House of the Dragon season 3 continues to film across the pond, which star Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen, recently confirmed is coming to an end soon. As the various cast members continue to promote other works in between seasons, they've done a good job hyping up the next installment as the wait continues for fans.

While promoting her Amazon Prime Video series The Girlfriend, star Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower in House of the Dragon, commented that filming is going well and that the series is doing more practical stunt work, which is particularly exciting.

“We started in April, so we are done in October. We’re over halfway and it’s massive…...

Every Canceled Game Of Thrones Spin-Off Series We Know About
Image
By certain metrics, "Game of Thrones" was and is the biggest TV show of all time. At no other moment in history -- and by moment, in this case, I mean a span of several years -- has a single series sat so definitively on the (pardon the pun) throne of television. It was a cultural phenomenon unlike any other, and so it was the least surprising thing in the world when HBO announced plans to massively expand the franchise with various spin-offs after the original show ended.

Those plans started on somewhat rocky footing due to the largely negative response to "Game of Thrones" season 8, which will go down as bag-fumbling of gargantuan proportions. But more than half a decade on, that ire has faded, and the first big spin-off, "House of the Dragon," has returned the world of Westeros to critical acclaim. The third live-action series, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,...

Game of Thrones: Everything We Know About All the Spin-Offs Either Cancelled or In Development
Image
What Do We Know About the various Game of Thrones series in development at HBO? More than you may think. With House of the Dragon heading into its third season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms coming in 2025, there is a lot still developing from the world of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy realm. From plot, casting news, and more, let’s dive in and look at what is coming up in the new additions to the Game of Thrones franchise.

Aegon’s Conquest

With The Batman Part II writer Mattson Tomlin attached in early 2024, this series may be the most likely successor to Game of Thrones to debut after House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Some rumors have said HBO is very interested in this series, with a potential movie leading into the series potentially coming to fruition. The series would follow Aegon the...

George R.R. Martin: I Admit I Was “Surprised” When HBO Greenlit a Staggering 4 ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequels
Image
It’s not a secret anymore that we’re getting a handful of prequels thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones and the success of House of the Dragon (even if it’s debatable). This year, HBO is bringing a new epic based on George R.R. Martin’s novella, Tales of Dunk and Egg. While fans were looking forward to more stories based in Westeros, the author was surprisingly caught off guard by the studio’s decision.

It takes a lot of risk and courage to attempt to replicate the global phenomenon of Game of Thrones, but somehow, the latest prequel series managed to take the world by storm. With this, HBO must be very confident enough to greenlight more spinoffs.

George R.R. Martin did not expect this number of Game of Thrones spinoffs

Since Game of Thrones wrapped up in 2019, HBO has been trying to work on...

Everything We Know About Scrapped ‘Game of Thrones’ Pilot
Image
Despite HBO's most popular series, Game of Thrones, airing its final episode back in 2019, the network is nowhere near finished creating new stories that take place in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy world. Currently, fans impatiently await season three of the first of many spin-offs, House of the Dragon. However, few know that a prequel series called Bloodmoon was originally supposed to air in its place — costing HBO a whopping $30 million for its failed pilot.

Bloodmoon would have brought viewers thousands of years into the past to likely explore the events of The Long Night, provide more context for the controversial eighth season of Game of Thrones, and present the origins of House Lannister and Casterly Rock. With showrunner and writer Jane Goldman, most known for fan-favorite Kingsman: The Secret Service, Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson, and Oscar-nominee Naomi Watts at the helm, the show promised incredible success. So,...

It's So Disappointing That HBO Keeps Repeating The Same Game Of Thrones Spinoff Mistake
Image
HBO is building a franchise around the success of Game of Thrones, but the network keeps making the same disappointing mistakes when it comes to its TV spinoffs. Game of Thrones was nothing short of a cultural phenomenon when it was on air, so it's no surprise HBO is developing multiple spinoffs based on George R.R. Martin's books. House of the Dragon is already two seasons in, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is expected to arrive in 2025, and a new Game of Thrones movie is in the works.

