October was huge for Disney+ and Hulu — but which month isn’t? After the weekly installments of “Agatha All Along” and the staple that is Huluween, the bundled streamers gear up for winter programming this November.
Disney+ continues to be the home for live episodes of “Dancing With the Stars” and the original series “Ayla & The Mirrors,” which continues to air new episodes. Along with new children’s programming and holiday specials like “An Almost Christmas Story,” the streamer will premiere “The Music of John Williams” on November 1, celebrating the acclaimed film composer and his decades-long career with new footage and interviews from those he worked with and inspired.
It’s another big month for movies coming to Hulu, as well as beloved shows like “Ally McBeal” (complete series). Stay tuned for an adaptation of Charles Yu’s “Interior Chinatown” and the docuseries “It’s All Country,” as well as...

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.
Also dropping on Hulu this month is the original film Quiz Lady, starring Sandra Oh, Awkwafina, Jason Schwartzman,...

“Or Is It About Men?”
By Raymond Benson
Ken Russell’s controversial but widely-acclaimed adaptation of D. H. Lawrence’s novel, Women in Love, might have had a better and more appropriate title—Men in Love. While touted as being an examination of the nature of love and sexuality between two men and two women, in the end we are left with the more potent notion that there is a love that can exist between two males—as friends—that is more powerful and “eternal” than the love a man will have for a woman.
Released in 1969 in Britain and in 1970 in the U.S. (hence, its four Oscar nominations for the year 1970), Women in Love has not aged well in terms of its arty and borderline pretentious direction… but as I tell my Film History students, “judge a film within the context of when it was released.” In that regard,...

There are few things that bring joy to this young writer’s eyes than the monthly “wacky drawing” found in the Criterion Collection newsletter. Be it the small pieces hinting at a single pending release, or the one found in each New Year’s letter that leaves nerds searching for answers for the subsequent 12 months, these are exciting little puzzles that leave social media a buzz. And that’s ostensibly what happened once again, this time with some interesting twists.
Earlier this week Criterion sent out their newsletter with a drawing of two women playing a game of tennis, with the score tied at love-love. Now, some have seen this as a hint towards a pending release of the great Milos Forman picture Loves of a Blonde, but the more enticing possibility and the one that seems to be a better fit, Ken Russell’s Women In Love has a particular wrinkle worthy of note.

For some reality stars, life after reality television equals fame, fortune and even...love. After gaining some notoriety, some of them have had romances with Hollywood actors and famous singers. In 2007, Lindsay Lohan and fellow socialite Calum Best, who appeared on the British reality shows Fool Around With and The Match, were often seen out together and made tabloid news. Their relationship was turbulent. In his 2015 memoir Second Best: My Dad and Me, Best wrote that "she had a mad life, running around the world all the time. Everyone has their nose in her business, so there was no chance for something real to build between us." "But I did spend enough time with her...

Harlee ended up in Bianchi’s crosshairs when he set her up…for the murder of Nava’s ex-fiancee!
Below, TV Fanatics Stacy Glanzman, Jasmine Peterson, and Christine Orlando debate Woz’s commitment to Harlee, if Nava and Harlee’s breakup was the right move, and should the team be told what’s going on after Shades of Blue Season 2 Episode 5?
Did you ever doubt that Woz would cover for Harlee?
Stacy: No, not at all. He might still be mad at her, but he also still cares about her, and more than that, he cares about Cristina. No matter how angry he was with Harlee, he wouldn't let her get sent to prison and leave Christina alone if he could help it.
Jasmine: Not for a second. He may be pissed at her right now, but she and Cristina are still family, and for Woz, family is everything. I...

We have seen his fabulous choreography both in Hollywood films like Slumdog Millionaire and Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Bollywood films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Saawariya, Guzzarish and many more. Most recently Longinus Fernandes is the man behind the incredibly cool moves in ‘Bolo Har Har Har’ from the movie Shivaay! Directed and starring Ajay Devgn, Shivaay is set to hit the big screen on October 28th.
First, check out his amazing choreography!
I got the chance to do an interview with Longinus about his creation of the dance for the song. Check out what he had to say about the piece, working with Mr. Ajay Devgn, and more!
So how did you become a part of the song for Shivaay?
The song, ‘Bolo Har Har Har’, from the film Shivaay came to me from the Video Director Chandan Arora.
What was the brief that Ajay Devgn gave you for the song?...

