Gruesome Italian Stop-Motion Short ‘Playing God,’ Mexican CG Charmer ‘Nube’ Score Oscar Qualification With Animayo Gran Canaria Wins
Image
Spain’s Oscar-qualifying Animayo Gran Canaria animation festival has announced the winners of its 20th anniversary edition, marking two decades of championing animation, VFX and video game cinematics.

This year, an international jury composed of industry veterans from studios like Disney, Skydance and Rodeo FX evaluated 55 short films selected for competition across multiple official sections, which were whittled down by Animayo staff from an initial batch of over 2,000 entries from 84 countries.

The festival’s coveted Grand Jury Award went to “Playing God,” a grim stop-motion story by Italian director Matteo Burani. The film captivated the jury with its atmospheric intensity, masterful animation and sound design. As Spain’s only double Oscar-qualifying animation festival, Animayo’s top honors serve as a launchpad to the Academy Awards. In fact, 2025’s animated short Oscar winner, “In the Shadow of the Cyprus,” earned its initial Oscar qualification at last year’s Animayo.

Angelina Jolie Brought to Tears by Standing Ovation at New Movie's Premiere
Image
The 81st Venice Film Festival began this past August 28th and will continue until next Saturday, September 7th. The festival is set to screen several promising debuts, like Joker: Folie deux, Babygirl, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and more, including Pablo Larrans next film, Maria, starring Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie. This is Jolies return to acting since her role in Eternals in 2021, her reasoning being that her familys needs superseded HollywoodsI needed to be home more with my kids.

NBC reports that after Maria ended, Jolie became teary during the standing ovation, stating that Jolie was similarly taken by the rapturous response, wiping away tears and at time turning her face away from the cheering as she was overcome by emotion. She hugged Larran and the cast of the film, which is sure to be an Oscar contender, putting Jolie in the best actress race for the first time in 15 years. David Duchovny...

David Duchovny Explains How He 'Discovered' Angelina Jolie in His 1997 Movie, Playing God
Image
David Duchovny claims to have "discovered" Angelina Jolie in 1997's Playing God. Jolie's career took off after her role in Playing God, with notable films like Pushing Tin, The Bone Collector, and Girl, Interrupted. Duchovny played a part in Jolie's casting in the movie, recognizing her potential as a star.

David Duchovny has made a bold statement in a recent interview when sharing his feelings about discovering Angelina Jolie while working with the actress back in his 1997 movie Playing God. Although Jolie had made several appearances by the time she worked with Duchovny on the Andy Wilson movie, The X-Files star explained how he played a pivotal role in Jolies casting in the movie.

Playing God was written by Mark Haskell Smith, and centers on a disgraced surgeon who reinvents himself as a "gunshot doctor" in the criminal underworld. Along with Duchovny and Jolie, the film also starred Timothy Hutton,...

Angelina Jolie is easily one of the most recognizable actresses all around the globe. But even she had to start somewhere, and Californication's David Duchovny joked that he played a role in her becoming a huge star.

Angelina Jolie might be one of Hollywood's nepo babies, given that her father is Academy Award-winning actor Jon Voight, but the actress has proven her talent time and time again. Whether it's as an actress, director, or producer, Angelina Jolie has done it all and well. However, during an appearance on Sirius Xm's Radio Andy on Thursday, David Duchovny explained why he feels like he had a hand in "discovering" Angelina Jolie.

Star Trek: Discovery episode 4 review - The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry
James Hunt Oct 11, 2017

Discovery delivers another great modern Star Trek episode in its fourth instalment. Spoilers and geeky spots ahead in our review...

This review contains spoilers.

1.4 The Butcher's Knife Cares Not For The Lamb's Cry

What a title this episode has. If Discovery has done nothing else, it’s brought back the spirit of the original series’ episode titles, which were essentially “how grandiose and Shakespearean can we be in fewer than 10 words”. Turns out: very.

Of course, it’s not completely without meaning. There are lots of butcher’s knives in this episode, and lots of lambs crying. Metaphorically, of course. The most Star Trek thing about this episode was Burnham’s insistence that science and compassion prevail over, like, randomly shooting stuff in the face.