Despite HBO's commitment to expanding the Game of Thrones universe, the network continues to repeat the same mistake when it comes to its approach. While series like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms cover interesting events outlined in Martin's books, they also prove HBO is playing it safe. It's a shame the network isn't willing...

House of the Dragon Almost Got Shelved—Here’s How That Near Miss Paved Way for Its Success!

House of the Dragon Almost Got Shelved—Here’s Why That Nearly-Disaster Led to Its Success! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Believe it or not, House of the Dragon almost failed. HBO was ready to cancel the Game of Thrones prequel before it started. Crazy, huh? The show is killing it today because of that near-miss.

HBO has many Game of Thrones spinoffs in the pipeline, but only sometimes. After Game of Thrones finished in 2019, the network took its time—maybe too long—releasing new content. They even spent $30 million on a prequel pilot called Blood Moon about the Long Night to cancel it. Talk about brutal.

But it wasn’t just Bloodmoon that faced the axe. According to co-showrunner Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon was also close to being shelved. Condal revealed, “HBO was going to shelve it” until George R.R. Martin stepped in. This was the story Martin wanted to tell most,...

Game Of Thrones' Shelved Braavos Spinoff Could Have Done 1 Underwhelming Story Justice After 9 Years
Image
George R.R. Martin recently revealed that HBO shelved a Game of Thrones spinoff centered on Braavos, and this series could have done one underwhelming storyline from the original show justice. There are a number of Game of Thrones spinoffs in development at HBO, along with a new Game of Thrones movie in the works from Warner Bros. House of the Dragon is proof that the fantasy franchise can succeed beyond the original story, but not every attempt to expand it has seen the light of day.

Several planned Game of Thrones spinoffs have been scrapped already, including Bloodmoon and the Jon Snow sequel series. Martin's recent comments reveal that HBO also decided against a TV show set in Braavos, which is somewhat disappointing. After all, Braavos is an underutilized location from the original show and it's one that has a lot of unrealized potential. While Arya travels there in Game of Thrones...

New Game Of Thrones Movie Could Be The Shake-Up The Fantasy Franchise Needs
Image
There's a new Game of Thrones movie in development, and it could be exactly what the franchise needs. Following the original HBO show's enormous success, Warner Bros. has been searching for ways to capitalize on the popularity of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice & Fire books and their expanded world. A recent report about a Game of Thrones movie in development raises plenty of speculation about what the contents of the film could be, but overall, it seems like a promising addition to the franchise at the perfect time.

Following the divisive Game of Thrones ending in 2019, it's been a challenging road back to acclaim for the iconic fantasy franchise. The first planned spinoff, Bloodmoon, was canceled after filming a pilot episode starring Naomi Watts. House of the Dragon was the next series to come about, and though the first season received widespread critical acclaim, the second...

A Game Of Thrones Movie May Finally Be Happening
Image
HBO's megahit series "Game of Thrones" was so successful that there's been a nonstop churn of spinoffs in development ever since it ended. Now, though, something different is stirring: a "Game of Thrones" movie. According to the Hollywood Reporter, HBO has been "quietly developing at least one film" set in the historical fantasy world created by author George R.R. Martin. There are currently no writers, directors, or cast members attached to the project(s), nor any specifics about the story, but there's certainly no shortage of source material.

This isn't the first time the possibility of movies has been floated. Martin said in 2014 that ideas like a big screen conclusion for "Game of Thrones" were being "actively discussed," and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to wrap up the series with a movie trilogy.

HBO's parent company is Warner Bros. Discovery, which has become focused on straddling its franchises across film and television.

“The one I want to do is…”: The One Game of Thrones Spinoff Project That Can Bring Henry Cavill to HBO’s Universe is Still Not Shelved
Image
Game of Thrones fans are definitely rejoicing with all the lined-up projects heading their way soon. However, with all the planned spinoff series, only some are confirmed, and the unfortunate ones have been canceled or shelved for the time being.

