Chinese-American star Bai Ling is at the AFM with her directorial debut.
Chinese-American cult film star Bai Ling is at AFM this week talking about her directing debut My Quarantine Romance With Toilet Paper to the industry, poolside at market hub, Le Méridien Delfina.
Bai, whose acting credits include Red Corner starring Richard Gere and The Crow with Brandon Lee, self-funded the completed film that began shooting in Beverly Hills in August 2020. Inspiration, she says, came from her experiences of the pandemic, having arrived back in Los Angeles after a trip to Kazakhstan, only to be met with lockdown and the ensuing toilet paper shortage.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

Wolfgang Petersen, the German director whose films include The Perfect Storm, Air Force One and Das Boot, has died. He was 81. Petersen died peacefully Friday at his Brentwood residence from pancreatic cancer, in the arms of his wife of 50 years, Maria Antoinette.
Wolfgang Petersen: A Career In Photos
Petersen began his career in Germany but answered the call of Hollywood after his 1981 breakout film, the claustrophobic submarine WWII epic Das Boot (The Boat), was nominated for six Academy Awards. Two of those went to Petersen for adapted screenplay and directing, and he also was nominated for a BAFTA Award and DGA Award. The film starred Jürgen Prochnow as the U-boat captain, who became a good example of Petersen’s action characters.

The DGA’s current film and TV pact doesn’t expire until June 30, 2023, but the guild is already gearing up for those contract negotiations. Director Jon Avnet has been named chair of the negotiating committee, and directors Karen Gaviola and Todd Holland have been named co-chairs. The DGA National Board unanimously approved their appointments. DGA national executive director Russell Hollander will be the guild’s chief negotiator.
“We don’t yet know when our next negotiations will take place, but we are looking ahead as we carefully examine the creative and economic issues faced by our members working in film and television,” said Lesli Linka Glatter, the DGA’s newly elected president. “As part of that process, we have asked three of our prominent feature and television directors – Jon Avnet, Karen Gaviola and Todd Holland – to head our negotiations, and they have graciously agreed. The Good Fight and Evil creators Robert and Michelle King are staying at their longtime studio home, CBS Studios. But this was not a straight-forward overall deal renewal. The big new five-year pact, said to be in the high eight figures with a potential to cross the nine-figure mark in success, came after months of negotiations.
It was touch and go for awhile with multiple suitors pursuing the prolific duo, including Universal Television, I hear. In the end, CBS Studios stepped up to keep two of their top creators in the fold, extending their tenure to 17 years.
Under the new agreement, CBS Studios will continue to have exclusive rights to produce content created by the Kings through their King Size Productions banner across all platforms. Liz Glotzer remains president of King Size Productions.
The Kings have successfully juggled multiple series for most of their 12 years to date at CBS Studios.

Prolific TV creators/showrunners Michelle and Robert King have signed with UTA. The duo and their production banner, King Size Productions, helmed by Liz Glotzer, will be represented by the agency in all areas.
The Kings are changing agencies after many years at Paradigm. The duo came into play when their longtime lead agent, Andy Patman, last month left Paradigm to co-head the lit department of A3 Agency, where he was joined by three other former Paradigm lit agents. UTA is currently the only Big 4 agency to represent writers after recently signing an agreement with the WGA.
Michelle and Robert King have been creative collaborators for over 20 years and married for over 30 years. It's 1994, and aspiring filmmaker Kerry Conran sits down with his Macintosh IIci to begin work on a short film that's a throwback to the buccaneering adventure serials of the '30s and '40s. In those post-Jurassic Park days, computer-generated visual effects technology was still in its infancy, but Conran, a former CalArts student, saw the potential to tell a story he'd dreamed about. After four years of painstaking work with blue screen and his already-obsolete Mac, he fashioned a black and white teaser trailer for The World of Tomorrow.
Alongside Conran for the entirety of the journey was his brother Kevin Conran, who served as production and costume designer on both the short and eventual feature film. Speaking to Digital Spy from his home in California, Kevin recalled the lightbulb moment when his brother first pitched him the idea.

Films set in Shanghai, Chinese scientists saving the day, Beijing portrayed as the promised land … Us film-makers are flattering their way into the world's fastest-growing movie market
Last week North Korea threatened America with a nuclear strike. This week sees the UK release of Red Dawn, which features a North Korean invasion of the Us. An impressive instance of Hollywood's far-sightedness? Not quite.
Red Dawn is the reboot of a cold war thriller that's much cherished in some quarters. Back in 1984, when the original appeared, the aggressor could only have been the Soviet Union. With the new film comes a new commie bogeyman – but it was not supposed to be North Korea. These days, it's not so much Kim Jong-un's eccentric dictatorship that makes Americans tremble, it's their newfound rival for superpower status, China.