For the second frame in a row, an animated title is number one at the box office. But unlike last weekend, when Monday actuals put Inside Out on top in place of Jurassic World, everyone saw today’s win for Minions coming. Since the little, yellow beings first appeared in 2010’s Despicable Me, their commercial appeal has been hard to deny. Now, as expected, the first film to put the creatures front and center has easily secured the highest opening among the three Despicable Me releases. Minions brought in an estimated $115.2 million from 4,301 locations, including $6.2 million from Thursday pm previews. That more than doubles the $56.4 million debut of Despicable Me and stands 38% ahead of 2013’s Despicable Me 2. But as we told you yesterday, DM2 opened on the Wednesday before Independence Day. Those two extra days in theatres make it difficult to draw direct comparisons to Minions, but hey! Since...

There is very little to discuss in terms of new releases this week, especially since I haven't seen the two new Costa-Gravas titles or Rainer Werner Fassbinder title from Criterion, which lead off the "Even More" section below. I have, however, updated the upcoming release schedule with several new titles including Ex Machina, the "Rogue Cut" of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Insurgent and Slow West. Hopefully there's something that catches your eye. The Loft I never saw this, but the way Universal treated it pretty much said all I needed to know. Then I talked to someone that did see it and I know to stay away for good.

For anyone who ever said sequels are tired, old, and only a matter of diminishing returns, there is the Fast and the Furious franchise. Only getting more and more critically acclaimed as each new entry comes out, the latest, Furious 7, not only did well with critics, but at an absolutely bang-up estimated weekend of $143.6 million broke numerous April box office records and is already poised to be the highest earner in an already high-earning series. It made mincemeat of Home, the top draw of last week, which pulled in an estimated $27.4 million and is still struggling to make back its $135 million costs. And while it was in second-place last week, Get Hard appears to have been almost all but forgotten this weekend with an estimated $12.9 million and, with $57 million in domestic earnings, will probably end up a middling effort at best.

Critics considered it decidedly average at best, but that did not stop DreamWorks’ latest effort Home from being the big box office winner of the weekend with an estimated $54 million. It, however, has a long way to go to make back its $135 million costs (and that includes foreign box office), while the similarly excoriated Get Hard, with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, got an estimated $34.6 million, but has much less ground to make up against a $40 million budget. Both may have won out this weekend to the previous top earners, but The Divergent Series: Insurgent and its estimated $22.1 million and Cinderella and its estimated $17.5 million are still two of the three biggest overall draws at the box office, with Cinderella both the current highest top earner and a winner with critics.

Home was number at the box office this weekend with an estimated $54 million. The PG animated family movie stars Jim Parsons, Rihanna, Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez.
Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, “There’s no place like ‘Home’ when it comes to this weekend’s box office as the DreamWorks Animation release distributed by Fox added $78 million globally, topping the international chart & leading the charge in its first weekend in North America for a combined worldwide total to date of $102 million. Another PG-rated movie marked a milestone as Disney’s hit live-action fairytale ‘Cinderella’ crossed the $300 million threshold this weekend with an impressive total to date of $336.2 million.”
20th Century Fox’s Kingsman: Secret Service also crossed the $300 million mark with $328.4 million.
Warner Bros. Pictures comedy Get Hard, starring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell, brought in an estimated $34.6 million and took the number two spot at the box office.

New York (AP) - Business was brisk at the weekend box-office, where the DreamWorks animated alien adventure "Home" beat out the Will Ferrell-Kevin Hart comedy "Get Hard" with a resounding debut of $54 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
While the two films had been expected to vie for the top spot at North American theaters, "Home" came in well above expectations, handing DreamWorks Animation a much-needed hit. Though a distant second, "Get Hard" also opened strongly with an estimated $34.6 million, rewarding the Warner Bros. pairing of two of the most bankable stars in comedy.
Last week's top film, the young-adult sequel "The Divergent Series: Insurgent," slid to third with $22.1 million.
With a $100 million-plus debut expected next weekend for "Furious 7" - a franchise built on street-racing adrenaline and a diverse cast - Hollywood scored with two films that sought a variety of audiences.

