Guillermo del Toro’s 95% Rated Movie That Made into George R.R. Martin’s Top 10 Movies of All Time
Image
When it comes to epic fantasy and horror pieces, very few can surpass the extensive talent that is Guillermo del Toro, the king of complicated monsters. If anything, the mastermind has rarely had any project over the years that wasn’t tremendously praised by both fans and critics worldwide, never ceasing to leave his audiences baffled with his works.

But, as it turns out, the filmmaker-author hasn’t only lured in critics and general fans and viewers with his charms, but even the widely celebrated writer George R.R. Martin! This is true considering how his 95% rated critically acclaimed flick from 2006 is actually on the Game of Thrones writer’s top 10 movies of all time: Pan’s Labyrinth.

Review: Alex Proyas’s ‘Dark City’ on Arrow Video Limited Edition 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
The urban hell hole in which Alex Proyas’s Dark City takes place is a passé science-fiction dystopia. As crafted by production designer Patrick Tatopoulos, the setting draws heavily from the sci-fi of the early 20th century. This is an analog world of clockwork gears, bulky gadgets, and wires that reveals a heavy debt to Fritz Lang that only deepens when taken in tandem with the noir costuming.

The film’s atmosphere suggests a stasis reinforced by the manner in which a group of pale beings called the Strangers can freeze and reverse time in order to perform experiments on a city’s denizens. Able to implant and rewrite memories at will, the Strangers give their subjects new identities every day, rebooting them in a world of endless night to see how humans respond to the stimuli of their pasts.

One resident of this grotesque zoo, though, proves resistant to these manipulations.

‘Dark City’ 4K Uhd Review (Arrow Video)

Stars: Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt, Richard O’Brien, Ian Richardson, Bruce Spence, Colin Friels, John Bluthal, Mitchell Butel, Melissa George, Frank Gallacher, Ritchie Singer, Nicholas Bell, Satya Gumbert, Frederick Miragliotta | Written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs, David S. Goyer | Directed by Alex Proyas

The name David S. Goyer may not be the most recognisable to mainstream cinema audiences, but he is responsible for the screenplays for some of the best superhero scripts in our time. He wrote the Blade trilogy (1998–2004), Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012), Man of Steel (2013), and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). He also wrote The Crow: City of Angels (1996), Terminator: Dark Fate (2019) and Hellraiser (2022).

However, in 1998 David Goyer wrote, along with Alex Proyas and Lem Dobbs, a tech noir film unlike anything the world had seen up to this point. And 27 years after this film’s theatrical release, Arrow Video has given...

The Hunger Games Just Missed Out On The Perfect President Snow Recast, But I'm Still Happy With Who They Chose
Image
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping just recast President Snow, and while the new star is a great fit, the prequel just missed the perfect opportunity. Serving as an adaptation of the latest installment of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games book series, the new film will be a prequel, taking place 24 years before the tale of Katniss Everdeen. The Sunrise on the Reaping story focuses on Haymitch Abernathy and his winning of the 50th Hunger Games, with actor Joseph Zada set to play the character after Woody Harrelson's memorable turn as the figure in the four original movies.

Sunrise on the Reaping is set to bring back several characters who were featured in the original Hunger Games tetralogy and the recent prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023). Among the returning characters is the villainous President Coriolanus Snow. Actor Donald Sutherland memorably played the character across the four original movies,...

8 Hollywood Movies That Nearly Destroyed Directors’ Careers: From Green Lantern To Gigli
Image
A Look At 8 Films That Nearly Ruined The Careers Of The Makers ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )

Directing a movie sounds glamorous, megaphone in hand, visions of Oscars dancing in your head. But in reality? It’s more like herding caffeinated cats through a minefield. One wrong move, and Hollywood will toss you into the “has-been” pile faster than you can say “creative differences.” Even the most brilliant directors aren’t immune. A single disaster at the box office, and suddenly, your next gig is directing car commercials in Ohio.

