Gangster films have become an identifiable piece of American and international pop culture. The study of the human condition through criminality continues to fascinate audiences worldwide as the need to understand why people turn to lives of crime somehow helps people better understand themselves. With tons of big-name hits in the genre, such as The Godfather, Goodfellas and Scarface, it's easy to see why fans love the genre.
However, there are plenty of incredible films in the genre that, for one reason or another, aren't quite talked about as much as the iconic staples of gangster cinema. Films like Lawless and The Drop are underrated gems that deserve their day in the sun. Needless to say, more prominent names in the genre constantly overshadow multiple brilliant gangster flicks.
Updated on March 17, 2025, by Robert Vaux: The gangster genre is durable, and there is no shortage of brilliant gangster movies that never quite received their due.

In 1987, Paul Verhoeven and Orion Pictures created RoboCop, a cut-throat, R-Rated, action/sci fi classic and one of the coolest movies ever made. A runaway train on fire destined to create a franchise audiences couldn’t get enough of. The problem that shouldn’t have been a problem is that it happened to sell a hell of a lot of toys. Six years later when it came time to create the third film in the franchise, Orion Pictures altered course, opting for a more family friendly approach. They demanded their newest sequel be more palatable to an audience buying the merchandise of their now household characters. Even included an pre-emptive advertisement on the back of a RoboCop 2 Game Boy box that promises the next RoboCop adventure would be “for all age groups”. It was a course that would jump that same train off the tracks, over the proverbial shark,...

After a dismal 1990s that greatly diminished his stature as one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, Sylvester Stallone kicked off the 2000s with a pair of box office disappointments in "Get Carter" and "Driven." Though the latter reunited him with his "Cliffhanger" director Renny Harlin, moviegoers had very little interest in a film about Cart racing. With his two most valuable franchises, "Rocky" and "Rambo," mothballed due to lack of commercial interest, his once reliable international popularity on the wane, and a finished movie ("D-Tox") gathering dust on the shelf due to horrid test screening scores, Stallone had to humble himself and make a movie that didn't lose tens of millions of dollars for its investors. This meant working small and not demanding a bank-breaking payday.
Stallone was lost, as you can tell from one look at the movies he made around this time. The direct-to-video flop "Avenging Angelo,...

James Mangold, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is — and for 30 years has been — one of the most dependable filmmakers in Hollywood, always good for an entertaining and solid, if not showy, film, featuring great performances, regardless of genre.
Indeed, Mangold has directed dramas (Heavy and Girl, Interrupted), biopics (Walk the Line), westerns (3:10 to Yuma), crime/thrillers (Cop Land), action movies (Ford v Ferrari), rom-coms (Kate & Leopold), action/comedies (Knight and Day), mystery/horror films (Identity) and franchise films (The Wolverine, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). But because he does little to call attention to himself as the auteur of a film, he has, for much of his career, been overlooked, in terms of conversations about top filmmakers and awards.

James Mangold, fresh from seeing his Bob Dylan offering A Complete Unknown snag eight Oscar nominations, received a hero’s welcome this weekend upon returning to the Sundance Film Festival where he got his start as an auteur.
Following in the footsteps of inaugural honoree Christopher Nolan, Mangold received a Trailblazer Award during the Celebrating Sundance Institute gala fundraiser presented by Google TV and held at Park City’s Grand Hyatt Deer Valley on Friday night. The filmmaker, who has amassed an impressively diverse resume that spans genres, budgets and blockbusters, made the most of his time in the spotlight by retracing his festival roots and delivering a call to action to all of the storytellers in the room.
He was joined on the fundraiser program by fellow honorees Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute, Cynthia Erivo (Visionary Award), Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie (Vanguard Award for Fiction) and...

James Mangold misses the era when movies weren’t embarrassed to make audiences feel something. The director of the Bob Dylan musical biopic “A Complete Unknown” and comic book adaptation “Logan” believes there’s a growing hostility to films that wear “their hearts on their sleeve.”
“Most of my generation, my peers, have been generally fascinated by irony or detachment. I never felt completely at home in that idiom because I felt those [films] were cool and clever, but not necessarily moving,” the newly minted Oscar nominee said at Sundance’s annual gala on Friday night, where he was feted with the second-ever Trailblazer Award (the first was bestowed to Christoper Nolan in 2024). “Movies that put their feelings on the line, the way we talk about them and use words like melodramatic or chewing the scenery or too much, we kill some of the fearlessness [of directors].”

