Low-budget goofball vignette comedy has its moments

Lowbrow, Gen-X comedy is passable time killer. The owner and employees of a Los Angeles gourmet food delivery service pursue love, career ambitions and the ultimate joint during the course of a business day. Too many stereotypes, especially one of a young, gay man that is both offensive and really annoying, but sporadically funny and loaded with comical references and homages to classic films.

Return to Sender

Feels like a tv soap opera. The musical cues are an incredibly odd choice. Low brow. Low budget. Overall, just bland and lackluster and lacking in comedy for anything from 1997. This is trying desperately to be Clerks but has no semblance of what commentary it's trying to make or what humor even is. As always, watch for yourself and come to your own conclusions, but dang. This is bad.

little gem of a comedy

With a cast made up of TV character actors you've seen dozens of times, even if you can't recall the names, and derived from the experiences of the director and the producer, this lightly silly comedy, made on a crash budget, manages to keep the audiences smiling, first by not taking itself very serious, then by playing the silliness straight (otherwise the acting would get hammy), and finally by presenting us with undeniably likable characters.

There are weak points to the film; the pacing could have been a little tighter, some comic moments could have been bolder ala Abrahams/Zucker, and the funny noises used for emphasis were over-used.

Still, director Burdette shows a real flair for comedy. That this film was made ten years ago and has received no attention, even allowing that it was released direct-to-video, is somewhat disappointing. After all, think of the many "Porky's" and "Police Academy" movies, none of which show half the flair this little gem shows, and yet they get the promo and the bucks.

Oh well, Hollywood is not famous for its sense of fairplay.