After House of the Dragon, the most highly anticipated series would be Aegon’s Conquest, the tale of the conqueror who united the realm and became the first king of the Targaryen dynasty. There have been positive updates about the series, so fans will be assured that this is still moving forward.

Game Of Thrones Spinoff Aegon’s Conquest Is Confirmed To Be In The Works

After Game of Thrones wrapped up in 2019, HBO still wanted to explore the world of Westeros through spinoffs. Programming chief Casey Bloys told The Hollywood Reporter at the time that they planned to pick which stories were worth telling.

5 Signs Daenerys Is The Prince That Was Promised (& 5 It's Jon Snow)
Image
Daenerys displays key traits for the Prince That Was Promised prophecy in Game of Thrones. Jon Snow also fits many criteria for the prophecy. Both characters have strong arguments for fulfilling the prophecy.

One of the ongoing debates about Game of Thrones is whether Daenerys Targaryen or Jon Snow was ultimately the Prince That Was Promised. The Game of Thrones ending left a lot to be desired, particularly for those who thought either Dany or Jon would end up on the Iron Throne. Throughout the show's eight seasons, they both grew to be fan-favorite heroes, yet audiences watched them succumb to their awkward romance before their arcs practically collapsed in the final episodes, with Jon absent at the Battle of Winterfell and Dany falling into madness.

Perhaps the biggest lingering question concerns the Prince That Was Promised prophecy: whether it pertained to either character and whether it ever mattered in the first place.

10 Canceled TV Spinoffs That Never Got To Air
Image
Many TV spinoffs never make it past the pilot stage due to poor ratings or other factors. Some unused footage from failed TV pilots may be repurposed in the original show. Spinoffs with the potential to fill gaps in the original story, like in Game of Thrones, can be canceled due to pilot quality.

There are a lot of new movie and TV show spinoffs these days, but some TV spinoffs still never make it to air. While the movie industry is busy with many unwanted upcoming sequels and remakes, TV executives are turning through a roster of ideas for new shows, and have been for years. TV is arguably the better format for trying out new ideas, as networks and streaming services can produce a pilot before financially committing to an entire series.

This is how there are many existing TV shows that never aired. In some (many) cases with a proposed spinoff show,...

Making Sense of the Game of Thrones Universe Spinoffs
Image
Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels, Game of Thrones was a breakthrough for HBO. Debuting in 2011, It straddled multiple eras of its network’s ownership and technology.

The series showed that massive audiences would respond to fantasy series with dense mythologies. It also included a massive number of characters and place names.

And even though the series eventually got beyond Martin’s published books, many fans were dissatisfied with how the series ended. But Game of Thrones remains mostly well-remembered.

(Ollie Upton/HBO)

As with most popular franchises in the present day, the overseers of what is now Warner Bros. Discovery have sought to extend the franchise in additional directions and indefinitely into the future.

Even though George R.R. Martin still has to finish the A Song of Ice and Fire series, he has written several other works set...

1 Fatal Mistake By George Lucas Almost Made John Williams Turn ‘Star Wars’ Into an Episode of ‘Game of Thrones’
Image
Game of Thrones undeniably stands as one of the most influential shows in television history, leaving a lasting impact across various mediums. More than four years after its conclusion, the series remains a significant topic of discussion, though not always for the best reasons. Interestingly enough, one massive mistake by George Lucas might have made Star Wars just like Game of Thrones.

A scene from Game of Thrones

The success of Game of Thrones was rooted in its ability to craft a compelling narrative alongside exceptional world-building, providing fans with something to anticipate for over eight years. Regrettably, the series concluded in a manner widely deemed as one of the worst endings to a show, particularly the final episode of Season 8. This ending significantly impacted the overall excitement and reception the series had garnered, marking a disappointing conclusion for many fans.

Can Animation Expand George R. R. Martin's Lore to Game of Thrones?
Image
Animated series are the future of the Game of Thrones universe on television. With many tales of heroism and war in A Song of Ice and Fire, an anthology series is the best choice to dive into the lore. An animated format also offers the best opportunity to illustrate the magic of A Song of Ice and Fire in Westeros and Essos.