The star of Sundance’s annual gala in 2025 was not newly-minted Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo, or Oscar winner Olivia Colman, or even Sara Bareilles, who earned a standing ovation for a brief performance to close out the evening. Instead it was Michelle Satter, whose name the general public may not know but was beloved in the room at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Park City.
Satter is the Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs for the Sundance Institute. She has been with the non-profit since quite literally the very beginning. In her speech at the honorees dinner, Satter recalled getting five minutes of Robert Redford’s time and working up the courage to tell him that he needed her to open a Los Angeles office for the Sundance Institute.
His response? “Sure. Call me when you get there.” The rest is history.

The Sundance Film Festival chose well in selecting the honorees for tonight’s Gala fundraiser at the newly opened Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
Beyond freshly minted Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo and James Mangold in the house to receive the Visionary Award and Trailblazer Award respectively, it was Michelle Satter — the Founding Senior Director of Artists Program for the Sundance Institute — whose stirring speech unified the high-profile packed ballroom.
Satter was recognized for her decades-long commitment to nurturing artists and cultivating independent film through the Sundance Labs. As many in the room knew and as Satter mentioned, she and her husband David Latt were among the thousands who lost their homes in the wildfires that scorched LA. Horribly, this tragedy came after Satter and Latt’s youngest son Michael, an advocate in the industry for social justice, was fatally shot in November 2023 at his Miracle Mile home in a senseless murder.

James Mangold, known for exploring various film genres, is back with A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic featuring Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. Mangold relates to Dylan’s constant evolution, explaining that he enjoys surprising both himself and audiences by taking on unexpected projects.
He told MovieWeb, ‘I don’t think I change myself. I don’t think Bob reinvents his core soul, but I like to throw myself into things that people don’t expect or that I don’t expect.’
Surprisingly, though, Mangold is returning to the superhero realm with DC’s Swamp Thing. He sees it as a standalone gothic horror film rather than part of a larger franchise. He mentioned, ‘With Bob [Dylan] you have known quantities, yes, but there are ways to interpret them.’ For Swamp Thing, he aims to bring originality to the table, focusing on creating a unique story despite the established fan expectations.

James Mangold returns to one of the many genres he's thrived in with A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet as the folk bard himself. Mangold, though, has spent a career reinventing himself in an almost Dylan-esque way. "In my own modest way, I do identify with [Bob Dylan's career arc]. My entire career, which has been a while now, I have really enjoyed changing what I'm doing," Mangold told MovieWeb. "I don't think I change myself. I don't think Bob reinvents his core soul, but I like to throw myself into things that people don't expect or that I don't expect." As people say, "The only constant is change."
Mangold burst into the mainstream with the powerful Cop Land, but he's danced through Oscar-winning biopics (Walk the Line), blockbuster sequels (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), psychological dramas, and Western epics (3:10 to Yuma). Perhaps one of his more...

Everyone assumed that the nominees for the Directors Guild of America’s top DGA Award would include, as they did in Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement, Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard, Anora’s Sean Baker, Conclave’s Edward Berger and The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet.
The question was: Who was going to snag the fifth and final slot?
The aforementioned quartet was recently joined on the Golden Globe Awards’ nominations list by The Substance’s Coralie Fargeat and All We Imagine as Light’s Payal Kapadia; and on the Critics Choice Awards’ nominations list by Fargeat, Wicked’s Jon M. Chu, Nickel Boys’ RaMell Ross and Dune: Part Two’s Denis Villeneuve.
But as exciting and glamorous as those awards shows are, they are actually less reliable predictors of Oscar recognition than the picks of the DGA, which more closely mirrors the directors branch of the Academy, which, in turn,...

How James Mangold’s Early Experience with Robert De Niro Began a Career-Long Love Affair with Actors
Ever since he made his feature directorial debut with “Heavy” in 1995, James Mangold has been known for his range, deftly jumping back and forth between crowd-pleasing genre fare like “Identity” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” powerhouse character studies like “Copland” and “Girl Interrupted,” light romantic comedies (“Kate & Leopold”) and, perhaps most famously, musical biopics like “Walk the Line” and his latest film, the Bob Dylan movie “A Complete Unknown.”
What all of these films have in common is a sensitivity to performance that often yields the best work from actors as varied in styles and approaches as Joaquin Phoenix, Meg Ryan, Sylvester Stallone, Christian Bale, and Timothée Chalamet. “A Complete Unknown” is possibly Mangold’s best film yet in this regard, as it boasts superb work by not only Chalamet as Dylan but Ed Norton as Pete Seeger, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as...

