A Divisive Sequel Whose Place In The Franchise Has Risen With The Last Two Movies

This movie gets a lot of hate and I was disappointed myself when I left the theater initially. However, it is quickly rising in the ranks as garbage entries are churned out. Halloween Kills and Ends have catapulted this one up to one of the top 5 in the franchise in my mind. Rudd's Tommy was also infinitely more likeable than Hall's. He played it weird and damaged but not an unlikeable jerk and for that reason I'm glad Rudd dodged the Halloween Kills bullet. Even with the whole cult of Thorn plot Michael was still Michael in this one and as strong and menacing as ever. I doubt it will ever get retro credit on the level of Halloween 3 (and it is by no means as good as H3) I do believe it should be reconsidered next to the likes of Kills, Ends & Resurrection.

A mystery best kept under wraps

What made Myers so scary was the fact that you didn't know what drove him to such insanity or made him indestructable. Trying to explain his origins would have been a tough thing to do right, and this doesn't come close. Does this film bore? no, but had they kept the producer's cut instead of this version it might have been worthy.

Was This Edited With A Chainsaw?

By the time you get to the sixth entry in a horror franchise, things like subtlety and character development are usually thrown out the window and replaced with ridiculous plot twists and endless gory set pieces. Some of this can be fun, but it still needs to make sense. The Curse of Michael Myers apparently didn't get that memo.

The film begins the way it intends to go - with an array of annoying flash cuts that make no sense. We never feel like we know where we are or what the story is really about, because it seems like every scene at least has a button involving a flash cut and loud sound effect. Maybe they felt like they needed them to keep the audience awake.

Poor Donald Pleasance seems lost, but Paul Rudd shows up and still looks the exact same as he does now. Whose blood is he bathing in?

Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers 6/10

The sixth installment to the Halloween franchise brings Michael Myers back to Haddonfield to kill Jamie's offspring. This movie way gloomier and darker compared to the previous Halloween films, which was kind of a breath of fresh air. Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle, yes the kid that was babysat by Laurie Stroke, does a great job as the co-lead to the movie alongside Donald Pleasance. Dr. Loomis returns to his last movie of the franchise to stop Michael, only to run into a person from his past, The Man in Black. The Curse has a really good story and atmosphere but I have to really knock on the ending for being what I felt very incomplete. In order to satisfy the urge for a better ending, there is a Producer's cut of the film out there but sadly it isn't as strong as I hoped it would be. The 6th movie may follow the events from the 4th and 5th but it truly stands on its own for being a memorable film and a decent addition to the Halloween franchise.

    Some good ideas emerged

Some great moments of violence. The problem was that the great concept was poorly executed. The story progression is often slow and confusing. Some good ideas emerged though. I just couldn't help but think that this film could have been so much better. Turn it on, sit back and let it happen, it's fine.

    • Trivia
Most of the cast and crew disowned this movie. On the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror (2006) DVD, they stated that the studio, producers, and director interfered and argued to the point of ridiculousness which resulted in a very poorly directed and edited film.

When Kara calls home, Beth answers a cordless phone, but the base station would not work without electricity.
    • Quotes

Mrs. Blankenship: A long, long time ago, it was a night of great power. When the days grew short, the spirits of the dead, returned to their homes to warm themselves by the fire's side. All across the land, huge bonfires were lit. Ohhh, there was a marvelous celebration. People danced, and they played games, and they dressed up in costumes, hoping to ward off the evil spirits. Especially the boogey man.

    • Alternate versions
In the original ending, the cult of Thorn kidnaps Kara and Danny Strode, intending to curse Danny with the sign of Thorn just like Michael Myers was as a child and make him kill his mother in a blood sacrifice. Kara is tied to a sacrificial altar in the bowels of Smith's Grove Sanitarium. They're saved by Tommy, who eventually stops Michael's pursuit of them with the carved stones he calls "the runes of light," which he explained to Kara in an earlier, also deleted scene as being the bane of the sign of Thorn. These rune stones are arranged in the Shape's path by Tommy, and when he steps within their circle, the Shape is frozen in place, like a mystical ward. Tommy then escapes with Danny and Kara, leaving Dr. Loomis to return, and face Michael and Dr. Wynn in the final scene.