When one thinks of Game of Thrones, they likely think of the Targaryens, Starks and Lannisters. They're the richest and most powerful houses in Westeros, and the three main families that are followed in the original Game of Thrones series. George R. R. Martin's adapted work has stretched beyond the eight-season HBO series to the spinoff House of the Dragon, set in a time when Targaryens were still in power. But these are just a handful of what Martin's lore has to offer.

House Of The Dragon's Success Fully Justifies HBO's Bloodmoon Decision
Image
House of the Dragon's success validates HBO's decision to abandon the previous prequel, Bloodmoon. Bloodmoon took a risk by deviating from the source material and offering something unexpected, but it failed to capture the same tone as the original series. House of the Dragon's positive reception proves that expanding the Game of Thrones universe with new intrigue and characters can be successful, paving the way for future spin-offs.

Determining Bloodmoon's fate may have been risky, but the success of House of the Dragon completely validates HBO's decision. Faced with the lofty expectations of succeeding one of the most successful television shows of all time, House of the Dragon expanded the epic fantasy world of warring kingdoms, indelible characters, visceral violence, and fire-breathing beasts first seen in Game of Thrones. The result was a hit in its own right. The acclaimed prequel proved there was still an appetite for familiar storylines.

Game Of Thrones Author Confirms Multiple Spinoffs In Active Development, Despite Just 1 Greenlight

10 Great Martial Arts Stars Who Play Both Heroes & Villains
Image
Martial arts movie stars often get typecast as either heroes or villains, but some are skilled at playing both roles, like Carter Wong and Max Zhang. Another example is Gary Daniels, known for his flexibility and kicking skills, who plays both heroes and villains in martial arts films. Actors like Iko Uwais, Joe Taslim, and Dolph Lundgren have successfully portrayed both heroes and villains, showcasing their versatility in action films.

Numerous great martial arts stars play heroes and villains alike. Martial arts films are typically headlined by actors or actresses with a life-long background in formal martial arts training. Oftentimes, leads of martial arts films tend to become somewhat typecast for portraying heroes, while others go the opposite route and primarily play villains.

Some martial arts stars, however, pull off quite a juggling act with both heroes and villains. In such cases, martial arts movie stars who tackle the good...

10 Upcoming Game Of Thrones Spinoff Problems That HBO Won't Admit (But Needs To Fix)
Image
There are multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works, but while HBO's plans for expanding the franchise are smart, there are also more than a few issues in how the network is going about it. It was clear even before Game of Thrones' ending that Westeros would live-on in some way on HBO, and after some struggles - including an expensive failed pilot for Bloodmoon, or The Long Night - things are really starting to come to fruition. House of the Dragon season 1 was a big success, but that's only the beginning.

There are multiple Game of Thrones spinoffs in development, ranging from those with confirmed series orders such as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, to several that are in a more exploratory stage, including a Jon Snow sequel. All the upcoming Game of Thrones shows have merit, and it's understandable why HBO would be pursuing them as options.

House Of The Dragon Almost Being Canceled Secretly Explains Why It's So Good

HBO was prepared to cancel House of the Dragon in its development stage, and that actually helps to highlight why the Game of Thrones prequel is so good. Although HBO now has multiple Game of Thrones spinoff shows in development, the network did take its time in bringing any of them to the screen. House of the Dragon itself didn't arrive until three years after Game of Thrones' ending, and the journey to that point had more than a few speed bumps.

The first prequel to be ordered, telling the story of the Long Night and given the working title Bloodmoon, was canceled despite HBO spending a reported $30 million on the pilot episode. It's also been revealed that House of the Dragon was almost canceled, with showrunner Ryan Condal saying "HBO was going to shelve it" before George R.R. Martin himself stepped in. 10 Action-Slasher Movies You Maybe Haven’t Seen

Game of Thrones: Aegon Prequel Series Must Finally Correct The Long Night’s Mistakes
Image
If HBO has its way, pretty soon the average TV-watcher is going to know more about the Targaryen dynasty than their own respective country’s history.