Some of the movies on this list came from fresh-faced newcomers; others were from seasoned legends who made one epic misstep. Whether it was a bloated passion project or a tone-deaf misfire, these films didn’t just flop, they nearly sent their directors into career exile. And while a few managed a comeback, others became cautionary tales whispered in studio boardrooms.

'Akira' Live-Action Movie Gets Promising Update From Producer
Image
Unbelievably, it has now been almost a quarter of a century since a live-action adaptation of the 1988 cult smash-hit Akira first entered development hell for a ridiculously long time. While we haven’t heard much about the highly anticipated anime adaptation, that’s all about to change, as Academy Award-nominated producer Andrew Lazar has now teased some promising, and imminent, news.

Ever since being announced back in 2002, the new take on Akira has been passed around to several filmmakers, with the most recent being Oscar winner and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. Now, Lazar, who is best known for the likes of American Sniper and this month’s action movie G20, has revealed (via Johan Albrechtsen of Moovy TV) that, while he can’t say anything yet, he expects there will be some big news coming "in the next couple of months.”

“So, I think you can expect an update...

The Score featured an eclectic group of talent, both in front of and behind the camera. Heath Ledger in Chevalier (2001)
A Knight’s Tale set for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in UK, May release
Heath Ledger in Chevalier (2001)
2001’s A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger, is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time. More on the release here.

Fairly recently on the Film Stories podcast (in this episode here), I dug into the story of 2001’s much-loved A Knight’s Tale. Directed by Brian Helgeland and with a cast led by the much-missed Heath Ledger, it’s a really entertaining blockbuster, that’s very much stood the test of time. Attempts to get a sequel off the ground have failed, but there’s now a stage musical, and – relevant to this story – the film is making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut.

Arriving in Steelbook form first, the movie has been scheduled for release on 19th May 2025. You can find the listing for it, and order yourself a copy, right here.

The previous DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film were generous when it came to extra features,...

Dark City Is Still 1 of the Best (& Most Underrated) Sci-Fi Movies Ever 25 Years Later
Image
In 1982, a visionary sci-fi future noir film called Blade Runner opened in theatres and bombed. Years later, it not only developed a cult following, but critics also cite it as one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films of all time. In 1998, Alex Proyas’ Dark City had a similar release and reception. Audiences balked, but critics recognized the film as a visionary masterpiece. Roger Ebert named it the best film of the year.

Now, almost 30 years later, Dark City has undergone a renaissance similar to that of Blade Runner. In addition to an ardent cult following, audiences have discovered the power of the film. Critics recognize it as one of the greatest sci-fi movies, the legacy of which continues to this day. With undeniable influence, rich atmosphere and provocative philosophy, it too deserves a place in the Great Movies canon.

10 Best Sci-Fi Movies, According to Roger Ebert
Image
Science fiction movies built the foundation of the feature film medium at the turn of the century, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon being one of the first movies that could be considered to be a blockbuster. The best science fiction films have always been the ones that were capable of merging the pure entertainment of seeing fantastical universes and space-faring adventures with themes that reveal something about the human condition.

As one of the most important and influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert championed science fiction filmmaking that pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought to be possible in the medium, bringing new thrills and ideas to the big screen. According to him, the best science fiction movies tell stories that are both larger-than-life and relatable to a wide audience of viewers.

Harrison Ford’s $39 Million Box Office Flop is One of George R.R. Martin’s Top 5 Movies of All Time
Image
George R.R. Martin is one of the best fantasy writers of our time. His amazing storytelling comes not just from his imagination but also from the stories that have inspired him. Over the years, he has talked about many sci-fi and fantasy movies that influenced his writing and helped shape his ideas. One of those movies is Blade Runner, which stars the famous actor Harrison Ford.

Even though Ford was a big name, the movie did not do well in theaters when it was first released.

