Whitney Houston Scored An Impressive Payday For Denzel Washington's Underrated Christmas Movie
Image
As a singer, Whitney Houston needs no introduction. As a Christmas movie star, though, she may come across as somewhat more obscure. Despite this, she found success on that avenue of life as well. Not only did she star in the surprisingly good 1996 Christmas film "The Preacher's Wife," but she also did so opposite the great Denzel Washington, and earned plenty of money for her efforts.

A remake of the 1947 film "The Bishop's Wife" (itself based on the 1928 book of the same name), "The Preacher's Wife" is a fantasy comedy-drama about Henry Biggs (Courtney B. Vance), a stressed-out reverend who's going through a crisis of faith while his church is standing in the way of a real estate mogul's (Gregory Hines) construction project. Fortunately, an angel named Dudley (Washington) and Biggs' wife Julia (Houston) are there to support the preacher. Unfortunately, it seems that the two are also falling in love.

This 36-Year-Old Disney Movie Doesn't Deserve Its Low Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Quick Links What Is Oliver & Company About? Why Did Oliver & Company Perform Poorly? Oliver & Company Deserves Better Than a "Rotten" Score Oliver & Company is Disney's forgotten gem, offering a fresh take on the classic tale of Oliver Twist. Despite its low Rotten Tomatoes score, the film blends nostalgia with a message of diversity and family. The characters in Oliver & Company are complex and relatable, showcasing a different side of Disney storytelling.

Disney is full of hidden gems. As a company with more than a century of history, there are so many movies to explore. While its well-known films like Frozen, Snow White, Mickey Mouse and Cinderella are now mainstream, before the Disney renaissance era, a long-forgotten film that revisits a classic English tale shows a very different side of Disney. With a couple of fan-favorite singalongs, a group of dogs, a cat and a few humans, this 36-year-old film has aged well.

This Critically Panned Fairy Tale Retelling Deserves Another Chance
Image
Quick Links Cinderella's Music Lacks Coherence The Plot of Cinderella Abandons Its Fairy Tale Origins Cinderella's Comedy Makes It Worth a Watch The music in Cinderella lacks coherence with its bizarre song choices. The plot abandons the fairy tale's iconic elements and is unsatisfying. Cinderella's comedy, with clever writing and fun performances, makes it worth a watch.

Amazon and Sony's Cinderella, starring Camilla Cabello, received massive negative feedback from the moment its trailers began coming out, and largely for good reason. For one, its marketing resulted in the infamous video where James Corden held up LA traffic while dressed as a rat. Furthermore, the movie doesn't succeed at much of what it attempts. It offers little for musical fans, as a jukebox musical with bizarre and frequently nonsensical song choices, and little for fans of the Cinderella story, as its clumsy and remedial feminist message only results in...

Tangled star Zachary Levi Says Timothee Chalamet Should Play Flynn Rider in Live-Action Remake
Image
In a year brimming with news about Disney sequels and live-action remakes, it seems only fitting that Zachary Levi the actor who became a household name after voicing the charming rogue, Flynn Rider, in the 2010 animated classic Tangled has chimed in on the possibility of a live-action adaptation. Levi, who delivered an endearing performance as Flynn, also revealed who he thinks would be the ideal candidate to step into his iconic characters shoes.

During the premiere of his new film, Harold and the Purple Crayon, Levi spoke to Entertainment Tonight and mused about the role of Flynn Rider. The actor, who has become synonymous with Flynns charm and acknowledged the fact that he might be a tad too mature to reprise the role and playfully suggested that Timothe Chalamet would be an excellent choice.

"I mean, he's already getting every other job but probably Timothee Chalamet? Unfortunately I feel like...

