Andrew Garfield Reveals His One Condition To Reprise Spider-Man Role: ‘It Would Have To Be Very Weird’
Image
Is Andrew Garfield shutting the door on reprising his Spider-Man role? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Andrew Garfield isn’t shutting the door on Spider-Man, but he’s not exactly swinging back in either, not unless things get weird. And not the kind of world that’s just alternate timelines or multiverse cameos. He’s talking offbeat, unexpected, creatively strange. The type of returns that flips the script instead of just revisiting it.

From Controversial Reboot to Cult Favorite

Garfield stepped into the red-and-blue suit for The Amazing Spider-Man back in 2012, which was a reboot that had big shoes to fill after fans had grown fond of Tobey Maguire’s web-slinging charm.

Despite the initial resistance, the film turned out to be a commercial win, pulling in $758 million worldwide, and critics and audiences gave it a respectable nod. He returned for a second round, but it wasn’t until No Way Home...

Andrew Garfield Says He Had to Work Incredibly Hard to Break Free of Spider-Man Questions
Image
Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man movies elevated the actor’s career to a stratospheric level overnight. However, the success and fame that comes with donning the red and blue costume of Marvel’s most profitable and iconic hero comes at a price. As Garfield recently revealed during an appearance at the Marrakech Film Festival (via Variety), the benefits of stepping into the role of Spider-Man were offset by interviewers and fans only ever wanting to talk about the web-slinger.

As part of the jury at the festival, Garfield has found himself in a commanding position in Hollywood over the last decade, from being sought for some coveted roles to finding himself on nomination short-lists for many awards. As he explained to the press, though, there have been many struggles to break free from the shadow cast by his short time as a Marvel hero. He...

Andrew Garfield Talks Brit Pack In Hollywood, Prepping To Play Spider-Man & How Red Sea Fest Reminds Him Of Sundance – Red Sea Film Festival
Image
Andrew Garfield shared insights into his early days in Hollywood, experiences working on the Spider-Man franchise and thoughts about Red Sea International Festival Festival during his masterclass at the festival today.

He shared the stage with Saudi producer and Red Sea Film Foundation head Mohammed Al Turki, an old friend whom he’d worked with on indie feature 99 Homes in 2014. Directed by Iranian-us filmmaker Ramin Bahrani, 99 Homes was set during the recession period of the late 2000s when many Americans were losing their homes.

“It was an interesting group of us making that film,” Garfield remembered. “There was Ramin who was an American filmmaker but of a very different cultural heritage, then Mo of Saudi heritage and me of English heritage. So there was this melting pot bunch of people who felt maybe like they were outsiders in a certain way, telling a story about what it is to be an outsider.

Image
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell showcase their much-discussed chemistry in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ romantic comedy “Anyone but You,” premiering in theaters on Dec. 22.

But through pretending, they actually fall in love.”

“Let’s just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney says to Powell while they take a sunset sailboat ride. “There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” he responds. Though the two roll their eyes, footage flashing throughout the trailer makes it clear their chemistry is undeniable.

Sweeney became a breakout star in HBO’s “Euphoria,” while Powell is best...

What happened to melodies in today’s movie musicals?
Image
Film musicals. You love them or you hate them. Your cringe-o-meter pings into the red or your heart swells with joy, and I’m not convinced there’s any in-between. There once was a time, though, when a simple tune had the ability to stitch itself into the cultural fabric for anyone and everyone. What’s changed?

In recent years, we’ve been served the hip-hop-infused, cultural soup of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and In the Heights, the chart music bombast of The Greatest Showman, even stabs at nostalgia via Disney reboots and the Golden Era homage La La Land, the inevitable Broadway adaptation of which was announced last week. They tell good stories, have high-budget productions, and rake it in at the box office. At the centre of it all, though, I’m not convinced I hear any truly timeless melodies to be remembered or rebooted for the years to come.

Report Suggests That Bots Were Behind Zack Snyder Movie Oscar Wins
Joe Morton
“In a world of ones and zeroes, you are the absolute master.” So declares the late Dr. Silas Stone (Joe Morton) to his son Victor (Ray Fisher) aka Cyborg in Justice League. Thanks to Silas’s cutting-edge technology and some help from a Mother Box, Cyborg has not only super-strength but also complete control over the internet. “No firewall can stop you, no encryption can defy you,” Silas intones via tape recorder.

While it was Flash entering the Speed Force and not the Cyborg sequence that won the fan-voted “Cheer-worthy Moment” award for Zack Snyder’s Justice League at this year’s Oscar ceremony, reports suggest that advanced technology was at play. According to findings by The Wrap, evidence shows that bots were deployed to automatically vote for Zack Snyder’s Justice League and for Army of the Dead, the Netflix horror movie directed by Snyder. The former took the “Cheer-worthy Moment” award,...

Image
The Oscar frontrunner for Best Sound, “Dune,” reaped a bid for Best Sound Mixing at the the Cinema Audio Society Awards on January 25 as as did two of the other predicted Oscar nominees: “No Time to Die” and “West Side Story.” Also in contention with the Cas are “The Power of the Dog” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” They bumped two of our predicted Oscar nominees: “Belfast” and “tick, tick… Boom!”

The upcoming Oscars mark the second year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.

Last year four of the five Cas contenders — “Greyhound,” “Mank,” “News of the World and “Sound of Metal” — reaped Oscar bids. The fifth, “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” was bumped by “Soul,” which had vied in the animated race at the Cas Awards.

Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort in West Side Story (2021)
Out of tune: why are audiences staying away from the movie musical?
Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort in West Side Story (2021)
West Side Story, Dear Evan Hansen and In the Heights have all been box office flops this year, which has led to a questioning of the genre’s place in Hollywood

In a very strange year for movies, the failure of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story is perhaps the most head-scratching development of all. The remake of the beloved 1961 musical grossed just $10m on its opening weekend, and while the film could certainly improve upon its lackluster debut over the holidays, it caps a year of disappointments for fans of the movie musical. In the Heights kicked off the summer with poor ticket sales and accusations of colorism for failing to have enough Afro-Latino actors in its cast. Dear Evan Hansen created the rare consensus of the year, hated by critics and audiences alike, and endured prolonged mockery on social media for its casting of the crow’s-footed Ben Platt as its teenaged protagonist.

Andrew Garfield Insists He's Not Appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home
Andrew Garfield
Andrew Garfield would like to be excluded from this narrative, please and thank you. For months now, the Tick, Tick... Boom! actor has been plagued by rumors of an upcoming appearance in Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which follows Peter Parker (Tom Holland) as he struggles to reclaim his identity as Spider-Man.
