The Criterion Channel’s May Lineup Includes The Ghost Writer, Spike Lee, Kathryn Bigelow, Jia Zhangke & More
Image
We’ve always loved setting trends at The Film Stage and are accordingly chuffed that, nine months after we screened a 35mm print at the Roxy, Roman Polanski’s late-career triumph The Ghost Writer comes to the Criterion Channel in next month’s Coastal Thrillers, a series that does what it says on the tin: The Lady from Shanghai, Key Largo, The Long Goodbye, The Fog, and the other best film of 2010, Scorsese’s Shutter Island. It pairs well with Noir and the Blacklist featuring films by Joseph Losey, Fritz Lang, Jules Dassin, and so on. Retrospectives are held for Terry Southern, Kathryn Bigelow, Jem Cohen, and (just in time for Caught By the Tides) Jia Zhangke, while Spike Lee gets his own Adventures In Moviegoing.

For recent restorations, Antonioni’s Il Grido and Anthony Harvey’s Dutchman appear. Criterion Editions include The Runner, Touchez pas au grisbi, Godzilla vs.

The Criterion Channel’s April Lineup Includes Jacques Rivette, Chinese Crime Thrillers, Vietnam Cinema & More
Image
I’m old enough to remember when Jacques Rivette films were the domain of dark-web networks and substandard DVD rips, a conspiratorial network worthy of his cinema. It’s still a little strange seeing that April will feature a 10-film, one-short Criterion Channel program that combines of his canonized masterpieces with decidedly lesser-seens––plus Va Savoir, which I really hope is the recently unearthed four-hour cut for which there’s no substitute. Penélope Cruz is also subject of a retrospective in April, which––more than making me pine for a Rivette collab that never was––will include both Abre Los Ojos and Vanilla Sky, some Almodóvar, and another in the Channel’s ongoing let’s-add-a-Woody-Allen-movie campaign, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

For themed series, J. Hoberman has curated a series on the dangers of ’60s and ’70s New York that runs from Michael Roemer’s recently restored The Plot Against Harry and...

‘The Greatest’: Amin Joseph To Play Boxer Sonny Liston In Amazon’s Muhammad Ali Series
Image
Amin Joseph (Snowfall) has been cast as a lead opposite Jaalen Best in The Greatest, Prime Video’s limited series about the life of Muhammad Ali, from executive producer Michael B. Jordan and executive producer/showrunner Ben Watkins.

The series will feature the defining moments in Ali’s life and career — both in and out of the ring — that have been well documented as well as moments that took place outside the spotlight. The world remembers an icon, but The Greatest is about a man, a husband, a father, a brother, and a son.

Best will play the boxing legend. Joseph will play his rival, heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. Nicknamed “The Bear,” Liston had been considered unbeatable until he lost the title in 1964 to loud-mouthed underdog Muhammad Ali (then known as Cassius Clay).

Also previously cast are Omari Hardwick as Ali’s father, Cassius “Cash” Clay Sr., and Dana Gourrier as his mother,...

All 5 Andrew Lloyd Webber Movie Musicals, Ranked
Image
Composer and impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most well-known names in musical theater and, thanks to some notable movie adaptations, he's also known in film circles as well. The London-born Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career collaborating on the Oliver!-inspired musical The Likes of Us with Tim Rice. That musical ended up failing to gain a backer and, after some more attempts to get something off the ground, he finally was able to produce Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the musical that would launch him into stardom.

Since then, Webber has helped fund and create songs for some of the most recognizable musicals ever, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera (1986), The Wizard of Oz (2011), and School of Rock (2015). He's won one Academy Award and been nominated three times, gone 3 for 15 at the Grammys, won a Golden Globe, and won 6 Tonys out of 23 nominations.

Image
In his seventh decade, Donny Osmond has a nightly show on the Las Vegas strip and is about to return to the UK stage for a turn in Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s Bible-inspired musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

This would all come as a surprise to his childhood friend and fellow superstar Michael Jackson, whom Osmond remembers giving him some stark advice when his career hit the pits in the 1980s.