James Mangold was grateful for his one-to-one conversations with Bob Dylan before making 'A Complete Unknown'.The 61-year-old director has helmed the new movie that sees Timothee Chalamet take on the role of the music legend and was delighted that circumstance allowed him to spend valuable time with the reclusive artist.Speaking to Forbes, James said: "His people had read the script and were concerned that I was breaking a boundary that either they or their client had set up. They weren't reticent about making the movie."Still, there was an initial edict that was to make it about the studio, what was happening, and not other stuff."However, Covid hit, Bob had to cancel a tour, and I think he asked them to send him the script. He read it, and the next thing I knew was his manager, Jeff Rosen, called me and said, 'Bob has read your script,...

Some actors are simply suited to playing bad men, and while Robert Patrick isn't a heavy every time out, the films for which he's best known for feature him giving good guys a hellaciously hard time. The one-time athletic standout at Bowling Green State University got his start taking bit parts in exploitation films directed by the famed Filipino filmmaker Cirio H. Santiago (his 1976 actioner "The Muthers" is a must-watch), and eventually found his way to Hollywood where he landed his breakout role as the liquid metal T-1000 in James Cameron's 1991 action movie classic "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."
Patrick demonstrated real range in '90s films like "Fire in the Sky," "The Cool Surface," and "Striptease," but for the most part Hollywood knew he could deliver the sneering goods as a villain, and he took these roles without hesitation. James Mangold has proven himself to be a very consistent filmmaker with a true talent for working within many genres. There aren’t many directors working today who can say that they’ve made westerns, romantic comedies, crime thrillers, music biopics, and blockbuster franchise sequels, but Mangold has managed to show diversity within his output. The consistency of quality is critical to Mangold’s longevity within the industry; even the weaker projects in his filmography have noteworthy performances and excellent production design.
Not every single project that Mangold has worked on has been successful. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” was a major disappointment that did not do justice to the Steven Spielberg films that preceded it, and “Knight and Day” was an awkward action comedy that seemed to misuse Tom Cruise. That being said, the vast majority of Mangold’s work has been of very high quality, with...

We all know Arnold Schwarzenegger terminated the 1980s as the premiere action movie star alongside Stallone, but what about the 90s? Beyond Total Recall, T-2: Judgment Day, and True Lies, what’s the best Arnie action flick released between 1990 and 1999? And when we mean best, we don’t mean box office success, we’re talking about old-school ass-kicking Schwarzenegger action hinting at the halcyon days that date back to Commando and Conan the Barbarian. Is it Last Action Hero? End of Days? Or is it Chuck Russell’s underrated 1996 conspiracy espionage thriller Eraser? If you said Junior, Jingle All the Way, or Batman & Robin, you may kindly show yourselves out the door this instant. Better yet, stick around, Eraser is about to wipe your memory and prove why it’s the last great Arnie action flick to blast the masses in the 1990s.

There may not be a better connoisseur of “dad cinema” working today than James Mangold, who has consistently been able to deliver the types of old-fashioned genre films that it doesn’t seem like Hollywood is interested in making. Between rousingly entertaining musician biopics, genuinely inventive blockbuster sequels, exciting action thrillers, and classical character dramas, Mangold is one of the rare artists who can make films with a larger budget and feel like they still have an identity. Although it is great to see that Mangold has only been given more resources, his early work indicated that it was his approach to characters that made him so distinguished. Mangold’s debut film, Heavy, is a sensitive character drama that was able to examine small town life with a great deal of sensitivity.

