The whole premise of the Troggs’ 1966 hit “Wild Thing” is about this socially disaffected guy, benumbed to sympathy, empathy, and even his own ego — utterly skeptical of any personal joy, a real Freudian basket case — until he experiences a sexual awakening so subtle that he questions his own motivations. Of course, you’ve heard the song a billion times already and that description oversells the simplicity of the song’s beer tumbler–shaking riff and songwriter Chip Taylor’s troglodyte lyrics. Well, you got lucky, babe, when Tom Petty found...

It’s a little more than a decade since Benmont Tench released his debut solo LP, You Should Be So Lucky, but for the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist, it feels like a lifetime ago. There’s been a lot of joy in the intervening years, most notably his 2015 marriage to Alice Carbone Tench, and the birth of their daughter, Catherine. But he also endured the sudden death of Petty just seven days after the conclusion of their 2017 tour, and a recent battle with oral cancer.

Chaos: The Manson Murders (Errol Morris)
Over half a century later, what new information can be gleaned from the nights of August 9 and 10, 1969? Tom O’Neill and Dan Piepenbring’s riveting (if convoluted) book Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties––released in June 2019, between the Cannes premiere and theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino’s cathartic rewrite of that history––argues that while all the evidence of the murders has been gleaned, there’s a complex and knotty web of conspiracies for the motivations, some more plausible than others. To pare down the 528-page book to its most overarching theory, it postulates Manson may have been allowed (and perhaps even directed) by the CIA to concoct a reign...

Mike Campbell was always more than just the deeply gifted guitarist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers — songs from “Refugee” to “You Wreck Me,” not to mention Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer,” began with music he wrote. In his essential, vividly told new autobiography, Heartbreaker: A Memoir, due March 18, Campbell (now the leader of his own band, the Dirty Knobs) offers many new revelations about his relationship with Petty and his musical journey.

Yahoo reports that New Mexico police have said that the causes of death are under investigation, “but they do not believe foul play is a factor at this time.” Of course, there’s a lot of speculation going around that the cause of death may be carbon monoxide poisoning, but nothing has been confirmed as of right now.

Tom Petty’s Cameron Crowe-Directed ‘Heartbreakers Beach Party’ Film Headed to Paramount+ (Exclusive)
The early-’80s documentary “Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party,” which had a one-weekend-only release in cinemas as a theatrical event in October, is set to have its streaming premiere exclusively on Paramount+ beginning March 11 in the U.S. and Canada, the service announced Tuesday.
The Cameron Crowe-directed film will debut the following day, March 12, in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, France, Italy and Germany.
When the film rolled out on big screens last fall, it was touted as being the first time this subject of Petty (and Crowe) lore was being seen — at least legitimately — by audiences since it first premiered, with little fanfare at the time, on MTV in February 1983. Originally shot around the time of the release of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ “Long After Dark” album, the film was restored from its 16mm source and augmented by about 20 minutes of previously unseen bonus content, including...

Cameron Crowe’s 1983 directorial debut Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party is heading to cinemas for two nights only. Details on this within.
Cameron Crowe, former Rolling Stone journalist, made his directorial debut with the little seen documentary Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party. He would go on to make classics like Say Anything, Jerry Maguire and the autobiographical Almost Famous.
The synopsis for Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party, a documentary Crowe made as his directorial debut in 1983, reads as follows:
In 2024, the long-thought lost 16mm reels of Tom Petty in Cameron Crowe’s first film, “Heartbreakers Beach Party”, were finally found. The classic ‘80s documentary captures Tom Petty and the band in 1982-1983 as they finish, promote, and tour around the “Long After Dark” album (their final with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine). After its initial airing on MTV in 1983, the film was deemed too experimental and abruptly pulled from the air.

Tom Petty: Heartbreakers Beach Party, the semi-lost 1983 directorial debut of future Oscar winner Cameron Crowe, aired only once at 2:00 Am on MTV. Now a fully-restored edition with 20 additional minutes of extra footage is coming to theaters for the first time for two nights, October 17th and October 20th. The 20th would have been Petty’s 74th birthday.
“Heartbreakers Beach Party occupies a special place in my heart,” Crowe said in a statement. “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers leaned into the making of the film with a kind of hilarious music-filled honesty that still feels fresh forty years later. It was also my first experience as a director.”
He added, “I’m so happy we’re bringing it back in all its reckless glory. The fact that it was yanked from MTV after only one airing at 2:00 Am just shows that it was indeed an outlandish feast for fans in all the best ways.

