After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of 2024 with a twelve month shooting schedule, wrapping at the end of December. Despite the quality of the source material, the films based on the works of horror author Stephen King are not always great. The big screen has hosted plenty of masterpieces like The Shining, Stand by Me, and The Shawshank Redemption, but his name is not exactly equivalent to guaranteed success. Cell, The Dark Tower and Riding the Bullet are a few which failed to earn acclaim. And, in the middle ground, where the most divisive movies remain, you will find Thinner.

Thinner, the body horror film based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, has suddenly become a hit on the streaming platform Tubi, a.k.a. one of the few streamers that doesn't require you to pay a single penny or even register.

A new Stephen King movie has become a major hit for the author. King is best known for his works in the horror genre, many of which have been adapted into movies. Quite a few of these have found extraordinary critical success, including 1976's Carrie, which has a Certified Fresh score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for two Oscars. Other prominent adaptations include The Shining (83%), Misery and the non-horror titles Stand by Me and The Shawshank Redemption.

On top of his critical success, quite a few Stephen King movies have become box office hits. Netflix has given a green light to a movie reboot of the Stephen King novel Cujo, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Roy Lee will produce the remake of the horror story about a mother and son who fight off a rabid dog while trapped in their car. Cujo was first adapted from King’s 1981 psychological horror novel of the same name where Cujo is at first a lovable St. Bernard, but after being bitten by a bat becomes everyone’s worst enemy.

In the 1983 film Cujo, a mother, Donna (Dee Wallace), and her son, Tad (Danny Pintauro) come into contact with Cujo and must fight for their lives. King’s novels, starting with 1976’s Carrie, have long been picked up by Hollywood for movie adaptations.

As storytelling beings, we will have always constructed -- and will continue to construct -- broad, historical, intergenerational narratives for ourselves. We can't stop tracing our professional and personal origins among the ancients, and writing their stories directly into our own. We simply shed our fascination with the possibility that talents can be passed from one generation to the next. 

That's certainly the case in Hollywood, a relatively recent art institution in human history, but still rife with its own multigenerational legacies. It's likely you read the headline above and instantly thought of the Coppola clan. The Coppola family has, as of this writing, accrued 12 Oscar wins and 40 nominations between them, and they currently hold the record for the family with the most members to be nominated for Oscars.

More than one wiseguy writer has uttered some variant on, "It's the journey, not the destination," but let's be honest: If you trek a thousand miles through some of the most beautiful, strange, and intriguing landscapes on Earth only to end up at a Burger King, you may wonder why you've endured so much for a lukewarm box of chicken fries. Sticking the landing is a nightmare for every creator, but not everyone can take the occasional wet plop with aplomb like Stephen King can. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs.

Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title. However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value.

When Morgan Freeman got to the stage at the 97th Academy Awards to pay respects to Gene Hackman, fans noticed that he was wearing a single glove on his left hand. Many fans wondered what happened to Freeman as he tried to hide his hands behind his back. It was another win for Neon and director Oz Perkins this past weekend as "The Monkey" absolutely killed it at the box office. Based on the Stephen King short story of the same name, Perkins' latest collected $14 million in its debut domestically, placing in second just behind "Captain America: Brave New World," ($28.2 million), with Marvel's latest collapsing in its second weekend. Meanwhile, Neon and Perkins have reason to pop champagne.

Produced for around $10 million, even before a single dollar from overseas is counted, this gory horror-comedy had been set up for success right out of the gate. "The Monkey" has been met with mixed-to-positive reviews which could impact its ability to endure beyond opening weekend. Even so, that low production cost acts as an insurance policy. This now ranks as Neon's second-biggest opening weekend ever, trailing only Perkins' own "Longlegs" from last year, which opened to $22.4 million en route to a $127 million global finish.

There are a lot of Stephen King books out there — and about as many movies based on those King-ly books. The writer earns his title as a horror master not just through craft, but prolificity. He's got multiple works that could contend for "scariest book ever written," but quite a few that aren't so great either.

If you're preparing for a King deep dive, with movies or TV, consider starting with the cream of the crop. One story that's absolutely in that cream is King's novel "The Dead Zone," which fellow horror master David Cronenberg adapted as a movie in 1983. For added convenience, "The Dead Zone" is now streaming for free (with ads) on Pluto TV.

Let’s be honest Longlegs was a disappointment. Although it did contain a great central performance from Maika Monroe, it’s supernatural storyline owed much too much to many far better films. Added to this, the marketing campaign – which hyped it beyond belief – set audience expectations far higher than anyone could achieve.