The Daily Beast reports that Chinese microblogging service Sina Weibo, China's version of Twitter (which is blocked there) with upwards of 400 million users, was sent spinning last week when Brad Pitt started an account, inaugurating it with this message: "It is the truth. Yup, I'm coming..." The Weibo message generated tens of thousands of responses, primarily positive, with more than 160K new followers added to the account. Then, on December 8, Pitt's message disappeared. What happened? Part of the initial excitement surrounding Pitt's supposed visit to China stemmed from the actor's presumed ban from the country. In 1997, Pitt played the young Dalai Lama's Austrian tutor in "Seven Years in Tibet," a film that didn't sit well with the Chinese government for its violent and "biased" portrayal of local officials. Martin Scorsese's "Kundun" and Richard Gere's "Red Corner" invoked the same...

This past weekend, two pricey fantasy epics hit movie screens in the form of Warner Bros.' swords-and-sandal sequel "Wrath Of The Titans" and Relativity's comic fairy tale "Mirror Mirror." And while their audiences were, in theory, different (with Tarsem's Snow White picture skewing much younger), neither fared as well as hoped, "Wrath of the Titans" ending up with barely half of the original film's opening weekend, around $35 million, while "Mirror Mirror" failed to clear the $20 million mark, despite the presence of Julia Roberts.
In part, it's because they were following on the second weekend of colossal smash "The Hunger Games," which topped the box office with another $65 million or so. Sunday was a painfully beautiful day for a hung-over walk in Park City. Set in a bed of flawless blue, the sun refracted joyfully off slopes washed white by fresh snowfall and volunteers in neon safety vests, shoveling out paths for fest goers. Thankfully, the quality of the scotch I'd downed at last night's Save The Date party made the hangover more sufferable than your garden variety lager-derived nausea. It was a good thing because I was determined not to miss this morning's screening of Arbitrage at the Eccles, one of the festival's gold-plated marquee titles. Although Sundance projects an ethos of half-bearded hipsters and diffident indie chicks, behind the friendly volunteers and plebian shuttle system lies a firm foundation of money and privilege. Occasionally, that aura of aristocracy wafts down from the ski slopes, and it certainly suffused the Eccles auditorium when Arbitrage screened. As filmmakers struggle to craft...

Memorable roles in American Gigolo and An Officer And A Gentleman seem a long time ago
Allow me to favour you with a little movie list. Try to guess what they have in common and I'll meet you in paragraph two: No Mercy, Power, Miles From Home, Mr Jones, Final Analysis, Sommersby, Intersection, King David, Red Corner, The Jackal, Red Corner, The Mothman Prophecies, Unfaithful, Shall We Dance, Amelia.
I know, I know: it looks like the Razzie Winners' display at some bleak video store in the sixth circle of Hell, or perhaps the entire directorial oeuvre of Alan Smithee handily quarantined to prevent them from infecting the poor innocent DVDs on neighbouring shelves. But let me straighten you out: they all star one Richard Tiffany Gere, who can be seen this week in another of his patented misfires, Brooklyn's Finest.

Chinese-American actress Bai Ling had her breakout role in 1997's Red Corner, a courtroom drama in which she defended Richard Gere from a corrupt government trial - romancing him, naturally, along the way. But since then, Ling has played a streak of bad girls and scantily-clad seductresses that put her equally-sensual public persona front and center, in films ranging from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow to this year's Crank: High Voltage. Even in her latest film, the independent drama A Beautiful Life, Ling plays a stripper - albeit one with a heart of gold.
Some might argue that her career choices lean toward female objectification, and they wouldn't be wrong. But there's something wholly empowered about the way Bai Ling tackles her film roles. Sure, she's played her fair share of strippers, prostitutes, and femme fatales, but does it matter if she totally owns and embraces those characters...

Avnet backs up 'Understudy' for Phoenix Pictures
Jon Avnet, who has been focused on the small screen, where he is executive producing and directing the critically acclaimed NBC series Boomtown, will mark his return to features as director and producer of Phoenix Pictures' psychological thriller The Understudy. The project aims to go into production next year. Avnet's most recent big-screen directorial project was 1997's Red Corner. Since then, he has been busy working in television, where, in addition to Boomtown, he wrote, directed and produced the Emmy-winning miniseries Uprising. True to its name, Understudy focuses on an understudy in a Broadway play who finally gets her shot at the leading role, only to sense that she is being undermined in turn by her own understudy.