But over time, more people watched it, and it became a cult classic. With its futuristic world, deep story, and questions about what it means to be human, it is easy to see why Martin loves this film.

Will Smith's 5 Best Sci-Fi Movies Ranked
Image
Will Smith is a bonafide movie star, and you don't get to become a movie star if you're not multi-faceted. Smith's career is one that clearly demonstrates his versatility and then some; he's got a physicality and swagger that lends itself easily to an action film lead, as seen in the "Bad Boys" franchise as well as movies like "Suicide Squad" and "Bright." He has the emotional depth and soulfulness to take on a variety of dramatic roles, as in "King Richard," "The Pursuit of Happyness," "Ali," and "Six Degrees of Separation." He also has a natural comic timing — honed during his years starring on the wildly successful sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" — which crops up in many of his performances, but has also led to winning leading roles in the rom-com "Hitch" and Disney live-action remake "Aladdin."

Despite his considerable range and his continued appeal, Smith has one...

Why The Buffy The Vampire Slayer Sequel's Biggest Obstacle Is Joss Whedon's Comics
Image
If Sarah Michelle Gellar returning for a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" sequel series was on your 2025 bingo card, congratulations, you're a leg up on the rest of us. According to Variety, the project is nearing a pilot order at Hulu with Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman attached as writers and Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao behind the camera. Things aren't quite set in stone, but that never stopped anyone from speculating on details. And when it comes to a direct successor to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," there's one particular detail that will need to be addressed early on.

Dedicated fans of the late-'90s supernatural action/drama/comedy series will know that there were many more "Buffy" stories told after the series concluded at the end of season 7. And no, I'm not talking about that last season of "Angel," which extended past the "Buffy" finale and brought Spike (James Marsters) back.

'The Diplomat' Adds Another 'West Wing' Veteran for Season 3, Which Promises to "Flip the Chessboard"
Image
Production is underway on Season 3 of The Diplomat, Netflix's political thriller starring Keri Russell (The Americans) as Ambassador Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell (Dark City) as her husband, Hal. Allison Janney plays U.S. President Grace Penn, and in a stroke of casting genius, her The West Wing cast mate Bradley Whitford has been cast as Todd the First Husband.

Adding to The West Wing reunion is The Diplomat's creator, showrunner, and executive producer, Debora Cahn, who was also a producer and writer on the famous, multiple award-winning NBC political series. Cahn said of the casting of Whitford (via Netflix), “Brad was the fantasy version of Todd — for all of us. We still can’t believe it came true.”

And things are going to be quite interesting for the characters, as Cahn explained:

Star Wars Made Emperor Palpatine's Return Terrifying, Proving the Movies Did The Comeback Wrong
Image
Emperor Palpatine may have returned to the big screen in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but the Star Wars comics beat the movies to the punch well over thirty years ago. Although no longer in official canon, one comic book sequel to the original trilogy was the first to bring the Emperor back as a clone.

Released in 1991, Star Wars: Dark Empire was one of the first comics produced by Dark Horse Comics after they acquired the license from Lucasfilm. Coming from the creative team of writer Tom Veitch and artist Cam Kennedy, Dark Empire would be followed by two sequels: Dark Empire II and Empire’s End (with artist Jim Baikie), effectively forming a trilogy on its own.

Released around the same period as Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire, Dark Empire joined that best-selling novel as a new piece of Star Wars media at a time...

Jennifer Connelly movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Jennifer Connelly started acting at age 12 will a small part in Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon A Time In America” (1984). She achieved mainstream success in Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth” (1985), and shortly after graduated to more adult roles. However, due to her stunning looks she was often relegated to play either the hero’s girlfriend or the main character’s mistress.

She wouldn’t receive widespread critical recognition until “Requiem For A Dream” (2000) and “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), the latter of which would earn her an Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress. While Connelly is still often called upon to play the romantic interest, she has proven herself to be talented and versatile enough to make those characters more complicated.

