Mark Pritchard has recruited Thom Yorke of The Smile and Radiohead for a new single. Together, the two have unveiled the recording for “Back in the Game,” which was previewed live throughout Yorke’s 2024 solo tour. Take a listen below.

While the two have been frequent creative partners over the past decade, often appearing on each other’s records (like Pritchard’s 2016 single “Beautiful People”) and in live performance settings, “Back in the Game” marks their first proper collaboration. On the track, Pritchard digitally distorted Yorke’s distinct vocals with a H910 Harmonizer, lending an edgy, haunting quality to the song.

The third studio album by The Smile, and their second of 2024, Cutouts, has arrived.

Released today via Xl Recordings, Cutouts features 10 new songs by the Radiohead spinoff composed of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and drummer Tom Skinner. Many of the songs were first premiered live during the trio’s 2021 and 2022 performances, and were then recorded at Oxford and Abbey Road Studios.

Cutouts is the second full-length release by The Smile in 2024, following January’s Wall of Eyes, one of the best albums of 2024 so far. The new album was preceded by a number of singles, including “Don’t Get Me Started,” “Foreign Spies,” and “Zero Sum.”

“Don’t Get Me Started” was originally premiered live in concert during a string of shows earlier this year. Last week, The Smile released the song alongside another new track called “The Slip” on 12-inch vinyl exclusively in independent record stores. Now, “Don’t Get Me Started” is available to stream globally online.

Crafted by the visual artist Weirdcore, known for their collaborations with Aphex Twin, Radiohead, and The Caretaker, the video features a continuously transforming environment that shifts, stutters, mutates, and collapses. Guitarist and composer Jonny Greenwood is “out of danger” after intensive care medical treatment, according to a statement released by one of his musical projects The Smile.

Greenwood, who composed movie scores for The Phantom Thread, Spencer, There Will Be Blood and The Power of the Dog in addition to his longtime status as lead guitarist and keyboard player with Radiohead, will soon be returning home from hospital, but The Smile – which sees Greenwood on stage with Radiohead bandmate Thom Yorke – has cancelled forthcoming engagements. The statement read:

“A few days ago, Jonny became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care. Mercifully he is now out of danger and will soon return home. We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery.

With Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood comprising two-thirds of the Smile’s lineup, the band is unlikely to ever escape comparisons to Radiohead. There’s a certain undefinable quality to the latter group’s music that courses conspicuously through the Smile’s Wall of Eyes, but there are also some more easily identifiable similarities between the two bands.

For one, most of the eight tracks here are built around drumbeats that help to anchor ephemeral melodies. On the title track, ambient synths ebb and flow, washing over the song’s acoustic guitars in a way that’s reminiscent of Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely.” Elsewhere, the surreal electric guitar of the eight-minute “Bending Hectic” serves as a touchstone around which fever-pitched synths continually circle, similar to those on albums like Hail to the Thief.

When The Smile first premiered the single “Friend of a Friend,” it was to an eager audience in Croatia. During that show, back in 2022, the trio made up of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Tom Skinner revealed that the song had been written that same day. At the time, it was only a skeleton of the song it would come to be as the Radiohead side-project released “Friend of a Friend” as the latest single from their upcoming record Wall of Eyes.

The Smile have unveiled “Friend of a Friend,” the latest preview of their upcoming sophomore album, Wall of Eyes.

The song, which was initially previewed in concert during The Smile’s 2022/2023 tour, features strings from the London Contemporary Orchestra and saxophone from Robert Stillman.

The Smile have also announced Wall Of Eyes, On Film, a cinematic event in collaboration with filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. Screening at 12 independent cinemas across the world between January 18th-25th, the event will include a complete playback of Wall Of Eyes in surround sound and featuring never-before-seen footage of the album’s recording sessions, plus the world premiere of the music video for “Friend of a Friend” directed by Anderson and shot on 35mm. Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien has given fans an update on his next solo album in a message that also calls for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

In an Instagram post, O’Brien thanked his “little community” of fans and explained that he had needed a break. “I’m deep into my next record, and deep in the process,” he wrote. “I will share some more soon … from music to influences to gear .. all of it… it’s been and continues to be a journey..Sending love and warmth from me and Ziggy.”

Earlier in the message, O’Brien apologized for not commenting on the heightened Gaza conflict earlier. “Like so many of you I have found the events of October 7 and what has followed too awful for words .. anything that I have tried to write feels so utterly inadequate,” he said. “Ceasefire now. Paul Thomas Anderson is reuniting with his Radiohead cohorts.

