Charlotte Rae is fighting another battle. The Facts of Life star reveals to People that she has been diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 91. "Last Monday, I found out I have bone cancer," Rae tells the magazine. "About seven years ago, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer—which is a miracle that they found it because usually it's too late. My mother, sister and my uncle died of pancreatic cancer. After six months of chemotherapy, I was cancer-free. I lost my hair, but I had beautiful wigs. Nobody even knew." It’s illusion inception.
This cat is so transfixed by this simple optical illusion, we are getting a little hypnotized ourselves.
Since technology hasn’t allowed us to step into the mind of a cat (yet), we can only assume what this kitty is thinking. Perhaps it’s something akin to the euphoria you feel when you finally manage to cross your eyes just right, so that the hidden image of a Magic Eye book is revealed. But instead of meowing out loud “I’ve got it!,” this frisky feline responds by aggressively biting the page.

Nascar star Dale Earnhardt Jr. just revealed to the world he happily eats mayonnaise and banana sandwiches ... and the world responded with appropriate disgust and shock. Dale took to his Twitter account moments ago and posted a picture of the half-made mayo and 'nana monstrosity, with the caption "Making my favorite sandwich. I swear it's delicious. @Hellmanns." Obviously no one believed him ... and the reaction in the Twittosphere was swift with Dale getting clowned mercilessly in his comments section.

While the film propelled Leonardo DiCaprio to his long awaited Best Actor Oscar, alongside awards for Best Director and Best Cinematography, Alejandro González Iñárritu's "The Revenant" didn't sweep the ceremony like many expected ("Spotlight" wound up taking the top prize). There was also a minor backlash formed against the movie as well, which is business as usual during the awards season for top contenders, and now Honest Trailers has a go against the picture. Read More: 2016 Oscars: The Best And Worst Of The 88th Academy Awards Taking the position that it's "epic Oscar bait" (though I don't think anyone would call a movie in which the lead wanders near death without much dialogue for nearly two hours an easy watch for voters), the clip details the lengths DiCaprio went for his performance, while claiming the making of the movie is more interesting than the movie itself. Different strokes for different folks.

Dorkly is back with a new video that breaks down what it's like to watch Marvel Studios movies from two perspectives: one of a die-hard fan, and one from somebody who barely knows anything about the movie beforehand.
Though they playfully imply that it's better not to know as much going in, I'm actually fully supportive of that method. Generally speaking, I like to know the premise, who's directing, writing, and starring in a movie, and maybe see the first trailer, and that's about it. I think it's more enjoyable to experience the rest of the film in context in a theater, but I know there are people who think half the fun is scouring every single set photo and scrap of information they can find. Different strokes, I guess.

We’re a little over a month out from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hitting theaters. Based on Internet chatter, the film is already divisive amongst fans. If you enjoyed Man of Steel, then the sequel looks right up your alley. If you weren't a fan of the darker tone of Zack Snyder’s Superman, you might feel trepidation. Personally, I’m one of the latter. Man of Steel was not for me — though it was for many, including my friend Drew McWeeny. I like my Batman movies like I like my coffee: dark and with dead parents. But I prefer a less morose Superman. Different strokes, etc. etc. One of my big fears about Warner Bros. slate of of DC films was Batman’s grimdark aesthetic would saturate the entire universe. Even the first footage from Wonder Woman — which I loved — was stylized through a blue filter. But looks can be deceiving.

Fifty Shades of Grey This Blu-ray arrived only a few hours ago and as I type this my wife took it and is currently giving it a rewatch, all despite the fact she didn't even like it. I don't know what to tell you, but such is the way of the world. Personally, I did not enjoy this movie one bit, but I will always recognize Dakota Johnson as she saved all kinds of face and gave a solid performance in a junk movie. However, I should note this one doesn't actually arrive until Friday, so you're going to have to hold out just a little longer. That is unless you want to just buy the streaming version and own it now.
Selma Sean already reviewed the Selma Blu-ray for you (read that here) and gave it high marks, both for the film and for a solid set of bonus features.

The true testament to a slow-burn thriller’s worth is never comprehended until its climax comes to a head and the credits roll. You’ll ask yourself, “Was the payoff worth the journey?” Were the previous events fulfilling enough to warrant such a sluggish pace, or are you still full of tedium and frustration brought on by an overbearing first few acts that can’t be saved by whatever third act twist a filmmaker reaches for? That’s what Karyn Kusama asks in her latest film, The Invitation, which unfortunately falls under the category of slow-burners that haphazardly meander along before finally hitting stride in the final thirty seconds or so of storytelling – an explosive moneyshot after an hour and a half’s worth of drawn-out, creepy dinner party suspense.
Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay script a story of suspense between friends, which starts with nothing but a simple invite.

Remember, these are movies I consider disappointments for one reason or another, reasoning I set out to explain with each entry. Most often this has to do with expectations, whether it be because of the director, screenwriters, star, subject matter, what have you... This is never a fair position for a movie to be placed in, but it's the fact of the matter and I think this is a list far more interesting than the "Worst Movies of 2014" and, in some ways, perhaps even my "Top Ten Movies of 2014". With that out of the way, let's scroll through the ten films I consider to be the most disappointing of the year, six of which were on...