That said, the film did extremely well at cinemas across the land, propelling its writer and director into the limelight and as my review said “all we can hope is going forwards, Osgood Perkins uses the new found fame and commercial footing to indulge his more interesting and unconventional horror ideas.”

Looking through a ranking of the best movies of all time is inevitably going to result in the rounding up of some usual suspects. You can probably rest easy that you’ve seen most, if not all, of these, or if not, then you’ve surely heard of them; they might well be on your watchlist. Think of things along the lines of Citizen Kane, The Godfather, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Lord of the Rings… nothing surprising, but nothing controversial, either.

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, Lawrence has confirmed to the folks at Collider that post-production work on the film is almost complete, and he’s “super happy” with it.

Stephen King has published a staggering 65 novels and novellas since 1974. He shows no signs of stopping any time soon, with his next book, Never Finch, slated for publication in May. But the author's body of work emphasizes quality as well as quantity, containing some of the most acclaimed and influential horror stories of all time, like The Shining, It, and The Stand. On top of that, King has also penned some exceptional dramas, like Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption.

Few genres have been as reliable throughout the history of cinema as the prison break movie, from The Great Escape, to Escape from Alcatraz, to The Shawshank Redemption. Yet few have felt as authentic as Jacques Becker's Le Trou, translated in English as The Hole. Becker spared no expense in faithfully recreating the 1947 escape attempt at France's La Santé Prison, going so far as to cast one of the real inmates, Roland Barbat, to play himself. Barbat, appearing under the stage name Jean Keraudy, also served as a technical consultant, and he endorses the veracity of everything portrayed in a prologue, telling the audience, "This is my story." Becker's near-documentary approach lends newfound excitement to a tried-and-true genre, and influenced a generation of French filmmakers.

You know you’re up to something special when your job involves replicating the kind of chocolate that “The Shawshank Redemption” used to create the mud that Andy Dufresne breaks through to freedom. But that is exactly what production designer Carmen Navis needed to do to make Mo Najjar’s (Mo Amer) own escape from an immigration detention facility — in a dream sequence, anyway — work as such a hilarious, heightened, poignant part of “Mo” Season 2.

Trying to crown one year as the best in cinematic history is fun but also a bit futile. It’s possible to select contenders, but the reality is that every year in the history of the medium has something good to offer. Without picking a single year, 1939 is iconic, as is 1994, but more recently – or at least as far as the 21st century is concerned – 2019 was kind of an all-time good year for movies.

The Green Mile, a supernatural prison drama from 1999, is finding new life on the free streaming service Tubi. The Stephen King adaptation stars Tom Hanks in one of his genuinely underrated performances. The film currently sits at the third spot on Tubi's Top 10 list of the service's most-watched films.

Written and directed by Frank Darabont, The Green Mile follows a group of prison guards working at the Cold Mountain Penitentiary death row, or as everyone calls it, "The Green Mile." Led by Officer Paul Edgecomb (Hanks), the group receives John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a new inmate who has been sentenced to death for a horrible crime. Coffey doesn't behave like a murderer and claims that he's innocent. Edgecomb eventually realizes that the convict even possesses an extraordinary power to heal people. But we'll leave it at that for those who still haven't seen this classic, as we'd rather not spoil it for you.

Prison dramas are strange. It’s certainly not my go-to genre when it comes to recommending films or TV shows, and it is definitely not something I gravitate to in my free time. But if I come across one by chance, and if it’s even half-decent, I can assure you that I’ll stick with it all the way to the end. That’s how I came across masterpieces like The Great Escape, Escape from Alcatraz, The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Hurricane. I watched Starred Up for Jack O’Connell, Chopper for Eric Bana, Bronson for Tom Hardy, A Prayer Before Dawn for Joe Cole, Gridiron Gang for Dwayne Johnson, The Longest Yard for Adam Sandler, and Brawl in Cell Block 99 for Vince Vaughn. Also, Chicken Run is undoubtedly up there with the greats. Now, when it comes to TV shows, I don’t show the same kind of zeal.

Exploring characters at the lowest points of their lives, these films have a well-defined formula, typically focusing on a relatable hero, often wrongly convicted, as he tries to earn the respect of his fellow inmates and escape.

While not all prison movies are focused on the idea of escape, they all share the basic concept of making audiences identify with the feeling of captivity, injustice, and fear. Hollywood has no shortage of great prison movies, with modern hits like Escape Plan and Law Abiding Citizen bringing viewers to the heart of life behind bars. In an era when there is more media than ever before, new arbiters have sprung up to guide our increasingly disoriented collective taste. Though it throws up confounding developments such as claiming that Sean Connery's only "perfect" movie is "Darby O'Gill and the Little People," Rotten Tomatoes has emerged as one such guide through the dim and bloated media landscape wrought by the rise of the internet and streaming platforms. Likewise, IMDb, with its devoted user base eager to register their takes on movies and TV shows, has provided another way to decipher modern media.