When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell heard about plans for country greats like Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, George Strait, Chris Stapleton, and Dierks Bentley to honor the band’s music on the covers collection Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, he felt it made perfect sense, even though they were a rock band at their core.
“We all grew up in the South and were seeped in the music of Hank Williams and George Jones that we heard on the radio,” he tells Rs.

Palm Royale got a lot of mileage out of its impressive cast, notably the women. But Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and even the legendary Carol Burnett needed help to create the titular Palm Beach private club and 1960s-set high society that Maxine Dellacorte Simmons (Wiig) spends the first season trying to infiltrate. That shared assignment fell to a collaborative group including creator and showrunner Abe Sylvia, director and producer Tate Taylor, set decorator Ellen Reede and composer Jeff Toyne. With 10 episodes of the lush Apple TV+ comedy in the books, that foursome joined Wiig, also a producer, and supporting player Josh Lucas (Maxine’s complicated husband, Douglas) for a discussion about the lengths they went to in crafting the show — breaking and entering, whale calls and all.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2026, and there’s already talk of a tribute show to mark the occasion. But Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell isn’t sure he wants to do it.
“The management said that if we did it, we’d get the original band back together, have some guest singers, and maybe just do a couple of shows,” Campbell tells Rolling Stone. “But then I always throw my hands up and go, ‘I can’t think about that. I’m not ready to go back and do that.

In 1974, Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, and the rest of their band Mudcrutch entered Leon Russell’s the Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to record their first demo tape with producer Denny Cordell. It was a crucial moment that led to the formation of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers two years later. In late April of this year, Campbell returned to the studio for the first time in 50 years.

Beyond the vast windows of Palm Beach’s iconic Breakers resort, the ocean sparkled as women in designer florals paraded under the lobby’s vaulted, hand-frescoed ceilings. They were headed to network with Martha Stewart and Tommy Hilfiger and swap Hermès and Gucci purses for charity at a $600-per-ticket “Old Bags” luncheon.
Later, many of them joined the daily flock gathered poolside at the historic Colony Hotel, sipping cocktails served by young men in pink shirts. Apart from the rose-hued hotel’s interior update, including a new Goop-designed bungalow, similar scenes could have unfolded a half-century earlier — which is why the new Apple TV+ show Palm Royale, set in 1969, doesn’t seem very dated. The characters played by Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Allison Janney could have easily mingled among this crowd, and when the show incorporated shots of The Breakers, the only thing they had to adjust for historical accuracy was the cars.

Dolly Parton honored Tom Petty with a gorgeous cover of his 1985 song, “Southern Accents,” which will appear on the upcoming tribute compilation Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
“Southern Accents” is a tender ballad about Southern roots and a down-on-his luck Florida orange-picker. Parton stays faithful to the original, adding her own country twang, and juicing the poignancy further with a music video filled with old archival footage of Petty.
“I was fortunate enough to get to know Tom over the years,” Parton said in a statement.

Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared on the “Inside of You” podcast and revealed she once had to pull a filmmaker aside on set because he was telling her she had to be sexier. Jennifer Love Hewitt expressed keen interest in reprising her role in a potential I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. Hewitt is aware of her age but won't let it deter her from returning to the horror franchise. There is hope for a revival of the franchise with Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. interested in returning, similar to the recent revival of the Scream series.
In 1997, I Know What You Did Last Summer became a slasher sensation, earning $125 million dollars at the box office against a budget of just $17 million. Its success paved the way for a theatrical sequel in 1998, and a direct-to-video installment in 2006 that featured all new cast members, and has gone largely forgotten about. 25 years since she appeared in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Jennifer Love Hewitt has expressed keen interest in reprising her role of Julie James in a potential legacy...

Actor Peter Spellos had over 150 screen acting and vocal performance credits to his name, but genre fans are most likely to remember him as Orville Ketchum from the slasher movie Sorority House Massacre II and its companion piece Hard to Die, as well as the brief appearance he made as the character Tracy’s father in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare. Outside of horror, he’s best known for providing the voice of Sky-Byte in 39 episodes of the animated series Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Unfortunately, we have very sad news to share today, as it has been confirmed that Spellos has passed away at age 69 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

If you read that headline and thought to yourself, "Who the hell is Nate Bargatze?", then allow me to direct you over to Netflix to check out his stand-up specials "The Tennessee Kid" and "The Greatest Average American," or head over to Amazon Prime Video to watch "Hello World" from just earlier this year. They're all hilarious, and they'll make you fall in love with him.
Over the past few years, Nate Bargatze has become a new favorite on the stand-up scene thanks to his wry delivery and sensible yet hilarious perspectives. Making him significantly more appealing to a broader audience than some of the other big stand-up comics out there is the fact that Bargatze is one of the rare comedians who works clean and doesn't rely on any profanity, vulgarity, or blue material.