In addition to her Oscar, Globe and BAFTA success, Connelly earned SAG bids for “A Beautiful Mind” (Actress and Ensemble), an additional Critics Choice nomination for...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – The Test of Time
Image
When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.

‘I, Robot’ Director Says Elon Musk May Have Ripped Off His Movie: ‘Can I Have My Designs Back Please?’
Image
There’s something oddly familiar about Tesla’s new Cybercab and Optimus humanoid robot designs — especially to Alex Proyas.

The director of “The Crow” and “Dark City” pointed out via X the striking similarities to his 2004 film “I, Robot.” The choice of platform had to sting Elon Musk, who owns both the former Twitter and Tesla.

Proyas tweeted, “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?”

The filmmaker shared three pairs of side-by-side images: On the left, pictures from “I, Robot,” and on the right, Tesla’s recent prototypes. Tesla’s Optimus, a prototype of a Tesla Bot, is a sleek, standing, walking robot that shares some of the same features and build as the ones that stood opposite Will Smith in the 20-year-old film.

There’s also have the Robovan, a bulky, Art Deco-looking vehicle envisioned to carry up to 20 people. It looks an awful lot like an “I,...

‘I, Robot’ Director Accuses Elon Musk of Design Theft Following Tesla’s Latest Unveiling
Alex Proyas
Top film director Alex Proyas expressed doubt over designs presented at Tesla’s recent robotics event. Proyas, known for sci-fi films like “I, Robot” and “Dark City”, took to social media after Thursday’s event. He posted photos comparing Tesla’s new robots to landmark designs from his 2004 movie “I, Robot”.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk showed prototypes including Optimus, an autonomous robot, and the Cybercab self-driving taxi. Both drew comparisons to robots in “I, Robot”. That film pictured humanoid robots serving the public under Isaac Asimov’s famous “three rules of robotics.” It received an Oscar nomination for its effects.

Proyas questioned the new designs. “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?” he wrote online. However, Musk and Tesla have not yet responded to Proyas’ concerns.

10 Best Batman Comics of All Time (That Don't Feature The Joker)
Image
DC Comics' de facto flagship superhero, Batman, has dominated the company's sales for decades, especially when he clashes with his arch-nemesis, the Joker. For many readers, there's some debate about whether the villain is even the best choice for the Caped Crusader's true match, with characters like Bane and Ra's al Ghul challenging him more directly. All the hero's best adversaries have their own gimmicks, and these only serve to enrich the comic book history of Bruce Wayne.

With the Joker stealing the limelight from other villains so often, even in their own stories, it's worth highlighting some tales where the Clown Prince of Crime doesn't appear at all. Ranging from the epic introductions of new villains to character-defining stories of established rogues, some of Batman's greatest adventures simply don't feature his arch-nemesis. For all the classic Dark Knight stories that showcase the killer clown, other villains deserve some attention...

‘I, Robot’ Director Accuses Elon Musk of Taking His Ideas for New Tesla Robot, Van and More: ‘Hey Elon, Can I Have My Designs Back Please?’
Image
On Thursday, co-founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, unveiled a long-awaited glimpse into the future with models for their new self-driving prototypes: the cybercab and the robovan. Also at the celebration was the new Tesla robot optimus, serving up drinks and engaging with the crowds.

Whether or not the Optimus robot was actually fully autonomous or, rather, puppeteered from afar is (very) debatable.

However, one person who seemed pretty certain about the origin of these designs was “I, Robot” director Alex Proyas. The director posted his complaint directly to Muskc’s social media of choice, X, commenting, “Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?”

What The Cast Of Labyrinth Looks Like Today
Image
Jim Henson's 1986 film "Labyrinth" is a deeply beloved classic among kids of a certain age. It presents the raw sexuality of David Bowie, playing a sexy goblin lord in tights, his bulging package kickstarting millions of kids' puberties. At the beginning of the film, the main character, the 16-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) wants nothing more than to live in a fantasy world, happy to remain in her pretty-princess phase indefinitely. However, when Bowie's goblin king kidnaps her baby brother Toby (Toby Froud), she learns that living in such a world is wild and off-putting. Most of the film is a random, light adventure, but one scene points out that Sarah is unduly clinging onto her childhood trinkets.

