(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"If you went into a movie called 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective' and you were doing the stuff I was doing in that movie, would you be expecting while you were doing that movie that it was going to be huge?" Jim Carrey asked this to radio shock-jock Howard Stern in 1994 shortly after the actor's movie opened unexpectedly atop the box office. Stern bluntly responded with "No" but it was, in fact, a monster hit. Yet, it all started with a movie that, as Stern pointed out,...

We have some sad news to share today, as Hollywood has lost one of its most legendary icons: Raquel Welch has passed away at the age of 82. Deadline reports that Welch’s passing was confirmed by her reps at Media 4 Management, who simply said that she had died after a brief illness.
Welch was born Jo Raquel Tejada on September 5, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, but her family moved to San Diego, California when little Raquel was just two years old. She knew as a youngster that she wanted to get into the entertainment industry, and studied ballet for several years while entertaining – and winning – beauty contests. She attended San Diego State College on a theater arts scholarship, but despite doing some stage acting and landing a job as a weather presenter on the local news, it took a while for her to break through into films. In fact, Welch had married...

According to IMDb, Woody Woodpecker is coming to theaters in 2017 in his first ever movie. Which is odd, since we've heard little to nothing at all about it. Today, we have a look at the annoying bird courtesy of Imp Awards. This one-sheet is for international audiences, which has us wondering if this is even going to get a proper release on America shores.
The Woody Woodpecker movie is taking on an environmentally conscious theme, and will tackle social issues with a deft hand at the comedy fans have come to know and love. The plot finds the hyperactive red-head entering a turf war with a big city lawyer who wants to tear down his home. This is all in an effort to build a house to flip. From the poster, we'd assume that this is a fully animated CGI movie. But we'd be wrong, as it's listed as being...

Citic Guoan Co. Ltd., Dick Cook Studios, and Film Carnival Production Co. with the support of China Media Culture Promotion Association (Cmcpa), China Film Association and the Beijing Film Academy, have announced that Academy Award-winning director Alfonso Cuarón will be joining the esteemed line-up of speakers at the inaugural 2016 China-us Motion Picture Summit on March 25 in Grand Epoch City, China. Winston Baker is the event producer.
Cuarón is one of the most sought-after directors in Hollywood and around the world today. His masterpiece “Gravity” was received with great success by both critics and audiences, winning seven Academy Awards and breaking box office records in U.S. and China. Cuarón won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, Directors Guild and BAFTA awards for best director for said film.
The film was highly acclaimed in China for its great story, the integration of the country's popular space program and for the film’s visual effects. Compared to European and American audiences, the excitement for 3D and IMAX has not declined. Chinese audiences continue to go to the cinema to watch and experience films with strong VFX.
IMAX Corporation Executive Vice President Andrew Cripps will also be joining the notable lineup to address the great implications of technology on the future of the motion picture industry. IMAX took a historic step in China last year when its subsidiary went public on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Additional speakers joining the summit include Zhang Xun, Chairman of the Board at Max Screen Distribution; Ann An, a renowned film producer and distribution expert in China; and Richard Fox, Executive Vice President of International at Warner Bros. Entertainment.
“We are honored to have such a visionary group of filmmakers, executives and futurists come together at our inaugural Summit. With the help of Dick Cook Studios, our goal was to develop an event that could foster the on-going conversations and collaborations between the Chinese and American entertainment industries. With a speaking faculty comprised of Alfonso Cuarón, Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Gary Lucchesi, Elizabeth Daley, Zhang Xun, Andrew Cripps, Bill Borden, and so many other remarkable names – this unprecedented event will serve as a platform for future collaboration and an inspiration for the next generation of storytellers,” stated Lou Xiaolou, Chairman of Film Carnival Co. Ltd. “We also look forward to more in-depth communication with Hollywood filmmakers in order for Chinese films to truly go global.”
In addition to keynotes and panel discussions, a state-of-the-art Technology Experience will be displayed and demonstrations will be offered of the most advanced technology designed to enhance the motion picture experience for both creators and audiences. This event is nearly sold out. To learn about participation, please visit www.China-us-Summit.com.

