Arrow is gearing up for one of its most ambitious months to date, unveiling a stacked April line-up that spans everything from indie horror debuts to rediscovered thrillers, cult oddities and a treasure trove of Japanese V-Cinema gems. With a release calendar that reads like a wishlist for the genre-obsessed, the streaming platform is making good on its promise to deliver bold, boundary-pushing content that goes far beyond the mainstream.

From the creators of found footage movie The Houses October Built comes Will Helm, an upcoming proof-of-concept horror short starring Spencer Charnas from Ice Nine Kills.

Directed by Bobby Roe and written by Zack Andrews & Bobby Roe, Will Helm is hitting the festival circuit this Halloween season, and Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive preview.

The plot of Will Helm is under wraps, but it will be premiering at Sitges and Screamfest next month. It will also show at the Knoxville Horror Film Fest before an anniversary screening of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare at the drive-in part of the festival.

From what we gather, there is an unofficial A Nightmare on Elm Street component in Will Helm and it acts as something of a meta combo piece for the Wes Craven classic.

Bobby Roe tells Bloody Disgusting, “We are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Smile, Night Swim and Lights Out.

Deadline reports that Judd Apatow has been tapped to direct Cola Wars for Sony, who shelled out $1 million in April for the pitch. The film is based on the true story of “Pepsi’s attempt to challenge Coca-Cola’s century-long reign as the world’s top cola” in the mid-1980s. Steven Spielberg is also on board and will produce the project through his Amblin Entertainment production company.

The Cola Wars brought us many memorable events, including the disastrous launch of New Coke and the Pepsi commercial that left Michael Jackson with severe burns. The film is billed as “the ultimate underdog tale of history’s most iconic second-place contender (Pepsi) vying for the No. 1 spot (Coca-Cola).” Jason Shuman (Acapulco) and Ben Queen (Cars 2) are penning the script for the project, and while it’s still in the early stages, it could be a fun flick.

The iconic Steven Spielberg has been focusing more on human dramas as of late, except for the occasional special effects-laden vehicles like Ready Player One and The Bfg — even sitting out Indiana Jones for the first time with the last entry, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. However, Deadline has now revealed that Universal Pictures has reserved a release date for May 15, 2026, for what is being described as an “original event film” that has been created by and will be directed by Spielberg.

It is not revealed what the event film is. However, it was reported last month that Spielberg would reunite with frequent collaborator David Koepp for an original UFO movie that has been kept very secretive. The UFO movie is said to be based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that would be all the information given at this point.

It’s been a while since Steven Spielberg has dabbled in the world of extra-terrestrials, but according to a report from Variety, the acclaimed director is working on a UFO movie which will likely be his next project.

Sources told Variety that the UFO movie is based on Steven Spielberg’s own original idea and that David Koepp is writing the screenplay. Unfortunately, that’s all the information we have at this point, but a UFO movie from the man who gave us Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is hard to ignore. Koepp has penned a handful of Spielberg movies, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Fans of 1995’s Mute Witness have two big reasons to celebrate this week, as the film is finally getting a brand new physical media release And it’s finally coming to streaming.

Inspector Dave Toschi needs a night off. After years of chasing the so-called Zodiac Killer, Toschi thought he had found his man, only for his captain to shoot him down, citing insufficient evidence to make an arrest. At the movie theater later on, the picture Toschi watches with his wife doesn’t make him feel any better. It’s Dirty Harry, the 1971 movie in which Clint Eastwood‘s Inspector Harry Callahan does battle with a killer called Scorpio.

Frustrated by what he’s seeing, Toschi heads to the lobby for a smoke. As viewers shuffle out after him, one remarks, “Dave, that Harry Callahan did a hell of a job with your case.”

“Yeah, no need for due process, right?” Toschi responds sarcastically to indicate his frustration.

16 years after the faux trailer debuted as part of Grindhouse, Eli Roth finally delivered the feature version of Thanksgiving. There were no leftovers, but among the special features on the slasher’s home video release is an audio commentary by Roth and producer-writer Jeff Rendell.

Here are 10 things I learned from the Thanksgiving commentary…

1. The concept dates back to the filmmakers’ childhoods.

Thanksgiving is based on Roth’s faux trailer from Grindhouse, but its origins date back even further than 2007. Best friends since kindergarten, Roth and Rendell grew up in Newton, Massachusetts (about an hour from Plymouth) watching horror movies together.

