New York News, a series about, not surprisingly, a New York newspaper, its editor and reporters, was a promising show that CBS did not stand behind; therefore, it tanked rather quickly, which is a shame. A couple of the actors went on to other shows - Melina Kanakaredes (Providence) and Kelli Williams (The Practice) to name two.
First, the series had an unfortunate time slot opposite Seinfeld, which at the time was doing things such as the soup Nazi episode. If you really want a show to find a following, I think you find another place for it. Also, the show suffered from too many subplots. Some characters needed to be cut or rotated in order to streamline it.
That being said, Gregory Harrison was his usual likable, handsome self, and it was great to see Mary Tyler Moore again in a series. The biggest bonus for me was Madeline Kahn as a gossip reporter. She was absolutely hilarious and had some wonderful scenes and plots, including one in which she was stood up by Fabbio. Dressed in a cape, she dashes into Mary Tyler Moore's office to complain, asking her about the last time she was stood up. "I don't think I've ever been stood up," Moore answers. Kahn takes a beat, and then says, "Thank you for that." I wish they'd tried a little harder with this one so we would have more of the late Kahn in this role. There are, I believe, episodes that were never shown, including the ones with George C. Scott.
