The '90s were a crazy time for comic books, especially when independent companies like Image Comics rose in popularity. Gen13 and the art of J. Scott Campbell are prime examples of this. So, it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise that one of the creators of Gen13 also created one of the most iconic superhero outfits in all comic book lore. One that is still debated and cosplayed to this day, I am talking about Jim Lee and Rogue’s Savage Land outfit, first appearing in Uncanny X-Men #269.

Now, comic book readers will travel back with Rogue: The Savage Land, as writer Tim Seeley and up-and-coming artist Zulema Scotto Lavina expand on the story first introduced in 1990.

Rogue and Magnetos lost love story is set to be told by Marvel Comics, as the unlikely X-Men couple return to the Savage Land for an all-new miniseries. Set during the cataclysmic events of Uncanny X-Men #269-275, Rogue: The Savage Land promises to be full of jungle action, untamed romance and more when it launches early next year.

First announced by Polygon Rogue: The Savage Land written by Tim Seeley, with art by Zulema Scotto Lavina, who makes her Marvel Comics debut with the five-issue miniseries. The series returns to the late 1980s/early 1990s Uncanny X-Men run by comics superstars Chris Claremont and Jim Lee.

The trailer opens in some kind of gas station/convenience store. This sort of puts to rest speculation that the film was going to be set in some kind of post-apocalyptic future akin to the Old Man Logan storyline that allegedly inspired the film. Instead, this looks like a kind of grim-but-passable near-future rather than the burnt-out dystopia favoured by most X-Men incarnations.

On the plus side, that does mean the events of X-Men: Days Of Future Past...

In Ultimate X-Men #4-6, writer Mark Millar and artists Adam Kubert and Andy Kubert continue to amp up the action with a pair of Sentinel assaults in the final two chapters while also giving Cyclops, Quicksilver, and Wolverine much needed character development. Millar continues to portray Magneto as the mutant Hitler (Cyclops even invokes Godwin’s Law in a “father/son” chat with him.), but his work with Xavier is slimy as well. Sure, he seems like a good guy, but he messes with Cyclops’ brain chemistry to try to get him not leave the team and concludes the “Tomorrow People” arc with Ming the Merciless-type stare while revealing he has a secret plan that might involve Wolverine.

The third issue of Marvel’s mega-event drastically slows down the pace of the series by focusing primarily of Sheriff Strange’s hunt for the sinister Cabal and Doom’s existential identity crisis. But, even though the scope of the issue is much narrower than previous installments, the progression of the overall story continues uninterrupted, and everything that the mini-series is building to is left unhindered. Given the tendency of event comics to drag on needlessly (Secret Invasion, and Age of Ultron), seeing Secret Wars proceed into its middle act with full steam is a good omen of things to come.

Readers have already been introduced to Battleworld, and for those not reading any of the tie-ins, the main series does a good job of conveying the intricacies of all these semi-autonomous regions.

Shortly before the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 midseason premiere Aftershocks ended, Marvel debuted an official reveal of Riana's Inhuman transformation. This first look gives us a very clear idea of what actress Ruth Negga has become on the show. If you're waiting for the West Coast premiere, trust us, it isn't pretty!

In Aftershocks, Coulson's team must deal with the consequences of their war with Hydra as shocking revelations threaten to tear them apart. Hydra makes a dangerous move that may involve a traitor in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s midst. This all leads into the exciting action of next week's episode Who You Really Are, which debuts on March 10th.

Fans have been waiting to see the results of Raina's Inhuman transformation since that first glimpse of what she'd become at the conclusion of the midseason finale, and although we've had a few teases here and there along the way, we finally got to see her in all her glory in tonight's episode, "Aftershocks". Many speculated that Raina would actually be an incarnation of the Savage Land's Raina from the Marvel Comics, but some have also guessed that she might become Naja; a new character who was recently introduced in the Inhuman comic series. Judging from the pic below, I'd say that's the more likely. Oh yes, as you can see a character (Fitz) said the word "Inhuman" for the first time too. Plus, the transformation undergone by Skye and Raina is officially known as "Terrigenesis" -- and that eyeless fella glimpsed at the end of the last episode?...

The prevailing theory is that this Raina is actually an incarnation of the Marvel Comics Raina (a member of the Saurid race from the Savage Land), and the more we see of the plant-like Inhuman she became at the end of the midseason finale of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D the more likely that's looking. To give a brief history of the Savage Land, it’s a prehistoric land in the comic books that is a warm, tropical preserve hidden within the frozen tundra of Antarctica. It was was created during the Triassic period by the alien Nuwali for another alien race, the Beyonders, for observation and research purposes. They used climate-controlling technology to keep it tropical amidst the otherwise freezing temperatures.