With Young Adult fiction making good bank at the box office, it should be no surprise that the dystopian Divergent movies are moving along well with a first-place finish for The Divergent Series: Insurgent and an estimated $54 million to start the weekend right, even if critics are lambasting it. It is not getting as much flak as The Gunman; debuting in fourth with an estimated $5 million, the Sean Penn led action film may be brought to the theaters by the makers of Taken, but it is doing nowhere near the business of the Liam Neeson franchise, and its lack of reported budget is very telling.
Cinderella may not be first this time around, but a second-place estimate of $34.5 million is not looking shabby for the Kenneth Branagh-directed fairy tale, doing good box office here and abroad. Run All Night, on the other hand, with a second weekend estimate of $5.1 million,...

The top movie this weekend was of course Insurgent, part two of The Divergent Series earned an estimated $54 million. Divergent debuted with $54.6 million on this same weekend one year ago. What this means is that we are not done with Ya movies yet; if they continue to make bank, you can count on more and more being thrown our way, for better or worse.
The other new release this weekend was the Sean Penn starring The Gunman from Taken director Pierre Morel, earned an estimated $5 million from 2,816 locations. The film also has terrible reviews (14% on Rotten Tomatoes) and believe it or not, Penn isn’t he most likable of actors.
There was another Christian-themed movie that made its way into theaters this weekend. If you were a fan of Son of God, Heaven is for Real and God’s Not Dead, then you may have checked out Do You Believe?...

In this week’s instalment of our series tracking the global box office …
• Cinderella follows in Frozen and Maleficent’s footsteps
• American seniors market promises rejuvenating effect for Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
• Run All Night hints at termination of Liam Neeson’s action-man persona
Frozen’s stupendous $1.27bn worldwide take was bound to prompt an escalation for the Disney Princess brand – the one female-focused component of its bulging franchise slate – and Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella adaptation is the next instalment. Close in style and tone to the 1950 animation (whose $85m Us gross would be worth $824.2m today), it’s opened almost neck-and-neck ($67.9m) with Frozen ($67.4m) and Maleficent ($69.4m), though behind Alice in Wonderland ($116.1m). Perfectly sound, considering it lacks the star casting of the latter two – and surely a promise of a firm $200m+ Us base for the film’s international run.

Sometimes, there is simply no winning against Disney and Buena Vista. The new, live action Cinderella proved a big boost to a flagging weekend box office, pulling in an estimated $70.1 million – a strong start against a $92 million budget. Nothing else even came close, with the Ed Harris/Liam Neeson thriller Run All Night opening with a rather weak $11 million estimate in comparison, and an unreported budget is not helping matters. Beyond that, things dropped below the $10 million threshold; even Kingsman: The Secret Service bumping up a place to third from last week only garnered an estimated $6.2 million. But in the end, counting worldwide gross, it is proving a decent success at the box office.
In fourth and fifth place, respectively, Focus and Chappie both pulled in about $5.8 million, and cost roughly the same to make, but by far Focus is more successful, especially when taking worldwide gross into account ($101.7 million to $56.7 million). However,...

Cinderella took the top spot this past weekend. The live-action adaptation brought in $70 million. The only positive I would say from this experience is that they didn’t release it in 3D like its counterparts Alice in Wonderland and Oz the Great and Powerful. Disney is sure to be in great spirits as well with the news that Big Hero 6 now ranks as the highest-grossing animated title of 2014 and the studio’s third-highest global release of all time, with $620 million worldwide.
Liam Neeson continues to kick and punch his way down the box office ladder; Run All Night earned an estimated $11 million. Far from expectation and from what he’s used to with his work in Taken. Run All Night opened lower than A Walk Among the Tombstones (which only earned $26.3 in total domestic ally).
Meanwhile, Chappie was down an estimated 56% and Vince Vaughn’s Unfinished Business dropped out of the top ten,...