Osmond came to fame in the 1960s and early 1970s with his singing family of six brothers, one sister, while at the same time Jackson was the breakout star of his own family group, The Jackson Five. Both groups sold millions around the world, and Donny became a solo superstar.

However, following two decades of success, Donny Osmond could suddenly no longer get arrested. In an interview with The Times of London, he remembers asking Michael Jackson for advice.

9 Million Tulips and an Extra-Grande Ariana: ‘Wicked’ Director Jon M. Chu on Creating Oz
Image
Jon M. Chu understood the pressure that he’d be facing when he took on directing Universal’s Wicked, an adaptation of one of the most successful stage musicals of all time. A Wicked fan himself — he’s seen the show 12 times, seven before being hired to helm the film — he knew the stakes were high for casting Elphaba and Galinda and bringing the vibrant world of Oz to the big screen. “If there’s anything I’ve learned through the business, it’s how to deal with pressure. For Wicked specifically, that is a whole other thing,” Chu says, adding that the show’s roof-raising anthem was a particular challenge. “ ‘Defying Gravity’ is one of the most complicated things I’ve ever shot in my entire life. I felt more pressure with ‘Defying Gravity’ than the whole movie itself.”

Wicked reunites Chu with Michelle Yeoh, who starred in his...

Image
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has announced its first wave of program details for its upcoming 58th edition, which is set to take place from June 28 through July 6, 2024. Some films, like Orson Welles’ “The Trial” are direct adaptations of Kafka’s writings; but the series also includes movies about Kafka’s life, and films like Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours” that were influenced by Kafka’s ideas.

“For decades, Kafka’s oeuvre has functioned as a continuing provocation to filmmakers,...

Movie Poster of the Week: The Posters of the 11th New York Film Festival
Image
Above: 1973 New York Film Festival poster designed by Niki de Saint Phalle. The 61st edition of the New York Film Festival, which opens tonight, has 32 films in its Main Slate, fifteen films in its Spotlight section, ten films and seven collections of shorts in the Currents sidebar, and eleven revivals. That's over 60 feature films. Fifty years ago, in 1973, the 11th edition of the festival had just eighteen feature films and nineteen shorts. Just like this year’s opener—Todd Haynes’s May December—1973’s opening night film, François Truffaut’s Day for Night, had premiered four months earlier at the Cannes Film Festival. And as with this year’s festival, the 1973 edition opened, fifty years and one day ago exactly, in the shadow of an artists' strike. Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians had been picketing the New York Philharmonic outside Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, where the festival was taking place,...

Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg & Paul Thomas Anderson Share Their TCM Picks to Watch This September
David Zaslav
Following David Zaslav’s despicable gutting of Turner Classic Movies earlier this summer––one of many anti-art maneuvers the money-hungry Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president has commandeered in his embarrassing, hopefully short-lived tenure––he hoped to curry some favor by bringing together the holy trinity of filmmakers to guide the future of the channel. Now, after a few weeks on the job of “network advisors,” Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson have shared their picks of what to see on the channel this month.

The first two mentioned filmmakers provided videos of their recommendations, with the Killers of the Flower Moon director recommending the Boris Karloff-led Isle of the Dead, Two Sisters from Boston, Victor Fleming’s melodrama Red Dust, and Joseph Losey’s Accident.

Spielberg recommends a pair of Vincente Minnelli films, Meet Me in St. Louis and The Bad and the Beautiful, Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life,...

Rathinirvedam to Christy: The evolution of teenage-centric themes in Malayalam cinema
Image
FilmsOf late, Malayalam cinema has had a lot of nuanced narratives headlining teens, and they have mostly been well-received. We track the evolution of teen and young adult representation on screen over the years.Mathew, Krishnachandran, AnaswaraMalayalam cinema hasn’t really explored the conflicts that come with teenage as it should have. Instead, we have mostly been rallying around the various dimensions of adulthood—alpha, domesticated, violent, powerful, flawed men and often domesticated yet occasionally empowered, distinctive women. Sporadically we have had stories about teen sexual awakenings (Rathinirvedham), rebellion (Deshadanakili Karayarilla), infatuation, and, teen pregnancy (Notebook). Of late, Malayalam cinema has had a lot of nuanced narratives headlining teens, and they have mostly been well-received. These films have also introduced us to a whole new range of fine talents. Andrew Lloyd Webber Reveals King Charles “Shed A Tear” And Had “Goosebumps” When He First Heard The ‘Coronation Anthem’
Image
Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”

The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.

Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”

The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

Jon M. Chu Bit By The Musical Bug Again, Directing Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Image
As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.

"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. In the Webber/Rice musical, Joseph eventually gets out of bondage...

The Daniels And Charlotte Wells Score At The Directors Guild Awards
Image
As awards season continues, Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America handing out their awards. And, perhaps not too surprisingly (though it was their first DGA win), Everything Everywhere All At Once filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home the big feature film prize.

"This has been an incredible year for our little film that somehow keeps going," Kwan said as part of his acceptance speech. The pair won over the likes of TÁR's Todd Field, Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, The Banshees Of Inisherin's Martin McDonagh and The Fabelmans' Steven Spielberg.

In the First Time Feature Director category, Aftersun's Charlotte Wells won, over the likes of Saint Omer's Alice Diop and Emily The Criminal's John Patton Ford.

Elsewhere, there was recognition for Euphoria's Sam Levinson for the episode 'Stand Still Like The Hummingbird' and Station Eleven's Helen Shaver took home...

‘Phantom of the Opera’ to Close on Broadway After 35 Years
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest running show, is scheduled to close on Feb. 18.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber-composed musical has been playing at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre since January 1988. The musical has been a staple of the Great White Way, and popular culture, ever since, but has attracted more of a tourist audience in recent years — a demographic that has been slower to return amid the pandemic — and has seen its grosses waver, amid rising running costs.

Like all of Broadway, the production was forced to close when the industry was shut down on March 12, 2020. The musical reopened on Oct. 22, 2021 to great fanfare, which included Lloyd Webber DJ’ing to a crowd outside the theater. That fall, the musical saw a boost in grosses, alongside other returning classics, and was supported by federal funding in the form of a close to 9.9 million federal grant.

Bill Maher Argues Salman Rushdie ‘Had a Good Reason to Be Fearful’ of Islamic Extremists (Video)
Bill Maher
Bill Maher cut his critics off at the pass Friday night, certain that they’d once again label him Islamaphobic for pointing out that Salman Rushdie had every reason to be afraid of the “dangerous” religion.

“A good friend of this show got stabbed today, Sal Rushdie,” Maher began the roundtable chat. “He was stabbed by someone named Hadi Matar. We don’t know the motivation yet, but Sal did have some enemies in the past, as I recall. So I’m guessing Hadi is not Amish.”

Rushdie — who has been a target of the Islamic world since the publication in 1988 of “The Satanic Verses” because many see it as a blasphemous depiction of Muhammad — was about to deliver a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York State, when a man rushed the staged and stabbed him at least twice, once in the neck. As of this publishing, the...

Pathaam Valavu review: An underwhelming crime drama with nothing new to offer
Image
ReviewThough director M Padmakumar comes to his element in some scenes in the second half of the film, the cliché-ridden first half is likely to have already drained you out by then.Fahir MaithuttySuraj Venjaramoodu as Solomon in Pathaam Valavu | Credit: YouTubeWhen M Padmakumar's Joseph released in 2018, it had come as a pleasant surprise. A sleeper hit, the film also gave a big boost to the career of actor Joju George. Pathaam Valavu is Padmakumar's attempt to return to the crime drama genre after the debacle of Mamangam. The result, however, is rather underwhelming when compared to Joseph. Pathaam Valavu begins with Sub Inspector Sethu (Indrajith) and his fellow officers on the lookout for a jail inmate named Solomon (Suraj Venjaramoodu), who has absconded at the end of his parole. Sethu and his men soon find and arrest Solomon. But on the way back down the hill, there is a...

Fremantle has acquired a 70% stake in Italy’s Lux Vide, the prominent TV production company that has been steadily raising its standing in the international arena, most recently with the high-end TV series “Medici,” “Devils” and “Leonardo.”

The long-gestating Lux Vide deal, which closed on Thursday, marks the latest acquisition by the expanding Rtl-owned production and distribution giant.