Marvel is tangentially moving their Cinematic Universe deep into the cosmos with Guardians of the Galaxy, and director James Gunn has definitely created something that seems wholly separate from The Avengers franchise of movies, but different doesn't mean better. In fact, boredom set in early and only a few chuckles here and there sustained me for the duration. I never felt a tinge of excitement. The story is nothing more than a "to do" list as we bounce across the galaxy, meeting this person and that being, moving from Xandar to Knowhere, for the first hour or so before we finally realize that's all this is, a means of establishing a few characters, acquiring a MacGuffin and preparing for the next inevitable step in the story. Worst of all, this is a movie about waiting around to see what happens next, because it isn't long before you know what's going to happen,...

Joan Acocella has written an interesting piece at The New Yorker headlined "Love's True Kiss: "Maleficent" 's Complex Sexual Politics" taking a look, obviously, at the more socially-driven aspects of Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, a film I just declared one of the worst of 2014 so far and referred to in my review as a "tiresome slog". Acocella, doesn't necessarily get into the actually filmmaking behind Maleficent, but focuses more on the message, almost approaching it the same way I did Transcendence, which was me finding fascination in the ideas the film presented while at the same time recognizing the film's flaws. While recognizing the "sexual politics" (as Acocella refers to them) in Maleficent, I still couldn't get beyond how poorly made it was, though at the same time I didn't give them the same kind of credit I gave the ideas I so admired in Transcendence. Janet Jackson has been a star all her life, born into an iconic showbiz family. We first saw her spark on Good Times, and she followed that up with Different Strokes and Fame, but music was her destiny, and after a couple of ignored teen albums, she finally broke through in a enormous way with 1986′s Control, which completely redefined her career, and started her on the road to superstardom.
Today is her 48th birthday, so let’s pick her greatest single. It’s a tough job, with 25 top ten hits (including 10 #1′s), but what is the cream of the crop? Here are my top five:
5. Runaway

Transcendence opened and you'd hardly know it given the estimated $11.2 million opening weekend total. Critics slammed it, resulting in a 20% at RottenTomatoes and opening night audiences awarded it a "C+" CinemaScore. At least, however, those people went to see it. For all the bitching and moaning I see online over the number of reboots, sequels and remakes in cinemas it's a little disappointing to see an original sci-fi idea so easily dismissed (and I'm sure some of you just stopped reading to rushing to the comments to tell me how unoriginal it is, though I'll argue with you until I'm blue in the face). I thought these were the films the audience wanted, but based on the box office receipts it seems the general population is more than satisfied with more Marvel movies, animated sequels, young adult adaptations and religious pics. In fact, look at the success of films such as Noah,...

Miles Teller spoke with IGN on Saturday, and opened up about being cast as Reed Richards in Fantastic Four- Josh Trank’s cinematic reboot of the Marvel series. In contrast to Michael B. Jordan, who spoke last week about loving Ff and how Johnny Storm was his favorite character growing up, Teller claims he was never into the books or the characters. On the contrary, what drew him to the project wasn’t the Fantastic Four, it wasn’t Marvel, and it wasn’t the prospect of playing Mr. Fantastic. It was Trank, himself.

So what are your plans for 2017? Oh, you don’t have any yet? Then you’re not quite as on-the-ball as Universal, who just announced a pair of film releases for over three years from now. Those films are Despicable Me 3 and a new computer-animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

…Wow!
Twenty four hours later, I’m still digesting the hotness that was Man Of Steel.
Now, I’m not a critic, I’m a scoop guy so don’t expect a full blown critical analysis of the movie. There are lots of guys who critique movies way better than I do, but I figured I give you guys my thoughts since so many of you are asking me for them.
Today I saw a lot of straight up ridiculousness from other critics who were either expecting a sequel to Bryan Singer’s abomination or are still way too married to Donner’s classic first film. Some people just don’t get it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Donner’s first Superman film, but come on dudes it ain’t scripture.
The other argument that this movie doesn’t have any wit? That is just straight up corny.

There’s no shame in a movie not working for you. This is something I’ve come to terms with over the course of my movie-watching career. Very few movies, or anything that ultimately often comes down to taste preferences, are universally appreciated. This isn’t a flaw to the system; it’s how the system works. It’s how taste works. Different strokes for different folks and all that. It takes all kinds, etc. etc. I have no beef with people who simply don’t dig a movie or show or whatevs that I care deeply about. There’s plenty of stuff that others think is great that I’m not into for one reason or another.
Here’s where issues arise though: it’s in the reasons people give for not liking something. It’s usually more appropriate to place the responsibility for not liking a movie, especially...