According to an exclusive report from Variety, HBO and parent company Warner Bros. Discovery are actively discussing a second Game of Thrones prequel that would follow King Aegon I Targaryen a.k.a. Aegon the Conqueror as he invades and ultimately unifies the continent of Westeros roughly 300 years ago in the franchise’s timeline. Though no writers are yet attached to the project, HBO is also considering a “feature” component for the series and might attempt to produce a feature film that would lead in to the eventual series.

The backstory of Aegon’s Conquest has been well established in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon but for those who require a Targaryen history refresher, allow us to help. A little...

Even before Game of Thrones ended, HBO was already exploring options to keep the franchise going. Several potential Game of Thrones spinoffs were in development before House of the Dragon finally moved ahead, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from discussing other projects. Variety has reported that HBO is “actively” discussing a new Game of Thrones prequel about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.

Sources told Variety that the Aegon prequel is still in the very stages and that no writer is attached at the moment. Another source has claimed that the project may involve a feature film, meaning that we could get a movie that would lead into the events of the series. Taking place three hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones (and one hundred years before House of the Dragon), the potential prequel would tell the story of how “Aegon and his sister-wives,...

5 Spinoffs That Never Made It To Air
Wilmer Valderrama, Rocky Carroll, Gary Cole, Katrina Law, Sean Murray, Brian Dietzen, and Diona Reasonover in NCIS : Enquêtes spéciales (2003)
There have been many great shows, and for some of the lucky few, an even better spinoff has emerged.

From shows like NCIS, Better Call Saul, and more recently, House of the Dragon, audiences have truly been spoilt.

But just because the original show was a success, it doesn't always mean the spinoff will be a success.

Heck, in some cases, the spinoff series doesn't even make it to air.

Below are five examples of some planned spinoff shows that unfortunately never made it onto the small screen, with reasons provided as to why that never happened.

Revenge

When the original four-season run of Revenge ended in 2015, the nature of the final episode instantly led to rumours that the show could return. Could Nolan continue to help those seeking vengeance? Would Charlotte progress further down the dark path the show has hinted at?

A few months after the show ended,...

Keith Strandberg interview: No Retreat No Surrender
Craig Lines May 3, 2017

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...

If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

Gary Daniels is Ready to Kick Some Faces in Ara Paiaya’s Skin Traffik
Fact: I will watch anything starring Gary Daniels. And I do mean anything. My DVD collection is littered with the guy’s greatest offerings and his worst. For crying out loud — I own “Bloodmoon” and “City of Fear.” Don’t you talk to me about devotion! As you can tell, anytime the guy puts together a new motion picture I tend to get a little excited. It’s like Christmas, except Gary Daniels slides down the chimney and spin kicks me in the grill. Enter director Ara Paiaya’s upcoming action thriller “Skin Traffik,” a flick that brings Daniels together with a number of direct-to-video veterans and former Hollywood A-listers. Included in this hefty cast are Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Michael Madsen, Jeff Fahey, Dominique Swain, and Daryl Hannah. Daryl freaking Hannah! How can you possibly lose? Check out this synopsis: “A jaded hit man regains his humanity in this...

'Mortal Kombat: Rebirth' Web Series Cast To Include Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White
You remember the awesome "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" trailer that popped up last year, right? The live-action short film, that we later learned was a grassroots bid from "Fame" remake director Kevin Tancheroen, was immediately latched onto by fans for doing something the previous "Mk" movies couldn't: look and feel as gritty and effed up as the games. "Rebirth" was recently confirmed for a web series treatment and today Warner Bros. announced the initial casting for the coming Tancheroen-directed shorts.

The WB press release confirms that Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White will be reprising their roles from Tancheroen's initial short, Lieutenant Sonya Blade and Major Jackson 'Jax' Briggs, respectively. "Star Trek" fans certainly remember Ryan as the hottie Borg, Seven of Nine, on the "Voyager" TV series. White you've probably seen plenty of, most recently as the gangster Gambol in "The Dark Knight" or as the titular ass-kicker in Blaxploitation parody "Black Dynamite.