She learns the lesson of I Corinthians 13:11. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man,...

10 Sci-Fi Box Office Flops That Deserved Better

Box office results don't always reflect a movie's quality, and there are plenty of sci-fi classics which didn't get what they deserved. Whether it takes weeks or years, great movies eventually get recognition, even if they have already been branded as commercial flops. A movie's marketing campaign and timing can also contribute to its commercial viability, so some movies are doomed before audiences even have a chance to judge them.

Along with horror and action, sci-fi is one genre which tends to fare rather well at the box office. Audiences will always be interested in seeing otherworldly concepts playing out on the big screen. However, there are more than a few exceptions to this rule, including some of the most influential sci-fi movies of all time. These maligned classics highlight the problems with putting too much stock into box office numbers.

Charlton Heston movies: 12 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Charlton Heston became a household name with leading roles in action adventures and biblical epics, but his credits extended past those two well-worn genres. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

After serving in the United States Army Air Force during WWII, Heston made his professional movie acting debut with the film noir “Dark City” (1950). His big breakthrough came just two years later with Cecil B. DeMille‘s big top soap opera “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952), in which he played the circus manager. Though an audience favorite in its time, the film often ranks among the all-time worst Oscar winners for Best Picture.

Heston later reunited with DeMille to play the Old Testament prophet Moses in “The Ten Commandments” (1956), which brought him a Golden Globe nomination. A holy hit at the box office, the role undoubtedly inspired William Wyler to cast...

Uglies Review — Another Lackluster Joey King Netflix Release
Image
Do you, by chance, remember when director McG made good movies? Yeah, I know, me neither. And his latest, Uglies, won’t disprove that point. It is hard to believe that the man who cut his teeth directing Sugar Ray music videos has successfully made movies for nearly a quarter of a century.

Yes, cinema is a visual medium, but McG has always focused more on aesthetics. From the Charlie’s Angels franchise to family fare like Rim of the World and Family Switch, he emphasizes vain visuals instead of character depth and a good story.

McG may have finally found a film that tackles those sensibilities with Netflix’s latest Joey King vehicle. Uglies is a grossly digitally enhanced, special effects-driven, inefficacious streaming film whose themes are so wide of the mark that it practically becomes conceited.

Image
The episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Blade: Trinity was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

You know that scene in Ted where he’s in the bathtub trying to get Mark Wahlberg to come over because he has the Cheers DVD box set and everyone is talking sh*t about each other during the interviews? Well that’s Friday the 13th documentary Crystal Lake Memories…..but it’s also today’s video about Blade Trinity….where we breakdown a long and twisted story that involves a director hiring a biker gang to protect him from his lead actor, the possible birth of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and multiple lawsuits. Thank goodness all this ended up producing a universally loved Blade sequel we can all enjoy for years to come.

The 10 Most Dangerous Sith Powers Not In The Movies
Image
The Sith have many different unique abilities in the Star Wars movies, but not all of them have been seen in the franchise's various films. The series also has a healthy variety of television shows, comics, novels, and even video games that have each portrayed the Sith in their own way. In these different additions to Star Wars, some have made inclusions to the Sith's power set as well.

There are only a handful of Skywalker saga movies in the franchise. Putting that up against the countless media projects across the years, there is a lot of information that has both informed the films and added context that is entirely new. These are some Sith powers that have come as a result of this, each more powerful and terrifying than the last.

One of the Scariest War Horror Movies of All Time Is Coming to Paramount+
Image
The horror genre's most popular subgenre is supernatural, but it has often been combined with other subgenres for a more relatable and frightening experience. War horror films aren't as abundant as supernatural horrors, but they create a unique narrative experience blending the terrifying aspects of supernatural elements with the brutality of war and the fear and suspense defining the genre.