Westworld Season 1 Episode 8 Review: Trace Decay
Apparently The Man in Black was just intrigued enough with Teddy's expanding memories that it was time to talk.

Or he figured since he was tied up and being beaten in the face anyway, maybe Westworld Season 1 Episode 8 was a good time to share. You know, there was a campfire and they were all cozy.

There were quite a few reveals during this hour, and I had no time to process, so be nice. I'm dancing on the edge!

Let's start out where we left of on Westworld Season 1 Episode 7, with the death of Theresa and the confirmation Bernard is a host.

Bernard: Lifelike, but not alive. Pain always exists in the mind; it's always imagined. So what's the difference between my pain and yours, between you and me?

Ford: This was the very question that consumed Arnold, filled him with guilt, eventually drove him mad. The answer always seemed obvious to me.

The Lazarus Effect Blu-Ray Review
I wish I could say that The Lazarus Effect will turn out to be one of this year’s worst horror movies, but I know the genre too well to honestly predict that a rote, paint-by-numbers horror-thriller that squanders a good idea on poorly executed jump scares could hold that distinction.

No, there will be worse horror movies than The Lazarus Effect this year. But that doesn’t mean that this “scarer,” Blumhouse’s latest and most pathetic attempt to birth a franchise yet, is worth your time. Not at all. Chief among its many sins are squandering a premise that actually flickers with promise, a cast packed with fresh-faced talent and a setpiece that could have been genuinely terrifying in the right hands.

It all starts off with an interesting idea: what if scientists, messing with forces they did not understand, played God and brought one of their own...

What’s Up Doc?: Sheffield & AFI Docs Signal the Summer Fest Drought
Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.

Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Ariana Richards, BD Wong, Joseph Mazzello, Martin Ferrero, and Bob Peck in Jurassic Park (1993)
8 questionable life lessons 'Jurassic Park' didn't mean to teach us
Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Ariana Richards, BD Wong, Joseph Mazzello, Martin Ferrero, and Bob Peck in Jurassic Park (1993)
It has been 22 years since “Jurassic Park” captured the imagination of a generation. In that time, it has been absorbed into pop culture via quotes such as “Hold on to your butts” and an irrational love of carnivorous pack predators that would just as soon eat your intestines as look at you. But while the important takeaway from the movie is obviously that Jeff Goldblum should always languish shirtless in every film — and that bringing species back to life that have been extinct for millions of years is a terrible idea — “Jurassic World” is full of other lessons...if you know where to look for them. Lessons like... #1. It’s okay to threaten obnoxious children with dinosaur fossils. There are two types of children in the world: those who love paleontology and those who are wrong. “Jurassic Park” wastes no time in letting the audience know how it feel about the latter.

What’s Up Doc?: Kent Jones, Asif Kapadia & Luc Jacquet Head to Cannes
It should come as no surprise that Cannes Film Festival will play host to Kent Jones’s doc on the touchstone of filmmaking interview tomes, Hitchcock/Truffaut (see photo above). The film has been floating near the top of this list since it was announced last year as in development, while Jones himself has a history with the festival, having co-written both Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. and Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage To Italy, both of which premiered in Cannes. The film is scheduled to screen as part of the Cannes Classics sidebar alongside the likes of Stig Björkman’s Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words, which will play as part of the festival’s tribute to the late starlet, and Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (see trailer below). Newly Engaged Angelina Jolie Turns 37 Today!
Angelina Jolie is known for her amazing acting skills, humanitarian work and always expanding family. However, before all this happened, Jolie was known for her interesting and controversial relationships. In honor of her birthday and new engagement to Brad Pitt, here is a list of 10 relationships Jolie had before meeting Brad! Get ready for some shockers.

Johnny Lee Miller- The two met while filiming Hackers in 1995. Soon after, Miller and Jolie married in 1996. Jolie’s attire to her first wedding was extremely non-traditional. She wore black rubber pants and a white t-shirt, which had Miller’s name written on it using her own blood (I guess she was weird even back then). They couple divorced in 1999 but remain on good terms.

Jenny Shimizu- Jolie had a brief relationship with the model and actress in 1996 after filming Firefox. This was Jolie’s first reported bisexual relationship. Jolie claims she...

