odd Couple.”

“Neil Simon’s plays are a testament to the human experience: He made audiences laugh, cry, and think. No other American playwright has had as many performances or as many shows in production simultaneously on Broadway,” said Thomas Schumacher, chairman of the Broadway League. “The outpouring of accolades and personal memories being shared since his death are a tribute to how deeply he influenced our culture and touched the lives of literally millions of theatergoers.”

The lights on the Great White Way will go dark on Aug. 30 at exactly 6:45 p.m. Et for one minute. Simon’s dozens of works include “Barefoot in the Park,...

Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer in Larguées (2017)
Exclusive: Amy Schumer's Guide to 5 Essential Goldie Hawn Movies to Watch Ahead of 'Snatched'
Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer in Larguées (2017)
Snatched may be Amy Schumer's favorite Goldie Hawn movie, but that's mostly because it was, as she's said, "a complete dream come true" to film with one of her idols. "I threw my arms around her -- I don't know if this is weird or not -- and I was just like, 'I love you so much,'" Schumer told Et of being on set with Hawn. "Getting to see Goldie every day and be on camera together was the best part. We fell in love...but [also] the movie's amazing."

Fair enough. But it was Hawn's illustrious filmography -- spanning 50 years and including an Academy Award win for Cactus Flower in 1969 -- that inspired Schumer to try to entice her back to the big screen, marking Hawn's film in 15 years. (Her last was 2002's The Banger Sisters.) Ahead of Snatched's release on Friday, we had Schumer list her five must-watch Goldie Hawn movies.

13 British comedy stars lured to Hollywood in the 1990s
Hollywood went hunting for lots of British comedy talent in the 1990s - and lured the likes of Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson...

For some reason, Hollywood fell in love with British actors again in the 1990s. Sparked by Alan Rickman's turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard at the back end of the 1980s, many movie villains were either Brits, or in the case of Cliffhanger, John Lithgow taking on the mannerisms of a British antagonist.

Yet in particular, Hollywood went recruiting British comedy talent, with faces then mainly - but not exclusively - known for their small screen work getting roles of various sizes in Hollywood productions. Here are some who racked up the air miles - starting with the man who arguably became one of the most successful...
