Can Doctor Who Ever Make Up for Treating Past Companions Badly?
Image
In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.

As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.

McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Fred Armisen-Led NASA Comedy Moonbase 8 Picked Up at Showtime; John C. Reilly Also Stars
Image
Showtime is (quite literally) shooting for the moon with its latest project: The premium cabler has picked up Moonbase 8, an astronaut comedy series starring Fred Armisen (Portlandia), John C. Reilly (Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) and Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!).

Moonbase 8 finds the aforementioned trio playing subpar astronauts — Skip (Armisen), Rook (Heidecker) and Cap (Reilly) — who live at NASA’s Moon Base Simulator in Winslow, Ariz., all of them harboring hopes of being chosen to travel to the moon. “While working vigorously to complete their training,” the official logline reads, “a series...

Ratings: Agt Slips But Tops Tuesday, Tell Me a Story Eyes CW Audience Low
Image
In the latest TV ratings, NBC’s America’s Got Talent drew 5.5 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating — marking season lows, at the very least, yet still easily topping Tuesday in both measures. (Read our recap.)

Over on The CW, the acquired UK comedy Dead Pixels debuted to 506,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating — or about half of what Stargirl had been doing in the Tuesday leadoff spot. Leading out of a Whose Line rerun, Tell Me a Story delivered its smallest CW audience yet (309K) while clutching onto its 0.1 demo rating.

Horror at the Oscars Part 2: This Time It's Personal
Horror fanatics are still buzzing like chainsaws over the Academy Awards’ genre montage. Anywhere there could be a conversation about it online, there was one. Many were upset over the Twilight ‘tweens’ participation, as if their mere presence sent a message about the state of scary in Hollyweird, USA.

A few seemed happy, though, to just get a glimpse of their beloved Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 if only for a few seconds. But many called the selections generic and thoughtless, demanding the likes of Demons and TerrorVision instead (well, maybe not TerrorVision; that was just me).

How about Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer? Re-Animator? It’s Alive? Tombs of the Blind Dead? Coffin Joe? No list is perfect, but with a bit more care and a phone call to any one of us, the Oscars could have elevated that section into a real scream. Or maybe they...

Horror at the Oscars Part 1: The Quickening
It’s that time of year again, kids. Dread Central’s 2010 Horror at the Oscars coverage. Horror was indeed present this year and in black-tie. While Roger Corman and Lauren Bacall were honored a few months back at the Governor’s Award Ceremony, it was an unexpected delight to see Corman, recipient of the lifetime achievement Oscar, enjoy a standing ovation on national television.

I was, however, very disappointed that neither of them were allowed to speak. Roger Corman’s contributions to modern cinema are too vast for him to just stand up and wave. James Cameron was one of many Corman acolytes present, and his nomination speaks to Corman’s tremendous legacy. On the Terminator DVD Cameron mentions, "I trained at the Roger Corman Film School.” Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese, and Francis Ford Coppola, among many others, were also former students.

The terror continued with a spoof of Paranormal Activity...