The critically acclaimed Overlord is heading to Paramount+ on Sept. 1. The film, one of the scariest horror movies of all time, premiered in 2018 and was released by Paramount Pictures. With Julius Avery at the helm, the film's script comes from Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith, with an early story from the famous producer J. J. Abrams, who conceived the initial story. Overlord stars Jovan Adepo, Wyatt Russell, Mathilde Ollivier, John Magaro, Gianny Taufer, Pilou Asbk, Bokeem Woodbine, and Iain De Caestecker.

The Crow 1994's Director Alex Proyas Is Not Holding Back On Bill Skarsgard's Remake
Image
You can't please everyone, as the saying goes, but it isn't every day that a jilted filmmaker fires shots -- both publicly and directly -- at a major property that's just released in theaters. Most would probably avoid courting such headlines, but Alex Proyas isn't like most filmmakers and the ever-vocal director isn't holding back on the newly-released remake of "The Crow." Proyas has been a veteran in this business for quite some time, directing 1998's "Dark City" (which still holds up as one of the smartest sci-fi movies ever made), "I, Robot," and, yes, the 2016 flop "Gods of Egypt." But he's perhaps most well-known for bringing the original "The Crow" to life in 1994, starring the late, great Brandon Lee in what would turn out to be his final film after a tragic on-set accident involving a firearm. There have been several attempts at remaking the film throughout the last few decades,...

All 7 Alex Proyas Movies, Ranked
Image
Alex Proyas is an Australian filmmaker who specializes in grim, noirish films, usually featuring sci-fi, fantasy, and the supernatural. His most famous films are the '90s gems Dark City and The Crow, which are typical of his style. He favors dark, Gothic themes with philosophical undertones, often about the nature of reality, human consciousness, and the struggle between good and evil. Aesthetically, Proyas's films tend to be visually imaginative, atmospheric, and dark. "To me, the ultimate creative thrill of making a film is not so much capturing the real world but creating a world that only exists in my head," he has said.

Sound And Vision: Alex Proyas
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: several music videos by Alex Proyas. I'm an Alex Proyas-apologist. His film record is widely considered spotty with Dark City and The Crow having a deservedly large cult following, I Robot and Spirits of the Air, Gremlins of the Cloud having some staunch defenders, and Knowing and Gods of Egypt only being defended by a handful of people (including me). Garage Days? Well, that one doesn't measure up to the rest, which I do all love wholeheartedly. There is a reason it was forgotten, but its inclusion in the Proyas-canon does make sense when you realize that he started out doing music videos. So him directing...

Park Chan-wook had some controversial choices on his list of most overrated films
Image
We love seeing which films rank among our favorite directors’ list of best ever — the ones that left a mark and steered them in the path of becoming some of the most renowned artists of the medium. But let’s face it, we don’t mind a little conflict, either. But Park Chan-wook wasn’t going after his fellow directors in a physical way but rather in a much more damming way — attacking their work!

In a recently unearthed slam session from 1999, Park Chan-wook called out 10 films that he considered the most overrated ever. Keep in mind that by this point, the South Korean director only had two features to his credit. So what’s on the list and what did he have to say? Let’s check it out:

Park Chan-wook primarily took issue with American films, opening the list with Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers, which can...

R.U.R | I, Robot director Alex Proyas is in pre-production on a classic sci-fi satire
Alex Proyas
I, Robot director Alex Proyas is currently in pre-production on an adaptation of Karel Capek’s seminal 1920 play, R.U.R.

Alex Proyas, director of such movies as The Crow, Dark City, I, Robot and more besides, is currently in pre-production on a film called R.U.R, it’s been revealed. It’s based on the 1920 play of the same name originally written in 1920, and is famous for introducing the word ‘robot’ into the sci-fi lexicon.