The Netflix TV show centers around the Bridgerton family, consisting of the matriarch Violet and her eight children Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. Image
Major film and TV productions are currently on hold due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, but the New York theater scene is still as active as ever. A new Broadway season is upon us, and there are five musicals set to open this fall. Will they contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below, we give you a preview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast and creative teams, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Merrily We Roll Along”

The first Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical adaptation of George S. Brandy’s Cinderella Makes Long-Awaited Return in First Look at New Disney+ Musical
Image
The glass slippers still fit Brandy. The singer’s long-awaited return as Cinderella in a new Disney television movie has been given an official first look, courtesy of footage from the set of “Descendants: Rise of Red.” Brandy is reprising the role of Cinderella 26 years after becoming the princess opposite Whitney Houston’s Fairy Godmother in the 1997 television movie “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.”

The set footage also confirmed that “Descendants: Rise of Red” will feature the return of Paolo Montalban, who played Brandy’s Prince Charming in the 1997 movie, which was groundbreaking for its multicultural casting. Charming is now king, and Cinderella is queen.

Variety confirmed last November that Brandy boarded the “Descendants” movie as Cinderella. At the time, the movie musical had the working title of “The Pocketwatch.” The film centers on the relationship between Red (Kylie Cantrall), the rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe...

How Debra Martin Chase Rebooted Her Career After Three Decades in Hollywood
Image
Seven years ago, pioneering film and TV producer Debra Martin Chase was thinking about leaving Hollywood.

The first Black woman to ink an overall deal at any studio, she’d produced such genre-defining hits as “The Princess Diaries,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” While getting projects about women and people of color off the ground was never easy, suddenly prospects were stagnant.

“It was at a point where Hollywood just wasn’t interested,” she tells Variety, reflecting on the career crossroads from the living room of her apartment in New York, where she lives while her popular CBS series “The Equalizer” is in production. “You’d talk to people — particularly white men — and their eyes would just glaze over.”

As Martin Chase approached 30 years in the business, her passion was slipping away. She thought, “Maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me:...

Here's How to Watch "Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration"
Image
It's a tale as old as time, but it's back with a twist! "Beauty and the Beast" has been adapted in a new format to mark over three decades since the release of Disney's animated film. Titled "Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration," the new ABC special coincides with the 30th anniversary of the timeless fantasy's historic Academy Award nomination for best picture, the first time an animated movie had been tapped in that category.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, who helmed "Crazy Rich Asians," the reimagination of Disney's beloved story sees H.E.R. (aka Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) putting her spin on the lead character of Belle. In an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip shared with Popsugar, the singer, songwriter, and actor dishes on stepping into her role.

"I'm so honored to be able to play a Disney princess, because who doesn't want to play a Disney princess?" she says. "And, of course,...

Brandy Will Return To The Role Of Cinderella In Disney+ Descendants Prequel The Pocketwatch
Image
Whitney Houston was right: "Impossible things are happening every day." The first Black woman to ever play Cinderella on screen and the Vocal Bible herself, Brandy will be wearing her glass slippers once again as she reprises the role for the "Descendants" prequel film, "The Pocketwatch" for Disney+, according to Variety. Brandy first played the role in the 1997 "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" made-for-tv movie. At the time of release, the film was the most expensive made-for-tv film in history, a delightfully zany adaptation of the classic tale featuring catchy songs, an unbelievable costume design from Ellen Mirojnick, and a racially diverse cast that was a revolution.

"The Pocketwatch" takes place in the ridiculously popular "The Descendants" franchise, which focuses on the children of some of Disney's most memorable characters. The story centers on Red (Kyle Cantrall), the rebellious teenage daughter of the Queen of Hearts (Rita Ora), who crosses paths...

Lily James movies and TV shows ranked: 10 greatest roles worst to best
Image
Over the past decade, Lily James has distinguished herself by building one of the most varied resumes as any film actor her age. After getting her start on British television, James first became known to American audiences in 2012 when she joined the cast of “Downton Abbey” as the love-struck Lady Rose MacClare, a role that earned James two Screen Actors Guild Awards as a member of the show’s ensemble cast.

The actress quickly followed up that television triumph with one on the big screen in the title role of Disney’s live-action “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, which clearly proved her appeal to audiences of all ages. One of the most reliable screen presences in recent years, James showed enormous range in choosing her projects, from such crowd pleasers as “Baby Driver” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” to more intimate films as “The Dig” and “Little Woods,...