Inspired by a pivotal theatrical viewing of Silent Night, Deadly Night circa 1984, they longed for a definitive Thanksgiving slasher in the vein of the other holiday horrors.

It was announced last year that Steven Spielberg was developing a new movie based on Bullitt, the classic action thriller movie starring Steve McQueen, and the remake has received a promising update.

Kristie Macosko Krieger, one of Steven Spielberg’s producing partners, spoke to GamesRadar+ about the upcoming Bullitt remake. “I’m producing it. Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, they are working on the story,” Krieger said. “I hope we have a script soon as the writers’ strike put us behind a bit. But they are working on it – I couldn’t tell you if it’s the next movie we are making as I don’t know at this point. I think that it will be a wildly entertaining film.“

Like us, you’re probably very intrigued by the thought of Steven Spielberg moving back into action thriller territory, which is where Bullitt, the proposed reimagining of Steve McQueen’s 1968 cop thriller, seems to be heading.

The legendary director hasn’t really tackled anything of this ilk since that wonderful period in the naughts when he released Catch Me If You Can, War Of The Worlds and Minority Report.

We’ve heard that the project isn’t a straight-up remake, so at this early stage we’re not quite sure what to expect, though it seems logical that Spielberg and his collaborators will be returning to the source novel Bullitt drew from – Robert L Fish’s Mute Witness. Filmmaker Eli Roth has been working within the horror genre nearly exclusively since 2002, as his only non-horror feature to date is his 2018 remake of "Death Wish." The upcoming sci-fi/action video game adaptation "Borderlands" is set to break Roth's horror streak a second time when it (hopefully) releases next year. Since seven of Roth's nine films are horror, it's a little surprising to realize that "Thanksgiving," the feature-length adaptation of Roth's faux-trailer from 2007's "Grindhouse," is Roth's first official slasher movie.

As such, "Thanksgiving" sees Roth in classic slasher mode, paying tribute to a wide variety of predecessors in the subgenre ranging from classics like "Halloween" 1978 and "Scream" 1996 to more under-seen slasher gems like "Mother's Day" and "Happy Birthday to Me." Despite Roth's long and varied career, "Thanksgiving" was no simple parade, as he developed and shot the film within a single calendar year.

There isn't a more ardent devotee to the horror genre working in Hollywood today than Eli Roth. This is especially true of 1980s horror. The advent of the home video era also coincided with the rise of the slasher film craze. October is usually thought of as the prime time for horror, but the best horror movie of 2023 — for that matter, the most deliriously entertaining horror movie since Wes Craven‘s original “Scream” — arrives not for Halloween but for Thanksgiving. It’s a movie horror fans have been eagerly anticipating ever since director Eli Roth created a fake “Thanksgiving” trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s “Grindhouse” in 2007, and the feature version that Roth and writer Jeff Rendell have extrapolated from that hilarious and gory short is well worth the wait. Their “Thanksgiving” is an ingeniously structured, elegantly composed thrill machine. It’s also a gleeful assault on good taste; it’s what you get when a 1970s or ’80s Canadian tax shelter thriller like “Prom Night” or “My Bloody Valentine” is directed by a true artist.

For the past decade, Roth has nimbly moved through different genres – erotic thriller (“Knock Knock”), revenge movie (“Death Wish”), family fantasy (“The House with a Clock in Its Walls”), nature documentary (“Fin”) and big budget video game adaptation (next year’s “Borderlands”). But now he’s back with a down-and-dirty horror movie, this time centered around one of the happiest time of year.

In “Thanksgiving,” adapted from a fake trailer that Roth had made for Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s “Grindhouse” project, a superstore’s super sale leads to tragedy. A year later a masked man in a pilgrim costume, known as John Carver, starts taking out the townspeople involved in the tragedy, one by one. And, yes, the kills are just as creative and stomach-churning as you’d expect from the man behind “Hostel,” “Cabin Fever” and “The Green Inferno.

November 1st is a tough day for horror hounds. The decorations are still up, the air remains crisp, but the spirit has seemingly moved on, perhaps vanquished by the sun. Alamo Drafthouse says to hell with all of that and has announced two month’s worth of genre joy that’ll take you from Dia de los Muertos to Christmas Eve with minimal whiplash.