Ultimate Spider-Man is coming back for Season 3. A still was shown from the third season featuring Spidey with the Avengers - the roster was the same as the one for "Avengers Assemble." An episode of "Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H." was shown which included a trip to the Savage Land and fights with dinosaurs and Sauron. Devil Dinosaur also makes a cameo in the episode. After months of confusing bait ‘n’ switches, time travel anachronisms, and numerous (and it turns out, pointless) superhero deaths, we come to the finale of Marvel’s latest Event with Age of Ultron #10.

Before getting into the issue proper, I’ll say that the way Marvel have hit all of their deadlines on the numerous comics this Event has had in the tight timeframe they gave it, is impressive. Marvel waited until all of the issues had been drawn before they began releasing them and I think all future Events should be done like this – 4 months, knock ‘em out, get it done, no more year-long story arcs or prolonged releases because of missed deadlines. This is the winning formula – publishing-wise that is.

On June 4, Gazillion’s Marvel Heroes Mmoarpg launched to the public. And I’m here to tell you that it’s a heck of a lot of fun to play, especially if you are a Marvel fan.

Marvel Heroes is a free-to-play PC game featuring a story written by Brian Michael Bendis (which begins with a set of prequel motion comics that you can watch here). I covered the basics of the game in my previous Marvel Heroes column, so I’m going to move right into my review here.

Brian Michael Bendis deftly handles the multiple timelines that he has set up in the previous issues and resolves some plot threads in a logical fashion while setting up a big finale that could go either way for the heroes of the Marvel universe. He uses well-written dialogue and callbacks to earlier events of the series to move the plot forward even though fisticuffs are kept at a minimum in this issue. Carlos Pacheco and Jose Villarubia continue to making interesting contrasts between the Bronze and Modern Age comics through little details in their art. They also give Bendis room to cram loads and loads of dialogue.

Young Avengers #5, Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Marvel

The conclusion of Gillen & McKelvie’s first arc sees the proper (re)formation of the teen team, a revelation or two about new addition Kid Loki (inherited from Kieron Gillen’s recently-concluded Journey Into Mystery run) and of course a couple of innovatively-rendered fight scenes from Jamie McKelvie, who somehow manages to turn a pentagram into an incredibly effective And plot-related page layout. Check it out, if only for that sight.

Not that it’s the only thing worth reading in the book. The run so far has been filled with inventive artistry (issue #4’s floorplan(!) raid by Marvel Boy has to be seen to be believed) and Gillen’s quick wit and knowing asides, which could make for an aloof and potentially alienating series if not for the pathos both writer and artist inject into the teenage angst and dastardly plotting,...

Picking ten artists out of the vast array of talent working in comics today is an impossible task. These artists were chosen based on the uniqueness of their style compared to the “house” style of Marvel and DC, their ability to create character, setting, and plot through their art, and also on the quality of the covers that they’ve done. Without further ado (and in honor of the late Wizard magazine), here are the top ten hottest current artists in comics in no particular order.

Jamie McKelvie is closely involved in the storytelling process with Kieron Gillen for Young Avengers often bouncing ideas off him at the pub.

This June, Savage Wolverine will switch from Frank Cho's Savage Land story arc to a tale from Avenging Spider-Man collaborators Zeb Wells and Joe Madureira. While it's widely believed that it was initially meant for that title, the focus will mostly be on Wolverine and Elekta as we can see from the following image (more than likely the cover for August's issue #8). As I’ve said before, I’m a huge X-Men fan. As an awkward, lonely teenager who didn’t feel like he really belonged anywhere, the X-Men gave me a sense that I was not alone. They were really the reason I started collecting comics in the first place, and I’ve managed to stick with them, through the good and the bad. For my first comics article on this site, I decided to rank the X-Men writers. But as I went about doing this, I realized ranking all of them might be difficult.

So instead, I wrote about the 5 Best and 5 Worst X-Men Writers. And when the article was released, there were a number of comments from people talking about how they felt a certain writer deserved to make it into one of the coveted five spots. I felt this writer was close and I almost considered giving him...

Inspired by previous fan creations (and wanting to help his girlfriend with her cosplay), multimedia artist Jesse James Allen created this replica Gordon Freeman's weapon of mass flinging.

Allen, who posts on YouTube under the name Savage Land Pictures, explains that he wanted to create something to accompany his girlfriend's Alyx Vance costume as he made his first attempt at building a prop. Describing his gun as more of an "interpretation" rather than straight-up replica, Allen says he constructed it using Pvc, foam, old airsoft parts and 200 Led lights powered by a 12-volt battery.