‘Fringe’ Season 4 Episode 20 Review: World’s Apart
This week on Fringe, the teams from both universes came together in their endless effort to find and stop David Robert Jones. While Fringe has been renewed for a fifth and final season, the results this week leads me to believe that we just may have seen these worlds collide a final time. The writers are brilliant at introducing us to a completely new journey at the end of each season and this episode seemed to set up very well whatever that new journey will be by closing the bridge between the two universes. We’ve come to love the alt-world so much though, hopefully this will not be the end of our visits there even though it will be for Olivia, Peter, and the gang…minus Lincoln Lee who decided to stay on the other side. Everything worked out for the best for Lee (admit it, you loved alt-Lee more than Lee,...

Schrodinger's Spoilers: How the Cabin in the Woods trailer redefines spoilers, but spoils nothing
Hot on the heels of the recent, tantalising meta-textual poster for Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods, Universal released the much anticipated first trailer for the film earlier this week. On first glance, it appears to be like every other conventional horror movie trailer…until it stabs you in the…wherever expectations are, and bombards you with startling plot twists like flying eyeballs.

But are they really spoilers?

Well, they would be for any normal film, but this is not a normal film.

The brainchild of expectation-subverting genius Joss Whedon (otherwise known as Joss “Subverts Expectations” Whedon) and his protégé Drew Goddard, the long-delayed The Cabin in the Woods has been talked about for years for its originality, genre-deconstructy-ness, and preponderance of twists; as Joss decribes the film, it's “the horror movie to end all horror movies”.

It's the film that’s set to be as twisty as a pretzel.

Let Me In Director Returns to Vampires with The Passage
Despite the universal outcry of foreign film nerds and horror movie geeks, Matt Reeves bravely remade the Swedish vampire flick Let the Right One In in 2010. And much to the consternation of aforementioned nerds and geeks looking to rage against the American film system, Reeves' version, Let Me In, turned out just great. Now, the director is going back to that blood-filled well with the new movie The Passage.

Based on the novel by Justin Cronin, Mike Fleming over at Deadline states that "the tone is closer to 28 Days Later and The Stand than Let The Right One In or The Twilight Saga," with a plot that revolves around a biological form of vampirism that quickly spins out of control.

Our sources say that the vampire plague has its origins in waterfowl.

In the novel, those zany scientists decide to use a virus carried by strange bats to create a new wonder-drug.

Franklin, Tennessee — In his "Exit Statement" from Paramore, Josh Farro made one thing abundantly clear: There was a lot more going on behind the scenes than most fans were aware of.

Of course, in their interview with MTV News — which you can see more of in Paramore: The Last Word," a live stream on MTV.com on Friday at 4 p.m. Et — the remaining members of the band addressed most of his charges (not surprisingly, they don't agree with most of them), but in kicking up all that dust, Farro may have unwittingly also revealed the biggest secret of all: that the majority of the songs on Paramore's 2009 Brand New Eyes album were about him.

Up until he released his statement, most fans assumed...

David Duchovny, Timothy Hutton, and Angelina Jolie in Le damné (1997)
Paramore have revealed that they have "hit the finish line" with their latest album. The group, who released their third studio set Brand New Eyes 14 months ago, released the LP's fifth cut 'Playing God' earlier this month, and insist their next single will front a brand new album. "Oh, we squeezed out the last drop last month," singer Hayley Williams told MTV. "We put out 'Playing God' and did a video for it with our friend [director] Brandon [Chesbro], and I feel great. I feel like ... we hit the finish line and we're golden. I love it. I'm proud." Discussing the track's promo (more)...

As if the scrapbook sentiments of their just-released "Playing God" video weren't evidence enough, Hayley Williams will be the first to tell you that Paramore are officially finished with Brand New Eyes, the album that took them to the brink and back.

"Oh, we squeezed out the last drop last month," she laughed. "We put out 'Playing God' and did a video for it with our friend [director] Brandon [Chesbro], and I feel great. I feel like ... we hit the finish line and we're golden. I love it. I'm proud."

So there will be no more singles from Bne, which was released more than 14 months ago and went gold. In fact, Williams said she knew as much when...

