Mara Wilson was considered for the roles of Amanda Lemmon and Alyssa Callaway after director Andy Tennant had seen her in both Madame Doubtfire (1993) and Miracle sur la 34ème rue (1994). But she was unavailable as she was doing Matilda (1996). Christina Ricci was also considered, but she was also unavailable as she was doing Casper (1995).
The camp used in the film was Camp Mini-Yo-We located in Muskoka, Ontario, which is still an active summer camp today.
During the horse chase scene between Kirstie Alley and Steve Guttenberg, it can be clearly seen that they are indeed the ones doing their own riding stunts in almost every clip of that scene.
The real-life address of the Callaway Mansion used in the film is: 68 The Bridle Path, North York, Ontario M3B 2B1, Canada.
Rysher Entertainment had tried selling the film to various studios including Paramount Pictures, New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and TriStar Pictures, but all four studios turned it down. Warner Bros. picked up the theatrical and home video rights to the movie as they had a deal with Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen's production company Dualstar Productions. Coincidentally, Paramount is the current owner of Rysher Entertainment's film library (including this film), and MGM distributed Rysher's films theatrically for a period of time.