If you’re a fan of the Jason Aaron/Wolverine & the X-Men series like me, prepare to be disappointed with this issue as it has nothing whatsoever to do with it. It has Wolverine in it but no other X-Men, just Sue Richards, and it’s written by Matt Kindt.

This is one of the weirder tie-ins to the Event in that I’m not quite sure what the point of it was. With other tie-ins like the Black Widow one, it explained how she came to be deformed, which the main series had avoided mentioning. With the Fantastic Four tie in, we found out what happened to the rest of the Four. There was a point to these tie-ins.

With this one, you need to have read Age of Ultron #6 to understand what Logan and Sue are doing in Fury’s flying car in the past. But if you’ve read that issue,...

The heroes have gathered in the untouched Savage Land and Nick Fury has come up with a plan – use Doctor Doom’s time platform to head into the future where Ultron is and take him on. As a small group of heroes go off to do just that, Wolverine has a better idea for the time platform – go back in time and kill Hank Pym before he invents Ultron. Sacrifice one to save a billion. But will it work – or make things worse?

Unlike the last issue’s cover, this issue does deliver on its promise of heroes on Ultron action as the future team of Fury, Cap, Red Hulk, Storm and a few others do battle with wave after wave of Ultron heads (apparently in the future Ultron drones are just mega-powerful heads rather than the full body ones sent into the past/our present).

But after I put...

Despite the action packed cover, issue #5 in the Age of Ultron Event has very little action. Which isn’t to say it’s bad at all, but this is definitely a transition issue that sets up the sure-to-be action packed final half of this series. The heroes are all gathered in the Savage Land (which has been somehow overlooked by Ultron) and head off to a hidden Nick Fury stronghold where they find – Nick Fury (the non-Sam Jackson kind)! Together they devise a plan of action for defeating Ultron once and for all. But as one group of heroes heads off on their mission leaving behind the rest should they fail, another hero has a very different idea of how to deal with everything that’s happened – and he’s not gonna be stopped, bub.

Strangely, this is another issue where this group of heroes stand/sit around and talk.

After a mediocre third issue, Bendis and Hitch kick things up several gears and the story gets a much-needed jump. Luke Cage and She-Hulk are in the heart of Ultron City, built over the remains of Manhattan, to barter with Ultron only to find someone unexpected in his place with yet another unexpected twist to the tale. Things get more complicated with this Ultron fella but I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t read the issue yet.

Meanwhile Red Hulk and Taskmaster have a “disagreement” in Chicago, and Moon Knight and Black Widow in San Francisco come up with an unused plan put together by Nick Fury for just such a doomed occasion as the Ultron occupation. The heroes underneath Central Park finally make a move and head off to the Savage Land to recuperate and form a plan of attack.

For anyone who’s interested in gaming, a whole lot of gaming news came out at the Pax East gaming convention this past weekend.

Given my devotion to Marvel and my affinity for playing any game that features Deadpool ever, I was particularly keen to hear the latest news about Marvel Heroes, the free-to-play Mmoarpg (Massively Multiplayer Online Action Role Playing Game) created by David Brevik (of Diablo and Diablo 2 fame) and currently in production at Gazillion Entertainment.

Marvel Heroes, if you haven’t heard about it, is being designed as a free-to-play PC game in which players can advance through the game without spending any money (although there will be a store available for optional purchases). The story for the game, which centers around Doctor Doom and the Cosmic Cube, is written by well-known and multiple award-winning Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis, and Marvel artists are producing comic-style cut-scenes to accompany that story.

As of right now, there's a Closed Beta running for Marvel Heroes, an upcoming action RPG/Mmo staring many of your favorite Marvel heroes and villains! If you've ever played action RPGs like Diablo and Torchlight, and had lots of fun playing X-Men Legends 1&2 as well as Ultimate Alliance 1&2, then you'll want to check this out! With rumors abounding that the popular storylines "Planet Hulk" and "World War Hulk" may serve as the basis for the next Hulk movie and third Avengers movie respectively, fans are looking back to those storylines to see what elements the movies might borrow if the rumors prove true.

One of the most intriguing aspects of those storylines were the allies that Hulk gathered during "Planet Hulk" and brought back to Earth to aid him in wreaking havoc during "World War Hulk." That assemblage of aliens, known as the Warbound, are represented by species from every corner of the universe, united by their loyalty to the Hulk who proved himself a worthy leader on the planet Sakaar.
