Continuing the festival's audience tradition, Cannes 2025 has had its fair share of long-standing ovations.
One of the festival's anticipated films features a leading performance from Stellan Skarsgård. The patriarch of the Skarsgård family, the actor is known for his roles in movies like Good Will Hunting and Amistad. There was never a point after the blockbuster triumph of "Jaws" when it could be said Steven Spielberg needed a hit, but in 1992, coming off a string of critical and commercial disappointments in "Empire of the Sun," "Always," and "Hook," his future as a filmmaker did look a bit cloudy. His last two certified box office smashes at this point were "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," and while both were the work of an energized director, he clearly had loftier ambitions. And when the critics failed to realize he'd made a stone-cold masterpiece in "Empire of the Sun," he had cause to wonder if they were going to irrationally hold his unprecedented rush of success against him forever.
We know how this played out. Spielberg eventually reinvented the blockbuster with "Jurassic Park," and finally, in the eyes of critics, proved himself...

Burt Reynolds achieved feature-film stardom and a large measure of credibility with his powerful dramatic performance in the 1972 thriller film Deliverance. Reynolds’ charm and sex appeal were effectively showcased throughout the rest of the decade in films like Hooper, The Longest Yard, Smokey and the Bandit, and Starting Over, which pleased audiences and critics alike while establishing Reynolds as an immensely likable star who was equally adept at action and comedy.
However, in the early 1980s, the good-old-boy image that led Reynolds to be voted Hollywood’s top box-office draw for a record five consecutive years between 1978 and 1982 reached a point of diminishing returns. His unsuccessful pairing with Clint Eastwood in the 1984 action film City Heat marked a precipice in his career from which he never regained his former star power. In the late 1980s, Reynolds made an ignominious return to television, where his career began in the early 1960s.

Matthew McConaughey may be best known for his Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers’ Club, his excellent work on Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, or his immensely likable appearances in a slew of 2000s romcoms such as How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. However, one of his earliest roles shows his depth and range unlike any other: just five months after his work opposite Jodie Foster in Robert Zemeckis’ sci-fi drama Contact, he appeared in Steven Spielberg’s 1997 historical drama Amistad. Here’s why it’s an unmissable performance.

Gladiator was a truly epic undertaking. It tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is sold into slavery and forced to become a gladiator after his family is murdered. He hopes to kill the man responsible, Commodus, but first, he must face near-impossible challenges in the gladiatorial arena.
Filming the movie wasn't remotely easy. Any film that requires fights, battles, swords and living tigers would be the same. Yet the cast and crew persevered against impossible odds, and they ended up with a spectacular triumph. Gladiator was a massive hit: it was the second-highest-grossing film of 2000 and eventually even spawned a sequel. Hopefully, making the sequel was an easier ride.

The Skarsgard family is about one of the most talented working clans today. Headed by patriarch Stellan, the sons include Bill, Alexandar, Gustaf, and Valter. And while not every one of them is a household name, some have been able to break away from their old man to make a distinct mark in the business. As it has been for the past few years, Bill is the sort of presence that might make you say, “Oh, right, I forgot who his dad was!”
Even though Bill Skarsgard might be the reigning “scream king” by playing Pennywise in It and Count Orlok in Nosferatu (among others), he has carried with him plenty of advice from father Stellan, who had already made a name for himself in the family’s native Sweden and in the States. From Isla Sorna to Boston, Massachusettes, Pete Postlethwaite appeared all over the map in his long and celebrated movie career. Born in Lancashire, England to a working-class family, Postlethwaite started his career on the stage, but quickly made his way into movies beginning in the middle of the 1970s. At first working under his full name, Peter Postlethwaite, Postlethwaite eventually shortened his credited name to "Pete Postlethwaite" after appearing in Ridley Scott's debut, The Duellists and Waterland.
With a face that looks like it was carved out of stone, flinty eyes that seem to glow in the dark, and a rough but crystal clear voice, Postlethwaite provides a screen presence few others have ever been able to match or mimic. He can play a frightening villain as well as he can a loving father. He's appeared in tiny independent films, large franchise fare, and plenty of odd, but fantastic movies in between.

In 1994, David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg -- three of Hollywood's biggest power players -- united to form a brand-new major motion picture studio called DreamWorks, something that hadn't been attempted in decades. The trio of execs had three stipulations: they wouldn't make any more than nine films a year, they would be allowed to make movies for other studios, and they would be able to go home in time for dinner.
For three years, the trio would wrangle contracts and make deals with various music, film, and television entities to make sure it was standing on solid ground and could handle being the outsize business entity they wanted it to be. In 1997, DreamWorks finally released its first three movies: "The Peacemaker," "Amistad," and "Mouse Hunt." The year after, the studio broke into feature animation with the bad-but-popular CGI insect film "Antz" and the highly acclaimed and very good "The Prince of Egypt,...

In the early '90s, Matthew McConaugheys big break came by way of the stoner comedy Dazed and Confused, and from there, hed go on to be featured in a number of dramatic roles. A Time to Kill, Contact, and Amistad all helped raise his profile, yet somewhere around the year 2000, Hollywood began to see him in a different light. Suddenly, he began to star in a plethora of romantic comedies, and that was okay with McConaughey, until it wasnt.

Before Matthew McConaughey became alright, alright and stole scenes in Dazed and Confused, his days started a little less glamorous. Picture this: a young McConaughey, headlamp on, raking sand traps at the crack of dawn. His first real job? Not acting — but taming the golf greens of Oak Forest Country Club in Longview, Texas.
“We had 77 sand traps,” The actor recalled in an interview. His morning routine started at 3:30 a.m., with the first golfers teeing off at 6:45. “I had to have those traps raked by 7:30,” he explained. It wasn’t just a typical raking gig, though. Oh no, there was a quirky twist. Enter the armadillos.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has a 42% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The rom-com's audience score is 77%, making it Matthew McConaughey's best in the genre. The film showcases McConaughey's chemistry with Kate Hudson and is more entertaining than other rom-coms.

Whether you feel Ridley Scott's Best Picture winner "Gladiator" is a red-blooded, fist-pumping swords and sandals brouhaha or a "muddy, fuzzy, and indistinct" affair, we can surely all agree it's got a killer cast. Russell Crowe as the stoic hero Maximus, playing the role that snagged him an Oscar a year after he should've won for "The Insider," is the calm at the center of the storm. He has to be a little boring, otherwise he wouldn't work as the foil to Joaquin Phoenix's larger-than-life turn as Commodus.

Anthony Hopkins, one of Hollywood's most prolific actors, has reacted to presidential candidate Donald Trump's comments about the fictional character Hannibal Lecter. Hopkins' performance as Lecter, the pivotal antagonist of The Silence of the Lambs (as well as the other films based on the books by Thomas Harris), shot him into stardom in 1992 when he won an Academy Award for Best Actor.