Indie film distributor GoDigital announced the promotion of Nick Soares to CEO at the Sundance Film Festival this week.
GoDigital, a Los Angeles-based film distributor specializing in tailored digital and day-and-date releases for quality independent and festival-driven content, also announced the appointment of Kevin Iwashina as Vice Chairman of the Board. Soares was formerly serving as CEO of GoDigital subsidiary Distribber.com, a service that has released thousands of independent films on major digital platforms.
Resurrection of Jake the Snake, directed by Steve Yu, is the most recent release from the company. The title is currently topping the charts on the iTunes documentary section. Brock Lesnar was due to be back in town, so this episode of WWE Raw was bound to be off the scale. It always is when the Beast Incarnate is around.
The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion’s return would inevitably see him announce his inclusion in the Royal Rumble with the sole aim of taking back the championship. There’s no doubting that we’re in for an extensive promo from Paul Heyman followed by a stare down at the very least between Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
Will Vince McMahon be on the show this week? There’s no doubt that the Chairman of the Board’s return to television this new year has made for a better show all round so I’m hoping that he’s back as a permanent fixture for the rest of time.
How would Vinnie Mac and Stephanie make Reigns’ life torrid this week?...

The first WWE Raw of 2016 looked set to be a bumper edition.
First of all, we were set for another few hours of Vince McMahon. Who doesn’t want that, right?
The Chairman of the Board returned last week to call out Roman Reigns, but ended up getting himself arrested after putting his hands on an officer. Then we saw some terrible acting from Stephanie McMahon that I haven’t yet recovered from, before the Vin man secured his bail from jail.
He returned to the arena at the end of the night to announce that Sheamus would be challenging for Reigns’ WWE World Heavyweight Championship on this week’s episode – with McMahon himself stepping in as guest referee.

The head of China’s biggest film company talks about censorship, increasing artistic quality and box office returns that, he says, will beat America’s by 2017
“I am a member of that legendary species: the nouveau riche. Before, you had the Japanese, the Saudis, the Russians. And now it’s me.” The Chinese banker with the line in Boris Johnson buffoonery has the room falling about with laughter, but his game is deadly serious. He’s part of a special delegation at the Montreal world film festival, dangling millions of dollars for “cultural investments” in front of western film-makers. Near him on the dais, a greying, creamy-skinned man in rimless specs musters the odd half-smile, like he’s heard the speech before. Hiding in plain sight, this is probably the most powerful individual in cinema today.
La Peikang’s business card spells it out: “Chairman of the board, China Film Co.

After trying to stay afloat for several weeks, Relativity Media officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier today. The company's film and TV divisions will be sold off at an auction, according to Variety, but the separate units Relativity Sports, Relativity EuropaCorp Distribution and Relativity Education will not be a part of the proceedings. Relativity recently laid of 75 of its 350 employees, but the company still plans to move forward with its remake of The Crow this fall. Production on the movie remake was originally scheduled to begin this spring, but now it seems shooting will begin in a few months.

Theodore Bikel dead at 91: Oscar-nominated actor and folk singer best known for stage musicals 'The Sound of Music,' 'Fiddler on the Roof' Folk singer, social and union activist, and stage, film, and television actor Theodore Bikel, best remembered for starring in the Broadway musical The Sound of Music and, throughout the U.S., in Fiddler on the Roof, died Monday morning (July 20, '15) of "natural causes" at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. The Austrian-born Bikel – as Theodore Meir Bikel on May 2, 1924, in Vienna, to Yiddish-speaking Eastern European parents – was 91. Fled Hitler Thanks to his well-connected Zionist father, six months after the German annexation of Austria in March 1938 ("they were greeted with jubilation by the local populace," he would recall in 2012), the 14-year-old Bikel and his family fled to Palestine, at the time a British protectorate. While there, the teenager began acting on stage,...

There is so much we can all do to achieve equality of gender in media and as Geena Davis Institute says, “If she can see it, she can be it”. Endorsed by Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment and Wallis Annenberg, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation and many other top ranking women, the Institute hosts so many events inviting you, my readers, to get involved.
Given that in family films one out to three characters are female, an easy solution toward reaching parity is, “just add females”.
The 17% Effect –Life Imitating Art?
Given, that crowd and group scenes in live-action and animated films contain only 17% female characters, we are in effect enculturating kids from the very beginning to see women and girls as not taking up half of the space. Could it be that the percentage of women in leadership positions in many areas of society – Congress, law partners, Fortune 500 board members, military officers, tenured professors and many more – stall out at around 17% because that’s the ratio we’ve come to see as the norm?

