This would all come as a surprise to his childhood friend and fellow superstar Michael Jackson, whom Osmond remembers giving him some stark advice when his career hit the pits in the 1980s.

Now, after a few weeks on the job of “network advisors,” Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson have shared their picks of what to see on the channel this month.

Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”

The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.

Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”

The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

As confirmed by Deadline today, Jon M. Chu, one of cinema's premiere makers of cinematic musicals, will be adapting the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice operetta "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" for Amazon Studios. In addition to directing, Chu will produce the film alongside Scott Sanders, who worked on Chu's adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's and Quiara Alegría Hudes' stage musical "In the Heights," released in 2021.

"Joseph" is an outsize, rock-forward, expressionistic rendition of the Book of Genesis, telling the story of the Coat of Many Colors. In Genesis, Joseph was given said garment by his father, much to the chagrin of his jealous brothers, who began to plot against him. Joseph was thrown into a pit, with one of his more benevolent brothers planning to rescue him later. He was eventually dragged out and sold into slavery. Chu will reunite with his In The Heights producing partner Scott Sanders to develop and shoot the musical treatment of the Old Testament tale of Joseph, who is driven from his home by his 11 jealous brothers.

Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group has long wanted to develop the show into a Hollywood spectacular and had been seeking partners to achieve that aim.

We hear Chu has been “dreaming” about Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat for years, and he is now set to direct for Amazon Studios.

As awards season continues, Saturday night saw the Directors Guild of America handing out their awards. And, perhaps not too surprisingly (though it was their first DGA win), Everything Everywhere All At Once filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert took home the big feature film prize.

"This has been an incredible year for our little film that somehow keeps going," Kwan said as part of his acceptance speech. The pair won over the likes of TÁR's Todd Field, Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, The Banshees Of Inisherin's Martin McDonagh and The Fabelmans' Steven Spielberg.

The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest running show, is scheduled to close on Feb. 18.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber-composed musical has been playing at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre since January 1988. The musical has been a staple of the Great White Way, and popular culture, ever since, but has attracted more of a tourist audience in recent years — a demographic that has been slower to return amid the pandemic — and has seen its grosses waver, amid rising running costs.

Like all of Broadway, the production was forced to close when the industry was shut down on March 12, 2020. The musical reopened on Oct. 22, 2021 to great fanfare, which included Lloyd Webber DJ’ing to a crowd outside the theater. That fall, the musical saw a boost in grosses, alongside other returning classics, and was supported by federal funding in the form of a close to 9.9 million federal grant.

Fremantle has acquired 70% of Lux Vide, the 30-year-old Italian producer of Medici, Leonardo and Coco Chanel.

Under the deal, which forms part of Fremantle’s growth plan to invest in global scripted indies, the founding Bernabei family will retain the remaining 30%.

Luca Bernabei will continue as CEO and Fremantle Group COO Andrea Scrosati will become Chairman, with Matilde Bernabei taking an Honorary Chairman post and serving on the Management Board.

Fremantle has acquired a 70% stake in Italy’s Lux Vide, the prominent TV production company that has been steadily raising its standing in the international arena, most recently with the high-end TV series “Medici,” “Devils” and “Leonardo.”

The long-gestating Lux Vide deal, which closed on Thursday, marks the latest acquisition by the expanding Rtl-owned production and distribution giant. Fremantle, which has been on a buying spree, now owns or controls a panoply of independently operated production shingles across Europe, as well as in Israel, Australia and the U.S.

Their stated goal is to invest and grow in the global scripted arena where, by their count, Fremantle delivered 81 scripted shows in 2021, including BBC One hit “The Responder,” HBO Max series “Lust,” from Sweden’s Miso Film, and Italian dystopian drama “Anna.”

The Santa Barbara Film Festival on Thursday revealed the lineup for its 37th edition, which is set to run March 2-12 in-person in its customary spot in the heat of Oscar season.

The festival will kick off with The Phantom of the Open, the Sony Pictures Classics comedy directed by Craig Roberts and starring Mark Rylance in the true story of Maurice Fitcroft, who entered the 1976 British Open despite never having played a round of golf before. Sally Hawkins and Rhys Ifans also star in the BBC Films pic.

The documentary Dionne Warwick: Don’t Make Me Over is the closing-night film, with Warwick set to be in attendance.
