Heath Ledger in Chevalier (2001)
A Knight’s Tale set for 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in UK, May release
Heath Ledger in Chevalier (2001)
2001’s A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger, is coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time. More on the release here.

Fairly recently on the Film Stories podcast (in this episode here), I dug into the story of 2001’s much-loved A Knight’s Tale. Directed by Brian Helgeland and with a cast led by the much-missed Heath Ledger, it’s a really entertaining blockbuster, that’s very much stood the test of time. Attempts to get a sequel off the ground have failed, but there’s now a stage musical, and – relevant to this story – the film is making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut.

Arriving in Steelbook form first, the movie has been scheduled for release on 19th May 2025. You can find the listing for it, and order yourself a copy, right here.

The previous DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film were generous when it came to extra features,...

The film is directed by Brian Helgeland and he brings a uniquely fun flavor to the Medieval jousting world. Film Review: Bat Without Wings (1980) by Chor Yuen
Image
Guangzhou (Canton) born Chor Yuen studied Chemistry at the Sun Yat Sen University before getting into the Hong Kong film industry. He worked his way up and soon became a sought-after director. “Cold Blade” (1970) was his first wuxia film, and after joining Shaw Brother Studio in 1971, he directed “Duel for Gold” and then “Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan”. Chor’s adaptation of Gu Long‘s 17 novels from 1976 onwards into a series of swordplay wuxia films won him more recognitions, awards and international reputation.

Selena Quintanilla Deserves to Be Celebrated This Year - Not Exploited
Image
Fifty-three years ago today, the world was blessed with the birth of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who became an eternal icon in Latin pop culture and music. Selena blazed a trail for the música Mexicana explosion that we're seeing today and the Latina pop stars who have followed in her footsteps. Her impact is often minimized in comparison to the circumstances of her tragic death. However, her music - and how she bridged the gap between her Mexican and American identities - continue to resonate with new generations of Latine fans.

Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971, and grew up in Corpus Christi, TX. She was an Aries, a sign often described as "passionate, brave, and headstrong." Indeed of conforming with the música Mexicana artists of the time, she paved the way for herself by proudly embracing her Chicana identity. With influences like Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Jody Watley, and Gloria Estefan,...

Hulu New Releases: March 2023
Image
Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Everything Coming to Hulu in March 2023
Image
It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.

If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

Venice Hidden Gem: ‘Anatomy of Time’ Tells Story of a Mother’s Sacrifice Honored
Image
For his directorial debut, Vanishing Point (2015), Thai filmmaker Jakrawal Nilthamrong created an impressionistic interrogation of a moment of trauma from his own family history — the devastating car accident that left his father bedridden for life and his mother scarred and consigned as her spouse’s nurse. In his second feature, Anatomy of Time, the 38-year-old filmmaker trains his art house reveries on the sacrifices of just such a mother, while also imagining the life she might have had.

“It’s not a biographical film about all of the particulars of her life,” Nilthamrong says. “It’s more just inspired by what ...

Venice: How Maggie Gyllenhaal Made Her Directorial Debut During a Pandemic
Image
It was while working together on 2018’s The Kindergarten Teacher, her first feature effort as producer, that Maggie Gyllenhaal floated to her Pie Films producing partners Osnat Handelsman-Keren and Talia Kleinhendler her desire to direct.

She zeroed in on Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novella The Lost Daughter, a story about a literature professor from the U.K. on a summer holiday who, after befriending a young mother, grapples with the fraught parenting of her own daughters and the guilt-ridden realization that she feels liberated now that they’re adults. The book, which oscillates between a meditation on motherhood and psychological horror, was ...

‘Apples’ (‘Mila’): Film Review | Venice 2020
Image
Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark absurdist comedy Dogtooth in 2009 ushered in the so-called Greek Weird Wave, which blossomed at least partly out of national chaos triggered by the country’s financial crisis that same year. Christos Nikou, whose background includes working as an assistant director on that film, establishes himself as an exciting new voice in the movement with his assured feature debut, Apples. Simultaneously deadpan and dour, somber and surreal, this is a haunting meditation on the manipulation of memory to anesthetize pain, crafted with a meticulous attention to visual and aural composition that makes for arresting viewing.

The central allegorical element ...

First inaugurated two years ago, recipients of the prize to date have been American film editor Bob Murawski and Italian cinematographer Luca Bigazzi.

Welcome to New York movie review: the rampage of uncivilized men
This may be one of the most repulsive movies I’ve ever seen. It’s also an important movie, laying bare the farce that equality and justice become in the face of power, privilege, and money. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

This may be one of the most repulsive movies I’ve ever seen. Its protagonist is a sociopathic narcissist who sees women as playthings, who takes advantage of his power, privilege, and money to — literally — bail himself out when he is unable to tell the difference between ambitious young women who tell him to his face that they’re sleeping with him because they’re turned on by his standing, professional sex workers paid to put on a show of pretending to like him, and uninterested female passersby screaming bloody hell for him to stop assaulting them.

Blu Review: Lifeforce Collector's Edition
Scream Factory brings us 1985's space vampire flick Lifeforce to Blu-ray for the first time ever. Although Tobe Hooper's blend of sci-fi and horror didn't fare well at the box office when first released, it's gained a cult following over the years thanks to video and DVD. Lifeforce Collector's Edition includes both the theatrical cut and a longer director approved version.

An alien spacecraft is discovered in the midst of Halley's Comet by astronauts sent to investigate. Upon entering the ship, they find three humanoids which are in a type of sleep state. They bring the bodies aboard their vessel and discover too quickly that was a mistake. The aliens take over the Earthbound craft by killing everyone on board. Led by their seductively beautiful leader, they arrive on Earth and begin draining the life out of everyone they encounter.

I would say that Lifeforce is probably Tobe Hooper...

Casting Call: Amber Heard to Play Assassin in Machete Kills; Noah Wyle Joins Snake & Mongoose
We’ve got a couple of casting stories to report this afternoon. First up, director Robert Rodriguez continues to fill out the cast for his sequel Machete Kills, and it appears that Amber Herd (The Rum Diary) will be taking on a femme fatale role. Variety reports that Herd will play “a manipulative assassin code-named Miss San Antonio,” which I can only assume refers to her jaw-dropping beauty. Dangerous beauty, apparently. Danny Trejo is returning as the titular murderous Mexican, with Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez reprising their roles from the first film as well. As for newcomers, Mel Gibson and Demian Bichir are poised to join the franchise’s second outing. Hit the jump for casting news regarding the drag-racing biopic Snake & Mongoose. Additionally, ER and Falling Skies star Noah Wyle has joined the cast of the racing biopic Snake & Mongoose. Jesse Williams and Richard Blake star as drag...

Syfy Face Off Season 3, Star Trek Guest Star
The Syfy network competition and reality series, Face Off, has nothing to do with Nic Cage and John Travolta, but everything to do with the amazing artistry behind movie make-up. It recently kicked off a cool second season. Episode One entertained with a Wizard of Oz theme. Brea’s Wicked Witch of the West won the challenge. If you liked that one, wait until you hear about upcoming episodes and their guest judges. One may bring his phaser, set to stun of course.

EW made us all want to beam aboard when they shared the news that LeVar Burton of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, was enlisted to be a guest judge for Episode 7, codename: “Alien Interpreters”. This is what movie make up is all about, folks. If you’re not creating movie monsters, making aliens has to be as wonderful a challenge. That science fiction flavored episode debuts Feb.