Stephen Kingis widely regarded as the “King of Horror,” and with 5 decades of writing within the genre, it’s no surprise why. Most of his novels take place in Maine and are set in fictional towns such as Derry and Castle Rock. It’s the latter of which that is arguably his most recognizable, as it has served as the setting for many of his novels, such as “Cujo,” and “The Body”. It has also been referenced in many of King’s works, such as “It” and “The Shawshank Redemption”. The fictional town is sort of a character in and of itself, something that was eventually expanded upon in 2018 with the premiere of the Castle Rock TV series.

One might wonder if Netflix could just keep every film or series they have ever streamed. That sure would make it easy for the rest of us to find what we love. Still, there is licensing and bandwidth to worry about.

That means every month viewers have to try to catch shows and movies before they leave the streamer for good. Or at least for a while. Thankfully, there are not a huge number of things leaving Netflix in February, but there are ones we will miss.

Below are three films you will not want to miss. You might have seen them before, but they are worth seeing again. And if you have not seen them, one might ask, "Why not?" Well, here is your chance.

For all the excellent Stephen King film adaptations that are out there, from Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption to Brian De Palma's Carrie and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, only one can say that it came away with an Oscar – Rob Reiner's Misery. Released in 1990 to widespread critical acclaim, the feature based on King's 1987 novel of the same name is carried by a famous, career-defining performance by the great Kathy Bates as the obsessive Annie Wilkes that would earn the actress her only statuette to date. Between her scene-chewing acting and a strong screen partner in James Caan, it's still viewed among the best takes on the master of horror's work to date, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Starting this month, this gem of horror history is now also free to watch as part of Tubi's catalog.

If you're a fan of the macabre, then Stephen King movies are probably right up your alley. However, this time we won't provide news about his scary films. In fact, there's nothing quite scary about Stand by Me, except that it offers a surprisingly honest look at childhood and the good and bad things that come with it. For fans of this departure from King's usual hokum, then you have to hurry and see Stand by Me before it leaves Netflix on February 1.

The coming-of-age movie will depart the catalog and will disappear for a while from the streaming-verse. Note that other titles leaving the streamer on February 1 include Snowpiercer, Zero Dark Thirty and 2021's Dune. If you haven't heard about the 1986 movie, just know that it's worth paying for a Netflix subscription even if prices are ridiculously high. Yes, it is that good.

Stand by Me is based on King's novella The Body,...

During a recent appearance on The Kingcast, Stephen King praised Mike Flanagan‘s take on his magnum opus, The Dark Tower.

“I’ve seen screenplays and pitches, and he starts where he should start,” the author says. “The beats are perfect. They’re just perfect.”

King lovingly refers to Flanagan — who previously adapted Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and the forthcoming The Life of Chuck — as “the King whisperer.” The filmmaker revealed in late 2022 that his Intrepid Pictures acquired the rights The Dark Tower.

Tangentially related to the Dark Tower saga, King is currently working on a third Talisman novel. He expressed his excitement to return to the parallel world he created with the late Peter Straub.

“I’ve been channeling [Straub] like a motherfucker while working on Talisman 3. I find myself using his verbs. People don’t necessarily walk into a room. They bustle into a room, because that’s a very Straub-ian word.

Directed by Rob Reiner and released in 1986, Stand by Me is a classic coming-of-age drama based on the Stephen King novella The Body. Autobiographical in nature, The Body unfolded during King's childhood in 1960. The author used the pages of his story to recollect memories of nostalgia, mixed in with the childhood emergence of a reckoning with death in the banality of a postwar suburban landscape.

As an adaptation of The Body, Stand by Me found a way to include everything that already worked in King's narrative and elevated it to greater heights. Rob Reiner approached the project with loving attention to detail and charm, never losing any of the original story's resonance. While the film is incredibly faithful to the story that came before, there are some notable details at the movie's end that Reiner adjusted to make for a more significant emotional impact.

The 2025 lineup for the Inkcarceration Music & Tattoo Festival has been unveiled. The three-day fest features headliners Slipknot, Five Finger Death Punch, and Falling in Reverse, along with such acts as Acid Bath, Knocked Loose, Lamb of God, Three Days Grace, Marilyn Manson, Slaughter to Prevail, and Beartooth, among others.

The festival takes place July 18th-20th in Mansfield, Ohio, at the Ohio State Reformatory, the defunct prison made famous in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. Three-day passes and single-day tickets are currently available here.