TV and film has unleashed a new generation of comediennes who act, perform stand-up, write, and direct – yet, despite representing half the population, females are still sidelined in comedy series – with only 31.5% of characters being girls and women. This is still one of the most imbalanced genres in prime time. Comedy has changed on sitcoms, in clubs, and on Saturday Night Live. The repertoire of women isn’t limited to self-loathing or man-hating anymore; the humor is more eclectic, serene, and organic. As comedy has opened up, women who once might not have dared write comedy, or writers who hadn’t considered performing, have been emboldened to become writers and get onstage, Our See Jane salon will convene a panel of comedians, actors and content creators to share their experience in the business and offer insight and best practices into their own creative process.
Coming this Spring: May 5-9, 2015, Academy Award® Winning Actor Geena Davis and Arc Entertainment Launch Bentonville Film Festival with Founding Sponsor Walmart and Presenting Sponsor Coca-Cola
Academy Award® winning actor Geena Davis and Arc Entertainment are launching the Bentonville Film Festival (Bff), a one-of-a-kind inaugural event designed to champion women and diversity in film.
The Festival, which will take place from May 5 – 9 in Bentonville, Arkansas, will be the first and only film competition in the world to offer guaranteed theatrical, television, digital and retail home entertainment distribution for its winners.
Geena Davis, Chair of the Bentonville Film Festival, along with the Bff Board, Julianne Moore, Angela Bassett, Samuel L. Jackson, Natalie Portman, Bruce Dern, Eva Longoria, Viola Davis, Nina Tassler, Paula Patton, Randy Jackson, Gil Robertson and Nisha Ganatra, hope you will join them this May in Arkansas to champion women and diversity in media.

The world lost two famous supporting screen talents this weekend. Firstly, comedian and famed character actor Taylor Negron died at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognise the name, but his deadpan delivery and complete lack of fear about tackling all sorts of topics will long be remembered.
Negron is best known for numerous bit roles in various films and TV shows including "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Last Boy Scout," "Easy Money," "River's Edge," "Punchline," "Angels in the Outfield," "Spy Hard," "Bio-Dome," Chairman of the Board," "The Thin Pink Line," "Stuart Little," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas ," "The In Crowd," "Loser," "The Hughleys," "So Little Time," "Funky Monkey," "The Aristocrats," "Three Days to Vegas," "Vamps" and more.

Fox’s fall lineup, Gotham aside, has delivered a whole slew of disappointments, with heavily promoted reality series Utopia landing softly and new series like Gracepoint, Mulaney and Red Band Society proving dead on arrival. However, maybe midseason hip-hop drama Empire will turn things around for the network.
Featuring a star-studded cast led by Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Gabourey Sidibe and Courtney Love, the show is looking increasingly like a potential hit. Like ABC’s Nashville, which is currently in its third season, Empire aims to blend the soapy, scandalous drama of Dynasty (which show creator Lee Daniels, of The Butler and Precious fame, has cited as an inspiration) with toe-tapping music. And judging by the first trailer, which you can check out below, the series has been wholly successful in that endeavor.

Who knew Adam Levine could do a credible Chairman of the Board?
The Maroon 5 frontman and Sexiest Man Alive dropped by The Tonight Show Tuesday, and host Jimmy Fallon used the opportunity to debut a new game called "The Wheel of Musical Impressions."
It is exactly as entertaining as it sounds.
When spun, the wheel generates an artist and a song – which tasked Fallon and Levine with performing the song in the style of that artist.
This led to moments like Levine-as-Frank-Sinatra singing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes," and Fallon performing Magic!'s hit "Rude" in Bob Dylan's unique wheeze.

Rusev has been on a tear since his debut on WWE television. The 6’0”, 300-plus pound behemoth debuted at the Royal Rumble in January, but quickly disappeared. He went back to Nxt, where he continued his dominating ways. Then, on the April 7th edition of Raw, Rusev returned for good. With Lana by his side, he immediately began destroying his opponents, and it’s remained that way ever since.
Reportedly, there is no end in sight for Rusev’s destructive ways. The PWTorch has reported that WWE management — specifically, Vince McMahon and Triple H — are high on the Bulgarian. McMahon especially is said to be a staunch supporter of Rusev, and feels that Rusev fills a vital role within the company. It’s no secret that Vince has always had a thing for big, muscular brutes, and it seems that McMahon feels Rusev has filled that gap in the roster.