It didn't reach the heights of "Oz: The Great and Powerful" or "Alice in Wonderland," but you can bet the executives at Walt Disney Studios are overjoyed at the opening of their live action version of "Cinderella" this weekend. Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of the classic fairy tale opened to a magical $70 million to easily take the no. 1 spot at the weekend box office. "Cinderella" reportedly played to a massive 77% female audience and earned an A Cinemascore grade. The family flick will have some competition next weekend as "Insurgent" is poised to steal some of its teenage girl and twentysomething female audience, but "Cinderella" is already a hit that will contribute to all aspects of the Disney empire. Debuting far behind in second place was Jaume Collet-Serra's "Run All Night." The Liam Neeson thriller earned a positive A- Cinemascore grade and mixed to positive reviews, but earned just $11 million over the three-day.

"The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" was a surprise hit three years ago and earned a legion of fans around the world. The ensemble drama about a group of British senior citizens taking up residence in an Indian hotel was missing one key moment, however. Oscar winners Judi Dench and Maggie Smith barely had a scene together. Ol Parker, who wrote both "Exotic" and the sequel "Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," takes complete responsibility. "I [expletive] up the first time," Parker says speaking to HitFix earlier this month. "I mean they don’t talk. They literally don’t talk for the first movie." That's not entirely true. Evelyn (Dench) and Muriel (Smith) do have a brief exchange towards the end of the film, but it sadly alludes to their lack of screen time. Muriel notes, "We haven't talked much, you and I" and Evelyn replies, "My looks evidently." Parker recalls, "You’ve got these two titans,...

Director Neill Blomkamp took the weekend box office with his latest science fiction epic Chappie, though it is not as impressive a debut as it might seem. With the box office even down from last week, Chappie and its estimated $13.3 million is a weak start for a $49 million budgeted film…and it has not seen much better in overseas earnings. Focus, on the other hand, is seeing some pick up thanks to overseas performance, but an estimated $10 million is still keeping it from little more than tepid against its $50.1 million budget. No word on the success of third-place finisher, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as its budget is not reported, but with an estimated $8.6 million it is likely doing a decent start on its own merits, as the original film only cost about $10 million to make.

2015 has been a banner year so far for Hollywood's movie studios and theater owners. This past weekend, however, is one they would like to forget. Sony Pictures and Mrc's "Chappie" came in at no. 1 with an estimated $13.3 million. That was significantly below pre-release polling which forecast as $20 million plus debut. It was also director Neill Blomkamp's worst performing debut so far and star Hugh Jackman's smallest opening since 2008's "Australia." "Chappie" earned mostly negative reviews with just a 40 rating on Metacritic and a 30% "fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes as well as a below average B grade on Cinemascore. That does not bode well for the long term playability of the $49 million budgeted Sci-Fi thriller. Last weekend's champ, Will Smith and Margot Robbie's "Focus," dropped to second place with another $10 million and $34.5 million in just 10 days. The Warner Bros. release looks like it will end up somewhere around $50 million domestic.

Two big films for you this weekend! First, we have .Chappie. from .District 9. writer/director Neill Blomkamp. This one.s about artificial intelligence and it stars Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel, and Sigourney Weaver. Sharlto Copley voices Chappie and even Anderson Cooper stars as.himself! Is this better than the last Blomkamp movie, the half-baked .Elysium?. And is this worthy of praise ala .District 9?.
And then, we have .The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.. The whole gang, including director John Madden, return for the sequel. But, do we really need another .Best Exotic Marigold Hotel?. This one stars Patel as well where he plays Sonny and this time, he wants to open another Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Is this as good as the first one?
See my thoughts on the new .Chappie. and .The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel..

If you're heading to the multiplex this weekend there's a good chance that you'll be catching a movie starring Dev Patel. It's a rare occurrence for any actor, but the "Slumdog Millionaire" breakout has the fortune of having two different films open in the U.S. today. In Neill Blomkamp's "Chappie," Patel plays a robotics designer and computer programmer who brings the title character to life in a dangerous and unstable environment. His other new release is Fox Searchlight's "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," where he reprises his role as Sonny, a young entrepreneur who runs what is effectively a retirement home for British Expats in Jaipur, India. The surviving members of this geriatric crew, including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton and Celia Imrie, are all back for more life affirming adventures as Richard Gere checks in to stir things up. Don't worry, the venerable Maggie Smith...