The Oscar-winning auteur helms Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s latest music video for band The Smile along with Tom Skinner. The Smile’s new track “Wall of Eyes” is from the eponymous album, set to be released January 26 by Xl Recordings.

Anderson directs the trippy black-and-white music video for “Wall of Eyes,” which centers on Yorke wandering through London. Yorke is shown alone in a pub, staring at a literal wall of eyeballs with a Lynchian twist, and later among dozens of versions of himself. The music video was filmed on location at The Mildmay Club and on the streets of London, England from October 24 to 26, 2023.

“Wall of Eyes” also features strings by The London Contemporary Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Brunt. The video is produced by Sara Murphy, Erica Frauman, and Shirley O’Connor, with Andy Jurgensen editing.

Pj Harvey has confirmed her first new album in seven years. Entitled I Inside the Old Year Dying, it’s due out on July 7th via Partisan Records. As a preview, Harvey has unveiled “A Child’s Question, August” as the lead single. Watch the song’s accompanying video below.

The songs featured on I Inside the Old Year Dying came together in “about three weeks.” Harvey then recorded the album live at London’s Battery Studio with longtime collaborator John Parish and producer Flood.

“I think the album is about searching, looking – the intensity of first love, and seeking meaning,” Harvey said. “Not that there has to be a message, but the feeling I get from the record is one of love – it’s tinged with sadness and loss, but it’s loving. I think that’s what makes it feel so welcoming: so open.”

The news was buried at the end of an email blast (via Reddit) announcing a handful of new North American tour dates. “We’re deep in recording, week 7,” The Smile wrote. “Reel 15.” The group didn’t reveal any further details, but it’s a promising sign they could release new music before this summer.

In June, The Smile will head out on a now 18-date tour featuring their first-ever show in Mexico City, as well as stops in Austin, Miami, New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and more. Foo Fighters, The Smile, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, and Shania Twain are among the acts set to play Rbc Ottawa Bluesfest this summer.

The annual music festival goes down over nine nights (July 6th-9th and July 12th-16th) at LeBreton Flats Park in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

The 2023 lineup also promises Mumford & Sons, Weezer, Death Cab For Cutie, Thundercat, BadBadNotGood, The War on Drugs, Fleet Foxes, Tegan and Sara, Ludacris, Charlotte Cardin, Ajr, Orville Peck, Alvvays, Sudan Archives, Pup, Tank & The Bangas, Julia Jacklin, White Reaper, and Koffee. Fantastic Fest, a weeklong celebration of genre filmmaking, has announced the full lineup for its 2022 festival.

This year’s event, taking place in Austin, Texas, from Sept. 22 through Sept. 29, will open with the world premiere of Paramount’s unsettling thriller “The Smile,” starring Sosie Bacon as a doctor whose mind begins to turn on her after she witnesses a traumatic experience involving a patient. Director Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or-winning black comedy “Triangle of Sadness” will close the festival.

In total, Fantastic Fest will showcase 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and 21 U.S. premieres. Now in its 17th edition, the festival will be held at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. Horror mavens who can’t make the trek to Texas will be able to catch up on the festivities a week later through the virtual “Ff@Home” experience from Sept. 29 through Oct. 4.

Halfway through A Light for Attracting Attention, the Smile’s debut album, Thom Yorke flashes a smirk: “Don’t bore us, get to the chorus,” he drawls slowly almost without melody over ambient synths and downtempo piano on “Open the Floodgates.” Then he doubles down, whinging, “We want the good bits, without your bullshit, and no heartaches.” These lines are the sorts of gormless heckles he and fellow Smile member Jonny Greenwood have likely heard for decades in their other band, Radiohead, ever since they ventured into more experimental terrain on 1997’s Ok Computer.

With Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar, Sharon Van Etten, Wilco, and more, it’s quite a month for new music and amongst our most-anticipated albums is the debut from the Radiohead side project The Smile. Comprised of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, their album A Light For Attracting Attention will drop this Friday but they’ve now released a new music video for the single Thin Thing.

Directed by Cristóbal León & Joaquín Cociña, who helmed the stunning animation The Wolf House and the recent short The Bones, it’s a vivid stop-motion operating with its own fascinating dreamlike logic.

Already in the midst of his Radiohead side project The Smile, Thom Yorke dropped a surprise new song titled “5.17” on streaming services without warning Sunday.

While it’s unclear why the piano ballad suddenly appeared — reps for Yorke did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment — its arrival coincides with Sunday’s premiere of the third episode of Peaky Blinders’ sixth season, which Yorke and band mate Jonny Greenwood reportedly contributed new music to.