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio Vs. Robert Zemeckis' Pinocchio: What You Need To Know About Both Films
Image
There's a strange thing that happens in Hollywood more often than one might imagine. Two projects get greenlit that aren't just similar, but pull from nearly the same source material. Though this often happens in early stages of projects, like when a wild story suddenly becomes a hot commodity, it's rare that both versions actually end up being born into the world at the same time.

Yet there are times when years of brainstorming, production, and post-production somehow ultimately align, leading to near-simultaneous releases that look intentionally competitive, even if they're not. This is what seems to be happening with "Pinocchio," a classic story that's somehow receiving two very distinct adaptations this fall. While one will debut in September and remake a family film we know and love, the other hits theaters in November and pull inspiration from the darker Italian novel of the same name. Let's dig into the...

Click here to read the full article.

Whoopi Goldberg revealed the various ways she helped create the memorable comedy and royal look of Queen Constantina in the 1997 TV movie Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella.

Appearing as part of ABC’s special edition of 20/20 in Cinderella: The Reunion, which aired Tuesday night, the actress, comedian and View co-host opened up about how she delivered one of the film’s funniest (and most regal) performances.

During a segment discussing Goldberg’s casting, she expressed that she based the character on herself, and was even behind her signature vocal characterization of answering with exasperated, shocked or faux hurt reactions.

“I wanted her to be me in a dress. A little silly, a little fun. And I gave her a distinction,” Goldberg said. “She doesn’t finish sentences, she makes sounds.”

After being described as the “soul of the production,” Goldberg also revealed that the very real,...

How to Watch the ‘Cinderella’ Reunion With Brandy and Whoopi Goldberg: Is It Streaming?
Le monde merveilleux de Disney (1997)
ABC is bringing fans a lovely night this week, with a reunion of “Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” coming on Tuesday. But if you miss it live, don’t worry. It’s definitely possible to watch it again elsewhere.

Back in 1997, “Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” came as part of “The Wonderful World of Disney.” In it, pop star Brandy starred as Cinderella, with Whitney Houston as her fairy godmother, marking the first Black Cinderella and Fairy Godmother ever. For a long time, it was, well, impossible, to watch it anywhere, as it wasn’t streaming. But, in February of last year, Disney rectified that. The special will reunite some of the original members of its heavy-hitting cast, including Brandy, Whoopi Goldberg, Paolo Montalban, Victor Garber,...

The story follows a nanny who comes to work for a bankers unhappy family in pre-World War I England.

Brandy Reminisces on Working With Her Idol and Mentor, Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston and Brandy Norwood in La Légende de Cendrillon (1997)
Brandy Norwood will always be a '90s icon for her hit show Moesha, but one of her most iconic moments from the era has to be her portrayal of Cinderella in Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1997 TV movie. Not only did she hold her own alongside music legend Whitney Houston, but she also made history as the first African-American actress to take on the role. I recently spoke with the star, and she indulged me with a little nostalgia about her experience as a Disney princess - and what it was really like having her idol as her fairy godmother. While the '90s were filled with incredible music, Brandy adamantly expressed that no artist can hold a candle to Whitney. "Her voice just did something to my spirit," she recalled. "I was just so honored to play the role of Cinderella, and then the bonus of working with my...

Bww Interview: Ted Chapin Discusses Cinderella, Sound Of Music Tours, Future R&H Broadway Shows
For generations, Rodgers amp Hammerstein's Cinderella existed only as a beloved television movie. First with a live broadcast in 1957 starring Julie Andrews then in 1965 with Lesley Ann Warren, a version which was regularly re-broadcast into the 90s which I grew up watching and finally in 1997 with Brandy in the title role and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. However, in 2013, over 55 years after its first broadcast, led by Broadway's favorite princess Laura Osnes and crowned prince Santino Fontana, RampH 's Cinderella took its first Broadway bow. The show earned nine Tony nominations, running for nearly two years. Now, Cinderella's First National Tour sets up shop in its own little corner at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, with performances beginning on Tuesday night.