Hayley J. Williams
Watch: Paramore's new video for 'Playing God'
Hayley J. Williams
Paramore’s videos are always worth a gander if for nothing else to see what color Hayley Williams’ hair will be. This time, after red, orange and other assorted flavors, she’s rocking pink in the group’s new video for “Playing God.” The clip, in which Williams takes on hypocritical, judgmental haters (played by her bandmates) who “cram ideas down her throat” by locking them up in her storm cellar, is the second hostage theme we’ve seen in recent weeks after Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue.” Williams plays a genial hostess, straight out of the ‘50s, as she serves her guests poisoned tea, while...

Paramore's 'Playing God' Video: Hayley Williams Kidnaps Her Bandmates
Paramore have just premiered a music video in support of their latest single "Playing God". Hayley Williams abducts Josh Farro, Taylor York, Jeremy Davis and Zac Farro and ties them up in her basement.

Filmed at Williams' home in Franklin, Tennessee, the music video also explains how a small woman like her is able to take down four strong men like her bandmates. It turns out that she drugs the guys while they come by for a tea party.

"Playing God" is lifted from Paramore's 2009 album "Brand New Eyes" which is currently being promoted on a tour. Although they have been back home in the new music video, this band actually still stay in Europe for some live concerts. Once the European gig is completed, they will return Stateside for several other shows. Fan can visit their official website to obtain more info about the remaining dates.

Paramore's 'Playing God' Video: The Key Scene
A little over a year ago, Paramore released their third album Brand New Eyes, a darker, more mature, more tumultuous collection of tunes than anything the band had ever done. As is often the case with music that is a bit more intense, the collection of videos associated with the singles from Brand New Eyes have been roundly excellent. They began things with the minimalist intensity of "Ignorance," graduated to the cinematic grandeur of "Brick by Boring Brick" and "The Only Exception" and got more intimate with "Careful." Their latest clip, "Playing God," actually seems to bring together all of those previous elements into a single excellent video.

The clip for "Playing God" (which premiered earlier today on Paramore's official Web site) opens with singer Hayley Williams sitting in her actual car in front of her actual house in Franklin, Tennessee. (We know these are legit because MTV News went there last year.

Paramore's 'Playing God' Video: Coming Home, Coming Full Circle
New clip was shot at Hayley Williams' house in Franklin, Tennessee.

By James Montgomery

Paramore's Hayley Williams in "Playing God"

Paramore's Brand New Eyes was released nearly 14 months ago, spawned something like five singles, sent the band around the world and went gold in the U.S. All that is the prologue to their new "Playing God" video, which — though it never expressly states as much — feels very much like the band coming full circle, tying up loose ends and probably putting Eyes to bed for good.

Of course, I'm just speculating about all that. It's entirely possible Paramore may still wring a single or two out of Eyes, but I sort of doubt it. Especially since everything involving the "Playing God" clip — which premiered Tuesday (November 16) on the band's website — seems to suggest otherwise.

It was shot entirely at frontwoman Hayley Williams' house in Franklin,...

Hayley Williams Twitter Update: New Video, Down Time And 'Hayleyween'
It has been quite a long time since we checked in with Paramore singer Hayley Williams, one of the most beloved stars of the MTV News Twitterverse. Her recent activity has been pretty heavy, as she has had a bit of down time. Paramore have been gearing up for a European tour (which kicks off this Saturday, November 6 in Dublin, Ireland and will include a stop at the 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards, which are this Sunday, November 7 in Madrid, Spain) and taking care of a video for "Playing God," the new single from their still-rolling 2009 album Brand New Eyes. All the while, she has managed to keep her followers entertained and informed with tweets about parties, food and boyfriend Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory.

Like 999,999 other people this week, Williams picked up a copy of Taylor Swift's Speak Now (though unlike most of those people, Williams probably has...

Paramore's 'The Only Exception' Gets Its Vma Moment
While they didn't walk away with any Moonman trophies, the cats from Paramore should consider their trip to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards a rousing success. In one of the best performance sequences of the entire night (during a night full of unforgettable performances), singer Hayley Williams made the transition from hip-hop hook singer (on B.o.B's smash hit "Airplanes") to rock and roll frontwoman. And though Paramore fans voted for the group to play "Playing God" in a poll housed here on the MTV Newsroom Blog, they ended up going with what many believe to be the absolute highlight of the group's 2009 album Brand New Eyes — and indeed, of their entire career. Following a passionate run through "Airplanes," the beat dropped out and allowed for Paramore to strum through "The Only Exception," a passionate, slow-burning ballad that shows off the band's dynamic presence and contains one of Williams' more heartfelt,...