One of the most underrated ‘90s action dramas, and most underrated performances from Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone is now available to stream on Prime Video. From the director behind Logan and featuring an all-star cast that includes Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Peter Berg, Janeane Garofalo, and Robert Patrick alongside Stallone, 1997’s Cop Land deserves to be seen by a much wider audience.
Written and directed by James Mangold who, alongside Logan, is also known for the likes of 3:10 to Yuma, The Wolverine, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and the upcoming A Complete Unknown, Cop Land sees Stallone shed some muscle to portray a bulky, bumbling, broken local sheriff who finds himself having to step up and become the hero he always wanted to be after coming into conflict with the corrupt New York City police officers living in the community he polices. Sylvester Stallone played the one-man army archetype to a tee in Judge Dredd, Cobra, and the Rambo films. Cop Land flips the script by casting the actor as the underdog protagonist.
Prime Video adds Cop Land to its streaming library this December. James Mangold's 1997 crime thriller featured a powerhouse ensemble starring Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, and Harvey Keitel. The film grossed more than $63 million against a $15 million budget, stoking then-up-and-coming director James Mangold's career. Cop Land is also one of Stallone's most underrated films, overshadowed by the Rambo and Rocky series. Stallone confirmed this in a THR interview; despite the film's success, he considered the reception for Cop Land underwhelming.

Martin Scorsese has directed some of the greatest films of all time and served as the catalyst for countless astounding acting careers. While viewers will be well aware of Scorsese’s incredible collaborations with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, this barely scratches the surface when it comes to the litany of famous names who have performed across the vast spectrum of his filmography. While Scorsese has worked with many established stars, he’s never shied away from taking a chance on an unknown and giving them their big break.
Several of Scorsese’s best films boasted breakout performances from actors who went on to become major names in Hollywood. From child stars like Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver right through to those who came to acting much later, such as Joe Pesci in Raging Bull, it was Scorsese’s unmatched direction that helped them carve out their...

Warning: Major spoilers for Armor below!Sylvester Stallone's action thriller Armor sits at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and again shows his failure to break one of his strangest rules. Another element that makes this Sylvester Stallone action movie unique is that it's one of the rare times he's played a villain, as the thriller makes it clear Sly's "Rook" is willing to kill the guards trapped inside the armored truck he's trying to break into. Despite a fun hook, Armor has a dismal 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which with complaints about everything from the stock characters to the terrible CGI.
Even the film's slim runtime feels "padded" to some reviewers. It also doesn't offer Stallone any interesting material to work with, and the star refrains from making Rook too nasty or mean. Stallone only worked on Armor for one day (according to The Los Angeles Times), which is an impressive...

Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold will be honored with a Visionary Tribute at the upcoming Gotham Awards for their work on A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic from Searchlight Pictures — a distinction recognizing “groundbreaking collaborations that push the boundaries of storytelling in film.”

“Through Chalamet’s breathtakingly authentic performance and Mangold’s masterful direction, we witness Dylan’s transformation from folk prophet to electric rebel, showing how growth often requires letting go of the very relationships and identities that shaped us. Over the course of his career, Sylvester Stallone's worked with a number of talented directors - including Ryan Coogler (Creed), Richard Donner (Assassins), and James Gunn (The Suicide Squad). There's one director that Stallone named as the best he ever worked with, though. Who scored that honor? James Mangold. In a Variety interview, Stallone had nothing but praise for Mangold and Cop Land, the film they worked on together: "I had done Cop Land a little bit before that, which I thought would be a good acting exercise, and I worked with the best director I ever worked with James Mangold." Cop Land does stand out in Stallone's body of work, especially with the role he plays in the film.

Robert De Niro is arguably one of the best actors of all time. He's been portraying various kinds of characters in various kinds of movies for five-plus decades now. Every new role feels like a fun new challenge for him, even if the movies he's in aren't always the best. Fans can always count on De Niro to deliver some element of authenticity to a role, doing it in a way that only Robert De Niro can do it. Of all his most famous roles, he has certainly developed a reputation for playing the gangster or the criminal. Whether working with great directors like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola or starring in lesser-known titles such as Righteous Kill and Analyze This, De Niro always plays a great gangster.
Of all his most well-known films, the 90s had some of his best, including Goodfellas, Casino and Heat, to name a few.