It’s been some time since WWE’s CEO and Chairman of the Board was last seen on television. While the day-to-day operations of the company and its television programming have supposedly been overtaken by Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, Vince undoubtedly still has the final say over everything.
Vincent Kennedy McMahon celebrated a birthday on Sunday, August 24th. Just one week after SummerSlam’s twenty-seventh edition, Mr. McMahon turned 69 years old. The nearly 70 year old McMahon still looks to be in good shape and health, as it’s commonly known Vince has been an avid bodybuilder for decades — the so-called Genetic Jackhammer even graced the cover of Muscle & Fitness magazine in April of 2006.
Surely, the aging yet able Vince is enjoying the fact that he can loosen his tight grip on the reins of his company. While the Chairman is probably nowhere close to stepping away yet,...

What are some films that you would consider to be the worst of all time? Tommy Wiseau’s The Room? John Travolta’s Battlefield Earth? Mariah Carey’s Glitter? Well, according to film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, there are films that are much worse out there. While the movies just mentioned are bad, they still have their fair share of positive reviews on the popular website.
Today we are going to be looking at ten films that have the dishonorable distinction of having a zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. These are films that apparently no reviewer can find any merit in whatsoever. We’d like to argue that these next films don’t necessarily deserve that distinction. Now, these movies are far from masterpieces (heck, they’re not even all that good) but they deserve at least a 1% rating for goodness sake!

Beloved and old-school robots-take-over-an-amusement-park Michael Crichton sci-fi Westworld was successful enough to spawn a sequel, Futureworld, and a TV show, but since its '70s heyday, there's not been too much chatter about bringing the engaging idea back to either the big or small screen - but all this has changed with the news that HBO and Jonah Nolan (co-writing with wife Lisa Joy) are finally making it happen, with killer acting talent in the form of Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood and James Marsden already lined up to star, as revealed by FilmDivider.com. Exec producing are J.J. Abrams - how does he find the time? - and Jerry Weintraub.Entertainment Weekly has further details, adding that Hopkins will play Dr. Robert Ford, a "brilliant, taciturn and complicated Creative Director, Chief Programmer and Chairman of the Board of Westworld," who has been described as having an "uncompromising creative vision...

Another Oscar winner is coming to HBO: Anthony Hopkins has been cast in the cable drama’s TV reboot of the sci-fi classic Westworld.
The casting will mark the first potential regular TV gig for the acclaimed Silence of the Lambs and Thor actor, and continues the trend of Academy Award winners taking small-screen roles. He will be joined in the project by actress Evan Rachel Wood (Once and Again, True Blood).
No, Hopkins is not playing “the Yul Brynner role.” But the descriptions for both his character and Wood’s shed some insight into the secretive project’s storyline.

The Board of Directors of the American Music Theater Festival, operating as the Prince Music Theater, announced today that it plans to close its doors on November 30, 2014 unless new donors step forward or another funding source is secured. Despite a successful 2013 season with sell-out performances, international press, and significant growth under new leadership, the Prince will have difficulty raising money since its chief fundraiser and Chairman of the Board, Herb Lotman, passed away unexpectedly in May.

There once was a time when Paul Anka, sitting somewhere among the streets and cafes of gay Paris, heard a song. A song that would change his life. A song that, according to Anka, was really shitty. “I thought it was a shitty record, but there was something in it,” Anka told The Telegraph in 2007. Harsh, yes, especially if you’re Claude Francois, whose 1967 hit “Comme d’habitude” is the toilet-quality (honestly, it’s not that bad) piece of music in question. But there was something lurking within “Comme d’habitude,” and Anka would eventually scrape that something out of its French pop shell. Years later, Anka would be hanging out with Frank Sinatra, doing those usual Frank Sinatra-adjacent things — dinner, drinks, casual association with members of La Cosa Nostra — when the Chairman of the Board dropped a truth bomb on Anka and the various mobsters present. He was out; he was done; the music biz...