Proyas has written the screenplay himself, and if the brief description published by Deadline is anything to go by, it’ll be at least somewhat close to Capek’s original story. Set in a future where robots are mass-produced on an island factory called Rossum’s Universal Robots, the technology has long since spread worldwide, largely replacing human labour. The robots’ proliferation leads to much debate about their use as slave labour, and a pressure group called...

Forget Gods Of Egypt, Watch This $456 Million Gerard Butler Action Movie Instead
Image
Gerard Butler's peak action film is the iconic 300, marking a legendary role that still resonates today. Despite star performances in Gods of Egypt, the film falls short in comparison to Butler's most memorable roles. 300's plot and visuals far surpass those of Gods of Egypt, making it a more entertaining watch for action movie fans.

Nevermind Gods of Egypt, Gerard Butler's best action movie came out nearly two decades ago. While Gods of Egypt features star performances from Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Chadwick Boseman, the film wasn't able to inspire the level of cultural phenomenon that some of Butler's better-known films have accomplished. Gods of Egypt was directed by Alex Proyas and written by screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Released in theaters on February 26, 2016, Gods of Egypt flopped at the box office, earning just over $150 million against a lofty production budget of $140 million. As...

Jennifer Connelly Looks Back on the 'Really Intense' Requiem for a Dream
Image
Requiem for a Dream was a pivotal project for Jennifer Connelly, and one that she fought for. The film's creative atmosphere, innovative cinematography, and powerful music made it an electric and groundbreaking experience for Connelly. In Apple TV+'s Dark Matter, Connelly portrays different versions of herself in a reality-hopping romance with Joel Edgerton, from writer Blake Crouch.

We spoke with Oscar-winner Jennifer Connelly about her new Apple TV+ series with Joel Edgerton and Alice Braga, Dark Matter, which proposes the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics to create a reality-hopping romantic epic. In this reality, however, we're fast approaching the 25th anniversary of Requiem for a Dream, one of Connelly's most affecting performances. The Darren Aronofsky film is well-known for being one of the most harrowing and upsetting of all time, but Connelly looks back on it with palpable joy. (Watch our interview below.)

Original Classic ‘The Crow’ Returning to Theaters for 30th Anniversary
Image
While we wait for the remake starring Bill Skarsgård to hit theaters this summer, we’ve learned that the original adaptation of The Crow is headed back to theaters later this month.

1994’s The Crow flies back to theaters for 30th anniversary
Image
It can’t rain all the time…Even less frequent are 30th anniversary celebrations. But this month, Cinemark will be honoring one of the best films of 1994 — which is really saying something — by releasing The Crow back into theaters for a special engagement.

Cinemark recently announced that Alex Proyas’ adaptation of James O’Barr’s gothic comic series The Crow is being resurrected for the big screen on May 29th and 30th, just two weeks after its official 30th anniversary. The presentation is part of the “Scream Greats Series” courtesy of Paramount Scares and Fangoria.

The Crow would take in $50.6 at the domestic box office, positioning it as one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies of 1994. On opening weekend it grossed $11.8 million, making it number one, no doubt partly due to interest in the accidental shooting death of star Brandon Lee, whose own father Bruce also died prematurely (at 32). Brandon Lee was...

The Crow Review

The Crow opens on Devil's Night, an evening of mischief and mayhem in Detroit, Michigan. The evening before Halloween, the Motor City is awash in iridescent orange light as cars and buildings are set ablaze. If not for the endless rain, there would be no respite from the fire. Alt-rocker Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancé, Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas), are going to get married tomorrow. That is, until they're both horrifically murdered at the hands of Paradise Lost-quoting criminal named T-Bird (David Patrick Kelly) and his merry band of sadistic killers.

One year later, it's Devil's Night again. The city is burning once more -- if it ever stopped. A crow visits Eric Draven's grave, resurrecting and imbuing him with otherworldly powers that can take others' pain and withstand gunshots.