Gareth: Loved all the scenes with Gold at the airport. Seeing him without his power and his reactions to the alien environment of the airport was brilliantly done. Kudos again to Robert Carlyle. He's such a powerhouse actor.
Nick: I really enjoyed Charming and Leroy's exchange as they were running from a full-sized Tiny again. It's nice to know that show acknowledges there's some confusion, and unanswered questions about the characters.

Whenever I think of the Golden Age of Arcade gaming, my mind journeys back to the “Shoot-Out at the O.K. Arcade” episode of Different Strokes. Willis (Todd Bridges) was the arrogant champion of the arcade, but Arnold (Gary Coleman) – his younger brother – wanted to take the crown. It was the era where the leaderboard was born. You wanted to have your name (or rather your initials) immortalized on a giant arcade system for all to see.

Before I recommend The Neighbors (ABC, Wednesdays, 9:30) — a comedy that shoplifts elements from 3rd Rock From the Sun, Coneheads, and other aliens-in-the-suburbs tales and tries to put fresh spins on them — two caveats are in order. Caveat one: The pilot for ABC’s extraterrestrial silly-fest feels half-baked, and parts of it just sort of lie there, but this shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Pilots are always a tad awkward, even good ones, and The Neighbors pilot has the added burden of introducing the year’s weirdest new network sitcom. It’s less a story than a comedy playpen, a place for slapstick, bad puns, and actors’ riffs. Caveat two: Humor is subjective, and silly/stupid is comedy’s cul-de-sac, a place where clowns go to die. You might love Dumb and Dumber but find Mack Sennett boring, or adore the Stooges but be unmoved by Skin Deep. Different strokes,...

Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere is one of the more vocal supporters of Joe Wright's Anna Karenina and he's upset with "New York Times" critic Manohla Dargis' characterization of the film as "a travesty with a miscast Keira Knightley" that is "tragic only in its conception and execution." Okay, "upset" might not be the right word, "wounded" is more like it. I, for one, agree more with Dargis on Anna than I do Wells and I won't deny Wright's decision to set a large portion of the film in a theatre "was an act of major artistic courage" as Wells puts it. Wells' largest beef, however, is against Dargis' use of the word "travesty" when talking about a film in which the director took such a major risk. Wells adds, "It's needlessly cruel and brash and lacking the compassion and respect that any fair-minded critic should bring to any act of creative daring.

At an event today in New York City, Dish Network CEO Joseph Clayton announced that Dish will host a televised “War of the Words” between Glenn Beck, whose channel TheBlaze launched Sept. 12 exclusively on Dish, and Current TV’s Eliot Spitzer in Denver on Oct. 2 — the night before the first presidential debate is held there. Beck and Spitzer were on-hand, standing in a mock boxing ring, in their respective blue and red corners, but there were no oratorical fireworks. That is, until Clayton (pictured, right) took the opportunity to address some of Dish’s own disputes.

Sophistication means different things to different people. For rapper Rick Ross, according to the video for “So Sophisticated,” it means hanging out with Meek Mill near his two Maybachs, giving a shout-out to the prison population, spending time in an abattoir with a sharp knife, rapping in a semi-undressed state, name dropping the late, great Walter Payton, shilling Ciroc, and talking about women’s lady parts with words we can’t print. Different strokes... [More after the jump...] As Ross ramps up for the release of July 3’s “God Forgives I Don’t,” he’s been busy: The video for “Touch ‘N You” featuring Usher...

Los Angeles, California (X17online) - Kanye West and Jay-z have settled a federal lawsuit over the sampling of a song on their joint album, Watch The Throne. Blues and soul musician Syl Johnson sued the rappers, along with their record labels Umg and Def Jam, for illegally sampling his song "Different Strokes" on their track "The Joy" without his permission or proper credit. Johnson's allegation was made last October, and by December the rap superstars spoke out in their defense and maintained they had not violated any copyright laws. They also called into question whether Johnson's original track was protected under the federal law, which didn't take effect until 1972. This isn't the first time Johnson has sued for alleged copyright infringement. He made similar claims against rap group Cypress Hill, asking for $28 million in damages, but the suit was thrown out because the music sampled was pre-1972 and therefore not protected.

"The Joy," which was produced by Pete Rock with West, Mike Dean and Jeff Bhasker listed as co-producers, first surfaced in 2010 as a free digital download as part of Yeezy's G.O.O.D. Fridays viral campaign.
The suit claimed that 'Ye attempted to clear the "Different Strokes" sample for his Grammy Award-winning My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but couldn't get the necessary agreement in place before releasing his LP.

Jay-z and Kanye West have settled a lawsuit brought last October by '60s and '70s R&B star Syl Johnson, who alleged the duo used a sample of his 1967 song "Different Strokes" without permission. The rappers and their co-defendants (including Island Def Jam and Universal Music Group) settled out of court with Johnson, leading the case to be dismissed before going to trial. The "Strokes" sample was used on "The Joy", a bonus track featured on the deluxe edition of the rappers' 2011 album "Watch the Throne". In his lawsuit, Johnson reported that West had previously been denied permission to lift the sample...
