Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi

Aap Jaisa Koi Review: A Clash of Tradition and Modernity
Image
The film introduces us to Shrirenu Tripathi, a 42-year-old Sanskrit professor residing in the industrial city of Jamshedpur. His life is a quiet study in loneliness; a socially awkward man steeped in traditional values, he is a source of gentle mockery for his students and a subject of concern for his family, who are keen to see him married.

Shrirenu embodies a brand of Indian masculinity rooted in conservative ideals and a pronounced lack of confidence in the presence of women. His world is constructed from ancient texts and provincial expectations, leaving him ill-equipped for the complexities of contemporary romance.

His proposed counterpart is Madhu Bose, a younger, vivacious French teacher from the culturally rich city of Kolkata. She is presented as his complete opposite: modern, assertive, and a product of a liberal, artistic Bengali family. Their story begins through the very traditional channel of an arranged match, immediately establishing a dynamic of opposites.

Madhubala's mesmerising performances masked lifetime of pain and suffering
Image
Her incandescent beauty, innocent sensuality, and effervescent persona still send hearts aflutter and earned her the sobriquet of “Venus of Indian films”, but Madhubala’s enigmatic and beguiling smile and charm masked a lifetime of pain and suffering.

Madhubala, who passed away on this day (February 23) in 1969, earned tributes that have rarely been matched, leave alone surpassed.

She acted in a film named after her when she was not even midway through her career, was being copied or parodied when she was still acting, and is possibly the only Indian, film or otherwise, with a song dedicated to her being played at the Olympics.

She was also compared to the near-contemporary Marilyn Monroe – the two would pass away within a few years of each other, both aged 36, but did not welcome this as she did not consider herself a sex symbol.

Performances as the captivating but star-crossed Anarkali of “Mughal-e-Azam...

‘Chura liya hai tumne’: Asha Bhosle & R D Burman’s melodious journey, discordant end
Image
Intrinsically talented, both, separately and jointly, gave a new direction to Hindi film music. But to achieve this, Asha Bhosle and Rahul Dev Burman had to surmount a major “hurdle” – creating a new identity distinct from their illustrious and established kin: elder sibling Lata Mangeshkar and father Sachin Dev Burman.

And both succeeded – with a combination of luck, support, their own undeniable virtuosity, and above all, their first joint effort.

AshaBhosle – who is still going strong at 90, having worked with four generations of music composers from O P Nayyar to A R Rehman – added a sensuous allure and element of forthrightness for the Hindi film heroine, without becoming risque or boisterous, even as Burman adroitly used pop and jazz to good effect in electrifying film music – bringing the age of Elvis Presley and the Beatles to India.

Rejected at a trial for a film in 1947 as the sound recording engineer...

Jaidev: Composer who got a new lease of life for his composition through ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ – अभी न जाओ छोड़कर
Image
Romantics are gushing through the ears and the trigger is Dharmendra crooning – अभी न जाओ छोड़कर – to Shabana Azmi which culminates in an impromptu kiss in ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’. The original song from Dev Anand’s Hum Dono still is a swan song for the lovers especially when the lady in question is planning to leave, while the boy has the innate desire that she stays, and this yearn is not relegated to teenagers. It continues to reverberate through the ages ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ has amplified it.

I am reminded of a party that we were attending in Ranchi. It was around midnight and as the guests started walking away, I snatched the mike and started singing this evergreen song and those who had taken their cars out of the parking lots dumped it, came back and we kept on singing...

Mesmerising Madhubala and her magical spell
Image
She had a film named after her even before she hit her career’s peak, was being parodied when she was still active, and is the only Indian film actress who has a song to her played at the Olympics. That was the spell of Madhubala, whose angelic features, beguiling yet enigmatic smile, and incandescent beauty, coupled with her restrained but undeniable talent, made her part of some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films.

While she is imprinted in the hearts and minds of film-watchers as the winsome, entrancing but star-crossed Anarkali of “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), as the entrancing nightclub singer in “Howrah Bridge”, and for her exuberant, effusive, and elfin charm in romantic comedies “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958), “Jhumroo” (1961) and “Half Ticket” (1962), she left her mark across film genres from ghost/gothic stories to comic crime capers to film noir, beyond the usual romantic dramas in a relatively short career.

Spicing up film titles with intriguing spins
Image
Mumbai, Feb 26: Bollywood filmmakers never miss a chance to sensationalize, to grab a few extra eyeballs. This year, makers seem to have hit the idea of quirky titles. Liger to Looop Lapeta, Pagglait to Bell Bottom, and Gangubai Kathiawadi to Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, names of films really take an unusual turn this year.

Quirky titles bordering on being tongue-twisters, of course are not new to Bollywood. In the past, the industry made Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Badhti Ka Naam Dadhi, Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli, Allah Meherban Toh Gadha Pahelwan and Dhoti Lota Aur Chowpatty.

Here are some recent titles that render the films in question a dash of added audience interest.

Liger

Imagine a cross breed between a Lion and Tiger! That's Vijay Deverakonda for you - at least in spirit, going by the title of his next film. The poster and title created a frenzy on social media upon launch.

Bombay Velvet Music Review
I’ll preface this review with an admission: I played the clarinet in the school band for about two years, so you can understand why I fell so hard for the Bombay Velvet soundtrack as a band nerd. Anurag Kashyap’s magnum opus takes the audience to 1960s Bombay, which is emerging as a metropolis that’s teeming with gangsters, film journalists, femme fatales, and underdogs. Kashyap recruited Amit Trivedi for this fantastic album, that’s as nuanced as it is danceable. Trivedi teamed up with The City of Prague Big Band, and Mickey McCleary for the album that merges jazz standards, classic Bollywood, and swing with such seamless ease.

The album starts off with the rollicking, Aam Hindustani, a 9-minute gem that hooks you in with a terrific prelude. From the opening clarinets that segue into the madcap horns and trumpets, Trivedi goes for the carnival-esque sound that would...

Shah Rukh Khan
Revealed Shah Rukh Khan - Rohit Shetty collaborate on Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi
Shah Rukh Khan
After the blockbuster Chennai Express, it's an unofficial remake of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi for superstar Shah Rukh Khan and superstar-director Rohit Shetty. The film, which goes on the floors in March, will star Shah Rukh Khan and Varun Dhawan as brothers. A source in the know reveals, "The basic plot is like Satyen Bose's Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and also shades of Mukul Anand's Hum. Shah Rukh's role is a mix of Ashok Kumar in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Bachchan Saab in Hum. Shah Rukh Khan plays the Ashok Kumar role of a seeming misogynist while Varun Dhawan playing the flirty sibling is just the opposite. Like Kishore Kumar in Chalti Ka Gaadi, Varun Dhawan has a love interest, Kriti Sanon (who steps into, ahem, Madhubala's role). Varun keeps teasing and challenging his brother about his lack of interest in women...until at mid-point...

Among the films in the past which used car as the central theme was Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi. The latest edition in this category is Ferrari Ki Sawari which is the offering from Vidhu Vinod Chopra after stupendously...