New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

The early 2000s were a bad time for Sylvester Stallone professionally. In the mid-nineties, after a short-lived resurgence of three hit movies, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and The Specialist, Stallone’s career as a bankable action star began to sputter, with Judge Dredd, Assassins and Daylight all losing money. Copland, an indie drama directed by James Mangold, made money and earned Stallone his best reviews since the original Rocky, but his follow-up movies were disastrous. His attempt at a slasher/ horror movie, D-Tox, sat on the shelf for years, finally being released under the lame title Eye See You. His 2000 remake of Get Carter was another disaster, with critics eviscerating him for remaking the Michael Caine classic, with even a cameo from Caine himself not easing their fury. In 2001, he teamed with Cliffhanger’s Renny Harlin on a go-for-broke would-be blockbuster called Driven.

Sylvester Stallone has been a Hollywood staple for five full decades at this point. Dating back to his first turn as the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa in 1972's "Rocky," the actor has been a mainstay of the screen. Like any actor who has managed to stay in the game this long, Stallone has had his ups and downs, but he's still here and still relevant more than 50 years later. But what is the best movie that Stallone has ever been in? What is the defining moment of the actor's varied filmography?
Not that Rotten Tomatoes is the be-all, end-all for such a discussion, but the review aggregator is a measuring stick often used in the modern era. Well, according to Rotten Tomatoes, 2015's "Creed" stands tall above the rest of Stallone's films with a 95% approval rating. That is not all that surprising when we break it down (more on that...

Perhaps no other director working today has done more to keep the Western alive than James Mangold. Although he's hopped from genre to genre throughout his career, the spirit of the Western is present in films as varied as Cop Land, Walk the Line, and Logan. So it's surprising that he's only directed one proper cowboy movie: 2007's 3:10 to Yuma, a remake of a 1957 adventure yarn adapted from a short story by Elmore Leonard. It seems appropriate that Mangold would remake a movie from the '50s, considering his life's mission seems to be infusing Old Hollywood classicism with New Hollywood sensibilities. And with 3:10 to Yuma, which is streaming on Netflix in September, he found the perfect vehicle to express the themes that have been ever-present in his work.

Sylvester Stallone has made a name for himself as one of the greatest action movie stars of all time, but plenty of highly underrated entries in his filmography need more attention. While Stallone will always be known for characters like Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, hes far from the kind of one-dimensional performer hes sometimes made out to be. Throughout his career, Stallone surprised viewers with incredible performances in heartfelt dramas, screwball comedies, and intense neo-noir thrillers.
Many of the best Sylvester Stallone movies have become touchstones in modern popular culture, while other fantastic films have been doomed to obscurity. While some maligned movies, such as comedies like Oscar, have failed to gain the reappraisal they so rightfully deserve, other underrated entries have been recognized by cinephiles yet remain woefully unknown by mainstream audiences. Across his vast and varied catalog, there were plenty of underrated Stallone movies that viewers should give a second chance.

Sylvester Stallone has made a name for himself as one of the biggest action stars of all time, but hes also had plenty of unloved releases across his varied filmography. Despite declaring Daylight as his final action movie in 1996, Stallone eventually returned to the genre during the 2000s. Stallone felt he was getting too old to continue for the genre, but nearly 30 years on, he is still fronting action movies. Stallone's success in action films like Rocky and First Blood led to him being typecast in action, but he has since found a balance.
Sylvester Stallone once stated Daylight would be his final action role, but it didn't take long for him to go back on that vow. After years of struggling as an actor and screenwriter, Stallone broke through in a major way with underdog classic Rocky in 1976. Critics at the time touted him as the natural successor to actors like Marlon Brando, but Sly's career soon went a very different route. After fronting more movies in the Rocky franchise, Stallone's success with First Blood made him an action star.

Cop Land is a solid neo-noir crime thriller featuring a star-studded cast, including Stallone and De Niro. Stallone's breakout role in Rocky paved the way for his action hero status, while De Niro secured his place with iconic dramatic performances in The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull. Despite Cop Land's modest box office success, the film is considered an underrated gem with both lead actors shining in their roles.
Twenty-seven years ago, Cop Land united Sylvester Stallone and Robert De Niro on screen for the first time. Although it doesn't necessarily innovate on its tried-and-true genres, the neo-noir crime thriller is a solid entry, especially because of its stars. In fact, it's probably Stallone's most underrated movie. Joined by other crime-drama mainstays like Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction) and Ray Liotta (Goodfellas), Stallone and De Niro bring a ton of charisma to their respective roles of Sheriff Freddy Heflin and Lieutenant Moe Tilden.