Paramore Fans Say 'Playing God' Should Be The Band's Vma Jam
Last week, MTV announced the latest addition to the list of performers at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Paramore joined a list that already contained the likes of Kanye West, Eminem, Drake, Florence and the Machine and B.o.B. The Tennessee quintet won't just be playing on the stage of the Nokia Theater, but they will also be competing for a number of Moonmen (as will singer Hayley Williams, as the guest star on B.o.B's multi-nominated clip for "Airplanes").

When the news that Paramore would be playing the VMAs (they last took the Vma stage in 2008, also the last time the show was in Los Angeles), we wondered aloud exactly which song the group should play. Considering that "Ignorance" is the clip that got all their nominations, one would assume that it would be the most logical choice for the show. However, if the majority of the...

Which Song Should Paramore Play At The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards?
The list of performers who will be taking the stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards continues to grow. Kanye West, Eminem, B.o.B, Drake, Florence and the Machine and Justin Bieber will all be there playing some of their biggest hits from the past year and newest jams that you soon won't be able to get out of your head. Two more gigantic names joined the fray on Thursday (August 26), as both Usher and Paramore signed on to play the show.

It's sort of old hat for Paramore, as the band made their first appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2008 (the last time the show was in Los Angeles). They rocked their way through "Misery Business" in one of the show's highlights. At the 2009 show, they didn't play but were present at the festivities (singer Hayley Williams famously tweeted about being "#TeamTaylor" after Kanye West interrupted...

Splice | Film review
Vincenzo Natali raises complex moral questions in this thriller about genetic engineering

Back in 1954 the Austrian social thinker Robert Jungk wrote a bestselling futurological study, the title of which, Tomorrow is Already Here, predicted the way science fact would be constantly breathing down the neck of science fiction as the 20th century proceeded. Something like this has been experienced during the long gestation of Splice, the third feature film by the Canadian writer-director Vincenzo Natali. Natali made his name in 1997 with Cube, an ingenious low-budget thriller set entirely within a maze of interlocking boxes from which a disparate group of prisoners attempt to escape. This allegory about bureaucracy and the human condition, clearly indebted to Poe, Kafka and Borges, was followed in 2003 by Cypher, a clever paranoid conspiracy thriller also set in the near future that anticipated Christopher Nolan's Inception. It starred Jeremy Northam as an anonymous brainwashed accountant...

Mad Men: Top Ten Scientists in Film
The release of Vincenzo Natali’s Splice brings us the return of the mad scientist creating havoc onto the big screen. Two young bio-scientists (played by Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody) create a new hybrid creature that defies the laws of nature and morality.

For years, these nutcases have shaped a part of the movie universe and birthed some of the best (and worst) memories and monsters us film fans have had. There are so many to name and it would be impossible to include them all but here is a selection of the good, the bad and the horrific.

Dr. Caligari

If ever there was a prize for most deranged human being it has to be Dr. Caligari (Werner Kraus). The insane doctor, magician and hypnotist use’s his powers of the mind to carry out a series of murders. All is not as it seems of course and...

Career Lessons From Angelina Jolie
Posterized [episode 4]

Angelina Jolie turns 35 today. Her supernova career holds many lessons for talented young actors (and we civilians, too). While an unforgettable presence, the key ingredient, is not exactly duplicable even for those with above average skills, other elements are. If a young actor can muster up even half of her watchability, they'll have a robust career. Just a quick perusal of her filmography brings certain lessons to light.

Cyborg 2 (1993) | Hackers (1995) | Foxfire (1996)

Rule #1 Take anything you can get (at first).

Ms. Jolie, unlike many children of Oscar winning movie stars before her, didn't exactly aim high at first. She'd do youth movies, genre movies, straight to video movies, music videos, short films, television, cyborg movies. You can lose a lot of opportunities if you're too picky, too soon. Those posters up top are just a few from her teenage and early 20s period.