Terror Tuesday is a weekly slash-and-thrash through the world of horror, and they’ve booked a number of holiday-tinged forever classics mixed in with new canon-busting entries, many of which are screening from new, sparkling scans. The film is set for its world premiere at this year’s FrightFest on August 27 and gets its general release on October 16, 2023 from 101 Films in the United Kingdom.

We’re big fans of writer/director Anthony Waller‘s riveting 1995 thriller Mute Witness (buy a copy at This Link) here at Arrow in the Head, which is why we even put together a Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video on the film. You can watch that in the embed above. And since we’ve been doing our part in trying to let everyone know how good this movie is, we’re glad to hear that it’s about to receive new releases. Jinga Films has sold distribution rights to the restored cult classic to both Arrow Film and AMC Networks’ streaming platform Shudder!

Due to these sales, we can expect to see a new physical media release of Mute Witness from Arrow Video sometime in the near future. The movie will also be streaming on Shudder in the US, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

After the success of his “West Side Story” remake, Steven Spielberg is continuing to mine the canon of 1960s cinema for inspiration. According to a new report from Deadline, the Oscar winner is attached to direct an action film based on “Bullitt,” the 1968 film starring Steve McQueen. Rather than a remake, the project is reportedly a new original story featuring the character of Frank Bullitt, originally played by McQueen.

“Spotlight” scribe Josh Singer is set to write the script, and Steve McQueen’s son Chad and granddaughter Molly McQueen will board the film as executive producers. Spielberg has been eyeing the project for years, but drawn-out negotiations with the McQueen estate over the character have caused him to prioritize other films. However, it appears that the two sides have reached an agreement and are ready to move forward with the film.

Coming off of one of his best films this century this far, his new take on West Side Story, Steven Spielberg’s next film is already in the can, The Fablemans, which draws from his real-life upbringing and will open this Thanksgiving. Always a director with more than one project on his mind, he’s now lined up another film.

Deadline reports he’s attached to direct a new film for Warner Bros. based on Steve McQueen’s character of Frank Bullitt from Peter Yates 1968 film Bullitt. With that film based on the 1963 novel Mute Witness, it followed a San Francisco cop, Bullitt, who was protecting a witness who gets killed by the mob, so he investigates. Scripted by Josh Singer, the film won’t be a remake, however, but a new story featuring the character.

Josh Singer is set to write the screenplay, with regular Spielberg collaborator Kristie Macosko Krieger on board to produce with the director. McQueen’s son Chad McQueen and granddaughter Molly McQueen are executive producing after a lengthy negotiation process with the McQueen estate to secure the rights to the character.

Carquake! rumbles its way to Trailers from Hell this week, with TV writer Alan Spencer introducing "Bullitt," Peter Yates’ supercharged detective blockbuster starring Steve McQueen. The film was a transitional one for Hollywood, introducing the concept of kinetic action into the gumshoe mix and making a superstar out of former TV actor McQueen. It was his favorite role. Ironically Robert L Pike’s source novel “Mute Witness” had been first purchased as a vehicle for Spencer Tracy as an aging New York cop. It was retrofitted for McQueen and relocated to San Francisco, where its groundbreaking car chase scenes were shot with new lightweight Arriflex cameras.

This one’s an oddity, folks: a remake that was actually based on a breathtakingly brilliant idea for a variation on a movie that was a classic to begin with, that nevertheless utterly failed to live up to its promise.

Peter Yates, who died this past weekend at age 81, was one of several British directors invited to make movies in The States in the 1960s, all of whom had a particular and rare filmmaker’s gift for capturing a sense – the feel — of a setting often better than native-born filmmakers could. Yates’ obits talked about the car chase in Bullitt (1968), the Oscar nods for Breaking Away (1979) and The Dresser (1983), but they missed how this gift he shared with his UK colleagues was such a critical part of what made his best work so special.

The new movie – Hellraiser: Revelations – is being prepped by Victor Garcia from a script by Gary Tunnicliffe and centres on two friends who release the infamous Pinhead into their world and suffer the consequences. Hitchcock, the brilliant self-publicist who probably devised his own sobriquet "Master of Suspense", virtually invented the movie cameo en route to becoming the world's most recognisable director. His first screen appearance was in a newsroom sequence in The Lodger (1926). Initially, the signature walk-ons were spasmodic, before becoming a feature of each picture after his move to the Us, beginning with Rebecca (1940), where he is seen outside a telephone kiosk being used by George Sanders. Each reflects wittily on the movie.
